Sharing heritage
Once again Siksika First Nation had Tipis set up at the Calgary Stampede to help share some of the history and culture with stampede goers. Singers from
Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park sang for the nightly dancing, which featured chicken dancers, fancy dancers and traditional dancers from each of the
Treaty 7 First Nations communities.

In his 24 years of service,

I am involved in the community in regards to what

There are a lot of community events that are attended

PORTABLE ISLANDS
The first phase of the Downtown revitalization strategy is well underway. Two
portable islands have been constructed and installed along Second Avenue as
a pilot project. The islands will be removed for the winter season to facilitate
snow removal.
In the future, the islands will be capable of being moved to different locations
in the Downtown Central Zone of the Overlay Bylaw, and will be wheelchair
accessible. For this year, the islands will remain in the current locations for the
entire summer and fall season. This will give the Downtown Design Review
Committee the ability to monitor the pilot project for any issues that need to be
resolved prior to installation next spring.
When the Downtown Design Review Committee selected the locations for the
Portable Islands, it was determined that Second Avenue is currently the most
walkable part of the downtown. The Portable Islands are for sitting, meeting
people and possible enjoying a coffee or lunch, and therefore it was considered
appropriate to locate the islands near eating and drinking establishments. The
island on the north side of Second Avenue is adjacent to a bakery that serves
light lunches and beverages. While there are eating and drinking establishments on the south side of Second Avenue between Lakeside and Second
Street, the Heritage Square currently provides a lovely sitting area, as well
as the green space between the Credit Union and the Theatre on the north
side. The location on Second Avenue between Second and Third Street was
selected due to its proximity to the Co-op, which has a deli, and people could
purchase lunches or beverages and sit on the Portable Island. Sunny locations
were selected to ensure that the islands get the most sun over the May to
October period. In addition, it was determined that since parking stalls would
be eliminated to accommodate the patios, locations that had significant on or
off street parking would be the best options.
This is the first year for the Portable Islands. As previously mentioned, they are
portable and may be sited in different locations next year. It is hoped that the
islands get a lot of use and are enjoyed by all.
We are also looking for feedback and suggestions for improvement from the
public. We are hoping to continuously improve and revitalize the entire Downtown area over the next few years!

A mayors life
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
Theatre, vacationing and being a
family man, all fit the criteria of what
Mayor Michael Ell considers to be his
lifestyle when hes not running politics
in Strathmore.
With Strathmore being a popular railway hub at one point in time, the mayor had an historical interest in how the
community was developed.
In 1977, the CPR (Canadian Pacific
Railway) abandoned the rail line and
the signing for Strathmore, said Ell.
The railway was the start to building
the town because that was the main
transportation.
The CPR had an experimental farm
(by the Canadian Tire, Orchard Park)
where they raised livestock, poultry,
and grew fruit and vegetables to feed
the passengers on the train, said Ell.
The mayor had a varied career before
he was elected in October 2013.
I graduated from high school almost
50 years ago and I have lived in Strathmore since 1977,said Ell.
He was born in High River and spent
some time in Calgary and Regina working for Marathon Realty.
My responsibility was to process
the pay of all the real estate taxes from
Northern Ontario to just inside the B.C.
border for the CPR Rail, said Ell.
After his tenure with Marathon Realty, Ell was heavily involved in finance
until he retired.
I did commercial credit and consumer credit. I was a branch manager for a
credit union, and also have done insurance investigation, and worked for the
federal government, said Ell.
He also has a keen interest in theatre. Ell was, and still is, very enthused
about being involved with the performances that go on and helping in any
way he can.
I have been involved with Strathmore Theatre Players since 1987, and
when necessary, I have worked behind
the scenes, worked on the stage and I
have enjoyed every moment of it, said
Ell. Artists in general, whether it is
singing or making a plate, pottery
we have very talented people in this
town, which goes unnoticed. We have
to find a way to bring that talent out
and let them show it.
Ells theatre career was jumpstarted
when a boss of his let him go.
In 1987 my boss walked in and said
you are fired and I walked down to
Marleen (Fedoruks) house and walked
and asked her if she was wanting help
with the Strathmore Theatre Players
and she said yes, he said.
Ell thoroughly enjoys acting. One
play that was his personal favorite was
Dont Feed the Ducks.
Travelling is something that Ell and
his wife have taken a keen interest in.
From January to October we enjoyed being retired as weve been on a

