With increasing stringent requirements, extensive work has been carried out at JSW Steel,
Vijayanagar works to develop higher grade steels, to meet the growing needs of customers in their
endeavor to reduce costs and make high end products. The successful development and production of
these strength steels requires a close control of process parameters, alloy designing and cleanliness
controls.

JSW Steel, Vijayanagar Works is presently a 7Mtpa integrated steel plant having two modules of
COREX C-2000 to produce 1.6 Mtpa and three Blast furnaces to produce 5.4 Mtpa of hot metal. Two
steel melt shops comprise five Basic oxygen furnaces, four Ladle heating furnaces, two RH degasser
and Four single strand Slab casters and a eight strand billet caster. JSW Vijayanagar works also
comprises of Hot strip mill to produce 2.5 Mtpa of HR Coils and 1.1 Mtpa of CR coils. The product
range comprises of low carbon aluminium killed (LCAK), tube, structural, line pipe, micro-alloyed,
and a range of medium carbon steels.

For enhanced transport efficiency and reduced pipe laying costs, by the use of thinner wall pipes, the
demand for high strength line pipe steels is rapidly growing. JSW Steel has started commercial
production of line pipe steels since its inception and added many new grades. JSW Steel has
successfully developed a wide range of line pipe steels (X42 to X70) and HSLA steels over the years.
JSW steel has even customized some the line pipe steels with low YS/UTS ratio and excellent low
temperature toughness. JSW steel is adding up 10-15 new grades every year in its diversified list of
steel products. Introduction of Hot Metal Pre-Treatment and RH de-gasser is a step towards
developing low sulphur, low phosphorous, low nitrogen and low hydrogen steels. JSW steel has
expanded to 7mtpa in last two years and included a CRM complex, a wire rod mill and a bar mill.
This has further diversified the list of grades. CRM at JSW has produced C-Mn-440 and C-Mn-
microalloy grades for some specific automobile applications in addition to IF steels. Within a very
short span of its commissioning WRM has produced earth quack resistant and corrosion resistance
steels with innovative heat treatment techniques. With the proposed hot strip mill II JSW steel has
planned to develop high strength line pipe steels (X80 and above) and dual phase steels.

This paper describes the development of various new products developed at JSW steel, and
addresses various issues of steel making and rolling to arrive at optimum structure and properties
for its specific applications.
