3 WELCOME Dear Student, We are very happy that you have chosen to come to our program. All the faculty and staff at the Center for ESL are dedicated to making your time and your experience in our program productive and enjoyable. You are a major component of the experience. Your hard work and good attitude will also go a long way in making your learning fast and satisfying. Learning English, or any language, can be confusing and frustrating or it can be exciting and fun. Much depends on how you learn. If you are active and participate in class, chances are that you are going to learn quickly. If you make an effort to make friends with your classmates and other people from university or from the community, chances are that you are not only going to learn quickly, but you are also going to have fun. Your teachers, our staff, and I will also be there to help you. Please do not hesitate to ask us for help. At the Center for ESL, we also believe that cultural experiences and excursions add significantly to your understanding of the United States, the state of Kentucky, and the University of Kentucky. These experiences will also help your English. During your time here, we will offer you many chances to participate in activities that show you our country, our state, and our university. We will try, as often as possible, to put you into contact with American students so that you can share your ideas and experiences with them and you can learn from each other. Again, these activities will help your English. Many of you are here because you want to learn enough English to be admitted to the University of Kentucky or another university in the United States. Together with you, we will do everything to help you achieve your goal. We will help you prepare for the tests that you need to enter the University, and we will put you in touch with the admissions officers at the undergraduate and graduate levels that can make your enrollment possible. In other words, we are all here to help you. You are the key to your success. Please take advantage of all the new experiences open to you in this important time. Be prepared to work hard and please ask for help if you need it. Remember, we wish for you what you wish for yourself! Welcome to the University of Kentucky and the Center for English as a Second Language. I look forward to meeting you all in person.

TOEFL Score Ranges for Advancement and Completion of ESL Program 8 We are responsible for reporting to your sponsoring (paying) agency: attendance, absences, late arrivals, early departures, and/or academic issues related to dismissals, appeals, and failing grades. ATTENDANCE Students are expected to attend all classes they have registered for, unless specifically excused by the instructors. In case of illness, students must contact their instructors. Only legitimate absences, which have been reported, will be excused. All other absences are considered unexcused. 20% of class refers to how many times a class meet in a session. The numbers below may change if your class meets less often. After four unexcused classes, you will be required to meet with your Academic Advisor to discuss consequences and possible solutions. After seven unexcused classes, you will be required to meet with your Academic Advisor and possibly the chief immigration officer. Your immigration record could be canceled. DISMISSAL There are two ways you can be dismissed: 1. Students who received an E average GPA for two consecutive 8-week sessions will be dismissed from the program. Dismissed students may appeal, but successful appeal is difficult and unlikely. 2. Students who do not pass a level after three times will be dismissed from the program, unless there are unusual circumstances. Dismissed students may appeal.
Dismissed students may appeal, but successful appeal is difficult and unlikely. If the appeal is granted and student is not successful in his or her fourth attempt, the student will be dismissed without possibility of appeal.
APPEALS If you are dismissed and eligible for appeal, you will receive a letter and instructions on what you should do. To complete the appeal, you need to follow the instructions provided in the letter. These instructions normally include the following: 1. Write a letter to the teachers in the ESL program informing them of what measures you are willing to take to improve your performance in the program. In order to do this, some indication of your shortcomings this past session should be included, as well as a plan for improvement. 2. Make a study plan that allows for faithful attendance at classes, time for homework, and some free time. 3. Return these documents by the deadline to the CESL office. 4. Attend your appeal committee meeting. The committee (composed of your teachers and CESL staff) will either grant or deny your appeal. If your appeal is denied, you should transfer schools or return to your home country. 9 CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS There are certain behaviors that are expected of all students: 1. Please be on time to your classes, tests, and other events. It is disrespectful to the teacher and other students if you are constantly late. 2. It is expected that you will not talk to another student while your teacher is speaking to the class. If you have a question, please ask your teacher. 3. You should do your homework and be prepared for class. It is expected that you will participate in class. Many American classrooms are based on discussions as well as lectures. 4. All students are expected to act with Academic Integrity. All academic work, written or otherwise, submitted by students to their instructors or other academic supervisors, and is expected to be the result of their own thought, research or self- expression. When students submit work purporting to be their own, but which in any way borrows ideas, organization, wording or anything else from another source without appropriate acknowledgment of the fact, the students are guilty of plagiarism.
Plagiarism includes reproducing someone elses work, whether it be published article, chapter of a book, a paper from a friend or some file, or whatever. Plagiarism also includes the practice of employing another person to alter or revise the work, which a student submits as his/her own, whoever that other person may be. Students may discuss assignments among themselves or with an instructor or tutor, but when the actual work is done, it must be done by the student, and the student alone.
TEXTBOOKS You MUST buy the assigned books for your class. If you cannot find a copy of an assigned text in either Kennedy Bookstore or the University Bookstore, report which texts you do not have to your teachers during the first week of classes.
ACTIVITIES It is our goal to provide students with the opportunity to interact with American people and learn more about American culture. Our activities include things held on-campus for our program only, events in Lexington, and trips outside of Lexington. Announcements are sent out to the e-mail you entered on your registration form. We also post updates on the CESL Facebook page. There are also calendars available outside the CESL offices. Sign up for activities online at https://esl.as.uky.edu/cesl-current-students. Because undergraduate dorms close during university breaks (Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Spring break), you MUST apply to those that stay open year- round if you will need housing during those breaks. These dorms are Smith, Roselle, or Kirwin. The contract is the same as an apartment lease. If you cancel it early, you will have to pay some fees. It is important to follow the rules of your dorm or graduate apartment. If you do not, you could be asked to leave. Some of the common rules are: o No smoking in the rooms o No alcohol permitted in the undergraduate dorms, regardless of your age. o You cannot leave personal items (backpack, books, etc.) in a public area (study lounge, etc.). o There are some items that are fire hazards. You cannot have them in your room. Candles, George Foreman grills, and toasters are the most common. For a complete list, please see http://www.uky.edu/Housing/undergraduate/policies.html o You are responsible for all guests you bring to your room.
Each hall in a dorm has a Resident Advisor (R.A.). If you are having problems or issues with housing/roommate, etc. they are the people you should contact first! They are there to help you! In undergraduate dorm, you have to sign a Roommate Agreement with your roommate. These are the rules of your room basically. This is a time to clearly and honestly state your opinions about your living situation. If you do not want your roommate to watch T.V. at night, play loud music, etc. then you must discuss these items with your roommate and agree on a contract. Being overly agreeable (saying yes to everything when you are really not ok with something) will not help you! However, being overly demanding (saying you MUST have it your way) is not helpful either. You must learn to work with your roommate and compromise.
OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING There are a number of apartment complexes close to the University. The University of Kentucky has an Off Campus Student Services Office. Students interested in living off campus will find their Housing Locator site very helpful. Please visit http://www.uky.edu/StudentAffairs/OCSS/ for more information about living in the Lexington community. 17 SAFETY
