New look CDA

Four Deaf People from Peterborough led by Simon Richardson gave up their time to
do some painting CDA. They painted an undercoat and a gloss on most of outdoor
windows, the garage, back and front doors. They also painted the Ladies, Mens and
Disabled toilets. A big Thank you to our four volunteers.

Peterborough Deaf Drop in
Jason Sharpe had showed them the lesson about V V signing (Visual Vernacular)
in July. VV signing is body moving to tell the story without using BSL signs or
talking but you have to stay at same position all the time.
In August children were excited about their school break and outing but it was
also busy for parents to purchase their new uniforms and Younger Deaf to talk
about which course are suitable for them to attend.
September is back to school time, we shared our holiday experience. Also we are
missing the sounds of the younger Deaf as they are begin their college courses. I
wish them all the best for their courses.
We are proud of Jason Sharpe he had his graduation with 2.1 Bachelor of Science
with Honours in computing and information systems, he has worked REALLY HARD
for 6 years studying part time. It has taken a long time but he got the result and
achieved at last. He shows us Deaf People can do with the hard work.

Huntingdon Deaf Lunchtime Group
This small Drop-in group is still going well. We have average attendance of ten
people. We have regular three Deaf Wheelchairs users attending this drop-in. The
Library is a good location because it is near to Bus Station and it is in central of
Huntingdon so it is easy for
Wheelchair users making their own
way without any help. In
September thirteen turned up and
in October we had two birthday
celebrations, one for Tony
Vanterpool and another one for
Marion Gossland. We brought cakes
for them and we all sang/signed Happy Birthday

regular visitor to Hilda. Peter catches the bus from Kings Lynn to Wisbech. Then
he gets off in Wisbech Bus Station and he walk a long way to Lyncroft Care Home

Peter often have friendly argument which certainly amused Hilda a lot.

Fenland Deaf Drop-in

On 18
th
July Christine Tarrant and I with Sue & John
arrived at Fenland Deaf Drop-in at 9.30am, getting
ready for many deaf people to come to the Drop-in.
About 45 Deaf people from Romford arrived late
because they went for sightseeing and shopping at
Ely. Christine Tarrant was not at all happy about it as
they arrived at 1.30pm instead of 11.30am!
Other deaf people from Kings Lynn, Ely, Ipswich,
Wisbech and Peterborough were there so there were
just over 90 people!
At 1.45pm everyone enjoyed their sandwiches, Rolls,
Cakes etc. Catherine Palmer made several beautiful
cakes. After that, twelve raffle prizes were given out
from 10 to 25. Godfrey Palmer then played Grand
Bingo and many deaf people won good money. Thanks
to everyone who helped Christine Tarrant who was in
charge for refreshment side. Also thanks to Catherine
& Godfrey Palmer, Gillian Thorburn, Carol Knott,
Gillian Richardson, Linda Murray, Ann Ratcliffe, Pam
White, Margaret Ashwell, John and Sue Uren, Angela &
Ron Watson.
Romford Deaf Club have
asked Christine Tarrant
that they would like to
come again for another
Grand Bingo in 2014.
On 9
th
August.
Thanks to Godfrey Palmer
for covering Michael Pape
as Michael was
unavailable.
For 12

We will have a buffet
party. 3 per person for
entrance. After that there
will be a Grand Bingo. It

people with Computer training and he is able to communicate on a
One to One basis using BSL. We have been very lucky to have
Brendan as it is very difficult to find someone who has his skills in
using computers as well as being able to use a variety of different
communication methods to meet a wide range of communication
needs! iPads are one of the things he can help you with help you to
understand how to get the best out of it. Please do let me know if you need any
help with understanding how to use a computer and I can arrange a training date

Editors article
I thought CDAs AGM went really well and it was good to see so many people
there. I think we should stick to a 2pm start next year.
I was so pleased to see most of the painting done outside the building and some
of the inside too. A lot of people thought I chose the colour, something to do with
Man U but it was not my idea so I will leave it to you to continue guessing who
suggested it to me! If I have my own way I would pick black and Amber, the
colour of my beloved team, Hull City.
We have provisionally booked Deaf Day Thursday 22
nd
May 2014 but we have not
yet received confirmation in black and white. It will be at the Corn Exchange in the
centre of St Ives. Once we have received confirmation and the cost and if we are
happy then we will start to get the ball rolling with things like posters etc. The
Deaf Day will start something like 1pm to 7pm.
Next year we hope to have a BSL Walk every month.
We have got a small amount of funding from Comic Relief for Deaf Advocacy in the
Peterborough area. I am excited about the new project that is about to start soon
and it is really wonderful to know that Ruth Godden will be involved.
We have got a wonderful staff team in our office and they have all really worked
hard to give their best for the local deaf community. I am sure the Trustees are
trying their best to ensure our plans for long term future.

Jason Sharpes Graduated Day
On September 26th Jason Sharpe graduated at the
Peterborough Cathedral. I, as Jason's daughter, felt so
excited and proud that I were to go to see my dad
graduate with flying colours, his marks were a 2.1. Since
my father is deaf he uses BSL to communicate, otherwise
known as British Sign Language.
Before Jason's big day we discussed Jason's feelings
about tomorrow he replied "Excited but also emotional it
shows we deaf people can do it!". When he graduated his
parents, my mum and I went to see him graduate, we
went to see him step proudly on to that stage and revive
his diploma.
When we arrived at the bull hotel and my dad collected his gown I could see in his
face he was nervous but trying hard not to show it! Once we took our pictures the
photographer kept fussing over my dad to get him in the perfect position, my dad
looked tired by the end of the photos from all that fussing!
We got to the Cathedral waiting anxiously for my dad to walk down the aisle and
guess what! My dad was first a large grin spread across my face, my dad is going
to graduate! After the graduates I was surprised to see amongst the mayor and
lecture people came... Louis Smith! He became an Honorary Doctor of Health
Sciences.
The ceremony began and one by one the graduates received their diplomas. After
a long wait my dad came on the stage! I smiled. He received his degree for
Bachelor of Science with Honours Computing and Information Systems and went
back with a roaring applause!
After the ceremony we ate also that was the time I could ask my dad how he felt
and he smiled and said to me. "Amazing. Just AMAZING!"

Blackburn hospital launches live BSL interpreting
project
I have copied an article from Hearing Times I think it is good and I hope we can
spread it across UK!

A new webcam will ensure deaf patients receive better care at Blackburns urgent
care centre, health chiefs have announced.

Blackburn with Darwen Council and East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust has
launched a pilot project to enable nurses to connect with a British Sign Language
interpreter via a Skype video call, so they can translate on behalf of deaf patients
and nursing staff when discussing symptoms and treatment.

For the first time, it will give deaf patients the same access to services as other
patients, and will also save the East Lancashire Deaf Society, and hospital, time
and money.

Previously, assessment of deaf patients at the urgent care unit had to be delayed
until an on-call interpreter could travel to the site, with interpreters travel
expenses and time factored into the costs.
