CHAPTER 1 How Helping Others Can Reduce Stress and Increase Happiness Helping others brings good feelings to the giver and the receiver of the good deeds. Using your special gifts to help others can be a gift to yourself as you enjoy a self esteem boost for making others lives better, and make the world a better place. You feel more worthy of good deeds yourself, your trust in the decency of people is reinforced, and you feel more connected to yourself and to others. In fact, research shows that those who demonstrate more altruistic social interest tend to enjoy higher levels of mental health, above and beyond the practical benefits of receiving help and other known psychospiritual, stress, and demographic factors that you would expect. Creating a balanced lifestyle that includes service to others can help you feel less stress as well, as you feel more connected to your spirit, more grateful for what you have, and less invested in the rat race that causes stress for so many of us. Focusing on the positive in life, and creating more positive things in the world, can help you to maintain greater feelings of happiness and fulfillment as well.

Its often been said that its better to give than to receive, but did you know that this clich is actually backed by research? While many of us feel too stressed and busy to worry about helping others with their burdens, or would like to think about doing good deeds when we have more spare time, energy and money, altruism is its own reward, and can actually help you relieve stress. Altruistic acts can improve your quality of life in several ways, and are absolutely worth the effort. Here are some ways that helping others helps you. Keeping Things In Perspective Many people dont realize the strong impact that their comparisons have on their outlook. However, your expectations of life and the people you compare yourself to can make a real difference in your level of life satisfaction. For example, your home may seem shabby to you if youre comparing it to the living rooms you see in the pages of decorating magazines, or it may seem palatial and opulent compared to the structures inhabited by people in impoverished countries. Helping others in need, especially those who are less fortunate than you, can provide you with a sense of perspective on how fortunate you are to have what you do in life -- be it health, money, or a safe place to sleep, and help you focus less on the things you feel you lack. Helping others with their problems can also help you gain a more positive perspective on the things in life that cause you stress.
These are ways you help lead a person in Christ Step one: God's purpose, peace, and love. God wants you to experience peace and life abundantly and eternally (Romans 5:1, John 3:16, 10:10). Step Two: Our problem: Separation. God created us in His own image to have abundant life. He did not make us robots to automatically love and obey Him but gave us the gift of free choice. Hence, we chose to disobey God on our own will, which resulted in our separation (Romans 3:23, 6:23). Our attempts through the ages have failed to bridge the gap (Isaiah 59:2, Proverbs 14:12). Step Three: God's remedy: The cross. Jesus Christ is the only answer to this problem. He died on the cross, rose from the grave, and paid our penalty (I Timothy 2:5, I Peter 3:18, Romans 5:8). Step Four: Our Response. To receive Christ, we must trust in Him by personal invitation (Revelation 3:20, John 1:12, Romans 10:9). Then pray with the individual and make sure they receive discipling. And focus on the basics, which include prayer, scripture, devotional life, accountability, and discipleship. Priorities: We should see a church that is growing in Jesus Christ in three priorities: First, worship, praise and study (Philippians 3:10). Second, growing in a relationship with other believers and discipleship (Matthew 5:23, Proverbs 17:17). Third, reaching our friends, neighbors, and the world (Matthew 28, Genesis 12:1-3). The Romans Road The Romans Road is a group of Bible verses from the book of Romans that are used to help people to better understand Salvation, and to lead people to Christ. (Romans 3:23, 5:8, 6:23, 10:9-10, 10:13) The First thing you have to realize is that YOU ARE a sinner. -Romans 3:23 states, "For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God." We are ALL sinners. But, God loves us and He sent His son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross for our sins. Next realize that God Loves YOU. Romans 5:8 says, "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."* There is no greater love than that someone would lay down their life for a friend. That's what Christ did for us. Without Him, you're literally doomed. Romans 6:23, "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ." Yes, the wages of sin is death, but God has given us the privilege of Eternal life in Christ. It's a gift, you don't have to work for it, just ASK! What a gift!!! Confess your sins.... Romans 10:9-10, "That if you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord', and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved" Romans 10:13, "For Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord, will be saved." That's all you have to do! (Call on the name of Jesus and ask him into your heart, and you will be saved from the eternal pits of Hell! THE PRAYER.... If you honestly, in your heart, believe everything that was said here, pray this prayer:
Dear Jesus, I KNOW I am a sinner. I know that you were sent by God to die on the cross, to save me from my sins. I ask you now to forgive me of the sins I have committed, and come into my heart. Thank you for dying on the cross for me. From this day forward, I will follow your will and serve you. AMEN. If you prayed that Prayer, and believe, welcome to the kingdom of God! We wish you would share this with a friend or family member, and we would love to hear from you. What Next? Help and Make sure that person will: Find a Church. Now you will need to find a church, so you can join the family of God. They will be there to lead you down the path of Christian living. They are not only spiritual guides, but also can be very close friends. They will always be there when you need them. Get a Bible. A Bible is one of the most important tools for a Christian. I would recommend an NLT (New Living Translation) or the NIV (New International Version). A study Bible is the best. If you would rather read a more literal translation of the Bible, you should get a NASB (New American Standard) or KJV (King James Version). Pray daily. Praying is another important factor. Pick a time that everyday; you have quiet time to pray everyday. Such as before you go to bed, or when you get up in the morning. Focus on God's love for the person, Jesus' death on the cross for our sins, His resurrection, and the person's need to make a commitment to follow Christ. Invite the person to actually pray with you and commit his or her life to Christ.
CHAPTER 2 How God Works in Our Lives The Bible tells us that we can have a relationship with God. How would a relationship with God impact us? Some relationships are like nuclear explosions. There is blinding heat and light and then a whole lot of damage. Some relationships are like roller coasters ? up and down. Some relationships never seem to change. What is a relationship with God like? How does God work in our lives? According to Jesus, over time, Gods influence on our lives grows beyond our expectations until it becomes all-consuming. Relationship with God takes place over time. God builds a relationship with us continually and faithfully, but not explosively. He does not by-pass our wills, He changes them slowly over time. But the result is beyond our expectations. Ultimately, we become like Him and He becomes the very center of our lives. The Bible promises that anyone is able to know God's will, be forgiven of sin, resist temptation, endure hardship, serve obediently, and receive eternal life. God provides the power we need through Jesus' blood, the Scriptures, prayer, hope, love, and other Christians. No one needs to be lost. Anyone can overcome their past, achieve victory over sin, and become what God requires him/her to be. Joshua 1:7,8 - Most people want to succeed in some area: business, family relations, music, athletics, politics, education, etc. God promised Joshua he could succeed in the most important activity in life: serving God. People today also need reassurance that we can succeed in being right with God. People who are not Christians are sometimes overwhelmed by the sacrifices Christians must make, the work to do, habits to change. They become so discouraged they do not even try. Christians may also become discouraged as they try to live for God and find they have failed in some area. Some give up entirely. Others pretend to serve God while living in sin and excusing themselves by saying they simply cannot accomplish what the Bible says. The purpose of this study is to show that God has provided all the blessings we need to serve Him successfully and receive eternal life. These blessings are available to everyone. We must meet conditions that require effort and sacrifice, but all of us are capable of meeting these conditions. You can have God's power working in your life! Consider the Bible promises. Note words referring to power, strength, and ability in these verses. Ex: Suppose a powerful enemy is coming to attack your city, destroy your wives and children, causing great pain and grief. The enemy has a powerful weapon which your army is convinced it cannot defeat. Then the soldiers learn of someone who has a powerful new weapon. Everywhere it has been used, the enemy has been defeated. The new weapon is obtained so every soldier can have one. The weapons come with an instruction manual. Meetings are set up so the soldiers can learn how to use the weapon. Your army can successfully win the victory! All the soldiers have to do is attend the meetings, study the manual, and use the weapons provided. Would you want those soldiers to stay home from 1/2 to 2/3 of the meetings, when they could come? Should they daydream through the meetings? Should they take the manuals home, lay them on the shelf, and rarely read them? The enemy is Satan. You and I are the soldiers. We will surely lose, not just our lives, but our souls eternally unless we learn how to defeat Satan's forces. God has provided armor that is guaranteed to defeat Satan, but we must learn to use it. It comes with a manual we must study - the Bible. The church is instructed to provide meetings so we can learn to use the weapons. You can successfully win the battle against Satan by the means God has supplied. Are you studying and attending the meetings diligently so you can be successful? Are you as diligent as you would want soldiers to be if they were defending you and your family in wartime? Have you even yet enlisted in the army? - Philippians 1:6
As we journey down the road of life, it has many twists and turns in it and also some mountaintop and valley experiences. In the midst of all this, we MUST see God's hand working throughout our lives. Can we mess up God's plan for our lives? Sort of yes, and sort of no. We will do things that are NOT God's will; like sin, disobedience (which is sin), etc., that will get us off of God's track for our lives. But the moment we repent and seek Him, He works us back into His plan and will for our lives.You may think - no, you don't understand, I messed up too bad for God to use me. No, that is not so!!!I have wrestled with that myself, but we need to remember that God is BIGGER than our mess-ups. And guess what? God KNEW you were going to mess up even BEFORE you messed up. He also KNEW when you would repent and had ALREADY laid out the path BEFOREHAND to get you back on track with His will for you - WOW!!!Not only does God move in straightening out our mess-ups, but He also is moving in our everyday life as we walk with Him. God has probably directed our lives as we have sought his will on specific matters. The following twelve principles reveal how God can guide his children today.
DISCOVERING GOD'S PLAN FOR YOUR LIFE
1. Commit yourself to do God's will (John 7:17; Rom. 12:1, 2). 2. Look for God's will in the Bible (Ps. 119:105). 3. Pray for guidance in applying God's will (Luke 18:1). 4. Make sure your motives are pure in seeking God's will (Matt. 6:22). 5. Begin by doing what you know is right (Rom. 12:2). 6. Face your own thoughts, strengths, and weaknesses realistically (1 Cor 12:11, 29-31). 7. You will have inner peace if your decisions are correct (Phil. 4:7; Col. 3:15). 8. Seek spiritual counsel from godly people (Ps. 11:14). 9. Study circumstances to see whether doors are open or closed (Acts 16:6, 7; 1 Cor. 16:9). 10. Do not move forward until you know you are obeying the Bible (Isa. 40:31). 11. Judge decisions by the long look (Rom. 12:2; 8:39). 12. Be flexible about past decisions you have made regarding the will of God (Phil. 3:13).
CHAPTER 3 How to Change Yourself
Becoming a Christian requires change. We must remove old habits and develop new ones. This study considers Bible principles to help us improve ourselves: faith, love, repentance, Bible study, prayer, avoiding temptation, and patience. God's word is the best source of guidance for self-help and motivation for self-improvement. Have you ever had difficulty trying to change a habit? Human beings are creatures of habit. We tend to continue acting as we have acted in the past. Like a river flowing through a canyon, the longer a habit continues, the more deeply it becomes ingrained, and the harder it is to change. This is true of all habits, good or bad. Ephesians 4:22-24 shows that major changes must occur when we are converted to serve God. Old practices and attitudes must be replaced by new ones. Christians must learn good habits like Bible study, prayer, love, faith, patience, attending church meetings, giving, teaching others, etc. We must also eliminate bad habits like foul language, uncontrolled temper, gambling, drugs, smoking, drinking, gossip, lying, pornography, sexual promiscuity, etc. Knowing what changes to make is not enough. We also need to know how to make them. Change does not come easily. Since the Scriptures provide us to all good works (2 Timothy 3:16,17), they give all the guidance we need. God's word is the best source of guidance for self-help and motivation for self-improvement. Let us study 12 specific, practical steps the Bible gives to show us how to change and improve our selves to become what God wants. Step1: Change Your Purpose in Life. Before people are willing to act, they must be motivated. A sound sleeper is more likely to get up in the middle of the night if the house is on fire than if he remembers he did not brush his teeth! Christians have some of the strongest possible motives for changing. Consider some: Love and Dedication to God Romans 12:1,2 - Christians are transformed (changed) by renewing their minds (cf. Eph. 4:23). To live differently, we must think differently. We must not seek to be like the world but to use our bodies in God's service. The Macedonians practiced generous giving because they first gave themselves to the Lord (2 Corinthians 8:5). Changing our conduct becomes much easier when we are totally dedicated to God's service. (See also Ecc. 12:13; Matt. 6:33; 16:24.) 1 John 5:3; 4:19,9 - What motivates us to obey God? Our love for Him. What motivates us to love Him? The fact that He loved us. How do we know He loved us? Because He gave His Son to die to save us. Love is one of the strongest forces in existence. It can move a woman to rescue her children from a burning building or a man to lift an automobile that has crushed a loved one. If you are having difficulty changing yourself, you need to learn to appreciate God's blessings and mercy. (See also 1 John 2:15-17; Matt. 10:34-37; 22:37-40; John 14:15; 2 Cor. 5:14-17.) Imitation of Christ The desire to be like someone we admire is another powerful motivation. Sports heroes inspire young people in athletics. Washington and Lincoln are models for patriotic citizens. So godly people like Abraham, Noah, Ruth, and Mary motivate us to serve God. But the greatest example of all is that of Jesus. Matthew 10:24,25 - A disciple seeks to be like his master. Christians are disciples of Jesus (Acts 11:26). We should follow His steps because He left us a sinless example (1 Peter 2:21,22). As we face each decision in life, we should ask, "What would Jesus do?" This will give us strong motivation to change our lives. (See also Gal. 2:20; Matt. 16:24; Col. 3:10). Desire for Eternal Life, Not Eternal Punishment 1 Corinthians 9:25 - Athletes control their habits so they can win a temporary, earthly honor. Christians have an even stronger motive. We seek the crown of eternal life (James 1:12; Rev. 2:10). We should set our minds on our eternal reward, not on earthly things (Col. 3:1-6; 2 Peter 1:10,11; 2 Thess. 1:8,9). Lack of motivation is a major reason people do not change to please God. They do not have sufficient desire to change. Instead they want to please themselves or their friends and family. Often they are too concerned with the things of this life. Until our motives are right, little else in this study will help us. But when we are determined that serving God is our most important purpose in life, then we will find the means to make the necessary changes. When we lack the motivation to change, let us think about why we should love God, think about the importance of being like Christ, and think about our eternal destiny. Step2: Believe You Can Change with God's Help. Proverbs 4:23 - Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life. The way you act is determined by your attitudes and intentions. People and circumstances may influence you, but you do not have to give in. You do what you decide to do (cf. Matt. 15:18,19; 12:34-37). 1 Corinthians 10:13 - God will not allow temptations that are beyond your ability to bear. He will always make a way of escape. "God is faithful." He will always keep this promise. It follows that you can break any bad habit and develop any good habit according to God's will. Philippians 4:13 - We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. This includes changing to please Him. If we trust our own strength, we will fail. Satan can defeat us. If we use Christ's strength we will succeed, because Satan can never defeat Him. Perhaps we have failed in the past because we have trusted our own power instead of using Christ's. People sometimes convince themselves, "I just can't change. It's too late. Besides, I'm only human." They are not just belittling themselves; they are denying God's word. They will fail simply because they will give up instead of persisting to use God's power. Psalm 37:5 - If you commit yourself to the Lord and trust Him, He will accomplish His will for you. No matter how strong a temptation you face, no matter how long you have practiced a sin, if God says to change, you can change. (See also Eph. 6:10-18; 3:20,21; 2 Cor. 9:8; Josh. 1:5-9.) Step 3: Study the Bible about Your Habit. Joshua 1:8 - To succeed in God's work, meditate on God's word. List the pertinent Bible passages about each habit you need to change. List reasons why you should change. Meditate on these verses daily, filling your mind with them. (Cf. Psalm 1:2; 119:11.)
