the system "snaps" to points within the distance you have specified
(= snap radius), even if the center of the crosshairs is not placed
directly over the point.

Allplans Data Structure
A project is an organizational unit. A new project is created for each
construction project in Allplan. A project consists of the following
elements:
Drawing files
Drawing files are the equivalent of the transparencies used in
conventional building design. The actual design and data creation
process happens in drawing files. You can show or hide
individual drawing files.

Example: The axis grid and the various floor plans of the stories
in a building are drawn on separate drawing files so that you can
superimpose the drawing files as required, thus showing or hiding
the floor plans and the axis grid independently from one another.
Filesets:
A fileset is a convenient way of grouping together a series of
drawing files for example, the drawing files of a construction
stage.
Layouts:
Drawing elements and assembling layouts are separate operations
in Allplan. As opposed to design using a conventional drafting
board, the scope of the layout does not have to be defined in
advance. Generally, you leave the layout (which involves
arranging and laying out drawing files and/or filesets) until
youre finished with the design. Layouts are set up based on
filesets and/or single drawing files.

Understanding layers
Layers provide an additional means of applying a structure - within
drawing files. Metaphorically speaking, a layer is a transparency on
which design elements belonging to a specific category (load-bearing
walls, non-bearing walls) are drawn. Layers can be set so that they
are visible or hidden.
The use of layers obviates the need for frequent switching between
drawing files and they ensure that associative elements - such as
wall dimensions or sill elevation labels - reside in the same drawing
file and yet can still be hidden from view.
Allplan provides a very extensive layer structure called
ARCHITECTURE. This layer structure is designed to meet a broad
range of requirements. In addition, you can customize it for your
needs. When you activate a tool, the corresponding layer is assigned
automatically. But you can also select the active layer manually.
Layers come with various predefined format properties (linetype
etc.). To configure the system to apply these properties automatically
to the entire project, do the following.

Task 2: Exterior Walls

Introduction
In Allplan, creating walls is as easy as drawing lines. But as opposed
to lines, walls contain a wide range of additional information like
material and dimensions. The same is true for all other architectural
components (e.g. columns, windows, chimneys etc.).
This way, you can quickly perform exact quantity takeoff operations
and draw up accurate estimates as to the cost of the planned
building. The results can be transferred to a tendering, ordering and
billing program.
Tip: You can save frequently
used settings or values for
elements and components in
favorite files.
Detailed information is
provided in Allplans online
Help; see the section entitled
Favorite Files.

You can set the properties for components in special, componentspecific dialog boxes before you draw a component, while you are
doing this or after you have created it. The process of creating a
legend including all the intended wall and component types and
saving it as a special file, known as Wizard, has proven to be
useful in practice.
The Wizard is a small viewport with a legend including all the
functions frequently used. Simply click an element with the right
mouse button to open the shortcut menu which contains similar or
related functions.

Task 5: Height Setup and Component

Heights
Introduction
Every drawing file has a pair of invisible, default reference planes.
Think of the default reference planes as two horizontal planes (one
upper plane and one lower plane) that stretch to infinity.
By default, the elevation of these default reference planes is set as
follows:
Lower reference plane: 0.000 m
Upper reference plane: 2.500 m
Fehler! Es ist nicht mglich, durch die Bearbeitung von
Feldfunktionen Objekte zu erstellen.
You can define the height of architectural elements by entering
values for the top and bottom levels relative to these default
reference planes. The height of all the architectural elements which
are set relative to these planes can be modified in an easy and
comfortable manner: all you need to do is change the elevation of
the default reference planes and all the components associated with
them will be updated automatically.
The advantage of this method is that all architectural elements can
be lengthened or shortened in a single operation by changing the
elevation of the planes. For example, if you wish to change the story
height, you do not need to modify the height of every individual
component. Rather, change the height of the planes in the drawing
files containing the components of the story whose height you wish
to change.
You can define the height of the default reference planes by using
Default Planes function in the Architecture flyout.
the
You can set up the height of an architectural element relative to the
default reference planes when you enter the element. Of course, you
can also modify these settings at a later stage. You can define the top

the default reference planes or you can also enter an offset between

Exercise 2: Rooms and

Groups of Rooms
Before you can perform area and floor space calculations, you have
to define rooms in the CAD program.
Two methods are provided for creating rooms:
Room by room: in this case the boundary of each room is entered
as a polyline. The rooms can be labeled immediately and assigned
finish specifications.
Here, we will use this method to create the rooms in the first
floor.
Automatic room generation: in this case, the rooms are "fitted"
within closed wall polylines. The rooms can only be labeled and
assigned finish specifications later.
Based on this method, we will create the rooms for the top floor
in one of the exercises that follow.
The Group Rooms tool lets you combine individual rooms into
groups. For example, you might combine all the rooms belonging to
an apartment. The individual groups can be assigned different
hatching styles, patterns or fills as a means of identification.

A note on creating your own intelligent title block

Allplan provides a wide range of intelligent title blocks based on
label styles. Label styles contain design entities, text and, provided
they have been assigned, attributes. All of these are saved together.
The advantage of a title block with attributes is that the text will
update whenever the layout is opened.
You can define your own, custom label styles.
Project attributes can only be used if you have also purchased and
installed a license for the workgroup manager with the plan
manager.

To select and assign attributes

1 On the File menu, click Open Project.
2 In the Select Projects dialog box, click Select Attributes.
3 Select the following attributes:
Client
Location/plot
City, street
Architect

label the attributes by clicking in the column on the right and
then entering text.

7 Press OK to confirm all the dialog boxes.

for the title block you created at the beginning of this seminar.

Exercise 2: Project Backup

Data backup is a much discussed topic in the IT industry. It is a topic
you cannot afford to ignore. Not only hardware failure, but also user
error can cause valuable data to be lost irrevocably. An efficient
backup strategy will reduce the risk of data loss to a minimum and
cover your archival needs at the same time.
Important: Back up your projects regularly!
