National Geographic Traveler magazine and Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau are pleased to bring you a unique
photography experience. This comprehensive workshop promises to make you a better digital photographer by
sharpening your skills, inspiring you to see and photograph subjects in new and diferent ways, and helping you
avoid the pitfalls of shooting in the digital age.
WHAT YOU SHOULD BRING
EQUIPMENT NEEDED FOR SEMINAR:
Digital SLR camera
Laptop computeryou will need to download and edit the photos you take during the photo
sessions in the feld
Batteries/battery charger
Camera bag
Extra lens and fash
Tripod (Optional)
Memory cards
Card reader to download pictures to computer (preferred) OR Cable to connect camera to laptop
PERSONAL ITEMS:
Comfortable walking shoes, backpack for equipment and water, sunscreen, sunglasses, and hat
Photo seminar is recommended for those with previous photography experience.
Amateurs and serious amateurs welcome.

secrets for capturing the spirit of a place and bringing back images of enduring signifcance. You will get a behind-the-
scenes look at how amazing photos are made not taken. Learn how to build pictures from the ground up by knowing
how to explore a place visually, how to fnd the perfect lighting, and how to anticipate a great moment. Discover why
the decisive moment is such a powerful photographic concept.

TOPICS WORKSHOP WILL COVER
COMPOSITION AND LIGHT
Explore two of the most basic elements needed to create any beautiful image. Youll see the importance of defning
your subjects; incorporating shapes, colors, and textures; and using lighting techniques to vary and infuence a photo.
VISION AND VOICE
How do you choose the content for your images? Learn how to express something personal through your images and
create your own artistic voice. Great subject matter often comes from seeing something that others dont within a
familiar setting and then capturing it in your photo.
THE POWER OF MOMENT
Great photographs convey information, ideas, and emotion. Learn how to sharpen your skill for fnding and capturing
decisive moments that will refect whats truly special about the places, people, and experiences you witness.
LEARNING TO SEE
Train your eyes to look for photos that tell a story. Discover the visual, intellectual, and intuitive elements that go
into making stunning photographs. Explore how travel photography styles have changed and what makes certain
photos leave a lasting impression.
THE ART OF TAKING PICTURES
Color is the most signifcant element in composition. It commands the viewers eye and infuences the feel of a
picture. Discover how to work with color, contrasts, and balance, so you can make the most aesthetically appealing
images possible.

special photography presentation

The morning session will cover topics and specifcs on working with digital photography, the
challenges and pitfalls to avoid. Topics include:
Technique presentationsgetting back to basics
Composition, moment, light
How to work with fash, lenses, tripods
Making great pictures: methods for better travel photography

The afternoon session will prepare you for the afternoon photo assignment and go over
techniques on the road.

Annie and Dan will lead you on a special excursion to American West Ranch for an
afternoon of shooting opportunities to include portraits, action photos, and landscapes.

PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP ITINERARY
SUNDAY, APRIL 6

5:45 am Sunrise Outdoor Photography Assignment
You will be given a special photo assignment in the Camelback mountains where you will work
with light and sunrise shooting landscapes.
8:009:00 am Full breakfast
9:00 am Interactive Workshop with Participants
Morning class will be devoted to reviewing and discussing images taken during the two outdoor
photo assignments. You will be asked to download your photographs on your computer. Prepare
a selection of images from your photo assignments, approximately 1024w x 768h pixels at 72
dpi that can be projected in the classroom. National Geographic staf will assist you to download
them onto a memory stick where Annie and Dan will project them for a critique session.

5:006:00 pm Cocktail Reception with the photographers, a fnal get-together with the group, Annie and Dan,
before the sunset shoot.

Dan and Annie will take you on a fnal photo shoot on the hotel grounds that will show you
additional composition and lighting techniques.

Scottsdale.
ANNIE GRIFFITHS
One of the frst women photographers to work for
National Geographic, Grifths has photographed
in more than a hundred countries. She worked
on dozens of magazine and book projects for the
National Geographic Society, including stories on
Lawrence of Arabia, Baja California, New Zealand,
and Jerusalem. She has won numerous awards and
has authored a number of books including the National Geographic book, Simply Beautiful
Photographs. In addition, Annie is deeply committed to photographing for aid organizations
around the world. She is the Executive Director of Ripple Efect Images, a collective of
photographers who document the programs that are empowering women and girls in the
developing world, especially as they deal with the devastating efects of climate change.
DAN WESTERGREN
As Senior Photo Editor for National Geographic Traveler
magazine, Dan Westergren is responsible for the
magazines photographic vision. While under his watchful
eye, National Geographic Traveler has won numerous
awards for photography. Besides photo editing, Dan is
an accomplished photographer who has photographed a
variety of articles for Traveler magazine. He particularly
enjoys cold, high places, having photographed the summits
of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Mt. Blanc, and the Matterhorn for the
pages of Traveler. He is also an experienced teacher, having
led workshops for National Geographic Expeditions in
places such as Santa Fe, New Mexico, Tuscany, Italy, Baja,
Mexico, Antarctica and the Arctic.