cruise down the Mexican coast, two Caribbean cruises, on the Mayan Riviera
three times and Hawaii, said Ell.
The one trip that was very memorable for Ell was Tahiti, where they got to
stay in straw-covered bungalows over
the water.
We had the best over the water bungalow, you have to walk over a wooden
walkway that takes you over and had a
glass plate to watch the fish.
Ell hopes to do that trip again someday, but for now he is actively involved
in Strathmore being the most progressive town it can be.

It seems that tablet devices like the iPad are being
introduced to children at earlier ages all the time.
Experts believe this can be a good thing for children
even those younger than two years old and as long
as the toddlers spend no more than a half hour daily
with the device.
Mayor Michael Ell is hoping to build on the foundation of what the town has already developed
and likes to hear from citizens about what can be
improved upon.

At times there can be a bit of stigma with kids
about being classed as being in daycare once they
get a bit older. NEXT, a division of Strathmore Kids
caters to older kids and only for before and after
school care.
We were finding that kids once they get to that
Grade 3 level, they dont want to be in daycare
anymore, but the problem is we have parents that
commute so for those three hours after school
they dont have anywhere to go so my mom wanted to create an environment where they do want
to still come, said Courtney Beekman, with the
NEXT program.
After Grade 3 Beekman said you can begin to
see a big drop off in daycares that go up to 12
years, with most stopping around ages 9-10.
Its a stigma. So when Paula (Beekman) and I
sort of dreamt up the big vision about how to do
this, (we noticed) there is a drop off and there is
a stigma with kids, said Monica Soltys, Executive
Director for NEXT.
NEXT kind of takes the daycare out of it, said
Soltys, thats what the program plan was all about,
expand, explore, and excel with NEXT.

Gearheads returns
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter
The fourth annual Gearheads custom and classic car/
truck show at High Eagle RV Resort in Rosebud is on July
20.
The show began when a client mentioned a car show
he had been at in Lethbridge to Ed Sonmor of High Eagle
RV Resort. The guy said it was to hot and even with all the
nice cars he couldnt enjoy the show because of the heat
from the sun and the pavement, but hinted to Sonmor that
it would be nice if there could be a show in a place like
the RV resorts.
I thought why not because our clients do call High Eagle
the emeralds of the Badlands because were so green and
cozy in here. It took off from there and we just kind of
grabbed that ball and ran with it and formed the Gearheads
Car Club over here and got a band and got some food
people in and of course got a hold of the car people and
its been doing great ever since, said Sonmor.
The venue size is little restricted, but can fit 80-105 cars
and trucks. Sonmor said he prefers if people pre-register so
he can get an idea of how many vehicles may be showing
up.
The show also features live music with the Cat Country Cougar Hunters performing. There will also be a 50/50
draw, door prizes, ice cream and other food.
We kind of have the lawn chair concert in the park along
with the car show, said Sonmor.
Its just a nice Sunday afternoon, meet some new friends
and do a little bench racing and see what kind of modifications some guys make - all that kind of stuff.
The show will go on no matter the weather.
I aint cancelling nothing, the band plays on, if nobody
shows up then Ill dance to it myself, said Sonmor laughing.
Vehicle registration is at noon on July 20 and the show is
open to the public from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Photos and more
information can be found online at www.higheaglervpark.