Deuteronomy 6:6-9 - Frequently remind yourself of these verses. Write them and place them where they will remind you: on your bathroom mirror, on the refrigerator door, on your table at mealtime, on the TV knob. Matthew 4:1-11 - Jesus overcame temptation by quoting Scripture. But this worked only because He knew the Scripture. Memorize verses about your habit so that, when you are tempted, they will come to mind and strengthen you. Quote them to yourself and to those who tempt you. (See also Prov. 3:5,6; 2 Tim. 3:16,17; Eph. 6:17; Rom. 1:16; Heb. 4:12.) Step4: Repent of Sin. Acts 8:22 - Sin requires repentance. Repentance is a change of mind - a determined commitment to cease sin and obey God (see Matt. 21:28,29; Acts 17:30; 11:23). Before one can change his conduct, he must change his mind. Proverbs 28:13 - Do not cover up your sin, deny it, excuse it, or blame someone else. Admit the error and be truly sorry (2 Cor. 7:10). But sorrow is not enough. We have truly repented only when we are so sorry that we determine to change our conduct. Most other achievements in life require about 10% ability and 90% just plain determination and hard work. In spiritual matters, every accountable person has the ability to please God; so changing to please God is 100% determined by our choice. God has provided everything we need. The decision is ours. We will never change until we make up our minds to pursue the means God provides until we succeed. The decision to do this is repentance, and no one will change to please God without it. Step 5: Develop a Plan of Action. Proverbs 14:22 - We must devise to do good, not evil. God's example demonstrates the importance of planning. He purposed man's redemption (Rom. 8:28), the church (Eph. 3:10,11), the temple (Heb. 8:5), etc. (cf. Gen. 12:1-7). Likewise, God's servants need to have a plan to succeed in His service (Luke 14:26-33; Dan. 1:8; Psalm 17:3; Acts 11:23; 2 Cor. 9:7). In what other important endeavors will we succeed without a plan? Consider the forethought needed to build a house, run a business or a household, program a computer, etc. Worthwhile activities, to be successful, need planning. Likewise, to change your life, you need a specific, practical checklist of steps you will take to change. Analyze the circumstances or causes that lead you to fail to do right, then plan how to avoid those causes. It may help to write your plan down and modify it as needed. This plan will include some specific points we are studying plus other points that fit your specific problem. Many people fail to change to please God because they never planned to succeed. They did not plan to fail, but they failed to plan! Step 6: Pray Regularly. Prayer is essential in two ways. A child of God should pray for forgiveness. If you are not yet a child of God, you need to believe in Jesus, repent of sins, confess Christ, and be baptized to be forgiven of sins (Mark 16:16; Rom. 10:9,10; Acts 2:38; 22:16). When you have done those things, you become a child of God (Gal. 3:26,27; Rom. 6:3,4; 1 Peter 1:22,23). If you sin afterward, you need to pray for forgiveness (Acts 8:22; 1 John 1:8-10; Prov. 28:13; Matt. 6:12). Then pray for God's help. Matthew 6:13 - Ask God to "deliver us from evil" (cf. Matt. 26:41). Tell God exactly what your problem is. Pray often and regularly (1 Thess. 5:17; Col. 4:2). Pray especially at the moment when you face temptation (Matt. 26:36-46). God has promised that, if you ask His help, He will hear and answer (1 Peter 5:7; Phil. 4:6,7; Eph. 6:11,13,18). Step 7: Seek Help from Other Christians. James 5:16 - Christians should confess their faults to one another so they can pray for one another. We should bear one another's burdens (Gal. 6:2). If our sins have harmed specific individuals, we should apologize to them (Matt. 5:23,24). When we are fighting an especially difficult habit, it may help to choose one or two special counselors to talk with regularly. They can give us Bible passages and good advice about how to change. They can encourage us. It may motivate us just to know that others are aware of our problem. And they can surely pray for us. Public church meetings are especially designed to give encouragement (Heb. 10:24,25; 3:12,13; Eph. 4:15,16). We need to attend regularly for many reasons, but especially we need encouragement as we try to become what God wants us to be. Step 8: Diligently Practice What is Right. 1 Corinthians 15:58 - Be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the Lord's work. Abundant, steadfast work is needed. We have discussed several steps to prepare us to change, but none of them can substitute for hard work and dedicated effort. All the good attitudes in the world will not get the job done until we follow through with action. God does not promise change will be easy, but He promises it is possible if we work diligently according to His word. James 1:22-25 - Be doers of the word, not just hearers. Habits are formed by repeated action. We learn to ride a bicycle by forcing ourselves to practice, even when it feels unnatural and uncomfortable. But repetition produces a habit that then feels natural and enjoyable. So we change to serve God only when we compel ourselves to do what we know is right and repeat it until it becomes "second nature." (See also Rom. 6:1-23; Matt. 7:21; Luke 6:46.) Step 9: Substitue Good Habits for Bad Ones. Ephesians 4:22-32 - Do not just put off the old man. Put on the new man. Note the examples: Speak truth instead of falsehood (v25), work and give to others instead of stealing (v28), speak good instead of evil (v29), show kindness and forgiveness instead of anger and bitterness (v31,32). Matthew 12:43-45 - A demon left a man but later found the man's life still empty. He moved back in bringing seven other demons with him! Jesus applied this to Israel, but it is a general principle. "Nature hates a vacuum." Remove the air from a bottle, and it will try to get back in. Fill the bottle with something substantial, and the air stays out. So your life cannot stay a spiritual void. It will fill with good or evil. Replace bad habits with good and the bad is less likely to return. For example, suppose you determine to watch less TV, so you turn it off, but sit in front of it with nothing else to do. Soon you will turn it on again. But if you become actively involved in family activities, Bible study, etc., soon you will replace it with other habits. For every bad habit you "put off," find some useful activity to "put on" in its place. Step 10: Avoid Temptation. Matthew 6:13 - We should pray, "lead us not into temptation." If we pray this, surely we obligate ourselves to avoid people, places, and situations that tempt us (cf. Rom. 13:14). 1 Corinthians 15:33 - Evil company corrupts good habits. Note: "Do not be deceived." Many people think they can return to bad company without returning to bad habits. They are deceived! Many habits - such as drinking, smoking, drug abuse, gambling, and sexual promiscuity - are begun and continued because of "peer pressure." Breaking such habits by themselves is hard enough, but it is far more difficult when "friends" urge us to continue them (1 Peter 4:3,4; Prov. 13:20; Ex. 23:2). Psalm 26:5 - We should hate the congregation of evildoers. Too often people say, "I won't drink (or dance or gamble, etc.). I'll just go to the tavern (or dance hall or casino) to be with my friends." When people have gathered together for the purpose of practicing sin, Christians belong somewhere else! (Cf. 2 Cor. 6:14-18; Eph. 5:11.) You cannot change a bad habit while continuing to run with the "crowd" that caused the habit. Changing the habit will require changing your friends because the "friends" are part of the habit! Step 11: Face One Day at a Time. Matthew 6:33,34 - Do not worry about tomorrow. Today's temptations will be enough to handle today. Handle tomorrow's temptations tomorrow - if tomorrow comes. Often people quit trying to serve God because they are overwhelmed by the sacrifices required to live the rest of their lives for God. But ask yourself this: "Can I practice what is right today - just today?" Of course you can. So when you get up each morning, promise yourself and God, "I will live today for God." Don't worry about handling tomorrow. If it comes, you can handle it the same way you will handle today. Two men were climbing a steep path up a tall mountain. One looked to the top and asked, "How will we ever make it?" The other replied, "One step at a time." And that is the only way for you to change yourself. Step 12: Be Patient. Romans 2:7 - We receive eternal life if we continue patiently in well doing. We must be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the Lord's work (1 Cor. 15:58). Galatians 6:9 - Let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Your habits did not develop overnight and will not likely disappear overnight. It will take time. If you fall, repent, and ask God's forgiveness. But get up and go on. Do not give up. (1 John 1:8-2:2) 2 Peter 3:18 - Becoming a mature Christian is a process of growth. You are born again as a baby and gradually grow up in Christ. You may look at mature Christians and think, "Why can't I be like them?" But they probably took years to mature. Do not be impatient with yourself.
CHAPTER 4 How Can You Be Sure Jesus Has Forgiven Your Sins?
Different ideas are taught about how a person receives forgiveness of sins by the blood of Jesus Christ. Are we saved by "faith only," or must we obey the gospel? Is baptism necessary to salvation from sin or is obedience not essential? Is baptism sprinkling, pouring, or immersion? Should babies (infants) be baptized? What can we learn from New Testament examples of people who were forgiven? What does the Bible teach? Introduction: To receive eternal life according to the gospel of Christ, a person must be forgiven of sins by Jesus' blood (Ephesians 1:7; Matthew 26:28; 1 Peter 2:24). But many people are unsure about whether or not they have been forgiven. Others may think that they have been forgiven, but would be surprised to learn that Jesus does not agree. Matthew 7:21-23 - Many people, who believe in the Lord, will expect Jesus to accept them at the judgment. Instead He will reject them because they have not done the will of the Father. Acts 23:1; 26:9 - Saul was a Jew who opposed Jesus in all good conscience, doing what he sincerely believed he should do. Yet he was the chief of sinners (1 Timothy 1:12-15). Clearly he had been misled. What about you and me? Is it possible we have been misled like these people? What about baptism or "faith only." What about repentance and confession? Should babies be baptized? Is baptism sprinkling, pouring, or immersion? Surely these questions deserve your careful investigation. The Bible teaches that we can be sure Jesus has forgiven us if we have obeyed the gospel conditions of forgiveness. Hebrews 5:9 - Jesus is the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey Him. (See also Acts 10:35; Luke 6:46; 1 John 2:3-6.) 1 Peter 1:22 - We purify our souls in obeying the truth. Romans 6:17,18 - We are made free from sin when we obey from the heart the doctrine delivered. If we recognize Jesus as our Lord, then we must obey the conditions of forgiveness just as the gospel reveals them, without any human changes (Acts 17:11; Galatians 1:8,9; 2 John 9). This study is designed to help each be sure about salvation. Please begin with a brief self-examination to show us where we are now (2 Cor. 13:5). Then we will study what the Bible says about salvation and we can each compare our own case to Jesus' teaching. 1. Have you made a personal commitment to serve Jesus? (a) yes, (b) no. 2. Have you been baptized? (a) yes, (b) no. If so, how old were you? Were you baptized by (a) sprinkling, (b) pouring, or (c) immersion? Why were you baptized? (a) to please loved ones, (b) as a sign I had been saved, (c) to receive forgiveness of sins, (d) because others were doing it, (e) to join a denomination, (f) other: When you repented of sin and determined to live for God, how long was it till you were baptized? 3. Suppose a person sincerely does the following things. At what point do you believe his sins would be washed away? When he (a) hears the gospel, (b) believes, (c) repents, (d) confesses Jesus, (e) prays for forgiveness, (f) is baptized, Is it possible to be deceived, thinking God is pleased with us when he is not? Matt. 7:21-23 says there are many people who think they are doing wonderful works in Jesus' name, but they will be surprised in the judgment when He rejects them! What about you and me? Will we be among that number? What must we do to be sure this does not happen to us? Jesus answers this question in verse 21. We must do the will of the Father. What does the Father require us to do to be forgiven of sins? Jesus said all people must be taught the gospel, and "he that believeth and is baptized shall be saved" (Mark 16:15,16). To be sure we are saved, then, we must hear the gospel, believe it, and be baptized. Notice that baptism, according to God's word, does not come after salvation, but is an essential step in order to receive salvation. Later, in Acts 2:38, Peter preached about Jesus, then he commanded: "Repent, and be baptized ... for the remission of sins..." This shows that hearing, repentance, and baptism are essential to forgiveness. Again we note that remission is a result that follows from baptism. It does not come before baptism. Finally, Romans 6:3,4 says we are buried by baptism into Jesus' death. Now Jesus' death is what provides forgiveness, and this passage says we contact that death in baptism, not before. Furthermore, the passage teaches that baptism is a burial or immersion, not a sprinkling or pouring. And since people must hear the gospel, believe, and repent before they are baptized, it follows that baptism is not for babies. What about you? Have you done the will of the Father, or will you be one of the many people who will find out too late that God is not pleased with them? Have you heard the gospel, believed it, repented of your sins, and been Scripturally baptized? Was your baptism an immersion in water, and did you do it for the purpose of receiving forgiveness of sins.
