Montage
Description:
An entertaining montage made by the blending of two or
more images, and the use of typography.
Date:

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 02
Julie Peterson
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
Learn to manage Photoshop layers.
Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks.
Use flters.
Apply appropriate typography.
Process:
I cropped the background image to 810 and muted the
colors just a wee bit.
I selected the picture of the mushrooms frst to add a
splash of color. I created a mask blended them in around
the edges using black paint and a 40% opacity, soft-
edged brush to paint away the hard image edges.
I placed the picture of the fairy over the background
but realized the image was going to be too small so I
increased the size quite a bit. I soften the picture to hid
the pixels.
Next I lowered the opacity to 20% and blended in the
background behind the fairy.
Finally I added the text using Monotype Corsiva as the
font and adjusted the right edge to align with the tree.
A layer was added with a dark green drop shadow effect
to help make the text pop.

Adobe InDesign
Objectives:
Apply the design principles and use appropriate
typography.
Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic fier
layout.
Retrieve image and logo from links on this page.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign
document to keep links in InDesign intact.
Process:
I started with a few sketches. Normally I dont like
sketching but for some odd reason this time I did. I chose
the sketch that seemed to have the cleanest shape
map. Next, using Adobe InDesign, I created the basic
shape map, placed my image, text, and title. After a little
tweaking I had my rough draft which I presented to my
critique group in my COMM130 class. They gave me a
few suggestions which I really liked.
I spent a lot of time aligning everything in this fyer
and feel that the elbow of the man on the phone does
a nice job of pointing to the website to register for the
conference. I changed around my title quite a bit from
the original draft as well. I debated lining the body copy
up with the top of the image or lining it with the dark grey
outcrop from the wall in the image fnally deciding that
it created more interest to be as you now see it. The
image, logo, title and body copy were all provided by
BYU-I COMM130 for this fier.

A little hard work and a free lunch never hurt anyone so
Ive created a color full color fyer to invite the community
to come out and help beautify our neighborhood. It is a
full bleed event ad created with only Microsoft Word and
my personal scanner from home.

Program(s)/Tools:
Microsoft Word
Objectives:
Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work
together)
Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
Create a full-bleed design.
Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for
your message and audience.
Learn to use only Word design features without using
any Adobe programs, including Photoshop.
Process:
I located a picture from my Birds and Blooms magazine.
Using my home scanner scanned the image and used
Microsoft Word to sharpen the image and brighten it a
little bit. Because I use a PC I did not have the luxury
of an eyedropper tool so I selected colors with my own
eye as the judge for the boxes and text. Finally, I created
a fower using the shapes available in Word. The fonts
complement each other as one has serifs and the
other is sans-serif. I used some color in the text for the
two most important details (title and date, time, place)
and used color boxes to unify the body text. I am quite
pleased with the results considering the program and
hardware I had to work with. Programs I used: Microsoft
Word, Epson Scanner, Adobe PDF converter.

Personal Camera (Cannon) and Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
Learn basic photography skills.
Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those
colors, then incorporate the colors into the layout.
Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen
tool on separate layers for NDE (non-destructive editing.)
Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.511 page
layout.
Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic
elements in Photoshop.
Print with full-bleed margins. Trim only 1/8 (0.125) from
all four sides.
Process:
I started with a picture that I took for the photo activity
that I thought had a good color scheme. Later I realized
that I was going to have a challenge working with this
color scheme. However, I felt like this picture had strong
contrast, good focus, and good composition. I shot this
with my Cannon. Within Photoshop I did a little tweaking
with the levels, sharpness, saturation, vibrancy, and color
balance. I also painted over the edges to create a softer
edge for the picture. I then continued with Photoshop
to create the background colors as well as the text,
repeating elements, and color scheme. I incorporate my
color scheme title, color swatches, and color names into
my design.

