Unit 3 Assignment 1: Video Summary 1
Video Clip 1.09 Definitions
1. CRT- is a vacuum tube containing one or more electron guns (a source of electrons or
electron emitter) and a fluorescent screen used to view images.
2. LCD- is a variant of a liquid-crystal display (LCD) that uses thin-film transistor (TFT)
technology to improve image qualities such as addressability and contrast.
3. Screen Size- is the actual amount of screen space that is available to display a
picture, video or working space, without obstruction from the case or other aspects of the
unit's design.
4. Contrast Ratio- is a property of a display system, defined as the ratio of the luminance of
the brightest color (white) to that of the darkest color (black) that the system is capable
of producing.
5. Refresh rate- is the number of times in a second that display hardware draws the data.
6. Response Time LCD- is also known as "Overdrive". LCDs moderate light flow by
rotating liquid crystal molecules to various alignments where they transmit more or less
light depending on the electrical setting at each individual pixel.
7. Dot pitch- is a specification for a display, computer, image scanner, or other pixel-based
device that describes the distance, for example, between dots (sub-pixels) of the same
color on the inside of a display screen. In the case of a color display dot pitch is a
measure of the size of a triad plus the distance between the triads.
8. Pixel pitch- is a specification for a display, computer, image scanner, or other pixel-
based device that describes the distance, for example, between dots (sub-pixels) of the
same color on the inside of a display screen. In the case of a color display dot pitch is a
measure of the size of a triad plus the distance between the triads.
9. CRT Resolution- is the number of distinct pixels in each dimension that can be
displayed. It can be an ambiguous term especially as the displayed resolution is
controlled by different factors in cathode ray tube (CRT), Flat panel display which
includes Liquid crystal displays, or projection displays using fixed picture-element (pixel)
arrays.
10. LCD Resolution- LCD, LCoS or other flat panel display refers to its single
fixed resolution. As an LCD display consists of a fixed raster, it cannot change resolution
to match the signal being displayed as a CRT monitor can, meaning that optimal display
quality can be reached only when the signal input matches the native resolution.
11. Native resolution- As an LCD display consists of a fixed raster, it cannot change
resolution to match the signal being displayed as a CRT monitor can, meaning that
optimal display quality can be reached only when the signal input matches the native
resolution.
12. VGA connectors- are a three-row 15-pin DE-15 connector. The 15-pin VGA connector is
found on many video cards, computer monitors, and high definition television sets.
13. DVI- is a video display interface developed by the Digital Display Working Group
(DDWG).
14. S-video port- is an expansion which generates a feed of output images to a display.
15. PCI express slot- is a high-speed serial computer bus standard designed to replace the
older PCI, PCI-X, and AGP bus standards.
16. Modern Motherboard- is including even bigger NAND flash memory ICs on board which
are capable of storing whole compact operating.
17. Electromagnetic interference- is disturbance that affects an electrical circuit due to either
electromagnetic induction or electromagnetic radiation emitted from an external source.

18. Fluorescent lights- are a low pressure mercury-vapor gas-discharge lamp that
uses fluorescence to produce visible light.
19. Audio speakers- are speakers external to a computer, which disable the lower fidelity
built-in speaker.