My dog Buddy loves going for
a walk. It doesnt matter where,
as long as he gets to go or a
walk. If we dont take him out
for a while, hell come and
whine, and then bark, until we
get the point and actually take
him out. If you have a dog, you
know what Im talking about. In
town we usually have him on
a leash, so its nice when we
can get out of town to let him
run free.
The other day we were down
by the Bow River, walking along
the canals. As we came back
to the van, I glanced up at the
bridge behind it. My attention
was first drawn to the many
mud bird nests tucked under a
ledge on the bridge, but then
it was quickly diverted to the
usual graffiti.
Some of the most beautiful
graffiti is hard to read, but I was
drawn to a phrase that was
just scrawled on the bridge in
black spray paint. It said No
Regreats. It was crossed out
and then corrected above:
Regrets.
I dont know if that was
supposed to be funny, or if the

Getting to know
Strathmores
newest pastor
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
Sally Carlson was raised in her home state of Minnesota, not knowing she was going to become a pastor of a
church, especially considering her family has a teaching
background. Her life decision was altered when she came
to Canada and settled in Strathmore.
I actually first came into Canada, to Strathmore, to attend
a school called Covenant Bible College. Its associated with
our denomination and lots of students would come up here
to go to school, said Carlson.
Strathmore is the first place I lived in Canada and it was
small when I came in the late 90s and not a lot here, said
Carlson. She came back in 2001 to work at the Bible College
and stayed again until 2004.
When I finished working there I returned back to the
States for a while and worked and lived in Chicago. I decided to go to a seminary to become a pastor, said Carlson.
Before that Carlson was already working at Ministries
with college students. When she started seminary, Carlson
met her husband Dan who is also a pastor.
He had his first call to a church in Saskatchewan so that
is why I came back to Canada, said Carlson.
When I finished seminary we pastored together at our
church in Saskatchewan. We were there for four years, said
Carlson.
Upon arrival back in Strathmore she landed a job at the
Hope Community Covenant Church.
My focus here is kids, teens, students and missions and
Im hoping to help our church connect with kids in Strathmore and its growing community, said Carlson.
What she hopes to accomplish with Hope Church is to
educate people and express how God is always watching,
and reminding people that the church is a good place to go
knowing he is there for you.
Part of the education process in the town will be to create
a program to get that message out, while informing people
more about the church itself.
New to the church grounds this year is the community
garden, created by Communities in Bloom.
The community garden is looking for ways to help kids
and students get connected and helping them learn where
their food came from, what does it look like to eat healthy,
said Carlson.
As Carlson gains more experience, she knows the relationship with church-goers will get stronger. She also feels
as people get to know her better it will draw more kids to
the church as things are happening, she hopes to be a resource for them.
Carlson has a unique situation in her family as she as she
has a twin brother and two younger twin brothers.
She also has a passion for travelling and having a concern
for events that happened worldwide and to offer assistance.
I also have a passion for missions and things happening abroad and experiencing different cultures, said Carlson. She is a well-rounded traveller, which has taken her to
places like Mexico, Haiti, Ecuador, China, Egypt, Israel and
the West Bank.

Strathmore singer and songwriter
Kirstyn Johnson took to the stage recently as part of the Calgary Stampede
Talent Search Competition. The competition started out with more than 60
participants, which were whittled down
to 24 who competed in the semi-finals,
and then was broken down to finals.
Johnson, who was in the final three
of the MuchMusic and Coca Cola Covers Competition last year, made it into
the finals at the Calgary Stampede singing a song made famous by Janis Joplin.
I sang Me and Bobby McGee. I did
a piano rendition with the band where
I started by myself and then the band
kicked in and I ended up actually getting off of the piano and going and
singing in front of the band, said Johnson.
Johnson didnt know when she sang
it for her audition that she would have
to stick to the same song. She said obviously it was a good choice, since she
did make it to finals, but she had to