Chapter 5 God help with your trouble Everyone has troubles. We face problems, affliction, suffering, and hardship. We need strength, endurance, and patience. Why do people suffer? Are all trials the result of sin committed by the one who suffers? Why does God allow trials, worries, anxieties, and difficulties? Should we blame God and turn from Him? Can troubles and suffering actually make us better people? Is it possible to faithfully endure our difficulties? What solutions does the Bible offer to help us endure and overcome our problems, afflictions, and hardships? What ever you need or what you just have to kneel down talk to the lord first you have to thank him for all the things he has do for us. "Man who is born of woman is of few days and full of trouble" (Job 14:1). We can especially appreciate these words when we think of the suffering endured by the one who spoke them. Different people deal with different problems and afflictions, and it seems that some suffer more hardships than others do. But we all know by personal experience and from the experiences of those we know, that Job's statement is true. Troubles concern us, not just because hardship itself is a burden, but also because affliction can lead to spiritual temptations. We may be tempted to feel that our trials justify committing sin. We may become so discouraged that we blame God for our troubles, lose faith in Him, or begin to doubt His goodness and mercy. As Job's wife said, "Curse God and die" (Job 2:9). The purpose of this study is to offer Bible answers to questions people often ask about suffering. Why do people suffer? Can good come from suffering? Is it possible to endure affliction with patience and faithfulness? How can God give us strength to endure our hardships and overcome our temptations? What does the Bible say? Why do people suffer There are several reasons, not just one reason, why people suffer.Sometimes people suffer as a result of their sins.King Saul lived a miserable life and eventually was slain because he had rebelled against God (1 Chron. 10:13,14).Judas killed himself because he had betrayed Jesus (Matthew 27:3- 5).Likewise today, alcoholics may develop disease, thieves may be imprisoned, etc.Some people think this is the only reason people ever suffer, but we will see that it is not. Some people think that only wicked people suffer, but God is on the side of the righteous and will remove all their troubles. It follows that, if a person is suffering, he must have committed some sin he should repent of. This was the theory of Job's friends (Job 4:7-9); disproving this idea is a main theme of that book. This same false doctrine is taught by many "faith healers" who teach people that God must remove all their problems if they are right with Him. But we have learned that even righteous people suffer. This is important for the following reasons: * We should not conclude that we have been guilty of sin every time we have a problem. Maybe we are suffering because of sin, so we should examine our lives. But maybe we are suffering for other reasons, perhaps because we are righteous. * We should surely never reject a Bible teaching just because it may lead to suffering. If all suffering was the result of our own sin, and if a course of action led to suffering, then we would conclude it was a sinful act. But we have learned that godly people often suffer for doing right. * We should not become Christians thinking it will automatically solve all our problems. If this is our motive, we may fall away when the hardships come. If we believe that all suffering results from a person's own sin, and if we see good people suffering, we may be tempted to blame God or to think He is not keeping His promises. But we have learned that all people suffer, whether or not they are righteous. The command to endure suffering is just another part of a Christian's life, like the command to study the Bible, pray, worship, etc. Faithful Christians of all ages have suffered; we are not the only ones. We should expect suffering to come, so our faith will not be shaken when it does. The ultimate and primary blame for suffering rests on Satan who tempts people to sin and thereby brought sin into the world. The secondary blame rests upon people, ourselves included, who have given in to temptation and committed sin that led to suffering. Yes, God did create suffering as a punishment for sin, but only after He had given people a life without problems and had warned them of the consequences of sin. When they chose to sin, He should no more be blamed for punishing them than a parent should be blamed when he must punish a rebellious child. (Cf. James 1:13,15.) Remember, if you blame God and reject Him because you are suffering, then you are doing exactly what Satan wants you to do. He has defeated you! The only way to defeat Satan and really overcome hardship is to maintain your faithfulness to God in spite of it. James 1:2-4 - Count it joy when we face trials (hardly the natural reaction), because this leads to patience and completeness in God's service. Whoever developed patience when his patience was never tried? Romans 5:3-5 - Rejoice in tribulations because they work steadfastness, approvedness, and hope. Even in the physical realm, which bones and muscles are the strongest? The ones that face the most hardship. If you lay a block of ice and a block of clay in the sun, one is melted and the other is hardened. The same circumstance produces opposite results. The story is told of two sons of an alcoholic. One son became a drunkard, the other became a teetotaler. Both explained their conduct the same way: "What can you expect with a father like mine?" The same problem produced opposite results. Trials defeat some people but strengthen others. It depends on how we deal with them.
CHAPTER 6 SELF CONTROL When we practice self-control, we do so by limiting and restraining those things which are in opposition to what God requires. Self-control in a person can take many forms. In other words, self-control will be shown in different ways for each individual person. For example: If someone does something bad to you some people may want to get even with that person by abusing them or hitting them. The person needs to exercise self-control by restraining themselves. If you like beer - you may be tempted to drink a lot of it and become drunk. By exercising self-control you will only drink alcohol in moderation. If you enjoy food some people will keep on eating it beyond what is healthy. These people need to show restraint in the amount of food they eat they need self-control. You are alone with your boyfriend or girlfriend the temptation to have sex together is very real for some people. Self-control of their desires is important to avoid any unwise decisions being made.
Paul advice on self-control Samson is a case of a man who couldn't exercise self control. Samson's birth was promised by an angel to the childless wife of Manoah of the tribe of Dan. The angel announced "...for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb to the day of his death". Such a vow required the person to separate or devote himself entirely to God's service for a fixed period of time. The central part of the vow therefore was in its devotion and separateness. And of course this same vow applies to all people who are called by the Gospel - we are to be separate. Samson was not like most of the other judges. He was not appointed to lead an army, but rather with his great physical strength, coupled with bravery, he was to do the work of the army himself. His work was to begin to deliver Israel from the Philistine oppression. We know then, that Samson's special gift from God was supernatural strength. His strength was such that at a place called Ramath-lehi he found the new jawbone of an ass and with it killed one thousand of the Philistines. His strength was so great that he carried away the gates of a city. But despite all these great conquering, he didn't have the strength to rule his own lustful passions. The physical strength that Samson had, seems to have produced in Samson self- confidence rather than dependence on God. As a result he broke the Nazarite vow because he couldn't resist the Philistine women. As a result he ended up grinding corn in a Philistine grist mill with his eyes bored out.paul thought that self-control was important and so he wrote a lot of advice about it. This can be seen in a letter he wrote to Titus. He stated that the elders must be self-controlled. Since an overseer is entrusted with God's work, he must be blamelessnot overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain. Rather he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined. Titus Ch.1:7- 8 NIV He told Titus to teach self-control to the older men. Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance. Titus Ch.2:2 NIV The older women were to teach self-control to the younger women. Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God. Titus Ch.2:3-5 The young men were also encouraged to have self-control. Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. Titus Ch.2:6 So from these writings of Paul we can see that everybody needs to learn to be self- controlled. Paul made this such a big point because he knew that self-control does not come naturally. Self-control and sin (disobedience to God) Self-control is a challenge to everybody. Each person has some area in thought or action where they find self-control difficult. However, if we dont exercise self-control then it can lead to sin (disobedience to God). Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 1 Corinthians Ch.6:9-10 All of these sins listed in these verses come about because of poor self-control.
Praise of self-control Self-mastery is the greatest of all victories. Better a patient man than a warrior, a man who controls his temper than one who takes a city. Proverbs Ch.16:32 NIV Men who have subdued entire kingdoms have been defeated in the efforts to control themselves! For example, lack of self-control of a bad temper can be evidence of pride and impatience. There are many examples of those who did control their temper. David stayed calm when he was cursed. Nehemiah also showed that he could control his spirit even when the enemy sneered at him and attempted to destroy him. However Samson and Uzziah are examples of people who could not control themselves: a man who controls his temper [is better] than one who takes a city.
Chapter 7 What the bible say about Money
Perhaps youve heard the expression "money is the root of all evil". Many people assume that means that God hates money. Lets take a closer look at that verse... The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. But you, men of God, flee from all this; and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. 1 Timothy 6:10-11 Money: root of all evil or a gift from God? So this is really a warning to beware of the distraction that the pursuit of money can be, and a challenge to make God the priority in our lives. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Luke 12:34 Money is not evil, in fact the Bible clearly states that money is a gift from God. You may say to yourself, "My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me." But remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth. Deuteronomy 8:17-18 Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy. Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed. 1 Timothy 6:17-19 We know that Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Hezekiah, Job and Jehoshaphat were very wealthy men of Bible times. So, if we know that money is a gift from God then the way we use money and the priority we give it in our lives is very important. What place does money have in your life? Is it the most important priority? No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will hold to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. Matthew 6:24 So what does it mean to serve money? Here are a few questions to ask yourself: Are you too busy working long hours to take time to read the Bible and pray? Do you put your career ahead of your familys needs? Do you make your decisions based on what it will cost or on what will please God? Does the thought of sacrificing money or career opportunities to do something for someone else frighten you? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, its time to take a close look at your priorities. So how do you make God a higher priority in your life? Do not let this Book of the Law (Bible) depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful wherever you go. Joshua 1:8 Let your character be free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself said, "I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you." Hebrews 13:5 Honor the Lord with your wealth. Proverbs 3:9 If we make God our priority he promises to make us prosperous and successful! Whoever trusts in his riches will fall but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf. Proverbs 11:28 Do not lay up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Matthew 6:19-21 We are surrounded by pressure to achieve success, to work harder, earn more money, buy a bigger house, a newer car But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. 1 Timothy 6:9 But let the brother of humble circumstances glory in his high position; and let the rich man glory in his humiliation, because like flowering grass he will pass away. For the sun rises with a scorching wind, and withers the grass; and its flowers fall off, and the beauty of its appearance is destroyed; so to the rich man in the midst of his pursuits we fade away. James 1:9-11 If we trust in God and try to follow His ways we know that... God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19A faithful man will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished. Proverbs 28:20 So do not worry, saying, "What shall we eat? Or "What shall we drink?" or "What shall we wear?" for the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:31-33 Jesus said to His disciples, "truly I say to you, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. "And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."
And when the disciples heard this, they were astonished and said, "Then who can be saved?" And looking upon them Jesus said to them, "with men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." Matthew 19:16-26 So check your priorities, and invest in an eternal future: Do not love the world, nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. And the world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God abides forever.
