Positive forms of adjectives preceded and followed by As




When used in making comparisons, the positive form of an adjective is usually employed as a
predicate adjective, preceded and followed by the word as. This construction is summarized
below, followed by examples.
noun, pronoun or to be positive noun, pronoun or

COMPARISONS OF QUANTITY

To show difference: more, less, fewer + tha

With countable nouns: more / fewer
Eloise has more children than Chantal.
Chantal has fewer children than Eloise.
There are fewer dogs in Cardiff than in Bristol
I have visited fewer countries than my friend has.
He has read fewer books than she has.

With uncountable nouns: more / less
Eloise has more money than Chantal.
Chantal has less money than Eloise.
I spend less time on homework than you do.
Cats drink less water than dogs.
This new dictionary gives more informationthan the old one.

So, the rule is:
MORE + nouns that are countable or uncountable
FEWER + countable nouns
LESS + uncountable nouns

Used to do
We use used to do to talk about the past. It is not a tense but it is like a tense. It is a special
expression. We use the expression used to do for the past only.
Do not confuse used to do with with the expression be used to. They have different meanings.
Structure of Used to do

when there is did in the sentence, we say use to (without d)
when there is no did in the sentence, we say used to (with d)
Use of Used to do