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Objectives:
Create three completely different, original logos to ft
a company or personal image that will appeal to the
audience. Do not imitate existing logos or use previous
designs.
Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your
logos.
Process:
For my frst logo I used the shape tool to create the
yellow lines. I used the pen tool to trace a bracket then
created a mirror image of it for the second bracket then
joined them. I used a brush to create the line with the
dots. Finally, I added the text.
The second logo was created with just the shape tool
and text.
The third logo was simple text with the added
embellishment of a quill pen which was created using a
brush tool.
Brochure
Description:
A two sided (duplex) folding brochure.

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign/Adobe Illustrator/Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.
Incorporate quality images. (Incorporate at least four
quality images (Not including the logo). One should be
clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so
the text follows the cutout shape of the image.
Write at least 250 words of original copy with at least
three paragraphs, headers, and subheaders.
Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.
Process:
I set up the modern fold in Adobe InDesign. I split my
layout into two sections with the concept that the images
on the right inside edge would show when the front cover
was folded into place.
I used red, yellow, and blue from the logo in square
boxes throughout the piece to create create repetition
and fow. The four images on the right side were chosen
to highlight the four areas of services the company
provides. I added text on a few of them to help highlight
what they represented. I also cropped them in Adobe
Illustrator which is what I also used to add the text.
Remember those old label machines? I tried to duplicate
that look in the descriptions next to each photo. I did this
in Adobe Illustrator using black boxes and a free font
resembling a typewriter.
For the image of the calligraphy pen
I used the quick selection tool in
Adobe Photoshop to remove part of the
background of the image. I then used
the refne mask dialogue box to smooth,
feather, shift edge and apply contrast to
the outline of the pen. I then placed the
pen image into InDesign where I used the
text wrap option to wrap my text around
the alpha channel of the image.
I created the logo in Illustrator using the
text and shape tools and then I placed it
into InDesign.
Letterhead

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator & InDesign
Objectives:
Create a new logo to ft a company or personal image.
Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a
business card and letterhead.
Apply typography rules, keeping small copy.
Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop
shadows and plenty of white space.
Process:
I created the logo using the Type Tool and Shape
Tool in Adobe Illustrator. I used the Pathfnder Tool to
create the layered effect between the N and H and the
negative space as well. I then imported my .AI fles
into a new document in Adobe InDesign. I created a
second document in Adobe InDesign and placed the
front and back of my business card in a larger scale to
show the detail.
My frst page is my letterhead. To create my letterhead
I used the Type Tool to write out my name and contact
information. I then used the Rotate Tool to change the
text from horizontal to vertical. I used the line tool to
create the vertical line along the side of the letterhead
to create interest as well as to separate future body
copy from the text of the letterhead. I then inserted my
logo into the bottom right corner and added the URL to
my website. The contact information and website are
all set at 50% opacity.
I left at .5 inch margin around the entire
page. The font is Baskerville MT Pro. The
font size of my name is 36 point and for
the contact information it is 9 point.
On my second page I used the rectangle
tool to create the front and back outline
of my business card. My name is in 22
point and the contact information is in 9
point and the website is in 10 point. The
website is a bit larger because that is the
main purpose of sharing my business
card, so they will visit my website for
more information. For the back of the
business card I encourage them to write
any applicable notes and include a larger
version of my logo for unity.

Notepad++ and Firefox color fnder.
Objectives:
Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web
page so the long side is 300 500 pixels.
Write content to describe the process of creating your
logo and how it appeals to a target audience. (Minimum
of 200 words. Include rationale for colors, appeal to
target audience, design skills, etc,).
Design a web page using HTML to display the logo and
content.
Process:
I created this web page using only Notepad++. I enjoyed
using the skills I already have with HTML and CSS and it
was interesting to be able to help and learn fro mothers.
After I marked up all my content and inserted my image, I
attached a pre-made CSS document to my HTML.
I then used the colors from my logo as the colors for my
web page. I found these colors by using the color fnder
tool in Firefox.
I also changed my fonts to Times New Roman and
Verdana. I declared some backup fonts just in case the
viewers browser didnt have these fonts. I also used
padding around the logo and text so that they would not
be too close to the edge of the web page.
