Sports activities are now an important part of the curriculum in most schools,
colleges and universities throughout the country. In fact, the importance of sport is
such that there are specialist colleges becoming Centres of Excellence in
particular sports activities. Recently the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown announced
that more money will be made available for Sports Education.

Apart from these specialist centres most schools believe in developing the natural
talents of those pupils who show excellence in a particular sport. In the majority of
cases this training will be given during daylight hours, but more and more students
are willing to train on evenings to develop their skills further.

To enable students to train on an evening, when darkness falls, it is important that
artificial lighting is provided, to enable them to train in a stimulating and safe way.
For example, a young cricketer facing a solid ball coming at him or her at over
70mph, must be able to judge the speed and direction instantly, otherwise they
may become injured. Good quality artificial lighting is also concerned with
creating an enjoyable environment, so that the student can concentrate on
learning the skills peculiar to their chosen sport.

This brochure is intended to assist the lighting designer in creating a stimulating as
well as safe environment by giving examples and suggestions which have been
tried and tested over many years by Hilclare lighting engineers, using modern light
sources and high quality luminaires. Many sporting activities can be lit to various
levels of illuminance depending on whether the participants are training, or
playing to local, national, or international standard. Where this is applicable,
different examples are given to satisfy the various levels and standards. It is
important that our future medal winners are given the best training at a very early
age, and Hilclare will be with them all the way to help provide the best possible
training environment.

Introduction

As with any lighting situation there
are many considerations to take
onboard when designing lighting
for sport.

For example, the illuminance or
amount of light will vary
depending on the task. Also, a
cricket ball racing towards you at
high speed must be visible at all
times along its trajectory, making
the need for good uniformity of
light.

This brochure has been created to
assist specifiers such as architects,
consulting engineers, and local
authority engineers to satisfy
themselves that Hilclare Lighting
has got the answers when it comes
to School Sports Lighting.
Lighting for Sport

5
To help with this specification process
we have looked in detail at the most
frequently played sports in schools
and colleges, and provided a lighting
design which meets all the common
criteria, together with a list of the
Hilclare products required.

However, it must be said that there is
no substitute for a full lighting design
being carried out by an experienced
and qualified lighting engineer, and
we strongly suggest getting one of
our sales engineers involved as early
on in the design process as possible.
The result will be a well designed
scheme that your school or college
can be justly proud of.

Special Points of Consideration

Due to the pitch size at this level of play it would be normal practice to illuminate
using 12m or higher columns down each side. At heights lower than this the pitch
will still be illuminated but there could be problems with glare when crossing the
ball from side to side. It must be noted that where pitches run side by side, at
least 10m should separate the PPAs, with the columns in between. It is advisable
that the columns are root mounted and that padding is provided around the
column bases to avoid accidents. Columns should be mounted at least 1m
behind the Total Playing Area (TPA).

For training purposes it is usual to use the lighting system at one end of the pitch
only. This will maintain the quality of the lighting whilst saving on energy.

Although SON lamps are more efficient than metal halide, it is generally
accepted that due to the low hourly usage the colour rendering advantage of
metal halide lamps make them the preferred option.

Running Tracks
Special Points of Consideration

Due to the generally small width of school and college running tracks, it is
customary to use low wattage luminaires at a lower mounting height. Apart from
the economics involved this has the added advantage of easier maintenance.
By the use of asymmetric reflectors the upward light spillage (light pollution) is
kept to zero, and therefore complies with the Institute of Lighting Engineers (ILE)
recommendations.

Although SON lamps are more efficient than metal halide, it is generally
accepted that due to the low hourly usage the colour rendering advantage of
metal halide lamps make them the preferred option.

For training purposes it is customary to switch off every other fitting which lowers
uniformity. However, if only one or two persons are involved there would be little
problem. If all running lanes are taken up then recreation level lighting should be
considered.

It is advisable that the columns are root mounted and that padding is provided
around the column bases to avoid accidents. Columns should be mounted at
least 1m outside the track area.

Squash Courts
Special Points of Consideration

Due to the solidity of the squash ball it is imperative that the luminaires chosen
are of a resilient and impact resistant type. Wire guards will help prevent the ball
entering the fitting, but a lamp can break through vibration and bits of glass
would pass through the wire creating a Health and Safety problem. Therefore, it
is customary to use a totally enclosed fixture with a clear polycarbonate front
cover, and polished aluminium reflectors.

Linear or compact fluorescent lamps are very efficient when used with HF
electronic control gear, and have a useful life generally in excess of 16,000
hours. Wirewound ballasts should be avoided as it is important to steer clear of
any light source which causes flicker.

Basketball
Special Points of Consideration

A basketball is very large and heavy, and therefore it is imperative that the
luminaires chosen are of a resilient and impact resistant type. Wire guards will
help prevent the ball entering the fitting, but a lamp can break due to vibration
and bits of glass would pass through the wire creating a Health and Safety
problem. Therefore, it is customary to use a totally enclosed fixture with a clear
polycarbonate front cover, and aluminium reflectors for wide distribution.

