Preface and Acknowledgments

"I have found it extremely useful to have access to the Nordoff Robbins Evidence Bank not
only has it signposted me to the music therapy research within different client groups that is
available, but also it helped me focus my own evidence search and subsequent reading list in
support of my clinical work. I was able to utilise the evidence bank whilst studying and also since
qualifying, providing a useful list of material to share with employers and funders, who are
potentially still very new to the benefits of music therapy and the relevant evidence available."
Music therapist

Welcome to the second edition of the Nordoff Robbins Evidence Bank; a collection of a wide range
of music therapy and music and health research references and resources organised into a series
of Accounts.
The aim of this publication is to collate research papers and other key sources of information so that
practitioners may locate the resources they need quickly and easily. Following the success of the
first edition (published in 2010) and receiving an overwhelmingly positive response from
practitioners and researchers worldwide, this new edition has over 200 additional references,
updated web links and two new Accounts: Research Methods and Methodologies (Account 16) and
Training and Supervision (Account 17).
As part of Nordoff Robbins wider initiative to provide research resources for practitioners, the
Evidence Bank is complemented by the following Research Department publications:
Presenting the Evidence: The Up-to-Date Guide for Music
Therapists Responding to Demands for Clinical Effectiveness
and Evidence-Based Practice (2009)
Towards Ethical Research: A Guide for Music Therapy and
Music & Health Practitioners, Researchers and Students (2011)

We would like to thank all practitioners whose comments helped us to create this updated edition,
as well as the researchers whose work contributes to the ongoing development of evidence
nationally and internationally. Without their commitment, the Nordoff Robbins Evidence Bank
wouldnt exist.
We hope the Nordoff Robbins Evidence Bank continues to be a useful resource for music therapy
and music and health practitioners and researchers, as well as to policy makers, managers and
fundraisers who would like to know more about how and why music works.
