A MESSAGE FROM YOUR VICE - CHANCELLOR

Dr. R.A. Mashelkar, one of the most respected scientists

of India, was asked by a correspondent about how the
academic institutions could prepare for change, required
to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century. He
said, You need the right kind of leadership for this.
Gujarat Technological University (GTU) is doing this. That
was published in the Mumbai edition of Economic Times of 28
th
March 2013.

The Principal Secretary to Government of Karnataka, Education Department,
wrote that a presentation would be made on the experience at GTU in involving
technical students for taking up innovative projects. This was in a notice dated
21
st
May 2014 for a meeting at the Karnataka State Higher Education Council.

Dr. Akhilesh Pandey, Chairman of the MP Private Universities
Regulatory Commission, Bhopal said, If the Universities adopt the innovative
projects, being operated at GTU, it would be beneficial for them. This was
reported in Daily Bhaskar of Bhopal on 28
th
May 2014.

When our students, faculty members and we at GTU office learn about the
unsolicited praise, being given by eminent persons, outside Gujarat, we feel
good. Such praise should immediately remind us about the large gap between
what we are able to do today and what the students and faculty members are
able to achieve at the great universities of the world.

We completed the examinations in June 2014. This year for the first time, we
have been able to declare the results within about a month of the last date of
the examinations. But the issues are about the quality of our output.

Each one of the faculty members has to ask himself/ herself the following
questions: Were we able to set up papers, which evaluated the understanding

rather than rote-learning? Did we assess the answer-books with due care? Did we conduct the practical
examinations and viva-voce examinations so that we were able to evaluate every student fairly? Were we able to
provide excellent education to our students?

Every one of the students has to ask himself/ herself: Did we acquit ourselves well in the examinations? Had
we studied every day during the semester, without missing a single class or laboratory or workshop? Did we
behave courteously with all in our class and in our college and did we maintain appropriate discipline?

We at the University have to ask ourselves: Are we continuously improving our systems for delivery of proper
service to all our stake-holders? Are we receptive to feedback, particularly the one, which shows our
shortcomings? If a stake-holder, be he/ she a student or a parent or a faculty member, comes to any office of
the University, does he/ she go back with satisfaction or not?

The new academic year has started for most of the classes in most of the programs. The first year classes
would start on 24
th
of July after the admission is declared by ACPC on 21
st
of July. Let us all work so that at the
end of the semester, we all should be able to answer the above questions in a positive and satisfactory way. If we
are able to do so, we would have moved our University further on the path to becoming a great University.

Many of the Research work
done by GTU students is of
Canadian Standards. Even the
subjects of research are quite
similar. said Dr. Vasu Apanna, the
Dean of Pharmacy at Laurentian
University, Canada. Dr. Apanna
evaluated more than 30 students at
GTU Pharmacy Research Week. He
was impressed with the concept of
Research Week. He said that the
work of some of the students was
really good. Some presentations
were as good as the presentations
we see in Canada.

GTU organizes Research Week
as an evaluation process of the
Ph. D and Masters Students for the
mid-semester review of the final
year thesis work of Pharmacy,
Management and Engineering
students. More than 4000 students
attended this mid semester review
during the months of March and
April 2014. This was the 3rd
Research Week organized by GTU.
Nearly 13 foreign experts from the
Universities of USA & Canada also
joined the Research Week 2014
and were quite impressed with the
work of scholars. More than 50
experts from IITs & NITs also
attended the research week and
evaluated the work of students.
More than 80 Workshops were
organized during the research
week by different experts.

Dr. Akshai Aggarwal, Vice
Chancellor of GTU says that the
research week not only reviews the
work of students it also provides
mentoring. Moreover, open source
front of review creates excellence
in the thesis work at all colleges
across the state. Evening
workshops by experts along with
the morning session of review
created a Kumbh Mela of knowl-
edge seekers.
Another expert from Kansas
State University, USA was Dr. M. S.
Hosni. He says that Its a pleasure
to be here. I appreciate the
opportunity to interact with
students and professors. Research
Topics for students' work are
excellent. I saw various types of
projects conducted here like
applied research as well as scientific
base type research. There were
number of projects that were of
highest quality. They were
comparable to the quality that I
have seen elsewhere.
Many of the External experts not
only appreciated the Research
her dissertation topic. The format
of PSAR report was divided into 4
parts & comprising a total of 40
questions. Study of PSAR was
introduced to increase novelty in
the dissertation work. It will also
stop the repetitive research as
students will get ideas about latest
research happening in the area of
dissertation projects.

GTU is constantly engaged in
promoting IPR among the students
and faculties. Moving one step
further in promoting IPR GTU

India is the world's largest
democracy. It is one of the world's
oldest civilizations, yet a very young
nation. Elections to its Parliament
are held once every 5 years. Year
2014 was the year of Loksabha
Election in India and the best time
to study the democracy of India.
Taking an advantage of the right
time GTU initiated a Multi Location
Collaborative Learning (MLCL)
Project under which the first phase
of the research focused on the Lok-
sabha Election 2014 in India. An
Analytical Study on Relative Impact
& Objectivity of Different Media
was done which revealed some
very interesting FAQs about rela-
tion between Media and the Elec-
tions.

