Our Projects
Polaris Climate Change Observatory study, South Africa
We have been appointed by the International Polar Foundation (IPF) to manage the
Project Development and Project Viability Study for the Polaris Climate Change
Observatory (CCO).

The Polaris CCO concept was created by the IPF to support their aim of providing an
innovative interface between science and society, by making climate change
understandable to the general public. It will focus on the importance of polar science in
understanding the causes and consequences of climate change, and will be a forum for
sharing knowledge and initiatives related to mitigation and adaptation.

The Polaris CCO in Cape Town will be the first of its kind in the world, with further
developments in Brussels and Abu Dhabi envisioned by 2022.

For further information please contact Con Strydom or Tessa Brunette (both Cape
Town).

Arup to deliver Smart Motorway, Queensland, Australia
A multidisciplinary team in the Brisbane office has been engaged by Queensland
Transport and Main Roads to provide the detailed design for the Gateway Motorway
North (Nudgee Road to Bruce Highway) Managed Smart Motorway project, including
a variable speed limit system and ramp metering.

The project covers a 15km length of the motorway with six intersections through
environmentally sensitive wetlands areas. The project team will provide environmental
impact assessments and geotechnical surveys as well as highways infrastructure,
structures, electrical and communication design to supplement the Intelligent Transport
Systems (ITS) design.

Funding for the project includes that announced during the Australian federal budget as
part of the development of a national policy for smart motorways to reduce congestion,
lower urban emissions and to improve the efficiency and capacity of existing outer-
urban road networks for Sustainable Australia. It is the highest priority project within
the South East Queensland Managed Motorway Deployment Plan.

For further information please contact Kerry Farley (Brisbane).

A465 Dualling Section 3 Carbon Assessment, UK

Our Cardiff office is currently undertaking this Early Contractor Involvement (ECI)
Design and Build project for Carillion and the Welsh Government.

As part of strategies to document added value for the scheme, Lynsay Hughes
(Liverpool) has completed a whole life carbon assessment for the new section of
highway, considering the carbon from the construction, use, maintenance and operating
phases of the life cycle.

The existing highway suffers from stop-start traffic movements. It was anticipated that
the new highway would enable free-flow traffic, reducing fuel consumption and hence
carbon emissions. Paul Carr and Joanna Karasiewicz (Cardiff) assisted with VISSIM
instantaneous emission modelling to demonstrate that emissions decrease upon
construction of the new road. The reduction in carbon in the use phase means that some
of the carbon expended in the construction could be offset.

Impacts of value engineering were also assessed. For example, major changes to the
earthworks strategy to replace a viaduct are shown to save over 50% of the related
carbon emissions.

Understanding the whole life carbon impacts of infrastructure will soon be common
practice - to enable the magnitude of emissions to be known and to place any perceived
benefits into context. This project required a number of approaches and methodologies,
including the use of the Arup CO
2
STtool. For more information regarding the A465
scheme, please contact Lynsay Hughes (Liverpool), or Ben Sibert (Cardiff).

Western Balkans Investment Framework bid information
We are bidding for a major EUfunded 15m EUR Technical Assistance project called
Western Balkans Investment Framework IPF TA click here to view the service
contract notice.

We have been tracking this project over the last year and have built a consortium with
Greek consultancy PLANET. The preparation of the submission is led by David Kelly
and Johnny Ojeil (Midlands Campus) with involvement of our Belgrade office.

Should you be approached by other companies, please inform David or J ohnny for their
consideration.

Paperless condition surveys a reality, UK
Our Facilities Management (FM) team in Bristol have successfully developed and
completed the first ever large scale, paperless condition survey using handheld Personal
Digital Assistants (PDAs). This marks a technological milestone in this field as the
devices proved extremely reliable, delivering greater accuracy and efficiency to the
client.

A small team of engineers, lead by Gary Lloyd (Bristol), used the PDAs to conduct the
condition survey on Royal Derby Hospital. This involved a non-intrusive review across
the whole site, which consisted of an internal fabric condition survey of over 7000
rooms, all major mechanical and electrical plant and equipment, external building fabric
and site wide infrastructure.

The touch screen devices allowed accurate and consistent reporting of each assets
condition as well as monitoring each surveyors performance. Pre-loaded asset lists and
room schedules reduced the operational complexity of the survey, allowing the FM
specialists to focus on evaluating each asset; this also provided the facility to verify and
update the current asset register and room schedules as the survey progressed.

Once the surveying was complete, the inbuilt electronic reporting mechanism allowed
customised, draft reports to be issued instantly, a process which used to take weeks of a
data inputers time.

