1. Greeting Strangers

A: Hi, there. My name‟s Paul Brown. I‟m from the United States. B: Nice to meet you, Paul. My name‟s Kelly Cook. You can call me Kelly. I‟m from Canada. A: Nice to meet you, too, Kelly. Canada is a beautiful country!

1Hi, there. Kim‟s NoteThis is a very casual and common way to greet someone. However, guys use this greeting to girls much more frequently than girls use it to guys. It is a little bit flirtatious because it sounds as though someone has just caught your eye for attention. But if you want to get a guy‟s attention, I highly recommen d this greeting!

2Nice to meet you. I‟m glad/pleased to meet you. Nice meeting you. Nice to meet you, too. (正式) 或 Same here.

A: I don’t think we’ve met before. My name‟s Sam. 我叫山姆) B: No, I don‟t think so either. Nice to meet you. I‟m Ann.

A: Hello! Are you a friend of Bill’s? B: Yes. My name‟s Sal ly. And you are… 我叫莎利,你是„„) A: I‟m his roommate, David. I’ve heard so much about you from Bill.

A: Excuse me, but aren’t you the President of the United States? B: As a matter of fact I am.

A: Hi, beautiful day, isn’t it? B: It sure is. 【Kim‟s NoteThis is probably the most common greeting among strangers. Don‟t let an opportunity to speak English pass you by because you don‟t know what to say in respon se to this common greeting!

【疯狂小故事】 由于我们以前的中学课本上关于问候的用语只有“How are you?”“Fine, thank you, and you?”“I‟m fine, too.” 有一个中国学生在车站看到有一个外国朋友,心想这是一个难得的机会可以卖弄一下自己的 英语,于是在心里反复操练“How are you?”“Fine, thank you, and you?”“I‟m fine, too.” “Beautiful day, isn‟t?” 呢,他应该问“ How are you?”

1My name‟s… (2I‟m from… (3Are you a friend of…? (4Excuse me, but aren‟t you…? (5I‟ve heard so much about you from…

1I don't think we’ve met before.

2I’ve heard so much about you. Kim‟s NoteEven if this isn‟t exactly true, it will make the person you meet feel very special. Everyone likes to think they are well known, or popular. Just be careful, in case the person quickly asks you what you‟ve heard. You can always respond with a safe, but vague answer. For example:

A: I‟ve heard so much about you. B: Really? What have you heard? A: Oh, a lot of good things.

3Hi, beautiful day, isn’t it? 【Culture NoteIt is common to comment on the weather as a means of greeting people, for example, „Beautiful day, isn‟t it?‟ But it is rare to simply make a plain descriptive statement, such as „It‟s raining today, isn‟t it?‟ It is much more normal to add some kind of opinion or evaluation and say, for example, „It‟s raining incredibly hard today, isn‟t it?‟ 把评论天气作为问候他人的方式是十分普遍的,例如“Beautiful day, isn‟t it?”。 而是 通常加上一些观点或评价,例如“It‟s raining incredibly hard today, isn‟t it?”。

A: I hope you don‟t mind my asking, but haven‟t we met somewhere before? B: Oh, we attended Crazy English Camp together three months ago. A: Oh.Right! That‟s it. How is everything with you?

A: Hi, great party, isn‟t it? B: Yeah. We‟re having a great time. How about your friends? A: Oh, they are having fun, too.

(1I hope you don‟t mind my asking, but haven‟t we met somewhere before? 【Kim‟s Note This is a polite and clever way to meet someone! If you think a person looks interesting, you can try this sentence to break the ice and strike up a conversation.

2How is everything with you?

3We‟re having a great time/having fun.

* As a matter of fact, I do study English at Beijing Uni versity.

* I hate going to parties. I never know how to break the ice and start conversations with people. 【Kim‟s NoteThis is a very important phrase and skill in American life. Every time you go to a meeting or a conference in America you will need this ability.

So, I consider it one of China‟s great contributions to international communication. Use it and be proud of your English and your Chinese culture at the same time!

