The KOPING Kit is intended to assist families to identify needs and improve access to support.

Step 1: Identify Family or Individual Support Needs

Working with the family/individual – use the following prompts to identify areas that families or individuals may require support.
1. Support and information for children and young people whose parent or carer has a mental health problem ❑
2. Support and information for parents or carers who have a mental health problem ❑
3. Support and information for partners, family or friends ❑
4. Respite and lifestyle support - a break for family members or for the person with a mental health problem ❑
5. Education, information or support in parenting ❑
6. General family support or practical support ❑
7. Other useful resources ❑
8. Recommended websites and suggested reading ❑
Step 2: Identification of Support Options
Using the Koping Kit, identify relevant services or resources that are available in the Brisbane North area to meet the
identified needs of the family or individual.
Step 3: Referral
Contact the relevant organisation or service provider to determine if they are the most appropriate service for the family or
individual. Referrers also need to determine if the service has the capacity to provide an adequate level of support to the
family or individual.
Information regarding families or individuals is not to be released and referrals are not to be made to services without
permission, except where there is concern regarding the safety or care of family members.
Documentation:
Service providers are advised to make relevant notes in service files.

The KOPING Program

Working together to support children and young people in families where a parent or
caregiver is living with a mental health problem
The KOPING Forum is an interagency network in the RCH, RBWH, TPCH and Health Service Districts made up of
representatives from Government services, private providers, community agencies and community members;
The KOPING Kit is a referral kit to assist adults, children and service providers to access appropriate services;
The KOPING Library is a dedicated library that stocks resources relevant to the area (brochures, storybooks, references,
videos), loans free of charge;
The KOPING Video is a resource developed in consultation with children, young people and adult children affected by
parental mental illness and tells the stories of 4 young people and their families;
The KOPING Adolescent Program is a 3 session peer support program for 12-18 year olds affected by parental mental
illness. It is free, fun, confidential, transport available;
The Family Safety Plan (and Baby Safety Plan) are aimed at minimizing the disruption that occurs when a parent is
hospitalized. It can be used when the parent or caregiver is well and the information can be shared with those providing
support. It specifies emergency care options, custodial restrictions, medical requirements/medications etc, school/daycare
contacts, children’s routines and needs etc. Copies of the Family Safety Plan can be downloaded from the Queensland Health
Website www. health.qld.gov.au, the Brisbane North Division of General Practice website www.bndgp.org.au or via the
COPMI website. You can also contact the KOPING Program Co-ordinator on 07 3355 8999.
