Characteristics of a Disciple of Christ

We have look so far at two characteristics of a follower of Jesus Christ. The first we look at was FAITH.
Hebrew 11:6 says: And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must
believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him. So the whole foundation of the
believers walk is based on faith.
Next we looked at Humility Jesus Said: Take My Yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and
humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls Matthew 11:29
Ephesians 4:2 Says: Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each
others faults because of your love.
So, now we look at LOVE. We will look at two areas of love:
LOVE for God.
LOVE for Others.
Deuteronomy 6:5 And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.
Deuteronomy 7:9 Understand, therefore, that the Lord your God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who
keeps his covenant for a thousand generations and lavishes his unfailing love on those who love him and obey
his commands.
Psalm 31:23 Love the Lord, all you godly ones! For the Lord protects those who are loyal to him, but he harshly
punishes the arrogant.
Psalm 73:25-26 Whom have I in heaven but you? I desire you more than anything on earth.
26
My health may
fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever.
Mark 12:29-33 Jesus replied, The most important commandment is this: Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is
the one and only Lord. 30 And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind,
and all your strength.[a] 31 The second is equally important: Love your neighbor as yourself.[b] No other
commandment is greater than these.
32 The teacher of religious law replied, Well said, Teacher. You have spoken the truth by saying that there is
only one God and no other. 33 And I know it is important to love him with all my heart and all my
understanding and all my strength, and to love my neighbor as myself. This is more important than to offer all
of the burnt offerings and sacrifices required in the law.
Footnotes:
[a] 12:29-30 Deuteronomy 6:4-5.
[b] 12:31 Leviticus 19:18.
Luke 11:42 What sorrow awaits you Pharisees! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your
herb gardens, but you ignore justice and the love of God. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more
important things.
Romans 5:5 And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he
has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.
1 Corinthians 8:3 But the person who loves God is the one whom God recognizes.
1 Corinthians 16:22 If anyone does not love the Lord, that person is cursed. Our Lord, come!
2 Thessalonians 3:5 May the Lord lead your hearts into a full understanding and expression of the love of God
and the patient endurance that comes from Christ.
2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
1 John 4:19-5:3 We love each other because he loved us first. 20 If someone says, I love God, but hates a
Christian brother or sister, that person is a liar; for if we dont love people we can see, how can we love God,
whom we cannot see? 21 And he has given us this command: Those who love God must also love their Christian
brothers and sisters.
Faith in the Son of God 5 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has become a child of God. And
everyone who loves the Father loves his children, too. 2 We know we love Gods children if we love God and
obey his commandments. 3 Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not
burdensome.
Here is the question: Do I really love God? Or maybe the question is this: Do I really know how to love
Him?
