[Commentators have given some imaginary interpretation use of the words. The truth is
that the Surah as a whole was revealed on a particular occasion of special importance.
The Sixth Holy Imam Jafar ibne Muhammad As-Sadiq said:
"The tribes of Bani Salim raised a huge army to launch a surprise attack on
Madina in order to kill the believers and arrest the Holy Prophet. The Holy
Prophet, after receiving the information, sent one of his companions along
with a party of Muslim warriors to prevent the planned attack, but in the
first encounter he ran away from the battlefield, leaving a large number of
his men dead. Another companion was sent. He also returned defeated.
Then Umar volunteered to go with a promise that he would certainly
disperse the enemy. He too failed. At last Ali was sent. He with his men,
travelling in the night and resting in the daytime, reached the scene of
battle, attacked the enemy in the early hours of dawn, and won a decisive
victory. When he turned, the Holy Prophet received him outside the city and
said: "O Ali, if there had not been the risk of people idolizing you as the
Christians worship Isa, I would have made public such of your merits as
would make people use the soil under your feet to cure their ailments."
These verses were revealed on this occasion. (Minhajus Sadiqin).
The HOLY PROPHET (SAWW) and the Muslim army had not even entered Madina
that the Messenger Angel Gabriel conveyed this Surah to the HOLY PROPHET (SAWW).
the first five verses of this Surah describe the event praising the activity of the move of
the army to defend the Truth and its believers under its ever victorious Commander
who saved the faith and the faithful by defending the enemy and not running away,
leaving the Muslim soldiers to their fate in the hands of the triumphant foe to suffer
death and destruction. As regards the companions who ran away from the field and
return defeated on the first two occasions---refer to History.]

COMMENTARY

[As after the terrible disaster the Day of Judgment will begin, it will be so a far-reaching
convulsion that no earthquake which has taken place before can even be compared to
it. It only gives some idea of the world-shaking event. Having no idea of such a
tremendous convulsion, consequences of which will be totally different from any
convulsion experienced by man, he will not be able to make head or tail of it. He will be
in a puzzled agony of total confusion.
The earth will divulge all the events that ever took place on her. The present
order will pass away, but the deeds done therein, even the most secret, will be made
known when ALLAH will give the command. See commentary of Nahl 16:68 for the
inspiration (wahi) or direction given to bees.
It is written in Minhajus Sadiqin that according to Fatema Zahra one day an
earthquake sent the people of Madina into a panic, and all of them along with Abu Bakr
and Umar came to Ali. He took them outside the city and addressed them:
"The quaking of the earth has overwhelmed you with fright. What will you
do when it will quake before the Day of Judgment?"
Then he put his hand on the earth and commanded it to cease quaking. It stopped
to quake. He said:
"Do you wonder at what has happened? I am he to whom the earth will
speak on the Day of Judgment," and recited surah al Zilzal.]





ZALZALAH
SURAH [99] THE CONVULSION

Izaa zulzilatil-Ardu zilzaa-lahaa,
99:1] When the earth is shaken with her
(violent) shaking,
These verses 1-4 refer to the violent effects of destruction and disaster the earth will suffer on the Day of Judgment. See also Chapter 88 Gaashiyah.
The whole earth will be quaked and getting reduced to nothing bursting and throwing out all its content, even the heaviest of them. And the new order of
justice and truth begins in the spiritual hereafter. It will dissolve the material world as if it never existed.


Wa akhrajati-Ardu ath-qaalahaa,
99:2] And the earth brings forth her burdens,
(see commentary for verse 1)


Wa qaalal-insaanu maa lahaa?-
99:3] And man says: What has befallen her?

Yawma-izin-tuhaddithu akhbaarahaa,
99:4] On that day she shall tell her news,

Bi-anna Rabbaka awhaa lahaa.
99:5] Because your Lord had inspired her.
The word of command from the Almighty Lord would have brought the dissolutive and disastrous effect and the deeds done openly or secretly will be laid bare in
the full light of the day.
Wahi or revelation or instruction or command, need not always be through an angel --- see verse 16:68.


Yawma-izin-yasdurun-naasu ashtaatal-
liyuraw a-maalahum.
99:6] On that day men shall come forth in
sundry bodies that they may be shown their
works.
Refer to Infitar 82:5.
In this world good and evil is mixed together, but on the Day of Resurrection each grade of good and evil will be sorted out. So they will proceed in groups to
receive judgment. Refer to the commentary of Bani Israel 17:71. They will be shown the exact import of everything that they had thought, said and done in the
life of this world of test and trial.


Faman-ya-mal mithqaala zarratin
khayran-yarah.
99:7] So. he who has done an atom's weight
of good shall see it
NOTE: how man is warned of the strictness with which he will be dealt with in the accounting for his deeds. Even the smallest deed, good or evil, will not escape
the accounting and will be duly recompensed, and no one will be able to bear the burden of the other. See verses 2:48; 6:165; 35:18; 39:7 and 53:38.
In this stage every individual will realise his own deeds---good or bad---and the last stage of the resurrection is the judging of the actions, as a whole, i.e.,
the last stage of Shafaat-e-Kubra
These verses have been taken as to signify that our action here, assumes concrete forms on the resurrection day, causing pleasure or pain.


Wa man-ya-mal-mithqaala zarratin-
sharran-yarah.
99:8] And he who has done an atom's weight
of evil shall see it.
