insulation and climate responsiveness.

Extensive roof gardens
Extensive roof gardens have a thin growing medium as
low as 120mm deep, planted with prostrate low-growing
vegetation. Fytogreen supplies and installs extensive
green roofs that have superior performance because our
Hydrocell growing medium is a very lightweight water
retentive substrate that enables fast plant establishment.
Although Fytogreen installs sub-irrigation, typically our
extensive roof gardens require minimal maintenance.
Extensive roofs are light enough to be retroftted to
existing buildings with minimal enhancement to the
roofs structural capabilities.

Extensive Roof Showcase - The Victorian Desalination Project
The Victorian Desalination Project, the frst large-
scale extensive green roof in Australia (26,000 sqm),
is Fytogreens showcase extensive green roof project.
Fytogreen worked closely with Aspect Studios to
tackle four key aspects of green roof design namely
weight, water, wind and weeds to develop the design
and maintenance strategy for this landmark project.

The immense scale of the project can be appreciated in these images of early
establishment and planting stages. More than 100,000 plants were transported to
the roof - all indigenous local provenance plant species selected for hot-dry
conditions, low fammability, longevity, adaptability and responsiveness to various
exposures. All plants collected from seed and cuttings sourced within 40 km of the site.

Intensive roof gardens
Intensive roof gardens are typically heavier than extensive
roof gardens, with a garden profle depth of 200-1500mm+
supporting substantial vegetation, shrubs and trees a
landscaped space for people to use for recreation, gardens
and natural habitat.
Intensive roof gardens need to be irrigated and maintained
and, because people use the garden, the roof needs to be
structurally load bearing. Fytogreen works with landscape
contractors to deliver amazing intensive gardens using
our Hydrocell growing medium.
