I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor
things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor
anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of
God in Christ Jesus our Lord. [Romans 8.38-39]

Are you as confident, as convinced, as Paul that nothing can separate you from the
love of God? I wonder if I am able to understand the impact of Pauls bold state-
ment! For Paul, this list is exhaustive Nothing! can make the separation between
us and Gods love for us in Christ Jesus our Lord.
I wonder if I understand the fullness of Pauls statement because I want to make divisions and sep-
arations all the time. When I judge someones intentions, when I point out someones error, when I
fail to ask how someone is doing and jump to conclusions about her or his reactions to me, I take
possession of power and leave God out of the equation.
I want to make sure I am right and that I am in possession of Gods love. The ugly side of Pauls
question is this: I have it and you dont! Yes, when I make the judgment that I am right, I have
made sure that someone else is wrong. It is a question of a power struggle between you and me
with no room left for God.
That power struggle goes way past just you and me, Paul seems to say. This power struggle is
fought on the spiritual level between the powers of sin and death, and Gods life-giving power of
love. When I find myself submitting to the forces of power and recognition, am I really
submitting to the power of evil? Thats the question Paul is toying with, and Paul answers that
because of J esus, God has delivered us from the powers of sin and death.
Heres another question: What if I believe what Paul is saying? Would my trust in Pauls
words change the way I live? Could Pauls confident statement change anything about me? Thats a
scary thought I might change in the process of trusting in God!
I believe that is Pauls intent that I change into the likeness of Christ, more and more. Paul wants
all of humanity not just me to come to the realization that God has already accomplished the
impossible task of salvation for the whole cosmos. The conscious effort of recognizing Gods act on
my behalf places me on firm ground to trust God with anything even with protecting me from all
danger, always and ever.
As Paul claims, nothing shall separate me from God! Nothing means nothing!
Peace,
Pr. Tim

Gods Work. Our Hands.
Sunday
September 7
GET READY TO SERVE!

Once again, we will be participating in Gods Work. Our
Hands Sunday on September 7. We will have an outdoor
service on September 7, followed by a picnic. The church will
provide burgers and hot dogs. Salads, side dishes, desserts
and homemade ice cream will also be served (think brownie
sundaes!) Then we will start our day of service projects.
If you know of any community volunteer opportunities or any-
one who needs help around their home, please call the church office or speak with
Pastor Tim as soon as possible.
We will be ordering t-shirts again for this special event. There is an order form in
the Narthex on the bulletin board. The t-shirts are yellow
and cost $8.00 each. Sizes include Youth Small, Medi-
um and Large; Adult Small, Medium, Large, and X-
Large. Larger sizes have an additional charge: 2XL is
$2.00 more; 3XL is $3.00 more; and 4XL is $4.00 more.
These t-shirts must be ordered no later than August 1 in
order to have them in time. Please pay for your shirt
when ordering.
FALL BIBLE STUDY
Pastor Tim will be teaching a 12 week class enti-
tled "Jesus, the Forgiving Victim" will meet on
Tuesdays at 7:00 pm on September 2, 9, 23, 30;
October 7, 14, 21, 28; November 4, 11; Decem-
ber 2, 9. Books are available and helpful for this
class. It is a set of 4 books entitled Jesus the
Forgiving Victim by James Alison. The books
can be ordered through Amazon.com. In this
class, James Alisons thought provoking books
help us focus on the importance of Jesus self-
giving example. What does it mean that Jesus
emptied himself? How important is Jesus death
on the cross and what does it mean for you and
me today? These and other questions will be
tackled in the group discussion and the books.

Please register online at the church website at
www.zionslutheranchurch.com.
KINDERGARTEN CAMP
There is another great opportunity
for Zion members to get involved
with our community outside the
walls of the church! The United
Way is helping some of the Defiance County
schools with a kindergarten camp Aug. 4-8. Zi-
on's has graciously opened our kitchen to as-
semble 90 lunches and we need your help! As-
sembly of the lunch will be every day beginning
about 10:30 a.m. with transportation to various
schools immediately. The schools involved are
Defiance, Hicksville, Tinora, and Fairview.
Please consider volunteering to assemble or
transport for all 5 days or as many days as you
are able! Sign up sheet is in the Narthex.

Dear Friends in Christ,

Thank you for your recent (6-13-14) astounding gift of $500.00. We are so grateful
for your support and prayers on our behalf. The summer youth program is in full
swing and is very busy, as usual. We have a great staff this year and the children
are responding well. It is only because of the grace of God and friends like you that we can offer
this much needed program. Gods love is ever present. You are in our prayers.
In Him,
Marge Reas for Redeemer Lutheran Church

Zions,

Thank you for all of your support of all my accomplishments. The church family has been there
to support me in all I have done over the years. I am excited to start college and change the
world. Thank you all very much.
Thank you,
Kristen Gutman

DEACON SUPPORT TEAM

All members should be aware of their deacon and hopefully have met him or her to discuss any con-
cerns or questions you may have had. Your deacons have a sincere interest in serving your needs
and encourage you to bring your needs to the attention of Pastor, the deacon group or council which-
ever is appropriate. In turn, we trust you have an equally sincere interest in getting to know your dea-
con as a present and future friend and confidant. We also want to emphasize the importance of
speaking with Pastor whenever the need arises. He wants to know your concerns to help provide a
solution or answers to your questions. He remains the best resource within our congregation to share
wisdom and knowledge.
Deacons are not exempt from having a deacon of their own. At times we need someone willing to lis-
ten and we turn to our deacon. In our bi-monthly meetings, the nine deacons discuss a variety of top-
ics concerning the spiritual welfare of the congregation. Most importantly we are available for you
when your needs might require someone to talk with other than Pastor Tim.
We are grateful for the opportunity to serve the members of Zions Lutheran Church and we encourage
you to reach out to your deacon whenever the need arises. Please call the church office for any assis-
tance.
