Award winning wildlife artist, Sam Timm,

paints with passion

By Sherry Kelley
Local artist, Reverend Sam Timm, doesnt
really know how many original paintings he has
done since he began painting in 1975. Maybe
3,000? Maybe more? After painting for 39
years, its easy to lose track.
Its also easy for Timm to lose track of the
many honors and awards he has won for his
wildlife paintings. The list is long, with awards
beginning in the early 1980s and continuing
throughout his painting career.
Some of the highlights in throughout
Timms career include: being selected in 198586 as Wisconsin Wildlife Artist of the Year
when his painting Old Farm MascotsBlackCapped Chickadees was unanimously selected
from a eld of 89 entries; winning the National
Wildlife Federation Conservation Stamp Print
of the Year in 1990; and Wings Over Wisconsin
Wildlife Print of the Year in 2005, 2002, and
1998.
Timm has minted several plate series for
the Bradford Exchange and has had his works
featured on many national Christmas cards for
organizations like Ducks Unlimited, the National Audubon Society, the U.S. Museum of
Natural History, and many others. In addition,
his original paintings have been juried into the
prestigious Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau and he has had over 200 limited
or open edition prints.
When hunters and shermen get their annual game licenses, the Wisconsin Department
of Natural Resources issues a stamp with the
license. Wisconsin and most other states hold
contests for artists each year for their stamp
designs; Wisconsin holds ve contests and se-

lects a winner in each of the categories, which
include: the Inland Trout stamp, the Wisconsin
Great Lakes Salmon and Trout stamp, a Waterfowl stamp, a Turkey stamp, and a Pheasant
stamp.
In 1985 Timm was the rst wildlife artist
to take rst place in both the Wisconsin Inland
Trout Stamp Contest and the Wisconsin Great
Lakes Salmon and Trout Stamp Contest, and
is one of only three artists who have won all
ve Wisconsin wildlife stamps. Timm has won
many awards in wildlife stamp contests in
Wisconsin and other states and just recently
took rst-runner-up for a painting he submitted
in the Ohio Waterfowl Stamp contest.
I dont enter as many stamp contests as I
used to, said Timm. Whats nice about winning those is that it gets your artwork out there
and exposed to the public; it can catapult your
name and artwork statewide immediately.
Once Timm won his rst stamp contest,
several publishers pursued him. In 1990, he
contracted with Wild Wings in Lake City, MN,
to be the licensed publisher for his artwork.
Since then, Timms artwork has appeared on
Christmas cards, calendars, puzzles, wall paper, wall murals, paint-by-number kits, throws,
pillows, coffee mugs, and many other items.
Wild Wings has sold Sams painted images

said Timms wife Jan.
Timm began painting during his
senior year at North Central Bible
College in Minneapolis in 1975.
While standing in the administration building, Timm spotted an
impressive painting of a mountain scene hanging on the wall
and thought, Ive got to try doing that. Following that, he went
shopping for art supplies and began teaching himself how to paint
in his dormitory room. I never
planned on making a dollar on my
artwork, said Timm. I just did it
because I liked it.
Following college graduation,
Timm married his college sweetheart, Jan, and they moved to St.
Louis, where he served as a youth
pastor at Trinity Tabernacle. Four
years later he accepted a call to
become assistant pastor at Central Assembly of God Church in
Green Bay.

Timm uses Masonite because it is rm, inexpensive, and he can purchase it locally. Timm
practiced his painting hobby for many years,
while studying the artwork of other wildlife artists, especially artist Owen Gromme, who was
the most inspirational for him. He liked Grommes ability to paint everyday Wisconsin occurrences and make them beautiful and interesting.
It is common for Timm to put 100 to 200
hours into a painting and about 250 hours if hes
doing a large piece. Jan is my best critic. Shes
got a good eye and sometimes shell tell me the

New collectors series
of Packers Player Cups
debuts on Family Night
in Green Bay
Packers fans love collectibles
and theres a new series of Player
Cups coming out that is sure
to have Packers fans buzzing.
This is the first time theres
been a series of high-quality,
high-definition, 3D animated
cups featuring different Packers
players said Players Cups
spokesperson Barry Johnson.
On Aug. 2, the Player Cups
promotion kicks off at Packers
Family Night, where everyone
entering Lambeau Field will
receive a free, 3D animated
poster featuring the images of
players who will be on the cups.
Were excited to feature the
Player Cups poster at Packers
Family Night this year, said
Kandi Goltz, Packers manager
of game and fan development.
Fans will enjoy the memento to
take home and display with their
other Packers collectibles.
Coinciding with Packers
Family Night, a Packers 3D
Season Kick-off Cup, which
includes the 2014 season
schedule, will go on sale
statewide exclusively at Kwik
Trip on Aug. 2.
The first Packers Player Cup,
featuring Jordy Nelson, will go
on sale at Wisconsin Kwik Trip
locations on Sept. 4, to mark the

NFL season opener featuring

the Packers and the Seahawks
in Seattle. Following the release
of the first Player Cup, a new
cup will be issued every other
week. The cost for the Player
Cups includes a 32 oz. selfpour beverage. To see the full
list of players to be featured on
the Player Cups, go to: www.
PlayerCups.com.
In addition, fans are being
encouraged to spread the word
about the collectors series via
social media by sharing photos
of themselves with the poster or
Player Cups using the hashtag:
#Player Cups We are just as
excited as the fans are for the
season to begin, and we think
everyone is going to have fun
with the poster and the cups,
said Johnson.
Johnsons company, Dynamic Drinkware, created the
Player Cups promotion in
partnership with the Green Bay
Packers. Dynamic Drinkware,
based in Oshkosh, produces the
patented 3D molded cups for
professional and amateur sports
teams, along with other major
brands throughout the United
States and abroad. All Player
Cups are proudly made in the

as well as domestic goldfish.Bunchkowski works in a variety of media but her passion lies within the fluid and free flowing
watercolor media. She is a member of the Rural Rembrandt Art Club and is their current treasurer. She joined the club shortly
after starting her painting career in 2002.Other works created by Bunchkowski and other club members are on display in the
