Hazard list select your hazards from the list below and use these to complete Part B
Situational Hazards Tick Physical / Chemical Hazards Tick Environmental Hazards Tick
Assault by person Contact with hot or cold liquid / vapour Litter
Over Crowding Contact with hot or cold surface Nuisance noise / vibration
Objects falling, moving or flying Electric shock Physical damage
Crush by load(s) Explosive blast Substance released into air
Working at Height (roof,
scaffolding, hoists, ladders, etc)
(Permit required)
Explosive release of stored pressure Substance released into soil / water
Vehicle impact / collision /
pedestrians
Fire Adverse Weather Conditions (outdoor
working)

Obstruction / exposed feature Hazardous / Chemical substance
(separate Assessment required)

Ergonomic risk due to lack of
space
Hot or cold environment Additional Hazards/Permits Required
(please list)
Slip, Trips and Falls Laser light (Class 1 or 2) Permit to Work Roof Access if
working on the roof

Manual Handling (separate
Assessment required)
Stroboscopic Lights (flashing lights)
Unsafe Ground conditions (loose
flooring, slippery, etc)
Vibration
Overhead Obstructions (power
lines, cables, suspended ceilings)
Noise (reading to be taken)
Sharp object / material Smoke/dust
Lone Working (Permit required) Asbestos present (see Estates for
Asbestos Register)

Confined Space (Permit required)
Machinery / Equipment (cranes,
hoists, electrical, tools etc)
Health Hazards Tick
Restriction by Work equipment or
PPE/RPE
Disease/Infection
Young Persons (under 18 years of
age)
Lack of food/water
Additional Assessments
Required
Tick Physical fatigue (unusual working
patterns, night working, etc)

Manual Handling Static body posture (standing for long
periods)

Work at Height (if using ladders) Repetitive action
DSE Stress
COSHH (chemical substances) Extra medical issues adding further risk
(please list)

Risk Matrix use this to determine risk for each hazard i.e. how bad and how likely

Likelihood of Harm
Severity of Harm Unlikely Possible Probable
Slight e.g. minor cuts and bruising, irritation, headaches, etc
Very low Low Medium
Moderate e.g. deep cuts, burns, minor fractures, etc
Low Medium High

Severe e.g. major fractures, poisonings, multiple & fatal injuries etc
Medium High Extremely high

RISK ASSESSMENT FORM

Activity - Using an Electric Hand Drill
Location where this activity will take place: College wide

Hazards
2
List what could cause harm from this activity
e.g. working at height, trip hazard, fire, etc.
Who exposed
List who might be harmed
from this activity esp. at risk
groups e.g. staff, public,
children, disabled, elderly
etc.
Risk Rating
3

For each hazard, decide
level of risk as if you were to
do the activity without your
controls
Control measures
For each hazard, list the measures you will be taking to minimise the risk identified
e.g. appointing competent persons, training received, use of personal protective equipment, provision of
first aid, etc.
Residual Risk
Rating
3

For each hazard, now
decide level of risk
once all your controls
are in place
Working at Height
Falls, overhead obstructions, unsafe
floor/ground conditions

Estates Staff
Other staff and students
who have undergone
competency training in
this equipment
High This will be determined by the job to be carried out. If using a ladder/step ladder refer to the
Working at Height Risk Assessment for Ladders and Step Ladders for guidance.

If working on the roof an additional Permit to Work Roof Access will be required
Medium
Sharp Object/material

Estates Staff Low All drill bits will be carried in a tool belt and removed and fitted according to the
manufacturers instructions
V Low
Slips, Trips and Falls Estates Staff
Staff and students (if
used in public walkways)
Medium If used in public areas cables to be redirected so that they do not cross walkways, if this is
not possible then cable mats and barriers to be used with warning signs erected indicating
trailing cable.
Low
Machinery/Equipment
Electric hand tool

Estates Staff
Other staff and students
who have undergone
competency training in
this equipment
Medium Staff fully trained in safe use and handling. Preferably a battery operated drill will be used.

Whether electric or battery operated the equipment will be checked before each use to
ensure that there are no defects in the cable (electric), casing, plug or chuck, etc.

Operator will ensure that there is plenty of room to move comfortably around the material
being worked on and that the material is securely clamped where possible

If drilling into walls, the user will check for hidden cables, water pipes etc and if present re-
plan work.

If working at height, area to be cordoned off and warning signs erected
Low
Fire

Estates Staff
All Staff and Students
High Equipment will be checked for defects before each use to minimise the risk of possible
electrical faults or fire.
Low
Electric shock

Estates Staff
Other staff and students
who have undergone
competency training in
this equipment

Medium Power supply to be disconnected when changing drill heads or attachments. The equipment
will be checked before each use to ensure that there are no defects in the cable, casing, plug
or cutting head.

If electric drill being used the power cable will be kept clear of the moving parts at all times.