Chapter 8 Pride versus humility What exactly is pride? It is having an opinion that you are more important or superior than those around you. This pride can be in the mind of the person or is displayed in his or her behavior. What is humility? It is having a opinion that you are less important or inferior than those around you. This humility can be in the mind of the person or is displayed in his or her behavior. God talks about pride. Whoever slanders his neighbor in secret, him will I put to silence;
whoever has haughty eyes and a proud heart, him will I not endure. Psalm Ch.101:5 God also talks about humility. Has not my hand made all these things, and so they came into being?" declares the LORD. "This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word. Isaiah Ch.66:2 When you read through the Bible a common theme is that we must avoid pride and take on humility as part of our character. Romans chapter 12: For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you. verse 3 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. verse 10 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. verse 16 Pride lures us into living independently of God There is an incompatibility between blind arrogance and the presence of God in our heart. God isnt watching they say to themselves; hell never know!. Psalm 10:11 [1] The proud person depends on himself rather than on God. This causes Gods guiding influence to leave his life. When Gods presence is welcome, there is no room for pride. Pride can cut us off from God and others. To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else, Jesus told this parable: "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other menrobbers, evildoers, adulterersor even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.' "But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'God, have mercy on me, a sinner.' "I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." Luke Ch.18:9-14 The Pharisee in Jesus parable did not go to the temple to pray to God but to announce to all within earshot how good he was. The tax collector went recognizing his sin and begging for mercy. Self-righteousness is dangerous. It leads to pride, causes a person to despise others, and prevents him or her from learning anything from God. Dont let pride in your achievements cut you off from God. When is pride bad? Many people have different forms of pride. Some pride is regarded by God as being good and some as being bad. God sees pride as being bad when it is related to: a. pride in appearance We are not trying to commend ourselves to you again, but are giving you an opportunity to take pride in us, so that you can answer those who take pride in what is seen rather than in what is in the heart. 2 Corinthians Ch.5:12 b. pride in riches They were proud of their beautiful jewelry and used it to make their detestable idols and vile images. Therefore I will turn these into an unclean thing for them. Ezekiel Ch.7:20
Care needs to be taken to ensure we are not taking pride in riches By your great skill in trading you have increased your wealth, and because of your wealth your heart has grown proud. Ezekiel Ch.28:5 c. pride in comparing one with another Now, brothers, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the meaning of the saying, "Do not go beyond what is written." Then you will not take pride in one man over against another. 1 Corinthians Ch.4:6 Each one should test his own actions. Then he can take pride in himself, without comparing himself to somebody else, Galatians Ch.6:4 d. pride in things you have achieved Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; someone else, and not your own lips. Proverbs Ch.27:2 Ephraim boasts, "I am very rich; I have become wealthy. With all my wealth they will not find in me any iniquity or sin." Galatians Ch.6:4 e. boasting Your boasting is not good. Don't you know that a little yeast works through the whole batch of dough? 1 Corinthians Ch.5:6 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 1 Corinthians Ch.13:4 For everything in the worldthe cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and doescomes not from the Father but from the world. 1 John 2:16 Usually when God speaks about pride he is referring to this bad pride. This type of human pride has one overriding characteristic it is self-centred. When is pride good? Sometimes in the Bible pride is referred to as being good. God sees pride as being good when it is related to: a. pride in God My soul will boast in the LORD; let the afflicted hear and rejoice. Psalm 34:2 but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight," declares the LORD. Jeremiah Ch.9:24 Therefore, as it is written: "Let him who boasts boast in the Lord." 1 Corinthians Ch.1:31 b. pride in others as you have understood us in part, you will come to understand fully that you can boast of us just as we will boast of you in the day of the Lord Jesus. 2 Corinthians Ch.1:14 We are not trying to commend ourselves to you again, but are giving you an opportunity to take pride in us, so that you can answer those who take pride in what is seen rather than in what is in the heart. 2 Corinthians Ch.5:12 I have great confidence in you; I take great pride in you. I am greatly encouraged; in all our troubles my joy knows no bounds. 1 Corinthians Ch.7:4 I will boast about a man like that, but I will not boast about myself, except about my weaknesses. 2 Corinthians Ch.12:5 c. pride in self Each one should test his own actions. Then he can take pride in himself, without comparing himself to somebody else, Galatians Ch.6:4 The brother in humble circumstances ought to take pride in his high position. But the one who is rich should take pride in his low position, because he will pass away like a wild flower. James Ch.1:9-10 Pride in the work of God is praised in the Bible. It is okay to have a feeling of pleasure or pride in something well done for the work of God as long as you dont compare yourself against other people. Humility is essential for service to others People today are eager to raise their social status, whether by being with the right people, dressing for success, or driving the right car. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." Luke Ch.14:11 Whom do you try to impress? Rather than aiming for prestige, look for a place where you can serve. If God wants you to serve on a wider scale, he will invite you to take a higher place. Chapter 9 Relationships
Each one of us struggles at one time or another with our relationships. They can be a source of great joy and contentment, but they can also be frustrating and inadequate. Perhaps you argue with your husband, cant talk to your teenager, wish you had a better relationship with your parents, barely survive your toddlers temper tantrums or wish your neighbours were easier to get on with? You may wonder what the Bible would have to say about relationships, yet Gods advice is practical and relevant to us today. Being Angry Yes, it is ok to feel angry its what you do and how you handle it that matters: Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger Ephesians 4:26 A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Proverbs 15:1 Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for a mans anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. James 1:19-20 Parents Have you managed to make the transition from child and parent to friends, or is your relationship with your parents still a work in progress? A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish man despises his mother. Proverbs 15:20 Honor your father and mother which is the first commandment with a promise that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth. Ephesians 6:2-3 Fathers, do not exasperate your children, instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. Ephesians 6:4
Marriage Marriage was originally designed by God and the Bible is full of advice for the married, and those who would like to be: When one finds a worthy wife, her value is far beyond pearls. Her husband entrusting his heart to her has an unfailing prize. Proverbs 31:10-11 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. Ephesians 5:25
Children Raising children is a challenging role, full of joy and tears! Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from him. Psalm 127:3 Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it. Proverbs 22:6 Discipline your son, and he will give you peace; he will bring delight to your soul. Proverbs 29:17 The Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in. Proverbs 3:12 We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power and the wonders he has done. Psalm 78:4 Neighbours Relationships with neighbours can be difficult and frustrating, yet God offers clear advice to help resolve the conflict: Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. Colossians 3:13 A mans wisdom gives him patience: it is to his glory to overlook an offense. Proverbs 19:11 You have heard that it was said, "Love your neighbour and hate your enemy." But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:43-45
Gods love for us The most rewarding relationship of all is the one we can have with God through his son, Jesus Christ:
This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 1 John 4:9 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations. Psalm 100:5 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him. Psalm 103:11
CHAPTER 10 WHAT THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT LOVE Love is one of the fundamental parts of the Bible and as such it must be a central part of the believers life. Throughout the pages of the Bible the message of God is one of love and this is revealed in His forgiveness, patience, mercy, gentleness and kindness. Because the love of God is so great in the Bible it should come as no surprise that the greatest commandment in the Bible is this one:
Jesus said to him, You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Matthew 22:37-39 The unfortunate fact is that many people either ignore the law of love or they only partially obey it. Yet God is asking us for total commitment to this law. The love of God God has shown us great mercy and love. If we accept this, then we naturally want to show mercy and love to others. If we dont, then we are not living a truly Christian life. Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 1 John 4:7-11 God has given us great love even though we dont deserve it. In a similar fashion, we must give our love to others whether they deserve it or not.
The love of God is inexhaustible. Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good. His love endures forever. Psalm 136:1 (NIV) Throughout the Psalm the phrase His love endures forever is repeated. Gods love will never run out, because it flows from a well that will never run dry. In His love we will always see kindness, mercy and faithfulness. The love of God is forgiving. I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance. (Luke 15:7) I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance. Luke 15:7 We see the extraordinary love of God when we read that He tenderly searches for sinners and then with joy forgives them. This is the amazing love he has for each one of us. The love of God is beyond measure and is forever. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39 No matter what happens to us, no matter where we are, we can never be separated from the love of God. When the times are tough some people are driven away from God, when in fact this is the time that they should be coming to Him and seeking his immeasurable love for us. God tells us how great his love is so that we will feel totally secure in him. Indeed it is impossible to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. If we just think about Christs death we can see the proof of his unconquerable love.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16
The love of God is sacrificial His love is not self-centred. He loved us so dearly that he gave us the life of His Son the highest price that he could pay. Jesus, in turn, willingly gave his life so that we could seek reconciliation with God. In a similar manner, we must be willing to give up our own comfort and security so that others might join us in receiving Gods love. The love of Jesus The example of Jesus Christ is the one which we can look at and try to copy. The apostle Paul was humbled by the love of Christ: For in Christ Jesus . the only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. Galatians 5:6 Our love for others So what does the Bible give as guidelines for our love to other humans. Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 The society we live in confuses love and lust. Unlike lust, Gods kind of love is directed outward towards others and not inward toward ourselves. Gods love is completely unselfish. This type of love tends to go against what we are naturally inclined to do as we must give love and not expect anything in return.
The requirements for our love Love is not an option that we can either do or not do the Bible commands that we show it to not only the Lord God but also to those around us. It is critical for those living true Christianity: A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. John 13:34 The type of love required is of self-sacrifice and servanthood. It is one of selfless giving where we love not only friends but also enemies and persecutors. Love is the key to walking as a true Christian, because we cannot grow spiritually while we hate others. When we grow in our relationship with God we will grow in our relationships with others. Love is not an uncontrollable emotion. Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, 1 Corinthians 14:1 Love is a choice that we make. We can choose to be concerned with peoples wellbeing and treat them with respect, whether or not we feel affection toward them. If we make the choice to love others then God will assist us to express this love. Some people think that love is just a feeling - this is not correct. For love can also be expressed through your actions. My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. 1 John 3:18 The greatest act of love we can do Out of all the love we can give, the greatest act of love is to love God. Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is: Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one. And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first commandment. And the second, like it, is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these. John 12:29-31
CHAPTER 11 Gossip So what exactly is gossip? It is idle talk or rumor, especially about the personal or private affairs of others. It is most often made up of useless or spiteful tales and is almost always done behind the back of the subject of the gossip. The words of a gossip are like choice morsels (Proverbs 18:8)
Many of the magazines which can be bought at a newsagent are full of gossip. They tell of what the Hollywood stars are currently up to. Given the sales of these magazines it is obvious that gossip is a big seller.
Gossip is a problem for everyone because we all like to hear news and tell it others particularly what we call juicy news. The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to a man's inmost parts. Proverbs Ch.18:8 What does the Bible say about gossip? God has nothing good to say about gossip. a gossip separates close friends. Proverbs Ch.16:28 Gossip can keep believers out of the kingdom it is classified as a sin.
They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them. Romans Ch.1:29-32 If we love our neighbour, we will not tell stories about them or betray their trust. So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. Matthew Ch.7:12 With this verse in mind, we should stop gossiping for no one likes to be the subject of gossip and rumours. Gossip breaks down relationships Making up or spreading false reports was strictly forbidden by God. Do not pass along untrue reports. Do not cooperate with an evil man by affirming on the witness stand something you know is false. Exodus Ch.23:1 Gossip, slander, and false witnessing undermined families, strained neighbourhood cooperation, and made chaos of the justice system. Destructive gossip still causes problems. Even if you do not initiate a lie, you become responsible if you pass it along. Dont circulate rumours rather stop them. Gossip has lasting wounds Gossip is often more harmful and lasting than physical wounds. Telling lies about someone is as harmful as hitting him with an axe, or wounding him with a sword, or shooting him with a sharp arrow. Proverbs Ch.25:18 [1] Lying is vicious and can have permanent effects like those of a stab wound. Passing on a bit of gossip can be like stabbing the victim with a sword. Stay silent rather than gossip! Gossip is a waste of valuable time Keep yourself busy! It is at times when you are inactive when people start to gossip. As for younger widows, they get into the habit of being idle and going about from house to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also gossips and busybodies, saying things they ought not to. 1 Timothy 5:11-13 Yet we hear that some of you are living in laziness, refusing to work, and wasting your time in gossiping. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we appeal to such people we command them to quiet down, get to work, and earn their own living. 2 Thessalonians CH.3:11-12 [1] A lazy person who doesnt work ends up filling his or her time with less than helpful activities, like gossip. When we hear rumours and hearsay it is tantalizing and exciting to hear you feel like one of the insiders. But these same stories can pull people down. Rather than wasting time listening to these stories, look for a task, to do for Christ or for your family. Then start working on the task. This is a much more positive use of your time. How do you know whether you are gossiping? One hint as to whether you are gossiping may be how much you talk! A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid a man who talks too much. Proverbs Ch.20:19 When you are telling a story about someone ask yourself the following questions 1. How certain am I that the facts are correct? 2. Was the information given in confidence? 3. Have I checked the facts with the person involved? 4. Am I telling this story to help build up others in Christ? Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. Ephesians Ch.4:29
Chapter 12 What the bible say about fait So what exactly is faith? It is believing in the certainty of things that cannot be seen.
To be a believer and a Christian it is something which is absolutely necessary.
But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. Hebrews 11:6
God will reward those who cannot see him, and yet still show a strong desire to find him.
Possessing the characteristic of Faithfulness
You have heard the word Faithfulness used in conversation - this refers to someone who is reliable and loyal. This is the type of person who would stay with something no matter what happens. When you read about faith in the New Testament, it is usually referring to this type of loyalty.
This is the central point of what God wants loyalty and faithfulness are very important to him. He wants us to make a commitment to him and then never later on change our loyalty to something else.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, Galatians 5:22
The fruits of the spirit include the characteristic of faithfulness. If we have it, then it shows the godliness is growing in us.
What we cant see
When we talk about faith it is referring to someone who is certain about something without actually seeing it. As Jesus indicates, the more faith you have the more you can achieve.
So Jesus said to them, Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, Move from here to there, and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. Matthew 17:20
So nothing would be impossible for the man who had faith.
But it can be argued that if we have faith then we should be able to achieve anything we wish. But as John point out this depends on Gods will.
Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him. 1 John 5: 14-15
If Gods will allows it, then we can do amazing things with our faith. But we must always remember that faith will never allow us to change Gods determined will. However, we should always remember that without human faith many of the events in the Bible would not have happened.
Consider this story:
Then Naaman went with his horses and chariot, and he stood at the door of Elishas house. And Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored to you, and you shall be clean. But Naaman became furious, and went away and said, Indeed, I said to myself, He will surely come out to me, and stand and call on the name of the LORD his God, and wave his hand over the place, and heal the leprosy. Are not the Abanah and the Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them and be clean? So he turned and went away in a rage.
And his servants came near and spoke to him, and said, My father, if the prophet had told you to do something great, would you not have done it? How much more then, when he says to you, Wash, and be clean? So he went down and dipped seven times in the Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God; and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean. 2 Kings 5:9-14 Naaman did not want to wash in the dirty river Jordan, but because he had faith he tried and as a result was no longer a leper.
Copying faith As we have seen so far, faith is being sure about things that cannot be seen. But ofcourse when you think about it, faith itself cannot be seen. You cannot say that this person has certain amount of faith it cannot be measured. However faith can be seen by others when it affects how we behave. When we look at some people we can see that faith has changed their life. If we this then we should endeavour to copy what they have done.
that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises Hebrews 6:12
Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct. Hebrews 13:7
The same can apply to us. If we set a good example by showing faith then others will copy us.
