WELCOME
Dear Student,
We are very happy that you have chosen to come to our program. All the faculty and staff at the Center for
ESL are dedicated to making your time and your experience in our program productive and enjoyable. You
are a major component of the experience. Your hard work and good attitude will also go a long way in
making your learning fast and satisfying.
Learning English, or any language, can be confusing and frustrating or it can be exciting and fun. Much
depends on how you learn. If you are active and participate in class, chances are that you are going to
learn quickly. If you make an effort to make friends with your classmates and other people from university
or from the community, chances are that you are not only going to learn quickly, but you are also going to
have fun. Your teachers, our staff, and I will also be there to help you. Please do not hesitate to ask us for
help.
At the Center for ESL, we also believe that cultural experiences and excursions add significantly to your
understanding of the United States, the state of Kentucky, and the University of Kentucky. These
experiences will also help your English. During your time here, we will offer you many chances to
participate in activities that show you our country, our state, and our university. We will try, as often as
possible, to put you into contact with American students so that you can share your ideas and experiences
with them and you can learn from each other. Again, these activities will help your English.
Many of you are here because you want to learn enough English to be admitted to the University of
Kentucky or another university in the United States. Together with you, we will do everything to help you
achieve your goal. We will help you prepare for the tests that you need to enter the University, and we will
put you in touch with the admissions officers at the undergraduate and graduate levels that can make your
enrollment possible. In other words, we are all here to help you.
You are the key to your success. Please take advantage of all the new experiences open to you in this
important time. Be prepared to work hard and please ask for help if you need it. Remember, we wish for
you what you wish for yourself!
Welcome to the University of Kentucky and the Center for English as a Second Language. I look forward to
meeting you all in person.

CENTER FOR ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE PROGRAM
The Center for English as a Second Language (CESL) is a non-credit academic unit at the
University of Kentucky. The Center for ESL offers five 8-week sessions per year in the spring and
fall including courses in grammar, writing, reading and listening and speaking. The Center for ESL
also offers a 4-week summer session. In addition to the intensive daytime courses, the Center for
ESL offers a semi-intensive evening program for individuals interested in improving their English
language skills.
For academically motivated students, the Center for ESL helps students who need to meet the
English proficiency requirements before beginning undergraduate or graduate degree programs.
The Center for ESL administers the Institutional Educational Testing Service (ETS) TOEFL exam is
at the end of each session. All full-time CESL instructors hold graduate level degrees in Teaching
English as a Second Language or a related field and most have professional experience living
abroad and teaching in other cultures. The Center for ESL is accredited by AAIEP.
CESL is located in Lexington, Kentucky, a city of nearly 300,000 people. Lexington is situated in
the heart of the Bluegrass region. It is known as the Horse Capital of the World and is home to
world-renowned thoroughbred horse farms. Lexington is an ideal place for international students
as it has many international companies, organizations, and restaurants. The University of Kentucky
is a major research institution, rated among the top 100 public universities in the United States.
Accommodations include on-campus dormitories, family and graduate apartments, and off-campus
private apartment communities and homes.
The mission of the Center for English as a Second Language (CESL) at the University of Kentucky
is to provide comprehensive English language instruction for non-native English speakers in a
university setting. At the Center for English as a Second Language, we assist students in achieving
language proficiency goals for academic, professional, and social purposes through multi-level
language instruction. The Center for English as a Second Language is dedicated to promoting
diversity and to providing reciprocal cultural enrichment opportunities to the University, the
community, and the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
In addition to multi-level language instruction, the Center for ESL provides cultural enrichment
opportunities to promote diversity and community involvement. Field trips to local areas such as
shopping malls, Mammoth Cave, and area horse farms, are an important part of the cultural
experience.

We are responsible for reporting to your sponsoring (paying) agency: attendance, absences, late arrivals,
early departures, and/or academic issues related to dismissals, appeals, and failing grades.
ATTENDANCE
Students are expected to attend all classes they have registered for, unless specifically excused by the
instructors. In case of illness, students must contact their instructors. Only legitimate absences, which have
been reported, will be excused. All other absences are considered unexcused. 20% of class refers to how
many times a class meet in a session. The numbers below may change if your class meets less often.
After four unexcused classes, you will be required to meet with your Academic Advisor to discuss
consequences and possible solutions.
After seven unexcused classes, you will be required to meet with your Academic Advisor and possibly the
chief immigration officer. Your immigration record could be canceled.
DISMISSAL
There are two ways you can be dismissed:
1. Students who received an E average GPA for two consecutive 8-week sessions will be dismissed
from the program. Dismissed students may appeal, but successful appeal is difficult and unlikely.
2. Students who do not pass a level after three times will be dismissed from the program, unless
there are unusual circumstances. Dismissed students may appeal.

Dismissed students may appeal, but successful appeal is difficult and unlikely. If the appeal is granted and
student is not successful in his or her fourth attempt, the student will be dismissed without possibility of
appeal.

