Dear Sir/Madam
I wish you all a happy and prosperous 2013!
Well, in the last odd semester, many changes
were introduced, such as advancing the starting
time of the college by thirty minutes,
implementation of three hour tests for all the
students, special bridge and orientation
programs for the first-year undergraduate
students, an orientation program for new faculty
members, training of faculty advisors to identify
students with psychological problems, training
on first aid by St. Johns Ambulance etc.. These
changes have shown a positive impact on the
performances of students and the faculty
members. Moreover, two new post graduate
programs ME Applied Electronics and ME
Internal Combustion Engines, have been started
with full strength.

Also, I am proud to inform you that students were
admitted to the tune of 99% of our sanctioned
intake strength in both the UG and PG programs
in the current academic year. 82% of our
undergraduate students and 97% of our post
graduate students have been graduated in the
last academic year. In that, 90% of the eligible
students have been placed in industries. In the
research arena, 61 scholars have newly joined in
our 11 research centers. Two new projects were
funded by the DRDO and ISRO to the tune of
about 33.64 lakhs.
Our students have attended many national and
international conferences, and published papers
in journals and conference proceedings. Many of
our students have done outstanding co-
curricular work such as winning Microsoft Coding
contest, winning the Ambuja best student
chapter award for the seventh time, developing
new web applications etc.
The College signed MOUs with London South
B a n k Un i v e r s i t y, L o n d o n , Ge mi n i
Communications Ltd., Chennai, Western-
Thompson Research Institute, Chennai and
Rajalakshmi Engineering College to have better
co-operation with institutes and industries for
training and research. Many of our sports teams
have brought laurels to the college. The above
achievements are detailed in the following
pages.
The College has initiated incentives to faculty
based on overall pass percentage in subjects
handled by them and for the best UG and PG
projects mentored by them. A plan to enhance
the PhD allowance is in the pipeline. The college
has distributed subsidized laptop computers
worth Rs 15 lakhs and scholarships worth Rs 40
lakhs to students in the odd semester and has
planned to distribute an additional 80 lakhs
worth of scholarships in the even semester.
All the above alluded achievements have
provided a grand start to this academic year and I
look forward to move to a higher level of
achievements in the years to come.

548 out of the 612 eligible final year students have
been recruited by various companies in this academic
year till date. Nearly 25 companies have visited our
campus which includes 17 core companies and 8
software companies.

The NASSCOM conducted an eligibility test on 26
August 2012 and all the students cleared the test.
National Maritime Day Celebrations Committee,
Chennai presented a Felicitation Award to
Prof.K.V.Sivanarayana at the World Maritime day
celebrations held on 25th September 2012, in
recognition of his outstanding contribution to the
shipping industry.
Mr. T.K.Thivakaran, successfully defended his Ph.D.
thesis titled, Machine Vision Based Surface
Roughness Analysis Using Wavelet Transform With
Neural Network Approach
Dr.S.Prabhu of BioTech department is a reviewer for
'Scientific Research and Essays' journal.
Dr. Nalinkanth V. Ghone from the department of
biotechnology delivered a lecture on "Natural
Nanotubes in Perspective as Biomaterial at IIT
Madras on 20th June, 2012.
Dr. B.Thi l aka, Associ ate Professor, Appl i ed
Mathematics department was invited as a resource
person for the Faculty Development Training Program

Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM) and
Ericsson India Ltd have come forward to set up a
collaborative research lab in the Department of
Computer Science and Engineering. The research lab
is named DON (Data Sciences Open systems Next
Generation) and was inaugurated on July 27, 2012 by
Prof Sheel Nuna, QUT Australia and by Prof
B. Ravindran, IITM. Prof. Sheel Nuna, QUT, Australia
listed the benefits of Indo- Australian Collaboration.
Mr. Manoj and Mr. Shivasankar, researchers in
Ericsson India Ltd, briefed on the importance of this
research lab. Prof B.Ravindran, IIT-Madras made a
presentation on the Importance of the Applications
of Machine Learning.
Dr. Susan Elias, Professor, CSE department obtained a
funded research project titled "Network Throughput
Enhancement in Distributed Systems Using Cross
Layer Optimization" for a sum of Rs. 24.64 lakhs from
DRDO. The duration of the project is two years.
Ms.R.Vanaja from CSE department is the co-
investigator for this project.
Dr.G. Sumathi received a funded project from DRDO
for a sum of Rs 4.55 lakhs. The project is titled A
Framework for Resource Monitoring and Fault
Tol erant schedul i ng i n Heterogeneous
Computational Grids. The project is to be completed
in two years.
S. Swarna Parvathi of IT department was accorded a
funded project for a sum of Rs. 9 lakhs towards a
project titled Robust Video Streaming using H.264
Scalable Video Coding over Mobile Broadband
Networks in December 2012.
The IT department of the college signed a MoU with