Voting for
a new image
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter
Albertans are being asked to cast
their vote in order to help choose the
new license plate design for the province. Three designs were unveiled on
July 8, awaiting approval.
Of the three, on July 15, version one
was sitting at 45.05 per cent of the
votes, version two at 48.97 per cent,
and version three only had six per cent
of the votes.
Alberta is the best place to live,
work and raise a family; and, these
three designs are all inspired by the
pride Albertans have in their home.
The natural beauty of our province is
on display in all three designs. I know
Albertans will enjoy having a say on
what their new provincial licence plate
will look like, said Premier Dave Hancock in a press release.
The new plate, once chosen, will be
available in the spring of 2015. The
plate will feature the new logo, the Alberta governments website Alberta.ca,
and will have a reflective coating making it easier to see in low light condition, and easier for infrared equipment
to read. The veterans plate will remain
the same, which had been a concern
for some.
Our current licence plate is more
than 30 years old, and lacks feature to
help make out roads and communities safer. This new plate will make it
easier for police to spot vehicles that
are unregistered, uninsured, or stolen,
said Minister of Service Doug Griffiths
in a press release.
Albertans will see an increase of $5
when renewing their vehicle registration. The additional cost is to help cover the production costs and implementation of the new plates. New plates
will be given when people renew
their registration, or can be purchased
ahead of the regular renewal time for
a fee.
To cast your vote go to http://alberta.ca/licence-plate-survey.cfm. There
you will also be able to keep track of
the results as votes come in.

Rosebud Theatre
hits the road for
Heritage Park
LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor
Rosebud Theatre and Heritage Park have teamed up to produce Nellies Controversial Premier, a half-hour play celebrating the work of the Famous Five, Canadian women who, a
century ago, fought for womens right to vote, hold office,
own property and legally be considered persons.
Here, there is mockery, wit, and an outrageous public
scene ... punctuated with some cheeky song and dance, emailed Natalie Gauthier, who plays Nellie McClung, one of
the Famous Five.
Come and witness the events that led to Nellie McClungs
famous Mock Parliament speech, said Adam Furfaro, Rosebud Centre of the Arts Executive Director, in an e-mail. Witness (Manitoba) Premier Rodmond Roblin wither under the
pointed wit of one of the Famous Five women who championed the Womens Suffrage Movement.
Gauthier, a graduate of Rosebud School of the Arts (RSA),
plays alongside fellow grads Kendra Hutchinson and Mike
Thiessen, and Alysa Glen, fourth-year RSA student. Paul Muir,

The Strathmore Regional Arts Collective (SRAC) officially kicked off their
logo contest during the first annual
arts and sounds in the park festival last
September. After shifting through the
submissions the decision was made to
use Lynn Days logo. Day was awarded
with two tickets to Rosebud Theatre for
creating the winning design.
I was trying to get sort of a little
bit about all of the things that SRAC
is going to be covering, its not going
to be just two dimensional art, theres
also potters, dancers, musicians. I tried
to get a little bit of everything covered,
said Day.

Strathmores Scott Schiffner has to
be feeling pretty surreal right now
after his performance at the Calgary
Stampede.
After all, his performance earned
him $100,000 for winning the 2014
version of the bull riding at the Calgary Stampede on July 13.
This capped off what was a very
successful week for Schiffner, who
earned a berth in the Showdown
Sunday by taking a Top 4 spot in

