Preface

The state is endowed with 44 rivers, innumerable irrigation tanks,
reservoirs ,streams & waterfalls ,private and public ponds and water
logged paddy fields .Besides these ,9 fresh water lakes are available ,
from which the drinking water supply of the state are met with. The
Highland area of the State has the specialty of cold water resource. The
rivers have an area of about 0.85 lakh ha of which 41 are westerly
flowing and 3 are easterly flowing. The total area of the 53 reservoirs
comes to around 0.43 lakh ha.
Geographically, inland fisheries have great scope in the state. An
inimitable feature of the State is the occurrence of 49 interconnected
backwaters (Kayals) which have an area of 46129 ha. Besides there are
estuaries, backwaters, brackish water area, pokkali & prawn filtration
fields and private shrimp farms. All these bodies of water provide rich
sources of inland fish production.
Inland fish production provides significant contribution to
animal protein supplies in rural areas of the state. Most of the inland
production is consumed locally and marketed domestically. The
approach to XI

Plan of the State in the Inland sector is development of
inland fisheries & aquaculture through an integrated approach. It also
aims at conservation and management of fisheries resources. Production
of quality fish seeds along with measures for seed certification, disease
diagnosis and other measures for health management are also targeted
during XI
th
plan period. For increasing the inland production through the
maximum utilization of the resources, introduced the project
Matsyakeralam during the XI
th
five year plan.
The statistical details presented in the ensuing tables will give a
birds eye view of the Inland sector of Kerala. We hope this publication
will be useful to the Planners, Researchers and other data users.
Suggestions to improve the quality as well as the contents of this
publication are most welcome.

Introduction
Kerala is abundant in water resources which include rivers, lakes, back waters, big and
small ponds etc. Lions share of the states water needs is supplied by the rivers along with their
tributaries and an innumerable number of streams and rivulets crisscross the land making it green
,attractive and fertile. Water from these rivers is used for irrigational purposes ,drinking, hydro
electric power production etc. They also serves as grounds for inland fishing.

Schemes implemented through the department of fisheries in the inland sector
1. Resource conservations and management-
1 Sea ranching- for the release of young ones of prawn for the replenishment of prawn
resources.
2. Social fisheries- for fish resource conservation in rivers and other water bodies.
3. Backwater patrolling- Back water patrolling is conducted in lakes and estuaries for
controlling Chinese nets and stake nets.

2. FFDA assisted scheme for inland fisheries/production enhancement(75% central
assistance)
3. setting up of Nurseries-for the purchase of brood fish and meeting the cost of fish seed
production in Govt hatcheries- Rearing and management of fish seed Development of
facilities for the seed production of sea bass, milk fish and pearl Crab culture on
experimental basis spot.
4. Extension, Training and Infrastructure Facilities- Extension of fresh water/Brackish
water fish culture programs, construction and repair of matsya bhavans, information centres
etc
5. Matsyakeralam for the enhancement of inland fish production
6. Integrated Prawn/fish Culture Development Project in Pokkali lands
7. Integrated scampi/fish culture in kole lands of Thrissur and paddy fields of Kuttanad
