Fundamentals Of DC Operation And
Repair Tips

Fundamentals of DC Operation and Repair Tips is available in printed and CD-ROM

versions. EASA service centers should make this resource available to supervisors,
mechanics, winders, salespeople and field service technicians. It will benefit anyone
involved in the repair of DC motors and generators. The publication covers DC machine
theory without complex mathematical formulas. It also covers operation as well as repair
procedures and tips that have been collected over a number of years. As a result, readers will benefit from the knowledge gathered by others with long careers in DC repair.
It could take a decade or longer for someone to become really proficient and knowledgeable in this area. The material begins with DC theory and then follows the logical
progression of a DC machine through a service center. Initial chapters cover disassembly,
inspection and testing. Subsequent chapters are organized around the main parts of a DC
machine, such as armature and frame. Additional chapters cover assembly, final testing
and application issues. Those sections that focus on the components explain how those
parts work and how they can best be repaired.

Every EASA service center should have a copy for quick reference. Others who
will want a copy include anyone interested in understanding motor failures and
those who want to serve customers by addressing the cause of failure rather
than the symptom. The publication was developed to help electric motor technicians and engineers prevent repeated failures by determining the root cause of
the problem. With more than 270 pages, the book provides extensive information, including photos of a wide range of failures, the likely causes listed, and a
clear methodology for confirming the probable cause of each failure. The printed manual is in black-and-white, while the CD version shows most of the failure
photos in color. If you must choose between one or the other, we encourage you
to purchase the CD and then print pages as necessary. This is an excellent tool to
demonstrate to your customers the likely cause(s) of failure.

CONCENTRIC-TO-LAP / LAP-TO-CONCENTRIC
CONVERSIONS
By Chuck Yung
Senior Technical Support Specialist
EASA

INTRODUCTION
Concentric windings are used by most motor manufacturers to facilitate machine-insertion of windings and reduce
production costs. Windings designed for 4 or more poles
can usually be converted to an equivalent lap winding to
improve performance, including efficiency.
Two-pole motors, when lap wound, must be short-pitched
for reasons of practicality. The narrower the coil pitch, the
more actual turns are required to achieve the correct number of effective turns. In many cases a 2-pole concentric
winding cannot be converted to an equivalent lap winding
without reducing conductor area. Those windings should be
duplicated to avoid degrading the efficiency of the motor.
Some end-users also require their motors to be rewound
in like kindwith no changes to the original design.
When a winding must be rewound concentric, the layerinsertion method may be confusing to winders accustomed
to the symmetry of the lap winding. This document is intended to help in those cases where a concentric winding
must be used.

describes the slots occupied by the coil. If the sides of a coil

lie in slots 1 and 11, the coil spans 10 teeth, but its pitch is
1-11. Using the wrong coil pitch will change the chord factor (one of the variables that determines the effectiveness
of each turn in a coil). A larger chord factor reduces motor
torque; a smaller chord factor increases magnetic flux densities. (More information about chord factor is provided later.)

CONCENTRIC WINDING BASICS

EASAs Tech Note 12 and the EASA Verification and
Redesign program are useful when redesigning from concentric to lap windings. TN 12 can also be used (in reverse)
to redesign from lap to a concentric winding. The breadth
of concentric winding schemes is apparent from TN 12.
Despite the large variety of pitches and turn ratios, certain
basic rules apply to all (see Figure 2).

Tech Notes

Tech Notes cover a variety of technical subjects in great detail. Tech Notes make excellent
handouts to supplement your in-house training program, as well as handy references for
your foreman and other service center employees. (Note that Tech Notes are also available

Coil pitch and span

Before going further, it is important to note that the terms

coil pitch and coil span are often used interchangeably
and incorrectly. Coil span describes the number of teeth
enclosed, or spanned, by the coil (see Figure 1). Coil pitch

Engineering Forms
AC Stator Form Coil Data Sheet

Avoid costly mistakes, missing or incorrect data, and communication problems

when making or ordering new form coils. Begin using EASAs AC Stator Form
Coil Data Sheet. This form can be used as a universal replacement for those used
by the various coil manufacturers. It also assists technicians in recording all the
information needed to produce exact duplicates of the original coils. Its logically arranged, too. One of the best things about using the AC Stator Form Coil
Data Sheet is that after you buy one pad (100 sheets to pad), EASA will send you
a free replacement pad for each 100 completed data forms you contribute to
EASAs data bank.