Initially developed in conjunction with AT&R, there are many potential uses of these
devices, with GPS tagging and bar-coding of assets currently being explored.

For further information, please contact Ian Lockwood (Bristol) or Gary.

Our People
Gabriele Del Mese a Fellow of Institution of Italian Engineers
On 25 J uly, Gabriele Del Mese, who established our Milan office, Arups first in Italy,
was nominated a Fellow of the Institution of Italian Engineers. During the ceremony
held in Salerno, Gabriele delivered a lecture entitled The Architecture of Engineering.

Events
Buildings Practice team host client event at Serpentine, UK
The Buildings Practice team, led by Tristram Carfrae (London), hosted a successful
networking evening at the Serpentine Gallery Summer Pavilion on 26 J uly. It
was attended by 150 architects and senior partners.

Thanks to Arups engineering of the Pavilion (designed by Swiss architect Peter
Zumthor) and ongoing support for the project, we have exclusive use of the Pavilion for
some corporate events. The Serpentine Gallery Pavilion remains a great success for
Building Engineering and reinforces our commitment to the design and delivery of
exceptional buildings. This years event marks ten years of Arup collaboration in design
and consulting for the prestigious architectural commission. On September 1, Building
Engineering London (BEL) will also host a client networking event with our senior
leaders.

Project leader, Ed Clark (London), said feedback has so far been very good: In many
ways this years Pavilion is more about the hortus conclusus (the enclosed garden) than
it is about the enclosure itself. In engineering terms, the concepts are simple, but the
challenges lay in the subtlety of the detail, choice of materials and the process of
construction. Peters design method involves a lot of physical prototyping; not just
models but full size details and sections through the building. We were able to engage
in this process, using these physical samples to test not just how the building would
look and feel, but also how it would perform. Please contact Ed for further
information.

Remanufacturing conference, University of Strathclyde
Keith Evans (Edinburgh) attended the first International Conference on
Remanufacturing, University of Strathclyde on 27 - 29 J uly. Keith was invited to give a
keynote presentation entitled Thinking Practically about Sustainability.

The British Standards Institution defines remanufacturing as "returning a used product
to at least its original performance with a warranty that is equivalent to or better than
that of the newly manufactured product". It is seen potentially as a major area for
sustainable development through reduction of waste.

The conference was an assembly of over 100 delegates from 23 countries; academics
and industry representatives presented five keynotes, five presentations and 51
academic research papers over a three day period. The event was publicised by both the
BBC and Strathclyde University. For more information, including the academic
abstracts, please contact Keith.

Corporate News
OvaWord system review invitation to contribute
The Information Technology and Systems Executive (ITSX) have sponsored a project
to assess OvaWord and to understand how we might do things better. This will build on
your comments from the recent Global IT survey.

We need to understand clearly what people need from such a system before we embark
on any changes if required to the way we handle reports, forms and templates across
the firm.

The core objective is to make things more user-friendly and accessible whilst
delivering our brand cohesively and recognising the business variances and regional
differences required.

The analysis team will contact key stakeholders to discuss how well (or not) OvaWord
delivers what is needed. If you do wish to contribute further or to make any comments
and suggestions, then please do so by mailing ovawordfeedback@arup.com. This
OvaWord stock-take has to be completed within the next six weeks, so we need your
comments by the end of August at the latest.

Australian central print room certified green printers
The Australian central print room, based in Sydney, has been awarded with a
Sustainable Green Printing (SGP) certification by the Printing Industry Association
of Australia.
SGP is the Australian printing industry's own recognisable certification
program designed to help in-house printers and printing companies meet their
environmental responsibilities and go above and beyond compliance. This certification
will meet our business printing requirements, the demands of our customers and the
changing trends in printing environmentally responsibility.

Continuous improvement in environmental performance has been a standard goal for
the Print Room in recent years. Introducing a Guideline for Environmentally Friendly
Printing was just one of many practical ways considered to be of significant importance
to all staff in the Region.

For more information regarding green printing recommendations please contact Goran
Gajic (Sydney).

locations, with a total request for funding of 3.6m. This also included some client
collaborations. A third of entries were external applications from a wide range of
universities and levels, from students to Deans. The Infrastructure call proved the most
popular, accounting for over half the proposals.

The selection committee met this week to evaluate the proposals based on potential
impact for our business, relevance to the topic call, novelty, and value of the potential
collaboration. Successful applicants will be notified week commencing 8 August and
invited to submit full proposals through Investment in Arup (IiA) by the end of August.

Contact Marta Fernandez (London) for more information.
