Kindergarten Term Three Overview 2013

Welcome to Term 3! This overview is designed to give you an outline of what our classes
will be engaged in during this term.

Primary Years Program( PYP ) - Unit of Inquiry
Waste (Wks 1-7)
Central Idea: The things we use can be reused.
Lines of Inquiry:
What waste is
Identifying waste in our environment
Waste as a resource
The recycling process
Things you can discuss at home:
Waste procedures at home e.g. sorting recycling, reusing, composting, ways to
promote waste free lunches
We will be having a weekly Waste Free Wednesday Challenge during this unit
(more information to follow)
MRF (Materials Recovery Facility) & Landfill Excursion
On Wednesday 30
th
July all of the Kindergarten classes will visit the MRF and Landfill by
bus to learn about the process of where our waste goes.

Kitchen Science (Term 3 wks 8-10 Term 4 wks 1-3)
Central Idea: Changing materials changes their properties.
Lines of Inquiry:
The observable properties of common kitchen materials (e.g. water, butter,
chocolate, jelly, eggs, popcorn)
How changing familiar materials changes their properties (e.g. heating, cooling,
wetting, mixing)
The scientific process (making and testing predictions, observation, recording and
interpreting data)
Things you can discuss at home:
Involve your child with cooking at home e.g. measuring ingredients, reading and
writing recipes, observing the changes during the cooking process

Literacy:
This term we will cover:
Consolidating letter knowledge, writing and knowing the letter sounds and
common diagraphs (sh, ch, th etc.)
Reading and beginning to spell Magic 100 high frequency words
Sentence structure, punctuation and grammar (capital letters, finger spaces and
full stops)
Recount writing
Speaking in front of the class e.g. Being a reporter or sharing as a Star in the
Limelight during Investigations
Shared and modeled reading
Guided reading and literacy rotations (small flexible groupings)
Home Reading Program - we welcome parents to help in our reading program by
listening to students read between 9:00am till 9:45am each morning.
Numeracy:
The topics we will explore this term are:
Consolidate number knowledge and introducing numbers 11 - 20 and associated
place value
Subtraction
3D shapes
Measurement Length, Volume and Mass
What the Dapper Daisies week looks like
Friendly Reminders:
The children need to have these labeled items:
a sun smart hat (not in winter)
a jumper and jacket
sensible shoes for gross motor activities
water bottle