Stator Core Test Forms

EASAs Stator Core Test Form allows you to record core test data for your own
records and to contribute this data to EASA Headquarters files. As with EASAs
other free data card programs, you first purchase an order of Stator Core Test
Forms, which come padded in two-part sets, complete with carbon paper. As you
perform core tests, record the data, keeping one copy and sending the other to
EASA Headquarters. When youve completed 40 forms, return them to EASA.
EASA then records your submissions, and each time you send in a total of 40 test
forms, EASA sends you a fresh supply of two-part forms free of charge.

Warranty Report Forms

EASAs Warranty Report Forms provide the ideal way to record your warranty
service accurately. Many manufacturers request that warranty work be documented on this form. EASAs warranty forms come in pads of 100. Members
may also download a warranty report form template from the Members Only
section of EASAs Web site.

Actual size of forms above: 8.5 x 11

Winding Data Forms

With EASAs Winding Data Forms, you can record important winding data for
your records while contributing valuable information to EASAs winding data
file. You buy an order of data cards (single-phase AC, polyphase AC or DC),
which come padded in two-part sets. As jobs come in for repair, you record the
data as usual, keeping one copy and sending the other to EASAs rewind data
file. When your facility has filled out 600 single-phase or polyphase cards, or
40 DC data sheets, return the copies to EASA. EASA then records your submissions, and each time you reach a total of 600 single-phase or polyphase cards, or
40 DC data sheets, EASA will send you a fresh supply of the appropriate type
free of charge.

The Perfect Sales Call

Joe Ellers, Director of Palmetto Associates in Clemson, South Carolina, teamed up

with the Association Education Alliance (AEA) and EASA to produce The Perfect
Sales Call. The presentation is appropriate for inside and outside sales; the principles apply whether your focus is on products or services. The training consists of a
DVD and CD-ROM. The CD contains a leader guide for sales managers and a participant
guide for salespeople. You can print as many copies as you need from the CD. Your salespeople will get a checklist to use when theyre selling. Of all the sales training programs
on the market, very few of them focus on the most critical element: the sales call itself.
Too many programs today feature blue sky solutions that have never been applied in
the service distribution industry. This program not only tells your people what to do it
shows them how to do it so they can apply what they learn right away.

Quality Assurance And Environmental

EASA-Q:2000 Quality Manual

The EASA-Q:2000 Quality Manual is a guideline for implementing the ISO 9000 series of
quality system standards. Whether you are implementing a quality system for the first time
or upgrading ISO 9000:1994 or EASA-Q:1994, EASA-Q: 2000 will be invaluable to you. The
package consists of a printed manual and CD-ROM which can be used to customize your
program. (Note that EASA-Q is based on ISO 9001-2000 and not ISO 9001-2008.)

Hazard Communication Manual

This indispensable manual was developed to help EASA service centers navigate the
difficult terrain of the U.S. Federal OSHA Hazard Communication Standard. More
specifically, it will help you collect and file Material Safety Data Sheets, train your
employees, and document your training as required. Included are a summary of the
OSHA Hazard Communication Standard, a compliance checklist, a suggested hazard
communication program, hints on how to develop a written training program, and a
primer on how to read Material Safety Data Sheets. The manual also contains a glossary and samples of various OSHA forms and letters. Note: This product is available in
print or on a CD-ROM.

Waste Minimization Program

In many areas, government officials are trying to minimize the creation of waste rather
than just trying to find ways of getting rid of it. With this in mind and because eliminating waste makes good business sense EASA developed the Waste Minimization
Program. This booklet outlines the reasons to minimize waste and the steps you can take
to implement a waste minimization program, including making a waste minimization
assessment of your workplace.
