3Com Router 3000 Family
3Com Router 3012, 3013, 3015, 3016, 3018 & 3036
The 3Com Router 3000 family is designed in fixed platform for branch office with attractive price
to performance ratio. The routers support integrated Fast Ethernet (FE) interfaces, AUX ports and
console (Async) port.
In addition, each of the following routers has dedicated WAN interfaces as described below:
3Com Router 3013: 1 Sync/Async serial port & 1 ISDN BRI S/T interface
3Com Router 3015: 1 Sync/Async serial ports & 1 ISDN BRI U interface
The 3Com Router 3000 DSL family is designed in fixed platform for high speed DSL interface
with attractive price to performance ratio. The routers support integrated 4 Fast Ethernet (FE)
interfaces, AUX ports and console (Async) port. In addition, each router has its dedicated WAN
interfaces as being described below:
3Com Router 3031: 1 ADSL over POTS & 1 ISDN BRI S/T
3Com Router 3035: 1 ADSL over ISDN & 1 ISDN BRI S/T

The 3Com Router 5231, 5640 & 5680 has 8 MB flash memory. 5231 has 3 MIM slots, 5640 has 4
MIM slots and 5680 has 8 MIM slots. The 3Com Router 5232, 5642 & 5682 has 32 MB flash
memory. They share the same slot configurations as 5231, 5640 & 5680. All the 5000 routers in
this class have integrated AUX & Console ports and 5231/5232 also has 2 built-in 10/100 ports.
These routers offer high performance with high scalability which can be used for Regional Office
and Head Quarters.

3Com is not responsible for any radio or television interference caused by unauthorized
modification of these devices, or the substitution or attachment of connecting cables and
equipment other than specified by 3Com.
The correction of interference caused by such unauthorized modification, substitution or
attachment will be the responsibility of the user.
Complies with Part 15 of the FCC rules. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: (1)
this device may not cause harmful interference, and (2) this device must accept any interference
received, including interference that may cause undesired operation.

Part 68 Compliance
The products listed below comply with Part 68 of the FCC Rules and the requirements adopted
by ACTA. On the bottom of this equipment is a label that contains, among other information, a
product identifier in the format US:AAAEQ##TXXXX. If requested this number must be provided
to the telephone company.
This equipment contains FCC compliant modular jacks. It is designed to be connected to the
telephone network or premises wiring using compatible modular plugs and cabling that comply
with the requirements of Part 68 rules.
If this equipment causes harm to the telephone network, the telephone company will notify you in
advance that temporary discontinuance of service may be required. But if advance notice isn't
practical, the telephone company will notify the customer as soon as possible. Also, you will be
advised of your right to file a complaint with the FCC if you believe it is necessary.
The telephone company may make changes in its facilities, equipment, operations or procedures
that could affect the operation of the equipment. If this happens the telephone company will
provide advance notice in order for you to make necessary modifications to maintain
uninterrupted service.
For repair or warranty information please contact 3Com Corporation. See “OBTAINING
SUPPORT FOR YOUR PRODUCT” in your Installation Manual. If the equipment is causing harm
to the telephone network the telephone company may request that you disconnect the equipment
until the problem is resolved.
Only the manufacturer or its authorized agents can make repairs to this equipment. In the event
that this equipment requires service, contact your equipment vendor or the manufacturer.

This equipment does not contain any parts that can be repaired by the user.
Connection to party line service is subject to state tariffs. Contact the state public utility
commission, public service commission or corporation commission for information.
If your home has specially wired alarm equipment connected to the telephone line, ensure the
installation of this equipment does not disable your alarm equipment. If you have questions about
what will disable alarm equipment, consult your telephone company or a qualified installer.
UL 60950 Compliance:

NOTICE: The Industry Canada (IC) label identifies certified equipment. This certification means
that the equipment meets the telecommunications network protective, operational, and safety
requirements as prescribed in the appropriate Terminal Equipment Technical Requirements
document(s). The department does not guarantee the equipment will work to the user's
satisfaction.
Before installing this equipment, users should ensure that it is permissible to be connected to the
facilities of the local telecommunications company. The equipment must also be installed using
an acceptable method of connection. The user should be aware that compliance with the above
conditions might not prevent degradation of service in some situations.
Users should ensure for their own protection that the electrical ground connections of the power
utility, telephone lines, and internal metallic water pipe system, if present, are connected together.
This precaution may be particularly important in rural areas. Caution: Users should not attempt to
make such connections themselves, but should contact the appropriate electrical inspection
authority or electrician, as appropriate.
The Ringer Equivalence Number (REN) is an indication of the maximum number of devices
allowed to be connected to a telephone interface. The termination on an interface may consist of
any combination of devices subject only to the requirement that the sum of the RENs of all the
devices does not exceed five.
CISPR 22 Compliance
3Com Router 5000 and 6000 Family comply with the requirements of CISPR 22 for Class
A Information Technology Equipment (ITE) and 3Com Router 3000 and 3000 DSL Family
comply with CISPR 22 Class B.
Warning:
For a class A or B product, in a domestic environment this product may cause radio
interference, in which case the user may be required to take adequate measures.

