Assignment #1

FUNDAMENTALS OF POWER SYSTEMS ANALYSIS
(EECE 471)

June 5, 2013
It is required to study the performance of the simple power transmission system shown in Fig. 1
below. The analysis is to be done the Power-World simulator that comes attached to the textbook by
Sarma, Glover, and Overbye. The transmission line has a length of 200 km with a series reactance x
l
=
0.36/ km, resistance r
l
= 0.08/ km, and susceptance b
l
= 3.8 S/ km. The rest of the data is given on
the diagram below.

Your report should address the points below, but should start with a section explaining the problem
you are solving and end with a conclusion section summarizing the main observations on the results
differences. Please no diagrams should be presented without commentary of at least 5 lines.

Figure 1: Simple power transmission system

a) Calculate the impedances of the lines and transformers in per unit to a 100 MVA base and model
the above system using the Power World simulator. If each phase has a conductor area of 200
mm

and current density of 2.5 A/ mm

at the operating conditions (T
c
= 75C, T
a
= 35C), then
determine a suitable value for the transmission MVA line rating. What should be the
transformers connections and why?
b) Carry out a power flow analysis of this system when the two lines are in service and determine
the busbar voltages and phase angles, the active and reactive flows in the lines and transformers.
Also determine the active and reactive power supplied by the generator. Comment on the results.
c) Switch out one of the lines and repeat Part b) display the results and comment on them noting and
explaining differences with those of Part b). The differences, you may be looking for, are changes
in voltages magnitudes and phase angles, and in powers flows. What can be done to improve the
quality of the supply? Implement the proposed improvement and comment on the new results.
d) Reduce the active and reactive load by 50% and repeat Part b), and again display the results and
comment on them explaining any noted differences. Should any improvement be implemented to
allow proper system operation?