Increasing faith
The Bible tells us that we must continually increase our faith.
But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 1:5-8
As an example, we are told that the believers who lived in the ancient city of Thessalonica had faith that was continually growing.
We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is fitting, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all abounds toward each other, 2 Thessalonians 1:3
So what is the secret to increasing faith. The answer is that the more confidence we have in God the more our faith will grow. We can gain more confidence in God through praying to him, through reading his word on a regular basis, through seeing God in action.
An example of seeing God in action maybe when we see one of our prayers answered, or we are aware of the guiding hand of God in some event in our life. These are the things which increase our faith. Blind faith? Some may say that it sounds like we are being asked to have blind faith i.e. faith without evidence. But this is certainly not the case. There is plenty of evidence that God gives us: a. evidence of his existence because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, Romans 1:19-20
Chapter 13 Modern day Idolatry
Idolatry is worshipping other things besides the one true God. Consistently throughout the Bible it is made very clear that idolatry is unacceptable.
In the times of the Bible, most people worshipped gods and goddesses made of stone, wood or sometimes precious metals. God condemns the worship of such objects. No matter what the idol is made of, it is still a lifeless object with no power or character. It definitely has no power to save us from our sins! Idolatry is not only foolish but is a major sin in the eyes of God.
Idolatry reduces God to a deity that can be manipulated
The worship of idols by people suggests they think they can get their own way by effectively side-stepping God and worshipping other gods.
So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, "Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes. Genesis Ch.35:2
Why did people have these idols (foreign gods)? In the time of Jacob, idols were sometimes seen as a good-luck charm. Some Israelites, even though they worshipped God, had idols in their homes. Jacob believed that idols should have no place in his household. He wanted nothing to divert his familys spiritual focus.
Idolatry worships the creature rather than the creator
How can intelligent people turn to idolatry? Idolatry begins when people reject what they know about God.
Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. Romans 1:22-23
Instead of looking to God as the creator and sustainer of life, idol worshippers see themselves as the centre of the universe. They soon invent gods that are convenient projections of their own plans and decrees. These gods may be wooden figures, but they may also be goals or things we pursue such as money, power or comfort. Whatever it is the main point is that idolaters worship the things God made rather than God himself.
Questions to ask your self:
Is there anything you feel you cant live without?
Is there any priority greater than God?
Do you have a dream you would sacrifice everything to realise?
Does God take first place?
Do you worship God or idols of your own making?
Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10
Modern day idolatry
In the 21st century, idolatry still exists except perhaps in some cases it is not as obvious it is more subtle. We can group modern day idolatry into three broad groups:
i Pagan religions of the modern age
There are some modern day religions with tens of millions of worshippers which base their religion around idol worship - they worship gods made out of wood and stone.
You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, Exodus Ch.20:5
ii Idols are anything that will take away our devotion to God.
A lot of time spent on a boat can make it a idol. If you spend a lot of time following the life of a movie star or rock star then maybe that is your idol. Another example, maybe spending a lot of time devoted to using and maintaining a recreational boat. This could make that boat your idol it is taking your time away from worshipping God.
iii Greed is idolatry
Greed is the wanting more of something. In this modern age of seeing advertising everywhere, greed is something which is likely to continue growing. Advertisers use such phrases as you deserve it or you need it. However, greed is like a cancer which eats into us the more we get, the more we want we are never satisfied!
The hunger for bigger, better and more possessions may not seem that bad to you. But it slowly creeps up on us and takes over our thoughts and actions. Forty years ago people were satisfied with the small black and white televisions, then in the 1970s and 1980s everyone had to have the larger colour television and now it is essential to have the 127 centimetre plasma television in your loungeroom!!
Yet greed is idolatry according to the Bible.
Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. Colossians Ch.3:5-6
Putting God first
So in the future, if we want to avoid idolatry, what do we need to do?
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirableif anything is excellent or praiseworthythink about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in meput it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. Philippians Ch.4:8-9
We need to put God first. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew Ch.6:33
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy... (Matthew Ch.6:19-21) "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew Ch.6:19-21
"Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. Matthew Ch.10:37-39
Chapter 14 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. Although youve pointed to Philippians 3:19 in your question, it might be more helpful to start answering this question by looking at Colossians 3:1-5. Paul discusses the same thing in this passage, a little more fully. His idea here is that once you become a Christian, you live in a new reality: If you have been raised with Christ (v1) In the Bible, Christianity isnt really about doing good things - it is about trusting Gods goodness. We are, however, often encouraged to do good things. But when this happens it is because we change when we become Christians. We have been raised with Christ and we are called on to live like it.
Set your minds on things that are above, not on earthly things, for you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God (v2-3)
Pauls thinking here is, why would you continue doing earthly things - why would you even continue thinking about them - if you have died and are now joined to Christ?! It just doesnt make any sense! What Paul means by earthly things is clarified in the next few verses:
Put to death therefore whatever is in you that is earthly: sexual immorality, unhelpful thoughts, uncontrollable passions, evil desires, greed (v5)
Paul doesnt ordinarily use the term earthly to mean everyday things that we do or find in this world (as opposed to heaven): football, computer games, friends and family all have their place. What Paul means by earthly is sinful things - things that are contrary to your new nature as someone who has died to sin and been raised with Christ. Sometimes ordinary things which are good in their own right can become sinful if we let them get in the road of our relationship with God. If we, say, value football over church or if we play computer games when we never read the Bible. In this case these earthly things really are sinful.
It is the same in Philippians 3:19. To set your mind on earthly things means to desire above everything else something other than your relationship with God. Paul reminds us in the very next verse of the same truth that we learned from Colossians. We are to value our relationship with God above everything else because our citizenship is in heaven - we have changed. If we are Christians we no longer belong to the earth, we belong to heaven.
I think you will now see the answer to your question. Paul means all the time. Every second, of every day all of your life. You are a citizen of heaven, you are raised with Christ - thats the wonderful truth. Now live like it!
Chapter 15 Temptation The Bible challenges us to control and guide our desires towards doing good rather than evil. We all must take responsibility for our own thoughts. As a result, we must learn to control our thoughts.
The path to sin
Sin is disobedience of Gods commandment. There is a pathway that can lead to someone committing a sin against God. This pathway is:
1st Temptation
2nd Sin
3rd Death
This is explained very well in the following passage:
Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. Let no one say when he is tempted, I am tempted by God; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full- grown, brings forth death.
Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. James Ch.1:12-16
We are being told to endure the trials we face in our day to day lives and focus on those things which God commands. This ofcourse requires us to exclude the things that he forbids. This process requires us to overcome temptation. To please God, the believer must think and act in the correct ways when they are initially faced with the opportunity to do wrong.
The cause of temptation
There is a ongoing battle between good and evil in each one of us.
The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? Jeremiah Ch.17:9 NIV
This ongoing battle is also mentioned elsewhere:
For from within, out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and make a man 'unclean.' " Mark Ch.7:21-23 NIV
When we get evil thoughts we get it from within ourselves. Someone or something else does not put these thoughts into our mind. So to overcome temptation we must firstly recognize the source of the sinful thinking. We are responsible for our own thoughts. So a believer in God must control these thoughts and always try to do good.
One thing we need to remember is that what one person may see as a temptation may have no effect on another person. We all react differently to the things around us.
Help in overcoming temptations
The three steps to overcoming temptation
There are three steps involved in overcoming temptation:
Step one: Watch
Work out what are your major weaknesses in temptation. Once you understand these then you can be especially prepared to fight temptation when you in this situation.
Step two: Run
We are to avoid putting ourselves into situations where we face temptation. As matter of fact, we are told to run from any situation where we might be tempted!!
Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 2 Timothy Ch.2:22
Step three: Pray
We can go to God to help us with overcoming temptation. We can ask him through prayer to keep us away from influences and environments that we find tempting. In other words, led us away from circumstances that will make it difficult to serve God.
God allows us to be tempted because he wants to test our faith and desire to serve him. But he stops the temptations becoming too much for us. So whenever we find ourselves in a difficult situation of temptation, you can overcome it by seeking Gods help.
To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen. Jude 24-25
Christ can also help when we are faced with temptation.
Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of deaththat is, the devil and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham's descendants. For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. Hebrews Ch.2:14-18
Christ never sinned but he was tempted.
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we areyet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Hebrews Ch.4:14-16
Keeping our minds pure
We need to avoid ungodly environments where we will be faced with temptations.
Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. Psalm 1:1-2 NIV
So we need to replace ungodly thinking with godly thinking. The best way we can overcome temptation is by filling our minds with the things of God.
We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Corinthians Ch.10:5 NIV
Just as a conquering army takes captives, so the faithful believer must take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ.
If we learn to control our minds and think only about good things, then we can fully control temptation.
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable- if anything is excellent or praiseworthythink about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in meput it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. Philippians Ch.4:8-9
Chapter 16 Team work Teamwork happens when a group of individual people are brought together to achieve a common purpose or goal. The needs of the group become more important than the needs of the individual. So for team work to work efficiently, each person need to put aside their own individual needs so as to achieve the objective of the group. When the people in the group work with each other this is known as teamwork.
For teams to work effectively, in other words, achieve the set goals they must make sure they follow some fundamental principles of teamwork:
Cooperation with each other set aside personal differences
For a team to run smoothly the members musts work together in an effective manner. This means putting aside personal differences so that overall aim can be achieved. They need to cooperate and collaborate with each other. If there are conflicts then these need to be resolved by using principles as set out in the Bible.
What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you? James Ch.4:1 NIV
Many people, including some believers of God, live only to make a good impression on others or maybe they live to just please themselves. This type of selfishness can cause problems when working in a group. Paul therefore encourages the believers to have spiritual unity with each other and then work as one for the main purpose.
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Philippians Ch.2:3-4
Believers need to work as a team, caring for the problems of others as though they were our own problems. With this Christ like attitude the team of Gods workers will experience unity.
Cooperation with each other two is better than one
As we go through life we learn many things. In the same way, the believer, as he reads through the Bible, learns wisdom. He may take this wisdom and apply it in his own life so as to make his life more meaningful. However, the Bible says that he shouldnt keep all this information to himself.
Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: if one falls down, his friend can help him up.
But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!
Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Ecclesiastes Ch.4:9-12
The thought of the man without dependants toiling pointlessly, suggests the thought that "two are better than one". Don't keep all your gains for yourselfshare, be a team man and how much fuller your life will be!
In the first century, it was a Jewish custom to travel in pairs, especially at night. To work in pairs is better, for they each can encourage and strengthen the other when they become downcast or depressed among strangers. Also one might take the glory to himself; and there might be a loss of love for the work through jealousy or dissension, as in the case of John Mark.
"Two are better than one" appeared to be the guideline for the work of the Apostles in the first century. Two disciples were sent to find the colt. Peter and John were sent to prepare the Passover and were later sent together to Samaria. Paul and Barnabas were sent by the Church to Antioch and later when they had their dissension, each took a companion.
And He called the twelve to Himself, and began to send them out two by two, Mark Ch.6:7
So teamwork was a vital part of the work of the apostles in the first century because of its numerous advantages. For this to work, it required cooperation between the two men.
Dedicated commitment to the objectives
The members of the team need to give full participation to the objectives of the team. Everyone must feel that the goals are important and that they are fully committed to achieving them. Each member must understand that their contribution will be valuable to the team meeting its goals.
God has given all believers an important responsibility of making disciples in all countries.
Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew Ch.28:18-20
To achieve this objective involves preaching, teaching, nurturing, giving, administering and numerous other tasks. To try and achieve this objective by ourselves would be extremely difficult. But God has asked us to work as a team for he knows this is the best way to be successful.
Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip Gods people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. Ephesians Ch.4:11-12 New Living Translation
As a team each person has his own special abilities that he (or she) can offer. Some of us can do one task whereas someone else can do another task. Together the united team can serve God more effectively than the individual team members can alone.
It is a human trait to overestimate what we can do as a individual and also to underestimate what can be done as a group. But as believers are part of the body of Christ, there is a lot more that can be achieved together than can ever be done alone.
Dedicated commitment to the objectives the example of Paul
At the time when the apostle Paul was writing, ships were powered by sail and by oar. Some ships had two, even three banks of oars. These vessels were known as biremes or triremes, but there was one ship called the Syracusa which had twenty banks of oars ten on each side. It was built for Gerone II of Syracuse, and was a fearsome structure with the capacity to transport a whole army of soldiers. Mathematicians have calculated that it needed two thousand men to pull the 800 oars. It is believed that the longest oar was 84 feet long, and needed at least four men to operate it! We can imagine what an impressive ship this was. Where do you think it was built? In Corinth in about 200 BC.
Could it be that Paul knew about the building of this gargantuan slave-ship, and therefore used the analogy of the under-rower to describe to the Corinthians his own service, and theirs? The apostle was content to describe his own work as like that of one of the men at the bottom of a ship, operating his single oar. He knew that on his own he could only flail his oar uselessly in the sea. He stood no chance of moving the vessel on his own; he needed others to assist him. One man rowing on his own would be no use; two thousand rowing out of step would not be much better. But all two thousand pulling together would provide the necessary momentum and drive. Teamwork is what was needed.
Paul was therefore an under-rower in his Masters vessel. Christ is the captain of his and our salvation; he controls the vessels speed and direction, and through him we shall reach our final destination.
But Paul also recorded a stern warning, again written in terms associated with the analogy of the team of rowers. Two men in Ephesus, Hymenus and Alexander, had chosen not to pull with the rest, and had made shipwreck of their faith, threatening to affect others too.
