POLICY STATEMENT
LAST UPDATED: 05/15/09 CONFIDENTIAL 1
Platform Support for PegaRULES Process
Commander

for Pegasystems Partners,

Customers, and Prospects

Policy Statement
PegaRULES Process Commander

is designed as an open system which complies with industry

standards. It is implemented in Java, using standard facilities to ensure compatibility and operability
with similarly compliant 3
rd
party components such as Server Operating Systems, Databases,
Applications Servers, Client Operating Systems, Browsers and integration service components.

Our expectation is that PegaRULES can be deployed successfully in tandem with any combination
of environmental and infrastructure components including hybrid heterogeneous combinations of
dissimilar servers. It is also our expectation, gained from experience, that with such deployments
the devil is in the details, and that the first such deployment should only be undertaken by
experienced engineers who have the necessary skills to ensure smooth and complete installation
and reliable and performant operation.

In addition:

1. Customers should contact their Pegasystems representative to discuss their platform selection
and their installation plan before beginning the installation.

2. It is a standard recommendation that every deployment, regardless of platform, should include
a Wintel application server as an operations development dashboard. Our diagnostic and
development capabilities are far more advanced in the Wintel environment and inclusion of this
component greatly enhances the ability of our service and support staff to be effective in
troubleshooting and solution optimisation.

3. PegaRULES Process Commander and applications built on it are designed to run on any
combination within each category of the published platform components in the Platform
Options section, including a mixed deployment of different application server or browser
technology. Consult your Pegasystems representative to determine whether the desired
platform combination has been deployed in production before, and to discuss risk mitigation
strategies.

4. To obtain new features and capabilities, customers may be required to upgrade to newer
versions of PegaRULES products, which may have different or additional prerequisites. Note
also that updated versions of third-party components (including bug fix releases of such
components) may themselves impose different or additional prerequisites.

5. Pegasystems will make commercially reasonable efforts to offer support in its products for a
new version of the third-party components listed in this document, within 12 months of that
version becoming Generally Available (as differentiated from an alpha or beta version of
the product). This support will normally be made available in a new release or service pack.

6. For all of the third-party components, Pegasystems will support the current product version
and the version immediately prior to the current release.

PEGARULES PROCESS COMMANDER V5.5 SUPPORTED PLATFORM LIST
LAST UPDATED: 05/15/09 CONFIDENTIAL 4

Notes on Java Virtual Machines (JVMs): PegaRULES Process Commander requires Java to be
installed on the application server, and supports the JVMs which are supported by the application
servers listed above.

Process Commander supports 64-bit JVMs on the platforms your application server
supports. Please refer to the support matrix of your application server and the third-
party products for details on which combinations support 64-bit JVMs.

For WebSphere and WebLogic, use the JVM provided by the vendor for that version and
patch level of the application server. (For WebLogic 8 and 9, Pegasystems tested with the
standard Sun JVM and not JRockit.)

Process Commander supports the 64-bit Sun Java 6 JVM at update 10 or later. Earlier
versions of the Sun Java 6 JVM will not function correctly due to a Java 6 bug. (64-bit Sun
Java 5 JVM may also be used.)

Tomcat does not bundle a JVM in its application. For the supported versions of Tomcat,
Java 5 is recommended, at the Java vendors latest patch level. (NOTE: Tomcat
versions 5.5 and later run with Java 1.5; in order to work with Java 1.4.2, the Tomcat JDK
1.4 Compatibility Package must be installed.)

The following error may occur when running Process Commander v5.x:
java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: PermGen space
Pegasystems recommends that users who see this error upgrade to the following Sun
JVM versions:

for 1.4.2: 1.4.2_12 or later
for 1.5: 1.5.0_07 or later

Please see the Platform Bulletins section of this document for details.

PEGARULES PROCESS COMMANDER V5.5 PLATFORM BULLETINS
LAST UPDATED: 05/15/09 CONFIDENTIAL 8

PegaRULES Process Commander v5.5 Platform Bulletins
Some known issues involving the third-party software PegaRULES works with are
described below. For the most up-to-date information on all the Platform Bulletins for
products which support Process Commander, please reference the Support
Knowledgebase at:

www.pega.com/support

(NOTE: This Support site requires a customer login.)

