A Peep from the Past
The first whistle that blew on a
Pathfinder camp took place at Northern
Michigan on June 1926. That very sound
was made by Elder Grover Fattic. It created
a line composed of 18 boys who participated
in that first ever MV (Missionary
Volunteers) camp in history.
The Present State
Just last May 6-11, 2013, a similar
scenario was seen at Central Philippine
Adventist College. At the sound of the
whistle of Pastor Von John Sanchez, NOC
Youth Department director, however, about
50 lines of young people were formed. This
Youth Challenge 2013 with the theme, The
Power of One, gathered about 1200
registered participants composed of youth,
Pathfinders, and Master Guides all over the
province.
A typical day during the camp is
opened by a line call early in the day.
Campers would meet the rising of the sun
with a devotional. Honor classes followed:
knot tying, dress making, love courtship and
marriage, camping skills, flower
arrangement are among the ones being
offered. Afternoon hours are occupied by
sports: basketball, aquatics and many others.
As the sun would set, the whole camp would
gather at the gymnasium of the college for
another devotional session. Activities
continue until the evening with fun games
and team-building programs.
On the third day of the camp, a fun
run was conducted from the college heights
to the town proper and back with an estimate
of 500 SDA/non-SDA participants.
Another highlight was the Sabbath
afternoon which installed about 30 Master
Guides during the Investiture program.
The staff, composed of twelve
energetic and committed people, admitted
they felt tired along the activity. But by
helping each other and uniting as one, it
seems that work becomes lighter, one
declared.
One camper confessed, I brought
with me three non-SDA friends on Sabbath.
They told me they were blessed and I was
surprised the next Saturday one of them
spent the holy day in one of our churches in
his hometown. He was glad the Camp
made him an opportunity to witness for
Christ.
A Sight of the Future
Pathfinders, Master Guides, and the
whole Adventist youth are a power of one in
aiming the Advent message to all the world
in this generation. Soon, it will not be the
shrill sound of a whistle that will gather
thousands but there will be the shout of a
command, the archangels voice, the sound
of Gods trumpet that will gather the risen
dead in Christ and the living up in the clouds
to meet the Lord in the air during His second
coming (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17).
