Remarks:

Medical document is required to evidence the missing of a

homework due time, the midterm, or the nal is due to
illness.

When applied, the credit will then be recovered by

re-weighting the score at the nal exam.

COURSE EVALUATION Homework (14%: seven
assignments)

Assigned in Weeks 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13: the

assignments will be posted at the courses web page and
emailed to the classs email list.

Collected by 17:30 on Thursdays of Weeks 2, 4, 8, 10, 12

and 14, Monday of Week 7: using the drop-boxes labeled
with STAT-475/675, outside the statistics workshop

Late homework is not accepted: if the delay is due to illness,

provide med note and hand in the homework for credit.

Marked HW will be returned at the tutorials of the

following week: key answers to the homework questions
will be posted in the course web page before the tutorials

1. Course Syllabus 2. Introduction to STAT-475/675
Why to study STAT-475/675?

Recall Statistics is the science of learning from data.

Data: observations of variables

categorical vs quantitative variables (arithmetic operations?)

discrete vs continuous variables

Tons of categorical/discrete data: how to analyze them?

= STAT-475/675

1. Course Syllabus 2. Introduction to STAT-475/675
What to study in STAT-475/675?

Focus on categorical responses

about one, two or more categorical variables (Parts I and II)

about relationship of one categorical response with explanatory

variables (Parts III and IV)

Statistical modeling and methods for analyzing categorical

data

How to study STAT-475/675?

Follow the basic ideas of modeling/methods

know when to use what procedures

able to implement the statistics methods via R

able to interpret the analysis results

understand the theoretical derivations*

Master the basic inference procedures

the basic statistics procedures studied in STAT-285 and STAT

350, or STAT-201 and STAT 302/305

the method for the simplest case in a class of problems

Dont fall behind.

Recall: Data Analysis Exploration and Inference
Statistical Thinking (The Basic Practice of Statistics, 6th Edn,
by Moore et al.)

Data are numbers with a context.

Where the data come from matters.

Always look at the data.

Beware the lurking variable.

Variation is everywhere.

Conclusions are not certain.

Can we go beyond the data?