3. Safety Information
Overview
This section introduces part of the safety precautions that should be followed during the
installation and maintenance of the 3Com Router 3000, 3000 DSL, 5000, and 6000 Family.
Note:
Before any operation is performed, please read the operation instructions and precautions
carefully to minimize the possibility of accidents. The Note, Caution, Warning and Danger items
in other manuals do not cover all safety precautions that should be followed. They are only the

these basics of safety operation.
In performing various operations, please follow the local safety regulations. The safety
precautions introduced in the product manuals are supplementary and subject to the local safety
regulations.
When various operations are executed on the products, the precautions and special safety
instructions provided by 3Com must be followed to the full.
The personnel in charge of the installation and maintenance of the 3Com products must be
trained as to r the proper operating methods and all safety precautions. Only the trained and
qualified personnel can perform operations such as equipment installation and maintenance.
Conventions Used
The symbols in this manual are shown in the following table. They are used to remind the
reader of the safety precautions during equipment installation and maintenance.
Safety precautions are classified into the following levels: Danger, Warning, Caution and Note.
Danger: Suggests the possibility of a fatal accident or body injury if safety precautions are
ignored.
Warning: Suggests the possibility of a major accident or severe injury, or equipment damage, if
safety precautions are ignored.
Caution: Suggests the possibility of a severe injury, or that the equipment may be damaged, if
safety precautions are ignored.

General Requirements
In order to reduce the technically unavoidable residual risk to a minimum, it is imperative to follow
the rules below:
Read all the instructions before operation.
The unit/system must be installed/used in the restricted accession location.
When installing the unit, always make the ground connection first and disconnect it last.
Do not block ventilation openings while the system is on, and keep at least 5 cm distance
from ventilation openings and walls or other things which may block the openings.
Never defeat the ground conductor or operate the equipment in the absence of a suitably
installed ground conductor. Contact the appropriate electrical inspection.
The unit/system must be permanently connected to the protective ground before operation.
The cross-section of protective earthing conductor shall be at least 4mm2.
The device applies to TN power systems.
The plug-socket combination must be accessible at all times because it serves as the main
disconnecting device.
To reduce the risk of fire, use only No. 26 AWG or larger telecommunication line cord.
No operation can be done on the device and cables when lightning.
To avoid electric shock, do not connect safety extra-low voltage (SELV) circuits to telephone-
network voltage (TNV) circuits.
When moving or lifting the router, lift the chassis by grasping its lower edges.
For safety of the user and the equipment, it is not recommended to wear jewelry or watches
during the operation of the device.
Installation, configuration and disassembly must be done only by trained personnel in
accordance with the documents concerned.
The unit/system must be operated by experts and authorized users only.
Any replacement or change to the system or parts of the system (including the software)
must be done by qualified personnel.
Any fault and error that might affect safety must be reported immediately by the user to the
person in charge.
Removal or disabling of any safety features, troubleshooting, and maintenance of the
equipment must be done by qualified personnel only.
All parts of the document must be followed. The document also serves as a guide to the selection
of measuring and test equipment.

Electrical Safety
High Voltage
Danger:
High voltage power supply offers electric power for equipment operation. Direct contact or indirect
contact (via damp objects) with high voltage and AC mains supply may result in fatal danger.
z During installation of the AC power supply assembly, local safety regulations must be
followed. The personnel who install the AC facility must be qualified for high voltage and AC
operations.
z Conducting articles, such as a watch, hand chain, bracelet and ring are prohibited during the
operation.
z When operation is performed in a damp environment, make sure that water is kept away from
the equipment.
Warning:
Non-standard and improper high voltage wiring may result in fire and electric shock. Therefore,
AC cable installation and wiring must follow the local rules and regulations. The personnel who
perform high voltage operations should be qualified for high voltage and AC operations.
Electrostatic Discharge
Caution:
The electrostatic (static electricity) generated by human body may damage the electrostatic-
sensitive components on the circuit board, such as large-scale integrated (LSI) circuits.
The human body moving, friction on clothes, friction between shoes and the ground, holding
ordinary plastic with hands, will generate a static electricity field that will remain with the human
body for a long time.
Before touching the equipment, hand-holding, circuit boards, or ASICs, a grounded electrostatic
discharge (ESD) wrist strap should be worn to prevent the sensitive components from being
damage by the electrostatic in human body.