Although SON lamps are more efficient than metal halide, it is generally
accepted that due to the poor colour rendering with the former, it is more
advantageous to utilise the white appearance of metal halide lamps.

Basketball halls are usually quite high at 8m upwards, but the designer must
ensure that light beam crossover occurs at least at basket height, otherwise the
ball may appear to flash light and dark when travelling through the air.

Tennis
Special Points of Consideration

It is customary to light the court from each corner to ensure uniformity. However,
this can produce glare. To avoid glare, columns need to be 8-10m high, and the
addition of columns/luminaires at points opposite the net-line enable lower
angles of inclination, therefore reducing glare significantly.

Although SON lamps are more efficient than metal halide, it is generally
accepted that due to the poor colour rendering with the former, it is more
advantageous to utilise the white appearance of metal halide lamps.

It is common practice to have 2, 3, or 4 courts running alongside each other at
most schools, colleges, and universities. Where this occurs it will be necessary to
have a minimum of 6m spacing between adjacent courts. The mid-court
column can then be used to hold luminaires back-to-back for each court.

It is advisable that the columns are root mounted and that padding is provided
around the column bases to avoid accidents.

Golf Driving Ranges
Special Points of Consideration

A golf driving range comprises of a long row of tees which are usually under
cover. The height of the structure varies but is generally around 4m to allow for a
club held above the head. This area is lit usually with corrosion resistant linear
fluorescent luminaires such as CAZORLA T5 to an average horizontal illuminance
of 100lux at floor level, a uniformity of at least 0.8, and surface reflectances
taken as zero.

Projector fittings are then used to light the balls travelling through the air and,
although SON lamps are more efficient than metal halide, it is generally
accepted that due to the poor colour rendering with the former, it is more
advantageous to utilise the white appearance of metal halide lamps.

It is common practice to place a series of 1kW or 2kW MH symmetrical floodlights
on the roof of the structure aimed straight out towards the distance markers. This
will illuminate the vertical surface of the ball facing the striker, enabling him or
her to see the direction of travel. The distance markers will also be illuminated by
luminaires local to the signs.

Indoor Swimming Pools
Special Points of Consideration

A 25m wide swimming pool is split into 10 lanes of 2.5m each. The height of the
structure varies but is generally around 8m to allow for a seated spectator area
along its length. This area should be lit in such a way as to avoid reflected glare,
which can prevent being able to see into the water should a swimmer be in
difficulties.

In addition, maintenance costs should be considered when locating fittings as it
is generally expensive to drain the pool, if the fittings are mounted directly over
it. The best lighting method, when the ceiling height is above 4m, is to use IP65
asymmetric floodlights acting as uplighters, to flash the ceiling as evenly as
possible. This is also better for swimmers doing the backstroke, as they are not
looking directly into rows of luminaires.

Although SON lamps are more efficient than metal halide, it is generally
accepted that due to the poor colour rendering with the former, it is more
advantageous to utilise the white appearance of metal halide lamps.

Cricket Practice Nets
Special Points of Consideration

It is normal practice for room surfaces in a practice area to be dark coloured,
and for the cricket ball to be either white or bright orange. The reason for this is
so that the batsman can see the ball easily and be able to judge height,
distance and speed. The lighting needs to provide good vertical illuminance
therefore, together with good uniformity, which will also help to reduce any
strobing effect.

Although discharge lamps, especially SON lamps, are more efficient than
fluorescent tubes, it is generally accepted that due to stroboscopic flicker with
the former, it is more advantageous to utilise T5 compact lamps running on HF
electronic control gear for safety reasons.

Although netting is normally self-enclosed it is best practice to use luminaires that
have impact resistance, such as wire guards and polycarbonate clear panels.
The suggested scheme for this application uses surface square luminaires with
four compact lamps for County Training Standard. Two of the four lamps can
then be switched off to reduce the light levels to Recreation or Practice
standard.

General Use Sports Hall
Special Points of Consideration

It is difficult to provide a lighting scheme for a multi-purpose sports hall. Some
sports require a higher level of light or better control than others, and whilst
catering correctly for one sport it is possible to create problems for another.

It is best practice therefore to light the area to two levels for optimum choice,
and use luminaires that have impact resistance such as wire guards and
polycarbonate clear panels. The suggested scheme for this application uses
surface square luminaires with four 55W compact lamps for both Higher and
Lower Standards. Two of the four lamps can then be switched off to reduce the
light levels to training levels when required.

Although discharge lamps, especially SON lamps, are more efficient than
fluorescent tubes, it is generally accepted that due to stroboscopic flicker with
the former, it is more advantageous to utilise T5 compact lamps running on HF
electronic control gear for safety reasons.