Timothy, my son, I give you this instruction in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by following them you may fight the good fight, holding on to faith and a good conscience. Some have rejected these and so have shipwrecked their faith. Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme. 1 Timothy Ch.1:19-20
We have to learn to put our faith in the captain, and pull together in united service. Yet it is much easier to sit back, considering others to be Gods stewards, and not ourselves. Paul was certainly the steward of the Gentiles, and the Lord Jesus served his Master, even unto death on the tree.
We read of the various tasks allocated in the New Testament churches, and see them reflected in our own organisation. But we need to realise that service is a duty which falls on all disciples without exception. The parable of the talents is very familiar, but in Luke 12, the Master blesses the wise and faithful steward whom he had found working diligently when he returned without warning. Because he had the oversight of Gods house, the faithful and wise steward was always working, while watching and waiting for his Masters return.
The team must be coordinated by a leader
The leader or leaders would help coordinate the team. This would help it achieve the goals it was aiming for.
Solomon was example of someone who knew the advantages of team work. Gifted by God, Solomon was to build a House (temple) for God in Jerusalem and was keen to begin by laying its foundations. First, he reorganised some aspects of the Kingdom and then he proceeded to build up a team of workmen, from Israel and elsewhere, to get the great project underway. There was a lot to be done.
Having reorganised both the civil service and the tribal boundaries, to increase efficiency and to ensure that the nation could afford the capital expenditure programme he had in mind for God, Solomon turned his attention to organising a large workforce. For the project required civil engineering, complex building construction, and fine artwork. To do all these well enough for God required the involvement of an international team of labourers and the employment of skilled craftsmen.
After some time, a picture of the task force was beginning to become clear. Jew and Gentile were going to work together to fell and transport the timber. Solomons levy drafted in a huge number of labourers to work a month at a time, with a two months break before they began another stint of felling duties. The well-established forests of Lebanon must have been alive with people from time to time, whenever the weather made felling and logging practical, and whenever the sea was calm enough to let the log rafts1 be safely floated down from Lebanon to Jaffa, and thence be dragged or carted up to Jerusalem. Teamwork was of the essence, for the record says that: King Solomon conscripted laborers from all Israelthirty thousand men. He sent them off to Lebanon in shifts of ten thousand a month, so that they spent one month in Lebanon and two months at home. Adoniram was in charge of the forced labor. Solomon had seventy thousand carriers and eighty thousand stonecutters in the hills, as well as thirty-three hundred foremen who supervised the project and directed the workmen. 1 Kings Ch.5:13-16 NIV
Chapter 17 loneliness
Loneliness has to be experienced to be understood and it is by no means peculiar to those who live alone. It is possible to be very lonely indeed amidst a crowd of people. It is also one of the trials that many of us have to face at some time in our lives.
A sympathetic ear devoid of impatience; a little understanding of the problems of loneliness; an act of kindness and loveall warm the heart of the lonely one. These things help to make life easier, but the problem of being lonely remains.
A person can feel lonely even in a crowd of people
Jesus must have experienced loneliness on many occasions. He knew the warmth of family life, but preparation for his ministry and service to his Father had to come first in his life. This dedication to his Father offended his family at times and drew him apart from them. This is evident when his mother and brethren waited without, hoping to see him, but Jesus, indicating his disciples, said, "Behold my mother and my brethren". In spite also of the closeness to him of his constant companions, the disciples, they were far from understanding fully his purpose and sacrifice.
During the last few days of his life, Jesus' loneliness increased. When he needed them most, his friends left him. At the last supper his disciples contended as to who should be accounted the greatest, and Judas departed to betray him. Fearful of what should become of them, the disciples fled when Jesus was taken by the soldiers, thus fulfilling the Master's prophecy that they would be scattered as sheep without a shepherd. The final ordeal of the cross was before Jesus.
So with all this loneliness how did Jesus cope?
Jesus gained strength throughout his ministry by his quiet communion with God. We cannot achieve the closeness of Jesus to God, but we can turn often to God in prayer, gaining strength in time of need.
When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. Matthew Ch.14:13
Presence of Jesus
Of all human experiences, one of the most poignant is that of being separated from those we hold dear. To take leave of one we love is to experience an acute sense of lossa feeling of sadness and of lonelinessthe intensity of which varies with the strength of our regard for the one who is going away.
What then, we may ask, must have been the feelings of the disciples of Jesus when, after he had led them as far as to Bethany, their Lord blessed them and was parted from them and carried up into heaven? Surely, their sense of loss must have been more intense than anything we have experienced.
If we have ever reasoned along these lines, we shall be surprised to discover that in point of fact the disciples' feelings on this memorable occasion were quite otherwise. The Gospel records of the Ascension betray no sense of loss. On the contrary, to quote from Luke's account, when they had witnessed the Ascension of their Lord the disciples "returned to Jerusalem with great joy: and were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God." How is this remarkable paradox to be explained ? How is it that whereas we are downcast and sad when we have taken leave of a loved one, the eleven, in apparently similar circumstances, were able to rejoice? There is only one possible explanation: the disciples did not believe that in any real sense they had been separated from their Lord. They were, in fact, filled with an overwhelming sense of his presence. Jesus was gradually training them to understand that he was present everywhere.
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew Ch.28:19-20
For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them." Matthew Ch.18:20
Presence of God
Loneliness does not necessarily mean absence of other persons, it is more likely to be lack of affinity of mind. Satisfaction of heart is not experienced in a crowd, but in the consciousness of someone who is one with us in thought and aspiration. Though mankind are bound closer together than ever by the inventions that enter every home and land simultaneously, yet loneliness of heart is just as possible as before.
Companionship is more real in the realm of the spirit than that of the senses. It is the spiritual presence or companionship of the Divine that gives radiance to a man's countenance, stedfastness to his faith, and love and joy to his heart. It was the blessing offered to the Children of Israel that shepherded them through the wilderness when they had left Egypt for the Promised hand. Moses said, "Show me Thy way that I may know Thee, and the reply came: "My presence shall go with thee and I will give thee rest."
The modern Children of the Covenant are assured of a triumphant end to their pilgrimage in the same promise echoed ages after, through the words of the Good Shepherd :
"If a man love me, he will keep my words and my Father will love him and we will come unto him and make our abode with him. For such a manall things abound !
God is present everywhere so there is no need to feel lonely.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Psalm 23:4
Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory. Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds. Psalm 73:23- 26, 28
Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you." Hebrews Ch.13:5

We all need human relationships.
The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." Genesis Ch.2:18
CHAPTER 18 LUCK What does it mean to be lucky?
The dictionary describes luck as random, when things happen by chance. Things do seem to happen by chance sometimes...
The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favour to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all. Ecclesiastes 9:11
An athlete can fall during a race, an investor can loose their money when a business fails, a friend can be diagnosed with cancer, while a criminal may escape without being punished.
Equally, good things can happen; people fall in love, cures for diseases are discovered, a job application is successful but is it all really just luck? Or, is God really in control?
Good luck
God doesnt promise us good luck, in fact the word luck is never mentioned in the Bible. There are no random or chance happenings with God in control. God has a purpose for this world and there is no event in our lives that is not in some way a part of that plan.
I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things. Isaiah 45:7
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28-29
The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good. Proverbs 15:3
The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD. Proverbs 16:33
Perhaps instead of wishing our friends "good luck" it would be much better to say "God bless you"
The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you, the Lord turn His face towards you and give you peace. Numbers 6:24-26
Success
When we wish someone "good luck" dont we really mean that we wish them success, happiness, good health, happy families, contentment and other good things?
That may not seem like a bad thing at all, but it is so easy to let money be the top priority in our lives
Now listen, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to this, or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money." Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, "If it is the Lords will, we will live and do this or that." James 4:13
We are surrounded by pressure to achieve success, to work harder, earn more money, buy a bigger house, a newer car
But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. 1 Timothy 6:9
God wants us to trust in Him, not in money;
Whoever trusts in his riches will fall but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf. Proverbs 11:28
The LORD makes poor and makes rich; He brings low and lifts up. He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the beggar from the ash heap, to set them among princes and make them inherit the throne of glory. For the pillars of the earth are the Lord's, and He has set the world upon them. He will guard the feet of His saints, but the wicked shall be silent in darkness. For by strength no man shall prevail. 1 Samuel 2:7-9
If we trust in God and try to follow His ways
God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19
who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us Ephesians 3:20
Gods word, the Bible, teaches us His way to find happiness.
Do not let this Book of the Law (Bible) depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful wherever you go. Joshua 1:8
Gambling
You may know of people who have lost their homes or their fortunes or their families by gambling, Gambling seems to offer a way to get money quickly and easily but the Bible offers good advice;
Dishonest money dwindles away, but he who gathers money little by little makes it grow. Proverbs 13:11
The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. 1 Timothy 6:10
A faithful man will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished. Proverbs 28:20
Starting over
Jesus told a parable about a rich young man who gambled away all his inheritance and everything that he had. He was so desperate that he found a job feeding pigs and so hungry that he would eat some of the pigs food. You can read about it in Luke 15:11-32.
The young man was afraid to go back to his fathers house but when he did he was welcomed with open arms. God is like the young mans father, Hes waiting for us to get our priorities right, and willing to forgive us our mistakes if we repent.
The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. Matthew 10:29
We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they are good for us-they help us learn to endure. And endurance develops strength of character in us, and character strengthens our confident expectation of salvation. And this expectation will not disappoint us. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love. Romans 5:3-5
CHAPTER 19 GUILT What are we feeling when we experience guilt? We have a feeling of responsibility or remorse for some offense, crime, or wrong. This offense, crime or wrong can be real or imagined.
In the context of the Bible, people may feel guilty when they have sinned.
What is sin?
The entire plan of God revolves around the concept of obedience.
Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obeywhether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? Romans Ch.6:16 NIV
For the believer in God, obedience is critical. God loves obedience but hates sin. So what does God mean by sin? Sin means to be disobedient to God. If a person is sinful then he is full of disobedience.
Why does God hate sin? Because if we make a decision to disobey him then we reject all the things he stands for truth, love, patience, justice, faithfulness, mercy and so on. When we sin we reject God himself.
The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. Romans Ch.8:6-8 NIV
You are so proud of knowing the law, but you dishonor God by breaking it. Romans Ch.2:23 New Living Translation
God hates sin so much that he has stated that all sin will lead to death.
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans Ch.6:23 NIV
God wants each one of us to replace sin with obedience. We need to learn to hate sin like God does.
Guilt and sin
The Bible shows us that our sins distance us from our God. This can happen when we may feel guilty because we have problems overcoming certain sins. We may find it difficult even to want to overcome some sins. We feel we cannot face God like this. Yet whatever form that sin takes, the Good Shepherd knows all his sheep by name, and he is, even now, seeking every last one of us.
I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd. John Ch.10:14-16
If we have not made enough time for Gods word in our busy lives, our love for Gods ways can weaken firstbefore we actually fall into a sin. If we allow that love and respect to cool, we lay ourselves wide open to temptation. The more we desire sin, the further we are distanced from God. When at last we realise it, we find we are miles away from Him.
Sometimes we realise only slowly how far we have distanced ourselves from our God, as little by little sin eats away at our hope. Sometimes the feeling of distance from God is brought home to us suddenly and sharply. Nothing will bring that distance home to us more deeply than the subject of death: the stark illustration of the wages of sinthe difference between light and darkness, life and no life. In the face of death, we cannot deceive ourselves into thinking we can serve two masters! I choose God and life, or sin and death. The choice is entirely my own.
The result of sin is death
If we do feel trapped in a state of mind that desires sin, the beginning of turning back to God is to be honest with ourselves, and admit to that desirethat is better than being blind to the fact, deceiving ourselves! Sin is deceitfulit does not appear to us in its true form. It deceives us into thinking we can serve two masters. How long halt ye between two opinions? asked Elijah. At any time we are either serving our own desires or serving God. Both thought patterns cannot be in charge at the same time. When our mind has been open to wrong dependencies or thought patterns without resistance, we have been closing our mind to Gods word and its guidance. We have to reverse this process, shutting our mind to the sinful desires and opening it to Gods word. The body knows what it likesour mind of the flesh knows what it wants, and it will try every trick in the book to get it. Thankfully, God has given us His Book .
The Bible Our Sword
While the body knows what it likes , Gods word shows us what we need . The battle is an inward one, the arena is our mind, the Bible is our sword. If we allow Gods word into our mind, it does not leave us as it finds us: we must make a choice. Either we harden our hearts further, or we turn back to Him. We can remain distanced, without hope; or we can try hard to draw closer to Him, determined to try to respect His ways and appreciate the wisdom of them.
How can we regain our lost ground? How can we find our way back?
And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. Jeremiah Ch.29:13
We must show our Father in heaven that we want to find our way back to Him and His ways, that we will persevere, that we will never give up.
But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. Hebrews Ch.11:6
It is not easy to turn back: we can feel so entrenched. We may try to justify or excuse our sins, we may even miss them! We may not be able to find in ourselves any desire for the right ways - all we feel is a longing for the wrong ways. We must strengthen our love and respect for Gods wisdom, through effectively reading Gods word. Nothing can help us moreyet straight away we hit a problem!
Difficulty Reading or Praying
When at last we admit that we have been turning a deaf ear to Gods warnings in His word, it can feel as if, now that we want to, we cannot hear Him. As if He were saying, Right then, so you didnt want to listen to mewell, for a time you wont be able to. We do not here suggest our Father would have that attitude, but to us at the time, in a turmoil of mixed emotions, it may seem like it. How can we make our way forward?