APPEALS
If you are dismissed and eligible for appeal, you will receive a letter and instructions on what you
should do. To complete the appeal, you need to follow the instructions provided in the letter. These
instructions normally include the following:
1. Write a letter to the teachers in the ESL program informing them of what measures you are willing
to take to improve your performance in the program. In order to do this, some indication of your
shortcomings this past session should be included, as well as a plan for improvement.
2. Make a study plan that allows for faithful attendance at classes, time for homework, and some
free time.
3. Return these documents by the deadline to the CESL office.
4. Attend your appeal committee meeting. The committee (composed of your teachers and CESL
staff) will either grant or deny your appeal.
If your appeal is denied, you should transfer schools or return to your home country.
9
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS
There are certain behaviors that are expected of all students:
1. Please be on time to your classes, tests, and other events. It is disrespectful to the teacher and
other students if you are constantly late.
2. It is expected that you will not talk to another student while your teacher is speaking to the
class. If you have a question, please ask your teacher.
3. You should do your homework and be prepared for class. It is expected that you will participate
in class. Many American classrooms are based on discussions as well as lectures.
4. All students are expected to act with Academic Integrity.
All academic work, written or otherwise, submitted by students to their instructors or other
academic supervisors, and is expected to be the result of their own thought, research or self-
expression. When students submit work purporting to be their own, but which in any way
borrows ideas, organization, wording or anything else from another source without appropriate
acknowledgment of the fact, the students are guilty of plagiarism.

Plagiarism includes reproducing someone elses work, whether it be published article, chapter
of a book, a paper from a friend or some file, or whatever. Plagiarism also includes the practice
of employing another person to alter or revise the work, which a student submits as his/her
own, whoever that other person may be. Students may discuss assignments among
themselves or with an instructor or tutor, but when the actual work is done, it must be done by
the student, and the student alone.

TEXTBOOKS
You MUST buy the assigned books for your class. If you cannot find a copy of an assigned text in either
Kennedy Bookstore or the University Bookstore, report which texts you do not have to your teachers during
the first week of classes.

ACTIVITIES
It is our goal to provide students with the opportunity to interact with American people and learn more about
American culture. Our activities include things held on-campus for our program only, events in Lexington,
and trips outside of Lexington. Announcements are sent out to the e-mail you entered on your registration
form. We also post updates on the CESL Facebook page. There are also calendars available outside the
CESL offices. Sign up for activities online at https://esl.as.uky.edu/cesl-current-students. Some activities
may require you to come to the CESL office to pay a fee.

HOUSING
ON-CAMPUS HOUSING
http://www.uky.edu/Housing/index.html
Apply as early as possible. Because undergraduate dorms close during university breaks
(Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Spring break), you MUST apply to those that stay open year-
round if you will need housing during those breaks. These dorms are Smith, Roselle, or Kirwin.
The contract is the same as an apartment lease. If you cancel it early, you will have to pay
some fees.
It is important to follow the rules of your dorm or graduate apartment. If you do not, you could
be asked to leave. Some of the common rules are:
o No smoking in the rooms
o No alcohol permitted in the undergraduate dorms, regardless of your age.
o You cannot leave personal items (backpack, books, etc.) in a public area (study
lounge, etc.).
o There are some items that are fire hazards. You cannot have them in your room.
Candles, George Foreman grills, and toasters are the most common. For a complete
list, please see http://www.uky.edu/Housing/undergraduate/policies.html
o You are responsible for all guests you bring to your room.

Each hall in a dorm has a Resident Advisor (R.A.). If you are having problems or issues with
housing/roommate, etc. they are the people you should contact first! They are there to help
you!
In undergraduate dorm, you have to sign a Roommate Agreement with your roommate.
These are the rules of your room basically. This is a time to clearly and honestly state your
opinions about your living situation. If you do not want your roommate to watch T.V. at night,
play loud music, etc. then you must discuss these items with your roommate and agree on a
contract. Being overly agreeable (saying yes to everything when you are really not ok with
something) will not help you! However, being overly demanding (saying you MUST have it your
way) is not helpful either. You must learn to work with your roommate and compromise.

OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING
There are a number of apartment complexes close to the University. The University of Kentucky has
an Off Campus Student Services Office. Students interested in living off campus will find their Housing
Locator site very helpful. Please visit http://www.uky.edu/StudentAffairs/OCSS/ for more information about
living in the Lexington community.
17
SAFETY

Protect yourself and your belongings by always using common sense. The police suggest these sensible
precautions:
- Lock your door when you leave your room. Keep it locked while you sleep.
- Never prop an outside door open for entry later or for someone else to enter. Someone you
dont know could walk in.
- Never leave your belongings in a classroom, in the library, in the cafeteria, restroom, etc. Take
your things with you.
- Only carry as much cash as you need for the day.
- Close all windows and lock all doors when you leave your car. Lock all valuables in the trunk.
Dont leave the cars registration, credit cards, or other important papers in the glove
compartment.
- Utilize the buddy system do things together. If you must go out alone after dark, walk in
well-lit areas. Let a friend know where you are going and what time you will be home.
- If you ride a bicycle, wear a helmet. When you leave the bicycle, lock it to a bicycle rack.