(2Another common way of greeting in Chinese is to ask „Where are you going?‟ Foreigners living in China, who are not yet familiar with the Chinese culture, often complain about being asked such a question. Some even complain that their room attendants are SPIES because the attendants regularly greet them with „Where are you going?‟. They do not recognize it as a Chinese greeting!

(3Another common way of greeting in Chinese is to state what somebody is doing. For example, if you meet someone who is obviously going to the dining hall, you may make a comment like „Going to dinner!‟ Often in English this sounds a little strange because the comment seems to state the obvious. In such situations, it is possible to simply greet the person with a common greeting like „Hello‟. Bu t if you wish to add something extra, you could say, „Hello. Have a nice dinner!‟ This is much more usual than simply describing what the person is doing. Now for example: At 12:00, two colleagues passing each other on the way out to lunch, but seeing each other the first time that day.

A: Hi, Kim. How‟s it going? B: Not bad. Have a nice lunch!

Kim‟s NoteIt takes a lot of confidence to introduce yourself to someone you don‟t know! Self-introduction is even a challenge for native speakers. Kim‟s note“Have fun!” is a common way to say goodbye in American English. It means enjoy yourself wherever you are going. Don‟t let this simple two word goodbye confuse you. Use it and sound like a native speaker. Sometimes I say this to Teacher Li when he leaves and he sharply responds “I‟m not going to have fun, I‟m going to a meeting!” I have to remind him it‟s just an expression, likemanzou. It doesn‟t really mean anything! You see how much you can learn from cultural differences. “Have fun!”

Academy Awards Speech

Good evening! Ladies and gentlemen, Thank you! Thank you so much! Oh, My God. I just can‟t believe it. Is it real or am I just dreaming? Please forgive me. I am, I am just so shocked and so thankful. I never expected this award tonight. I’m very grateful to receive this award for “Best Actress.” I can’t begin to tell you how much I appreciate this great honor. There are so many people I’d like to thank. First of all, I want to thank my parents for bringing me into this world. I also want to express my gratitude to all of my teachers over the years, but especially to my acting teacher Clark Johnson who taught me everything I know. I want to thank my husband, for his understanding and kindness. And finally, I want to express my appreciation to all of my friends for their support, especially to Martin Miller, for being there when I needed him. There are just too many people I should thank and I know I am probably forgetting someone. So again, I just want to say thank you to everyone who helped me, supported me, or just listened to me when I needed a shoulder to cry on. This award means a great deal to me. Words can‟t express how honored I feel at this moment. I will remember this night for the rest my life! Thank you very much.

Culture Note

The phrase „thank you‟ is commonly used in both English and Chinese. It expresses gratefulness for a number of things, such as for a present, an invitation, for help, or for an offer of help or other kinds of offers. However, there are some differences between the two languages in the exact way in which this phrase is used. Typically in Chinese, this phrase is not used very often between very close friends or family members. If it is used in such cases it may sound strange or imply a distance in the relationship. However, in English, „thank you‟ is used in almost every circumstance, no matter whether the people are strangers or intimate friends. Not to use it would often seem rude and might indicate that the person is taking the other for granted.

Culture Note

In Chinese when people pay compliments, it is common to refuse them; for example, if somebody says, “You speak English very well”, the response may be “No, no, my English is very poor.” And people may say this, even if they feel that their English is good. To accept a compliment might seem too arrogant in Chinese. However, in English people can reply in a variety of ways. In the majority of circumstances, it is perfectly normal to accept a compliment, unless the compliment is very obviously untrue. So people frequently respond by simply saying “Thank you”. Another more modest and useful way is to say, “Far from it.” I think this is better than refusing the compliment altogether and more modest than just saying “thank you”. A: Your English/Chinese is really amazing. B: Far from it.

Asian people have a more difficult time saying nodirectly than western people do. Many times Asian people will just remain silent or offer an explanation such as, “It‟s not convenient right now” instead of just saying a blunt “no” as a western person would. Knowing this culture difference can give you a big advantage when communicating.