Oracle Database Software
For full details on these and other important Oracle issues, please reference the
PegaRULES Platform Bulletin #21864: Oracle Database Issues.

Oracle Thin Client Drivers
Early versions of Oracle thin client drivers do not support Process Commander. This is
due to the thin drivers not supporting the JDBC specification for Binary Large Object
(BLOB or Stream) support.

PegaRULES Process Commander relies on the database driver to provide services
related to passing data to and from the database. Given the data-driven architecture of
Process Commander, the reliability of these services are critical if applications built in
PegaRULES are to function.

In their Metalink documentation, Oracle has stated that Type 4 (thin client) drivers do not
work with Oracle 9i:

Subject: Mapping Large Objects with Oracle TopLink and the Oracle
Database Server
Doc ID: Note:293603.1

For Oracle 10g:

As of July 2006, the thin client driver for the 10g version of Oracle has successfully passed
our standard regression testing in Quality Engineering and the Performance Lab.

From these tests, thin client drivers for 10g now appear to work successfully with
PegaRULES Process Commander.

Decimal numbers are stored incorrectly by some Oracle drivers in Java 5
Customers using any version of an Oracle database may upgrade their systems from
Java 1.4.2 to Java 5 (either the Sun JVM or the IBM JVM the problem occurs with both).
After the upgrade, they see incorrect decimal values in exposed numeric columns in the
database.
PEGARULES PROCESS COMMANDER V5.5 PLATFORM BULLETINS
LAST UPDATED: 05/15/09 CONFIDENTIAL 9

BEA has noted that some Oracle drivers, when used with JDK 5.0 (either Sun or IBM
versions), failed BEAs internal testing for decimal data types.

http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs91/issues/known_resolved.html#1089631

BEA believes this issue has been fixed in Oracles 10.2.0.2 driver, which was the driver
used in testing the Oracle platform combinations for Process Commander.

Based on this information, Pegasystems recommends that customers using Oracle
and JDK 5.0 should use the Oracle 10.2.0.2 (or later) driver.

JVM Issues

OutOfMemory Error: PermGen space
The following error may occur when running Process Commander v5.1:

java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: PermGen space

This is due to a bug in the Sun JVM code. Versions of the 1.5 Sun JVM prior to 1.5.0_07,
or versions of the 1.42 Sun JVM prior to 1.4.2_12, had memory leaks which could
consume perm space.

See Suns writeup:

http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=5093520

Pegasystems recommends that users who see this error upgrade to the following Sun
JVM versions:

for 1.4.2: 1.4.2_12 or later
for 1.5: 1.5.0_07 or later

For full details on this JVM issue, please reference the PegaRULES Platform Bulletin
#21247: Sun J VM Issues.

WebSphere and Solaris
WebSphere requires that you obtain and install the IBM-supplied version of Suns JVM
(included with WebSphere), rather than the default Sun JVM. Verify that an appropriate
version has been obtained and installed with all the appropriate maintenance patches
applied, or the system will not operate correctly. Contact IBM for support.

Internet Explorer 7
For details on issues to be aware of when using Internet Explorer 7 with different versions
of Process Commander, please reference the PegaRULES Platform Bulletin #24049:

Commander; if these settings are not present, the system will not start. For details, please
reference the PegaRULES Platform Bulletin #25690 on the PDN.

requires Java to be installed on the application server, and supports the JVMs which are supported
by the application servers listed above.

A system may run with a 32-bit or a 64-bit operating system, and it may also run with a
32-bit or a 64-bit JVM. Pegasystems has only tested with 32-bit JVMs, and 64-bit
JVM systems are not supported for Version 4.2. (NOTE: A 64-bit operating system
has been successfully exercised in a lab environment using a 32-bit JVM.)

* The option DB2 for zOS v8.1 refers to a Process Commander installation on the IBM pSeries
using AIX, but with the DB2 database itself on a separate mainframe server running zOS.