What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost! I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance. Luke Ch.15:3-7
That hundredth sheep had got itself into a position where it could not get itself homeit could only admit that it was lost and cry for help. At that point the Good Shepherd came looking for it and carried it home rejoicing. In our need for help, we must keep trying to pray, faltering as we may be.
The Good Shepherd comes to us through Gods word. Keep trying to glean any help we can from reading our Bibleour daily readings, a book of the Bible, a chapter, a versefilling up with the spiritual food we must have been lacking.
I know, O LORD, that a man's life is not his own; it is not for man to direct his steps. Jeremiah Ch.10:23
We dont have it naturally in us to think as God teaches us. We constantly have to input Gods wisdom by reading His word. Nothing else can fight sin. We shall begin to accept the way the Bible describes our sins and stop trying to justify them. This can be a frightening time.
We may feel such a great heaviness that we did not love Gods ways as we thought we did. We may feel guilty that we have let God down. We can pass through many or all of these feelings and later they may leave us with another guilt to contend with on top of our initial problem! Keep going back to the Shepherd, crying out to him, reading his answers in the word. The answers are there!
Our difficulties are compounded because thoughts and feelings can be so mixed. Sin deceives, and one of the ways it deceives is by presenting evil along with good. While our heart deceives us, God knows the heart of man.
Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. Matthew Ch.10:16
When we continue to pray and read Gods word, we not only gain strength in resisting sin, we also become more aware of sin.
Sin deceives us by pandering to our short-term satisfaction. Satisfying our own wants above obedience to God is false security, numbing our minds to our far greater long-term needs.
Desire for Gods ways can be so weak; the desire to sin so strong. But Jesus suffered long and terribly out of his and the Fathers love for us. That was done, not for the you and me who are being obedient, but for the you and me who have walked along dangerous paths, who have placed ourselves where we should not be. It is then that God still loves us and pleads with us to turn back, as a sheep to its shepherd, as a child to its Fatherbecause He first loved us while we were yet sinners.
God is not asking us to show Him that we have suddenly become immune to sinHe asks us to show Him that we genuinely want to turn from sin, terribly hard though this can be for us in our sinfulness. As Gods word changes our minds, and we learn the right paths, slowly, surely, the warmth and closeness of hope and trust can begin to come back. Day by day we can show our Father that we want to understand and respect His ways, and that we are never going to give up.
On our Guard against Sin
Some things in our life just fan the flames so that we want more.
We must be on our guard constantlyour mind so easily slips into wrong thought patterns, and these are so strong. Certain things make it far harder for us: the company we keep, the music we listen to, the words we sing along to, clothes we wear, films we watch, things we read, being too busy or too tired to remember Gods ways in our day: any of these can encourage our wants and fan the flames so that we want more. We must try to avoid situations which make it harder for us, not because we are so righteous, but because we are so weak!
All that Jesus passed through to open the way to our forgiveness can mean more to us than it has ever done, and can move us very much. When we confess our sins, and try hard to turn from them, to pass from sin to repentance, God is just to forgive us our sins.
How much it means to us to know that the Lord Jesus took all our griefs and all our sorrows, and died that we might live! We know that,
The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy . . . He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us. Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him. Psalm 103:8 , 1013 Let us turn to God in our need and ask Him to forgive us and to help us through His word to find our way back to Him.
CHAPTER 20 Honesty
Is it important to be honest? In todays society honesty and integrity are difficult to find. Society rationalises dishonesty it is considered as something necessary to get by in this world.
Lying destroys integrity
Lies will soon be detected and the liar is deceiving himself to think otherwise.
A case study of a liar taken from 1 Samuel Ch.15: 1-14
Consider this incident that took place about 3,000 years ago. It concerns the Israelite King Saul and the prophet Samuel: Samuel said to Saul, "I am the one the LORD sent to anoint you king over his people Israel; so listen now to the message from the LORD. This is what the LORD Almighty says: 'I will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt. Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy everything that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.' "
So Saul summoned the men and mustered them at Telaimtwo hundred thousand foot soldiers and ten thousand men from Judah.
Then Saul attacked the Amalekites all the way from Havilah to Shur, to the east of Egypt. He took Agag king of the Amalekites alive, and all his people he totally destroyed with the sword. But Saul and the army spared Agag and the best of the sheep and cattle, the fat calves and lambseverything that was good. These they were unwilling to destroy completely, but everything that was despised and weak they totally destroyed.
Then the word of the LORD came to Samuel: "I am grieved that I have made Saul king, because he has turned away from me and has not carried out my instructions." Samuel was troubled, and he cried out to the LORD all that night.
Early in the morning Samuel got up and went to meet Saul, but he was told, "Saul has gone to Carmel. There he has set up a monument in his own honor and has turned and gone on down to Gilgal." When Samuel reached him, Saul said, "The LORD bless you! I have carried out the LORD's instructions." But Samuel said, "What then is this bleating of sheep in my ears? What is this lowing of cattle that I hear?"
Saul thought that he had won a great victory over the Amalekites, but God saw it as a great failure because Saul had disobeyed him and then lied to Samuel about the results of the battle. Saul may have thought his lie wouldnt be detected, or that what he did was not wrong. Saul was deceiving himself.
Truth stands the test of time; lies are soon exposed. Proverbs 12:19 [3]
People who tell a lie usually find they have to tell further lies to cover the first one. Eventually the lie upon lie become a large out of control problem towering over them!
Dishonest people soon begin to believe the lies they build around themselves. Then they start to lose the ability to tell the difference between truth and lies. By believing your own lies you are deceiving yourself. But you also alienate yourself from God, and you lose credibility in all your relationships with other people. If you lie to other people then their perception of your integrity drops to a low level. In the long run, honesty always wins out.
Above all, my brothers, do not swearnot by heaven or by earth or by anything else. Let your "Yes" be yes, and your "No," no, or you will be condemned. James 5:12
A person with a reputation for exaggeration or lying often cant get anyone to believe him on his word alone. You should never become like that. Always be honest so that others will believe your simple yes or no. By avoiding lies, half-truths, and omissions of the truth, you will become known as a trustworthy person.
Lies can lead to injustice
When you want to please or impress someone, it is tempting to lie to make yourself look good. You may think it is easier to tell the other person what they want to hear. Sometimes telling the truth can lead to someone doing something terrible to you. Obeying God (not telling lies), doesnt always protect us from evil consequences. Obedience may, in fact, provoke them. But it is better to suffer from mans displeasure than from Gods wrath.
Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Matthew 10:28
If you are ridiculed for being honest, remember that this can be a sign that you indeed doing what is right in Gods eyes
Lying undermines your unity with others
Lying to those you associate with (friends, relations, work colleagues, etc) disrupts unity by creating conflict and destroying trust.
Stop lying to each other; tell the truth, for we are parts of each other and when we lie to each other we are hurting ourselves. Ephesians Ch.4:25 [3]
There are many cases where deceit and honesty have ruined families. A family is only as strong as the level of honesty between its members.
Different levels of dishonesty
Quite often people argue that white lies (small-scale dishonesty) is not a problem like full lying. The Bible does not say there is any difference.
No one who practices deceit will dwell in my house; no one who speaks falsely will stand in my presence. Psalm 101:7
Jesus says that deceit is one of many evil things which will defile someone.
"What comes out of a man is what makes him 'unclean.' For from within, out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. Mark 7:20-22
Bribery
Sometimes you hear of a person paying money to someone else for a favour. This is what is known as bribery. God does not want this to happen.
LORD, who may dwell in your sanctuary? Who may live on your holy hill? He whose walk is blameless and who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from his heart and has no slander on his tongue, ..and does not accept a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things will never be shaken. Psalm 15:1-5
Honesty and God
God makes it very clear in various parts of the Bible that telling lies is a sin.
The LORD detests lying lips, but he delights in men who are truthful. Proverbs Ch.12:22
Dishonest actions are also criticised by God.
" 'Do not use dishonest standards when measuring length, weight or quantity. Use honest scales and honest weights, an honest ephah [1] and an honest hin. [2] I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt. Leviticus Ch.19:35-36
Liars will not be allowed in the kingdom of God.
Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood. Revelation Ch.22:15
There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,
a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers. Proverbs Ch.6:16-19
God asks us to have a character which upholds the highest standards of honesty. We can display this on a daily basis by being open and honest with each other.
The hours in the above example would vary from person to person but I think you get the idea! What are you doing with those 43 hours left over your spare time where you are free to choose what you do.
There are numerous activities which we could do in our spare time. Some of these activities take us towards God and others take us away from God. What is the Bibles advice on how we use our spare time?
Be very careful, then, how you livenot as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Ephesians Ch.5:15-16
Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. 2 Timothy Ch.2:16
(All the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there, spent their time doing nothing but talking about and listening to the latest ideas.) Acts Ch.17:21
Using our spare time
The Bible encourages the believer to make the best use of his time.
Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Colossians Ch.4:5
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirableif anything is excellent or praiseworthythink about such things. Philippians Ch.4:8
Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for it is now that God favors what you do. Always be clothed in white, and always anoint your head with oil. Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun all your meaningless days. For this is your lot in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun. Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom. Ecclesiastes Ch.10:18
Wasting time
In our spare time it may be tempting to become lazy and do nothing. But God warns us against laziness.
Besides, they get into the habit of being idle and going about from house to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also gossips and busybodies, saying things they ought not to. 1 Timothy Ch.5:13
In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers, to keep away from every brother who is idle and does not live according to the teaching you received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone's food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to make ourselves a model for you to follow. For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: "If a man will not work, he shall not eat."
We hear that some among you are idle. They are not busy; they are busybodies. Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the bread they eat. And as for you, brothers, never tire of doing what is right. 2 Thessalonians Ch.3:6-13
The Bible encourages us to use our spare time working hard.
Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order that they may provide for daily necessities and not live unproductive lives. Titus Ch.3:14
We each have finite time to use - this is why it is important to use it effectively. Entertainment
When people have spare time they usually look to entertainment to fill it. The entertainment usually turned to is movies, television, video games, magazines, etc. A large portion of these types of entertainment is full of immorality, violence and other behaviour which goes directly against the type of behaviour that God asked of us.
The Bible says that our leisure times should be spent profitably.
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 1 Corinthians Ch.10:31
Life is here to enjoy!
A lot of people think that living a life according to the principles of God is not enjoyable. This is a long way from the reality of the situation. There are many verses in the Bible which make it clear that God does want us to enjoy ourselves.
But may the righteous be glad and rejoice before God; may they be happy and joyful. Psalms 68:3
I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live. That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toilthis is the gift of God. Ecclesiastes Ch.3:12-13
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Philippians Ch.4:4 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 1 Timothy Ch.6:17
Chapter 21 Blasphemy God requires us to show him honour, reverence and great respect. Blasphemy is treating God with contempt. We must be careful how we act and how we speak.
There are a number of ways in which people can blaspheme:
Misusing or profaning Gods name
Forsaking God
Worshipping other gods
Sinning defiantly
The common theme here is disrespect for God. So any action that involves deliberate disrespect for God is blasphemy.
Misusing or profaning Gods name
Gods name and his Son Jesus name have very deep spiritual meanings. When we speak of God we are touching upon every aspect of His wonderful purpose of love and truth. That Gods Name should be used in vain as a mild expletive or expression of exasperation, is therefore one of the most insulting things a man can do to his Maker.
You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. Exodus Ch.20:7
Do not blaspheme God or curse the ruler of your people. Exodus Ch.22:28
Do not swear falsely by my name and so profane the name of your God. I am the LORD. Leviticus Ch.19:12
Do not profane my holy name. I must be acknowledged as holy by the Israelites. I am the LORD, who makes you holy Leviticus Ch.22:32
Because of this anyone who wants to please God and honour Him will make every effort not to use Gods name lightly. If you have blasphemed his name in the past then a heartfelt prayer to God for help to break this habit will help.
God expects his people to respect him, acknowledge him as holy and to worship Him with great respect.
It is the LORD your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him. Deuteronomy Ch.13:4
Tell Aaron and his sons to treat with respect the sacred offerings the Israelites consecrate to me, so they will not profane my holy name. I am the LORD. Leviticus Ch22:2
You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being. Revelation Ch.4:11
Forsaking God
Therefore, son of man, speak to the people of Israel and say to them, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: In this also your fathers blasphemed me by forsaking me: Ezekiel Ch.20:27
Worshipping other gods
I will set my face against that man and I will cut him off from his people; for by giving his children to Molech, he has defiled my sanctuary and profaned my holy name. Leviticus Ch.20:3
Sinning defiantly
But anyone who sins defiantly, whether native-born or alien, blasphemes the LORD, and that person must be cut off from his people. Because he has despised the LORD's word and broken his commands, that person must surely be cut off; his guilt remains on him. Numbers Ch.15:30-31
God was willing to forgive those who made unintentional errors if they realised their mistakes quickly and corrected them. However, those who defiantly and deliberately sinned received a harsher judgment. Intentional sin grows out of an improper attitude toward God.
Forgiveness
Blasphemy can be forgiven an example is the apostle Paul.
Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 1 Timothy Ch.1:13- 14
Paul rejected Jesus as the Son of God so he blasphemed. He later on repented and was forgiven.
There is one sin that cannot be forgiven and that is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.
I tell you the truth, all the sins and blasphemies of men will be forgiven them. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin. Mark Ch.3:28-29
Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit happens when a person deliberately and consciously shows contempt for the power of God. An example of this was when the Jews said that the power of Jesus to heal people came from an evil spirit.
