Hey HOBY!
Once again this year we had such an incredible conference! The lessons learned by your participation
are, we hope, being demonstrated in your home towns and communities. The skills you gained during
the three day seminar will be some of the most important you will ever posses, and we at HOBY take
pride in all the things the new members of our family will accomplish by applying what you learned. It is
incredibly important to keep growing and building upon the lessons you learned at the conference. The
easiest way to do that is to simply put them into action. Hearing what you need to do to become a
successful leader is a wonderful thing, but unless you use the skills, they are, in the end, futile. During
the reflection period of the seminar, Alex Gjertson said, The world isnt HOBY, and unfortunately, she
is right. We cannot perpetually participate in the conference and the staff cant follow you around doing
cheers everywhere you go. This makes the aforementioned lessons very difficult to keep building upon.
It so tempting to allow them to die when the world is not conducive to building them. Fortunately, HOBY
is proud to announce that we can help with that, too. We have adopted a program known as the Action
Legislature, which is a mock legislative session open to all high school students. It will take place on
August 9
th
from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. in the House chamber. By participating, you will actually be able to sit in a
real representatives chair and debate bills that will be submitted by you, the students. You will get to
experience what a real legislator does each day at the office. Not only will this teach valuable lessons
about the legislative process, it will also put into action all that you learned about communication and
leadership. While the event is technically a mock legislature, it has happened in past Action
Legislatures that bills passed actually go before the real House and Senate. In fact, some of the laws that
affect you on a daily basis were born in the halls of the Action Legislature. Whether you like politics or
not, the Action Legislature will allow you to build your leadership skills while reconnecting with the
HOBY family that you grew to love. And since this event is open to all high school students, you can even
invite your friends to become a part of the HOBY family by participating in the event! The cost is $25 per
student to cover the cost of lunch as well as handout materials on the legislative process. If you are
interested in participating, please contact either Cindy Bishop or Derek Brondum by email (both are
listed below). If you have a mock bill that you would like to see debated during the event, please email it
to Derek at the email listed below. While this is optional, it is recommended, as it will enrich the
experience of the day. We hope that you will consider coming to the Capitol on August 9
th
to reconnect
with the family that you know and love. We will be there, and we hope you will be, too.
See you then!