In the study conducted on
various media , it is found that the
BJP has received the highest
attention/coverage by media
among all political parties, including
both the positive and negative
types of coverage with the
weightage of 22.6 % followed by
INC (15%) and AAP (12.8 %).
Another survey reveals that 51.42
% people consider the media news
for making their decision for voting
while 21.93 % people disagreed on
the media impact on their voting
decision and 26.65 % people
responded neutrally. On the
ground of the opinion regarding
the maximum news coverage of
political parties in media and its
effect on their voting decision, the
respondents have been valued for
their perception towards a
particular political party. From the
responses it is found that about
75% of the respondents have
perused fair image of BJP followed
by Congress (14%) and AAP
(5-6%). Here, the perception of the
viewer is considered and not the
type of news covered i.e. either
positive or negative.
Dr. Akshai Aggarwal , Vice
Chancellor of GTU says that the
MLCL Project by the Faculty of
Management at GTU is the first
attempt under the multi-national-
multi-institute research project on
studying the democracies of the
world. GTUs young researchers
have been able to contribute a very
interesting and useful study by
looking at the elections of 2014.
Since the evening of 12
th
May 2014,
the exit poll data has become
available. The calculation on the
basis of media attention, reported
in this study, does not fully match
the exit polls. However, media
attention has got to be augmented
with many other factors like the
performance of the incumbent
government, perceived charisma of
the candidates, the strength of the
organizations backing the
candidates etc. The first part of the
study is looking at only one of the
factors. As we move ahead and
study the democracies in the rest of
the world and the democracy in
action at various levels in India, we
may be able to develop greater
insights into how a democracy can
strive to continuously improve its
working so that it can be said to be
by the people, of the people and
for the people.
Views from 470 people were
collected from 7 different cities of
the state of Gujarat. GTU had
involved 8 different management
institutes in Himmatnagar,
Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Rajkot,
Bharuch, Navsari & Patan in this
study.

A joint research on the subject
of An Analytical Study on Relative
Impact & Objectivity of Different
Media was initiated under the
project called Multi Location
Collaborative Learning (MLCL).
MLCL is being directed in India by
GTU Management PG Research
Centers and in Germany by DHBW
University. A university in South
Africa and a University in Slovenia
have also been invited to join this
research project.

There are more than 1200
Makers spaces in the world
currently. These are the places
where one can visit and experiment
with their creative skills, be it art
and craft or learning experiment or
work experiments. These places
offer freedom to open the mind to
create which enable hobbyist/
hackers/ developers/ students to
explore and ultimately end up
building innovative products /
projects. Similar setups are also
required in India which till date
does not have any Maker Space.
To built the concept of Makers
Space in India GTU has started a
Community Innovation and
Co-Creation Centre (C-i-C3) at its
AhmedabadACPC Campus. The
sole purpose of the centre at GTU
is to foster innovation, research and
entrepreneurship among the
students of Gujarat.

Dr. Akshai Aggarwal, Vice
Chancellor of GTU says that GTU
has set up its first Community
Innovation Co-Creation Center
(C-i-C3) in March 2014. During this
year, GTU will establish a few more
C-i-C3s all across the State. This is
being done to develop an
environment, which can help our
students develop as technologists,
who are respected for their
creativity in their field.
C-i-C3 organized its first event
Hack-Pi-Dunio - Hackathon that
originated new innovations in 36
hours during 11th to 13th April
2014. Hack-Pi-Duino was Gujarats
first ever Arduino based Hackathon
organised by GTU. It provided a
platform for all hackers, developers,
hobbyists and students to
showcase their talents and compete
with the brightest minds. In Hack-Pi
-Dunio a total of 14 teams were
selected from the pool of
applicants. GTU had provided one
Arduino Board and a hardware
module to each participant. These
14 teams worked enthusiastically
day and night to bring out running
prototypes of their ideas.
The judging panel of the event
including Mr. Haren Shah, Peach
Technovations Pvt. Ltd, Mr. Ninad
Shastri, Xplora Design Skool,and
Prof. Mihir Shah of VGEC were
surprised to see the creativity of the
students at the event. The creation
of students makes the C-i-C3 lab a
place worth investing in the
creativity.
The lab is open for all GTU
students. GTU is also looking
forward to equip the lab with the
equipment which can help the
students in experimenting and
creating.
Authenticity of the examination
is the most important part of any
education system. GTU has
implemented a unique system of
question paper designing , printing
and delivering to avoid any chance
of leak. Moving one step forward in
making the examination process
transparent GTU has made the
CCTV surveillance compulsory for
the examination centres before the
examination of Summer 2014.

. then India would not have been the largest democracy of the world
Sardar Patel has played a significant role in uniting India at
the time of Independence. The Iron man of India who com-
pleted this mammoth task with his leadership skills has several
lessons to teach to the generation of 21st century.

Post Graduate Research Centres of GTU published a spe-
cial issue of Anantyam (newsletter of PG Research Centres) on
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in March 2014. The special issue has
17 different articles that throw light on the leadership lessons
from the life of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and throw light on
ideology of this leader.

Anantyam is a newsletter, which is designed to disseminate
information about the research work being carried out at the
Post-graduate Research Centers of GTU. This is a special issue
of the Newsletter, which takes note of the campaign for the
Statue of Unity being put up on an island called Sadhu Bet in
Narmada directly facing the Sardar Sarovar Dam says Dr. Ak-
shai Aggarwal , Vice Chancellor of GTU. In India, Sardar Patel
accomplished a task, which was much more complex and stu-
pendous. His success was achieved with such a finesse and
elegance, that it looked like the work of a magician. But the
magic was in the personality and reputation of Sardar and this
persona had been created through an exemplary leadership
over many decades of the fight for independence.

One can read this special Issue on the website of GTU in
the section of NewsletterAnantyam (www.gtu.ac.in) or can