FOR ANY EMERGENCY, DIAL 911
The University of Kentucky Police Department is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week. If you have any questions or need assistance, call (859) 257-8573.
The Police Department is located at 305 Euclid Avenue.

18
SAFECATS ESCORT
Student government will provide escorts around campus at night, if you must go out after dark. The
SAFECATS escort service (http://www.uky.edu/Police/escort.html) is available from 8:30 pm to 1:30 am
Sunday through Thursday.
Call 323-SAFE (859 257-7233) for a SAFECATS escort.
If you see or hear anything that worries you, call the police. If you hear breaking glass, pounding, a scream;
if you see someone looking into windows or into parked cars; if you see someone that is running from a car
or building carrying property; if you see any accident call the police.
Remember: It is the job of the police to look into problems. Dont worry that your call may be a false alarm.
It is better to call the police when the safety of a person, or property, seems threatened, than not to call.

VIOLENCE INTERVENTION AND PREVENTION CENTER
The Violence Intervention and Prevention (VIP) Center works with
students, staff, faculty, and community partners toward the mission of
eliminating the perpetration of power-based personal violence including
sexual assault, partner violence and stalking.
http://www.uky.edu/StudentAffairs/VIPCenter/index.php
The VIP Center office hours are 8:30 am - 5:00 pm.
To speak to someone by phone during these hours, call (859) 257-3574. To speak to someone in person
between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm, come by the VIP center located on the lower level of Frazee Hall next to the
Student Center. For 24-hour assistance after hours contact the local Bluegrass Rape Crisis Center at 859-
253-2511 or 800-656-HOPE the Bluegrass Domestic Violence Program at 800-544-2022 or the UK Police
at 911 or #UKPD.

hookah or waterpipe smoking, snus, snuff, etc.), applies to all areas of the contiguous UK campus in
Lexington, indoors and out.

EMPLOYMENT
As a F1 or J1 student, you can work on-campus only. You may work up to 20 hours weekly when classes
are in session. During class break times, you may work up to 40 hours a week.
Before you can apply for an on-campus job, you need to apply for an ITIN. This is a number you can use
instead of a social security number while you are applying for jobs. The paperwork is at the UK
International Center (Bradley Hall 214).
A good place to begin looking for a job is at Scovell Hall or http://www.uky.edu/HR/working/.

PARKING
1. You need a permit to park in a University of Kentucky parking lot.
2. To get your permit, take your Student ID card to the Parking Office at 721 Press Avenue. This
office is located in parking structure #6, which is building #571 on a U.K. map.
3. Parking permits are available for each semester separately or for the entire year. For current rates
visit this website: http://www.uky.edu/pts/parking-permits_student-permits_uk-fees-and-options.
4. Special lots are reserved for students. Depending on where you live, you may receive either an R
permit, C permit, or K permit. To see maps for available parking structures and lots, visit this
website: http://www.uky.edu/pts/parking-info_parking-maps.
5. Many streets near the dormitories require an R permit. Signs are posted on the streets.
6. Special parking spaces are reserved for handicapped drivers. Signs are posted at such spaces,
both in parking lots and on city streets.
7. Do not park in front of a fire hydrant or within 15 feet of a corner. Do not park where there is a
yellow line, or in front of a driveway. These laws apply to everyone, everywhere.
8. Before you park in a city parking lot, read all signs posted on the lot. If a sign says anything about
TOWING, park your car there only if you are doing business with the company that owns the lot.
9. Towing is very expensive in Lexington. People have been charged as much as $150.00. People
who have been towed report that they have left their cars for only minutes before being towed.
If you park illegally on campus, campus police will give you a ticket.
If your parking meter expires, you will get a ticket.
If you park illegally on a city street, city police will give you a ticket.
If you park illegally in a privately owned lot, you will be towed.
10. There are other options available if you do not own a car.
Bicycle permits: To ride a bike on campus, you do not have to have the permit, but it is free
of charge and highly recommended. For more information regarding this permit, visit:
http://www.uky.edu/pts/alternative-transportation_bicycle-information.
U.K. Shuttles: On-campus shuttles are free of charge to U.K. students with your Student ID
card. For information on routes and scheduled pick-up times, visit this website:
http://www.uky.edu/pts/buses-and-shuttles_campus-shuttles.
11. If you have any questions regarding parking services, visit the University of Kentucky Parking and
Transportation Services website at: http://www.uky.edu/pts/. There you can find contact