Chapter 22 Rejection To reject someone is to refuse to accept them. For example, if a man applied for a job with a company and they decide to not accept his application then they have rejected him.
The word rejection means that someone is either in the process of being rejected (not accepted) or has already been rejected.
Most people want to be liked so it is difficult when we are not accepted. This rejection may be because of the way we look, our personality or our behaviour. To be rejected is an unpleasant thing to be cast on to you. It can be extremely hurtful.
Rejection by those close to you
Rejection from those close to you can be extremely painful because we trust these people more than others.
Jesus said to them, "Only in his hometown, among his relatives and in his own house is a prophet without honor." Mark Ch.6:4 NIV
Jesus says in this verse that a worker for God (prophet) is never honoured in his hometown. But this didnt slow down his work for God, as this work was far more important than being respected or honoured by others. If family, neighbours or friends dont respect your work for God then dont let this rejection stop you from serving God.
Overcoming rejection through teamwork
When the disciples travelled through the countryside, they did it in pairs. As individuals they probably could have reached more areas of the country but Christ didnt want this. He decided that as a pair they could encourage and strengthen each other, especially when they were facing rejection. When we are facing rejection we can get strength from God but he also encourages us to meet our needs by teamwork with others.
For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building. 1 Corinthians Ch.3: 9 NIV
Serving Christ requires us to work with others as a team.
Overcoming rejection by drawing close to God
Christ gave an example of complete trust in God.
When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to Him who judges justly. 1 Peter Ch.2:23
The example of Christ was one of absolute non-resistance to evil and complete trust in God. He could have avoided all his trials (Matthew 26:53), but he knew that the path of salvation lay through suffering and death, and like a good shepherd , he led the way. He overcame the rejection by others by putting complete trust in God.
Rejection of others
We are told by Paul to not reject others but rather accept each other.
Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God. Romans Ch.15:7
Accept other believers and dont reject them on the basis of some trivial matter.
Rejection by God?
God promises never to leave or forsake us.
Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you." Hebrews Ch.13:5 NIV
God confirmed to Israel that we had not left them:
For the LORD will not reject his people; he will never forsake his inheritance. Psalm 94:14 NIV
Paul made a similar point to the first century believers:
I ask then: Did God reject his people? By no means! I am an Israelite myself, a descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin. God did not reject his people, whom he foreknew. Don't you know what the Scripture says in the passage about Elijahhow he appealed to God against Israel: Romans Ch.11:1-2 NIV
Even though Israel had rejected their Messiah and had refused to listen to Pauls preaching, Gods promises were still relevant. If it is true for the Israelites then how much more so for the believer! God will never leave us or forsake us, providing we do not leave him.
And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons:
"My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son." Hebrews Ch.12:5-6
Silence - Rejection by God?
Job suffered a lot in his life. He was especially upset because God was silent and gave no reasons for his suffering. Job misinterpreted this silence as meaning that God was rejecting him. This apparent rejection by God bothered Job even more than any suffering he was going through.
"Only grant me these two things, O God, and then I will not hide from you: withdraw your hand far from me, and stop frightening me with your terrors. Job Ch.13: 20 21 NIV
Job didnt want God to withdraw your hand far from me, in other words, reject him. Gods silence does not mean he has rejected us. Sometimes we will intervene in our lives in unseen ways.
Rejection of God
Sometimes, through our actions and thoughts we can make the mistake of rejecting God. This can be done in a number of ways:
1. Selfishness
Sometimes selfishness can lead us to rejecting God. The Israelites did this:
You have said harsh things against me," says the LORD. "Yet you ask, 'What have we said against you?'
"You have said, 'It is futile to serve God. What did we gain by carrying out his requirements and going about like mourners before the LORD Almighty? But now we call the arrogant blessed. Certainly the evildoers prosper, and even those who challenge God escape.' " Malachi Ch.3:13-15
So here is a case showing the people's arrogant attitude toward God. They basically rejected God saying "It is foolish to worship God and obey him. What good does it do to obey his laws, and to sorrow and mourn for our sins ? From now on, as far as we are concerned, Blessed are the arrogant, for those who do evil shall prosper, and those who dare God to punish them shall get off scot-free".
So, we can see from these verses that selfishness is a rejection of God and all that he represents. Is that the same with us sometimes? Do we sometimes ask "what good does serving God do for me?". If we do then our focus is selfish. Our real question should be "What good does serving God do for God?"
2. Trusting our own judgement more than Gods judgement
There are many people in this world who ignore the evidence of Gods existence. The Bible tells us that these people are foolish.
The fool says in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good. Psalm 14:1
There are others who are wicked because they refuse to live by Gods commandments. We become like these people when we rely more on ourself than on God.
3. Trusting other humans more than God
Some people put church leaders or other people before God.
This has happened in the past as well. For example in the time Of Samuel. The true king of Israel was God. However, the nation of Israel wanted another king.
Samuel summoned the people of Israel to the LORD at Mizpah and said to them, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'I brought Israel up out of Egypt, and I delivered you from the power of Egypt and all the kingdoms that oppressed you.' But you have now rejected your God, who saves you out of all your calamities and distresses. And you have said, 'No, set a king over us.' So now present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes and clans." 1 Samuel Ch.10: 17-19 NIV
Israel rejected God by asking for a human being instead of God as their guide and leader. If we look at history we can see that men and women have continually rejected God. This practice continues even today. We need to look at our lives and decide what is our highest priority. If we push God aside and treat someone or something else as being more important then we are rejecting God. There are many examples in the Bible for us to learn from and they all teach one thing God should be foremost in our life.
4. Not taking up Gods offer of salvation
God loved us so much they he gave us his only begotten son. Jesus perfect life, his truthful words and his sacrifice of love are designed so that we sit up and take notice and follow the example of Jesus. If we do this we are taking up Gods offer of salvation.
Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the Scriptures:
" 'The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone [cornerstone]; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes'? Matthew Ch.21:42 NIV
However, if we ignore Gods gracious gift of his son, then we rejecting God himself.
Summary
As we might expect, the people whom God condemns are those who do not recognise their need and who are unwilling to submit to God and His word. Such were the Pharisees:
They tie up heavy loads and put them on men's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them. Matthew Ch.23:4
Such men are self-righteous and have lost their sense of dependence upon God. They may be divided into three classes:
1. Those who ignore Gods word completely, who are willingly ignorant:
Like the people who lived in the days of Noah, they refuse to heed the warnings given by those who preach the way of righteousness. They deliberately choose to remain in darkness. Noah had certainly preached to his contemporaries, but when the flood came they knew not. They knew all right; they had heard the message, after a fashion. But inasmuch as they did not want to know, their ears had been shut to Noahs saving message. The disciples were told to shake the dust off their feet when leaving the houses of such people.
2. Those who deliberately distort it or reject Gods word:
The Lord refers to blasphemers against the Holy Spirit, for whom there is no forgiveness. These are false prophets who present a distorted gospel and invite men to believe in a hope founded upon the quicksand of human reasoning.
3. Those whose lives do not sincerely attempt to reflect Gods word:
They are hypocrites, who act out a part when it serves their purposes; their piety is based upon self-interest. The Lord has a stern warning for those who hear the word of God but either ignore its directions, or manipulate its teaching to suit themselves:
"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Matthew Ch.7:21 Psalm 34:17-20 ESV / 256 helpful votes
When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all. He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken.

Jesus Will Come Again
The Bible presents God's work of redemption as an ongoing process. Throughout the Old Testament, He leads His chosen people toward truth and righteousness. The final phase of the process of redemption began with the first coming of Jesus and will culminate in the events surrounding His Second Coming. There will be a final judgment of all people, living and dead. The faithful will receive new spiritual bodies for eternal life; the wicked will be cast into hell. There will be a final defeat and destruction of all evil -- Satan, sin, suffering and death. The kingdom of God will come to its fulfillment at last.
Jesus left no doubt that He will return again to complete His mission of salvation for mankind:
"Don't be troubled. You trust God, now trust in me. There are many rooms in my Father's home, and I am going to prepare a place for you. If this were not so, I would tell you plainly. When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am." (NLT, John 14:1-4)

When Will Jesus Come Again?
The Bible tells of many events that will occur before the Second Coming and which will be signs that the end is near. There will be wars, famines, earthquakes, false prophets, persecutions, and an increase in wickedness. The Gospel must first be preached to all nations. The temple at Jerusalem would be destroyed. (The temple was in fact destroyed by the Romans in 70 A.D.)
Many of Jesus' followers expected Him to return within their lifetimes, and that expectation was supported by several passages such as:
"Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away." (NAS, Luke 21:32-33)
On the other hand, passages such as this one place the Second Coming much farther in the future:
"And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world for a witness to all the nations, and then the end shall come." (NAS, Matthew 24:14)
No completely satisfactory resolution of these differences in the Bible has ever been found, and the timing of the Second Coming has been a subject of hot debate within Christianity from the beginning. Jesus, Himself, said no one would be able to predict exactly when He would return:
"No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come." (NIV, Mark 13:32-33)
The event, when it happens, will be swift and unexpected:
So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him. (NIV, Matthew 24:43-44)
Over the past 2000 years there have been countless attempts to interpret current events according to the signs in the Bible. There have been innumerable predictions that the Second Coming was imminent. All have been wrong.

Be Prepared!
Because no one knows when Jesus will come again for the final judgment, we must always be prepared. Jesus' Parable of the Ten Virgins (Matthew 25:1-13) speaks directly to the need to be spiritually prepared for the final judgment, and a number of His other sayings make the same point.

Resurrection
Everyone who has ever lived will be brought back to life in some form to face the final judgment along with those still living:
Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man. Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth -- those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. (NKJV, John 5:25-29)
While we are still living, or until Jesus comes again, we have every opportunity to repent (change our ways from evil to good). But in the end we will all be judged (see What does the Bible say about salvation?).
Everyone, the still living and the resurrected dead, will face God's judgment. Even those who profess Christianity will be judged by the deeds they have done in life (Matthew 7:21- 23, 2 Corinthians 5:10). Those who have lived righteous lives will be granted eternal life; those who have lived evil lives will be condemned to eternal punishment (Matthew 5:29-30, 25:31-46, Mark 9:43-48). The apostle Paul put it this way:
Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. We live by faith, not by sight. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad. (NIV, 2 Corinthians 5:6-10)
The righteous who are granted eternal life will receive new spiritual bodies that are in some ways similar to the old earthly body and in some ways different.
So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. (NIV, 1 Corinthians 15:42-44)

The New Heaven and Earth
The final result of the Second Coming will be fulfillment of all the promises of the kingdom of God. Satan will be destroyed, and there will be no more sin, suffering or death.
And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever. (NIV, Revelation 20:10)
"As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear." (NIV, Matthew 13:40-43)
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away. (NIV, Revelation 21:1-4)

Miscellaneous Topics
Several topics receive less prominent mention in the Bible than those above, but may provide additional insight into the events surrounding the Second Coming. Because these topics are not fully explained in the Bible, a number of different interpretations have arisen, and many of those interpretations go far beyond any Biblical basis.
The Antichrist (1 John 2:18, 22, 4:3, 2 John 1:7) is identified as a liar and deceiver who denies that Jesus is the Christ. As of the writing of 1 and 2 John, at the end of the first century, many antichrists were said to be already present in the world. It is not clear, but there may be another antichrist to come whose spirit is already present in the world.
The antichrist is sometimes said to be the beasts of Daniel 7:1-12, the beast of Revelation 13:11-18, or the "man of sin" of 2 Thessalonians 2:3, but those interpretations are not certain.
At various times in history one group or another has proclaimed the identity of the antichrist. Those who have been so named include the Roman emperors Caligula, Titus, Nero and Claudius, Muhammad (the prophet of Islam), most of the popes, many Protestant theologians, many world leaders, and many other individuals and groups. However, such proclamations do not have any Biblical basis.
The Great Tribulation (Revelation 7:14) is a period of great suffering and distress which will occur in conjunction with the Second Coming. It is often seen as a fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecy of Daniel 9:24-27.

The Millennium (Revelation 20:1-10) is described as a period of a thousand years during which Satan is bound and the resurrected saints reign with Christ before the final judgment. There is no other clear mention of the millennium in the Bible. The nature of the millennium is a subject of great debate within Christianity, and beliefs about it fall into several categories:
Amillennialism views the millennium as a symbol of the present age where the Church carries on Christ's work and the binding of Satan was accomplished by Jesus in the past. Postmillennialism views the millennium as a future period during which the gospel message will eliminate evil from the world and Christ will rule spiritually for a thousand years before before the Second Coming. Premillennialism views the millennium as a thousand year period between the Second Coming and the final judgment. Two subcategories of premillennialism can be identified: Historic premillennialism views the millennium as the next stage in advancement of the kingdom of God, coming after the present age of the Church and before the new heaven and earth. Dispensationalism views the millennium as a period during which the Old Testament promises to the nation of Israel will be fulfilled. In this view: Establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 is evidence that the Second Coming is approaching. The Rapture (see below) will occur before the Great Tribulation begins so that Christians will not have to face that time of suffering. The Rapture (1 Thessalonians 4:13-17) refers to the departure of faithful Christians (the Church) to meet the Lord in the air. There are three theories about when the Rapture will occur:
Pre-tribulational rapture: When John ascends to heaven (Revelation 4:1-2) Mid-tribulational rapture: When the two prophets ascend to heaven (Revelation 11:11-12) Post-tribulational rapture: At the end of the seven bowls (Revelation 16:17-21)
