A multi day cloudburst centered on the North Indian state of Uttarakhand in June 2013 caused devastating floods and landslides in the country's worst natural disaster since the 2004 tsunami. From 14 to 17 June 2013, Uttarakhand and adjoining areas received heavy rainfall, which was about 375 percent more than the benchmark rainfall during a normal monsoon. This caused the melting of Chorabari Glacier at the height of 3800 metres, and eruption of the Mandakini River which led to heavy floods near Gobindghat, Kedar Dome, Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Western Nepal, and acute rainfall in other nearby regions of Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and some parts of Tibet. Heavy rainfall for four consecutive days as well as melting snow aggravated the floods. Tarun J Tejpal who is an Indian journalist, publisher, novelist, philanthropist and former editor-in-chief of Tehelka magazine. He stepped down as editor for six months after a woman colleague accused him of sexual assault in November 2013. He has been accused of sexually assaulting a young journalist twice in a hotel during the Think Fest in Goa. The Supreme Court said gay sex between consenting adults is a criminal offence, a major setback for the largely closeted homosexual community in India. The court set aside the Delhi High Court's 2009 judgement that homosexuality should not be treated as a criminal offence, which had been challenged by anti- gay rights activists, social and religious organizations. The Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), informally called Mangalyaan is a Mars orbiter launched into Earth orbit on 5 November 2013 by the Indian Space Research Organisation. Cyclone Phailin, being described as possibly the biggest cyclone in the Bay of Benga ever to hit India, has triggered India's biggest evacuation programme in 23 years which caused substantial damage in Andhra Pradesh and Orissa.