Interface Card Installation and Removal
Note:
When plugging the interface card , the operator should not push it too hard, otherwise the pins on
the backplane may be distorted.
The board should be inserted along the slot guide. Try to avoid contact between he circuit sides
of the board and other boards, which will result in short-circuit or scratch.
When holding a board in hand, do not touch the board circuit, components, connectors, and
connection slots.
Note:
Signal lines should be routed separately from high current lines or high voltage line. The spacing
of the binding should be 150mm at minimum.

Allgemeine Anforderungen
Um das technisch bedingte Restrisiko auf ein Minimum zu begrenzen, ist es unbedingt
erforderlich, die folgenden Regeln zu beachten:
• Lesen Sie alle Anweisungen sorgfältig durch, bevor Sie mit dem Arbeiten beginnen.
• Das System muss in einem Raum installiert werden, der unbefugten Personen keinen Zutritt
gestattet.
• Beachten Sie, dass bei der Installation des Systems stets zuerst die Erdverbindung angebracht
wird und das die Erdverbindung stets als letztes getrennt wird.
• Sorgen Sie dafür, dass die Öffnungen der Ventilation zu keinem Zeitpunkt verschlossen,
verstopft oder anderweitig blockiert sind. Zwischen den Ventilationsöffnungen und Wänden
bzw. anderen Gegenständen muss stets ein Abstand von mindestens 5cm bestehen.
• Betreiben Sie die Ausrüstung niemals ohne Erdung. Trennen Sie das System nicht von der
Erdung.
• Das System muss vor der ständigen Inbetriebnahme geedet werden. Der Querschnitt der
Erdverbindung sollte mindestens 4mm² betragen.
• Mit Wechselstrom betriebenes Modell: Das Gerät arbeitet mit einem Phase-Nullleiter-System.
• Mit Gleichstrom betriebenes Modell: Für das Gerät muss eine verstärkte Isolation bereitgestellt
werden, um die 61-72V-Quelle gegen die Hauptversorgung zu isolieren.
• Mit Wechselstrom betriebenes Modell: Der Netzstecker muss jederzeit leicht zugänglich sein.
• Da das Gerät mehrere Energiequellen hat, ist es notwendig stets alle Verbindungen zu
unterbrechen, um den energiefreien Zustand zu erreichen.
• Um die Brandgefahr zu minimieren dürfen ausschließlich Nr. 26 AWG oder leistungsfähigere
Telekommunikationskabel verwendet werden.
• Wenn die Gefahr eines Blitzeinschlages besteht, darf weder an der Vorrichtung noch an den
Kabeln gearbeitet werden.
• Um einen elektrischen Schlag zu vermeiden, dürfen Kleinspannungsschaltungen (SELV) nicht
mit Telefonnetzwerken (TNV) verbunden werden.
• Zum Anheben und Tragen der Baugruppen erfassen Sie diese bitte an den Handgriffen, die
direkt an der Baugruppe angebracht sind oder umfassen Sie die untere Kante der Baugruppe.
Benutzen Sie nicht die Handgriffe an den einzelnen Bausteinen, wie z. B. Stromzufuhr,
Ventilator oder Karten, da diese das Gesamtgewicht des Gerätes nicht tragen können.
• Nehmen Sie das Gerät nicht in Betrieb, solange das optische Fenster nicht geschlossen ist.
Der Laserstrahl kann zu Augenverletzungen führen.
• Aus Sicherheitsgründen dürfen bei Arbeiten mit der Ausrüstung keine Uhren, Armbänder,
Ringe oder anderer Schmuck getragen werden.
• Installation, Einrichtung und Demontage der Ausrüstung dürfen nur durch geschultes und
qualifiziertes Fachpersonal durchgeführt werden.
• Das System darf nur von qualifizierten und bevollmächtigten Fachkräften betrieben werden.
• Jeder Austausch und jede Änderung am System und seinen Teilen (einschließlich der
Software) darf nur vom qualifizierten und bevollmächtigten Fachpersonal von 3Com
durchgeführt werden.
• Jeder aufgetretene Fehler und jede Funktionsstörung, welche die Sicherheit gefährden können,
müssen unverzüglich vom Betreiber dem verantwortlichen Personal berichtet werden.
• Entfernen oder Abschalten von Sicherheitseinrichtungen sowie die Instandhaltung der
Ausrüstung dürfen nur von qualifizierten Fachkräften durchgeführt werden.
Alle Teile dieses Handbuches sind zu beachten.Das Handbuch dient gleichzeitig als Ratgeber bei
der Auswahl von zusätzlichen Messinstrumenten und Testvorrichtungen.