M/S Gemini Communications Limited (GCL) on 15
October, to enhance Industry-Institute Interaction. As
part of the MoU, GCL will set up a Forensic lab in
the college. The PG Lab of the IT department has been
identified for this purpose. A short term course for
about 20 students will be held regularly as part of the
MoU.
A Blood Donation Camp was organized by NSS, NCC,
YRC, LEO and Rotaract clubs on the 9th and 10th of
October 2012. A free Dental Check up, Eye screening
and Diabetes check up was also arranged for the
students, faculty and supporting staff.
An impressive passing out parade ceremony was held
by the 11th batch of Marine engineering graduates at

The department of Mechanical Engineering, signed a
MoU with M/S. Western Thomson India for Technical
Consultancy and for conducting training programs on
Quality concepts.
The college signed MoUs with London Southbank
University, London and with Rajalakshmi
Engineering College, Chennai to have better co-
operation with institutes in India and abroad for
training and research.

September 2012. Dr.G. Vijayalakshmi, Senior
Principal Scientist & Coordinator-HRD, Department
of Food Microbiology, Central Food Technological
Research Institute, was the chief guest.
A national Workshop on Modern Biotechnological

department of Biotechnology on the 13th & 14th of

The department of Applied Chemistry organized a
national seminar on Recent trends in synthetic
methods and chemistry of national products on the

14 and 15 of October 2012. The seminar was
sponsored by University Grants Commission.
The department of Electrical & Electronics
Engineering organized a two day workshop on DSP
based system design using TI processor and FPGA on
the 19th and 20th of October 2012.The workshop was
done in collaboration with Enixs Technology India Pvt
Ltd. The workshop was coordinated by Dr.Sudhakar
K.Bharathan and Mr. Venkatraman.

S.Sathyanarayanan and Santhosh Kumar, third year
students from the department of Information
Technology participated in Windows 8 Appfest under
the category of MS Windows Application Coding
Competition and won the top rank. Their coding
constituted a Guiness world record. The App
development marathon was conducted by Microsoft.
Student Achievements
The SVCE students chapter of Indian Institute of
Chemical Engineers was bestowed with AMBUJA Best
Student's chapter award (First prize) for 2012. The
award carried a certificate, trophy and a cash prize of
Rs.15000/-.The chapter is receiving the award for the
seventh time. Madhav, final year student from the
department of Computer Science and Engineering
has developed a new web application that gives
information on artistes and events. The news item
appeared in 'The Hindu'.
The final year project " Electronic ballot box done by
Mei yappan, Ni ranj an Bal aj i and Mahadev
Subramanian from the 2008-12 batch of Electronics
and Communication Engineering department was
selected as a best project under the Innovative
Student Projects Award 2012, given by Indian
National Academy of Engineering. The students were
guided by Mr.S.Senthilrajan, Assistant Professor in
ECE department.
S.Sathyanarayanan third year student from the
department of Information Technology has been
selected by the company 'ThoughtWorks' for a
Campus Fellowship Program.
Poorani, third year student of the Biotechnology
department, received the IASc-INSA-NASI Summer
Research Fellowship-2012 for 2 months during the
summer vacation. The fellowship of Rs. 7,000/- per
month would be under Dr. M. D. Bashyam, Centre for
DNA Fingerprinting & Diagnostics, Hyderabad.
R.Vijay Subramanian of third year Biotechnology
department participated in a Tamil debate named
"Sanke Muzhangu" which was conducted and
telecasted by TV Channel, 'Imayam'.
A 'sparrow survey' project was carried out by Eco club
members of the college which was co-ordinated by
Dr. T. Murugavel, Head of the Humanities and Social
sciences department. The survey was done in North
Chennai area cover i ng Royapuram, Ol d
Washermenpet, New Washermenpet, Thondaiyarpet
and Thiruvotriyur.

Prakash, final year students of Electronics and
Communication Engineering department, presented
a paper at the International Conference on
Information and Electronics Engineering, held at
Singapore. The visit was partially sponsored by the
college.