Rockyford Rodeo
returns
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
The Rockyford Rodeo is fast approaching,
commencing on the weekend of July 25-27. The
free pancake breakfast will kick off the festivities at 7 a.m. on Saturday, July 26 followed by
the parade at 10 a.m. and then the big event of
the weekend, the rodeo, getting started at 12:30
p.m.
In the evening, there will be a barbeque beef
dinner being served on both Saturday, with
prime Alberta beef being served, and then on
Sunday with beef on a bun, both beginning at
5 p.m.
The newest addition to the rodeo this year
will leave the fans in amazement.
We are bringing in McMorran and FMX Stunt
Bikes, basically freestyle motocross, said Justin
Geeraert, who is a part of the Rockyford Lions
Rodeo organizing committee.
There will be no shortage of events, making
for an exciting three days at the Rockyford Rodeo grounds.
We got the rodeo all three days, chuckwagons all three nights at 6:30 p.m., basically all the
same events as last year but the motocross will
be something to look out for, said Geeraert.
Like many other small town rodeos in Alberta
participants look forward to not only the midway, but also the main event in the rodeo as it
attracts more people to town.
The Rockyford Rodeo is a great thing for the
community and brings people from all over Alberta, Canada and the odd time gets some international people coming over and something to
look forward to every year, said Geeraert.
Once people get inside the gates they should
be prepared to see skilled riders try to hold on
to crazy horses and bulls.
Saddle bronco, bareback, calf roping, steer
wrestling and many more events will be happening. All rodeo participants are competing for
money, as with other rodeos, but there will also
be extra money available to the winners.
Well the SCA (Sheridan Cowboys Association) put out their entry fee, and then we add
on $1,500 per event, said Geeraert.
The Rockyford Rodeo will provide some excitement as the younger rodeo contestants will
want to perform and excite the crowd.
Rockyford is one of those big, small town
rodeos and one of the top rodeos in Alberta,
said Geeraert.
Geeraert guaranteed that If youre looking
for something to do on July 25-27 come out to
Rockyford, you will not be disappointed.

were the opposition for the big final. Again, the girls showed
unbelievable grit and what is needed to win. In the final the
Thunder rallied from three runs down with timely hits and
catches to become provincial champions by a 14-13 score.
The key to success for the team was using what they
learned in practice and what the coaches were trying to
implement strategy.
I think the progressive practice in what were doing (in
practice) knowing what skills that we needed (in developing) a practice plan, said Lane.
It was a true team effort of girls supporting each other
and individuals coming through at clutch times that secured
wins all weekend.
It was not individual efforts per se, like I say there was
not anyone that stood out for the weekend, if one girl was
struggling, then the rest were kicking in with timely plays
and catches, it was definitely a team effort, said Lane.
Coaches, parents and fans were left on the edge of their
seats throughout the entire weekend. The U12 Thunder
championship roster consisted off: Darian Breaker, Emma
Goldade, Isabella McIntyre, Alex Mackey, Natalie Funk,
Alexis Appleyard, Paige McEachern, Justine Larson, Annabelle MacInnis, Shelby Lane and Ainsley Olson.

If you like a change in physical activity during the summer
months then why not come down to Jumphouse Gymnastics
for something new. There is a competitive cheerleading division for ages 6-18, and a recreational division that starts at the
age of 4.
Both divisions give the kids a chance to experience something creative with the focus on combining dance at a more
competitive level or as just a fun sport to get involved in during the summer.
It basically started at a recreational level (seven years ago)
and it is growing hugely in (Alberta) but definitely in Southern Alberta, said Cassi Weiss, who is the Matrix coach.
There are some different and very unique cheerleading
techniques that people might not understand, but after viewing it for a while will get a grasp on the dances.
There are different aspects of cheer, stunting with lifting
people, jumps, tumbling and dance so it is a good mix of
gymnastics and dance, said Weiss.
Cheerleading may be seen by many as a sport meant to be
sideline entertainment at football or basketball games, however, this is a misconception as not only the Matrix program
but many other cheer programs are considered to be all-star
teams.
Cheer as a sport, which is also called All-Star cheerleading
(the Matrix) do not actually cheer for a team (or individuals),
said Weiss. They actually learn a two minute and 30 second
routine and they go to competitions, it is a full-on team sport.
As for Weiss, she is has only been the head coach for three
years and before that was an assistant.
It is a great sport for every skill level and body type and
it is definitely something that kids can do in their older years
(from gymnastics to junior high) it is really good for that age
to stay active, said Weiss.
The competition is staged nationally and worldwide, and
there are discussions on-going for it to become an Olympic
sport.
This year we are hoping to have two teams, we have about
25 (cheerleaders) that are training over the summer and then
we will hold open try-outs in September.
Tryouts will be held at the Jumphouse Gymnastics club on
Sept. 10 from 6 p.m.-8p.m. and spots will fill up fast so give
them a call at 403-934-4900 to reserve a slot.
