Achieving Coherence in Writing

Coherence is a compounding of many components that lead to the full signification of whatever
character of the composition. It can be a research proposal, essay or a paper. Maintaining the
coherence in the paragraphs is a difficult task because it's often confusing for the writer,
whether his message is clear or not. It is true that the most amazing ideas expressed in the
most brilliant sentence won't inspire anyone unless connected properly. A reader must find the
connecting pushthat motivates him to read on.
How you can achieve coherence in your writing largely depends on your attitude. You should
never assume that the reader already knows what you are trying to tell him. Instead, this helps.
You try harder to provide a transition that logically explains how thoughts in the text related
one after the other.
Beginning of all, in order to achieve cohesion in your writing, the two things counts the most:
Topic Sentence and Paragraph Development. The Topic Sentence is the controlling idea of the
paragraph. It delineates the level of the paragraph. Paragraph development on the other hand,
results due to the proper organization of topic sentences. They both act as a significant part in
making a smooth composition.
You can use up turns in using conjunctions, prepositional phrases, adverbs or clauses that
function like adverbs. These transitional words help you to organize your thesis in accordance
with logical connection.
To achieve coherence, linking of one sentence to the next, ponder the following exercises:
Transition: The most common technique is to use conjunctions and connecting clauses. You can
either create a list of transitions to help you plug into the points of your draft. It can include
listing down the conjunction, prepositions and phrases according to the situation. For example,
a list of phrases, to signal a reinforcement of ideas or signal a determination.
Synonyms and Antonyms: To deliver yourself from obvious repetition use synonyms. Or, you
might even use antonyms in some instances to demonstrate the relation. You can relate a
sentence by making complete opposite meanings of what you wrote earlier.
Pro-forms: Use of Pronouns and Proverbs is highly commended.
Parallel Structure: Repeating a sentence to prompt the most obvious. Parallelism can provide
coherence at great levels. You can use parallel phrases when composing by ensuring that the
lecturer is not tired with repetition, but recognizes the link between them.
Enumeration: Most importantly, mark the sequence to prominent the connection between the
ideas.
With all the above mentioned exercises you will be able to live up to your expectations of
composing a well-intentioned and coherent theory. In case you need further assistance contact