Elektrische Sicherheit
Hochspannung
Gefahr:
Hochspannungsleitungen stellen die für die Arbeit der Ausrüstung erforderliche Energie zur
Verfügung. Direkter oder indirekter Kontakt (z. B. durch feuchte Gegenstände) mit Hochspannung
und Wechselstromversorgung kann zu tödlichen Unfällen führen.
Warnung:
Die Nichtbeachtung der Sicherheitsvorschriften bei der Arbeit mit Hochspannung kann zu Feuer
und elektrischem Schlag führen. Deshalb muss die Verlegung von Leitungen und Verbindungen
den örtlichen Anforderungen und Sicherheitsvorschriften entsprechen. Arbeiten mit
Hochspannung dürfen nur von qualifiziertem Fachpersonal durchgeführt werden.
Zuleitung
Anmerkung:
Das Entfernen und Anbringen von Zuleitungen ist strengstens verboten. Kurzschlüsse zwischen
innerem und äußerem Leiter können Lichtbögen oder Funkenflug verursachen, was zu Feuer
oder einer Augenverletzung führen kann.
• Das System muss stets abgeschaltet werden, bevor die Zuleitung angebracht oder entfernt
wird.
• Überprüfen Sie vor dem Anbringen der Zuleitung immer, ob das von Ihnen verwendete Kabel
den Anforderungen entspricht.
Anmerkung:
Für mit Gleichstrom betriebene Ausrüstung benutzen Sie bitte eine SJT 16AWG Zuleitung.
Für mit Wechselstrom betriebene Ausrüstung benutzen Sie bitte eine UL1015 16 AWG Zuleitung.

Werkzeuge
Warnung:
Für Arbeiten mit Hochspannung und Wechselstrom sind Spezialwerkzeuge zu verwenden. Es ist
nicht erlaubt, herkömmliche Werkzeuge oder Werkzeuge des Bedienpersonals zu benutzen.
Bohren
Warnung:
Das Anbohren des Baugruppenträgers ist verboten. Am Baugruppenträger darf nur mit Erlaubnis
gebohrt werden. Um die Beschädigung der im Inneren des Baugruppenträgers verlaufenden
Kabel und Leitungen zu vermeiden, sind beim Bohren die Sicherheitsanforderungen zu beachten.
Beim Bohren können Metallspäne in den Baugruppenträger gelangen und Kurzschlüsse in den
Leiterplatten auslösen.
Gewitter
Gefahr:
Arbeiten mit Hochspannung und Wechselstrom oder Arbeiten auf Stahltürmen und masten
während eines Gewitters sind verboten.
Das elektromagnetische Feld, das während eines Gewitters entsteht, kann die Elektronik
beschädigen. Um die Ausrüstung vor Beschädigung durch Blitzschlag zu schützen, ist eine
ordnungsgemäße Erdung erforderlich.
Elektrostatische Entladung
Achtung:
Die durch den menschlichen Körper erzeugte elektrostatische Energie (statische Elektrizität)
kann die gegen elektrostatische Entladung besonders empfindlichen Teile der Leiterplatten, wie z.
B. die Schaltkreise (LIC), beschädigen.
• Hält man einen herkömmlichen Kunststoffgegenstand in der Hand, wird bei jeder Bewegung
des menschlichen Körpers durch die Reibung der Kleidung aneinander oder durch die
Reibung der Schuhe mit dem Boden ein elektromagnetisches Feld erzeugt, welches für lange
Zeit im Körper bestehen bleibt.
• Deshalb ist es erforderlich, vor jeder Berührung der Ausrüstung, der Leiterplatten oder
Schaltungen ein geerdetes Armband zur elektrostatischen Entladung zu tragen. So können
die sensiblen Teile vor einer Beschädigung infolge der im Körper vorhandenen Elektrostatik
geschützt werden.

Einsteckplatinen
Anmerkung:
Beim Einstecken einer Platine darf kein zu großer Druck ausgeübt werden, ansonsten kann es
zur Verdrehung der Kontakte kommen.
• Die Platine muss exakt längs zum Einschub eingeführt werden. Verhindern Sie, dass sich die
Schaltkreise der Platinen berühren. Das kann zu Kurzschluss oder Kratzern auf der Platine
führen.
