A. Title : VIDEO CLIPS OF COLDPLAY AS A TEACHING MEDIA IN
TEACHING LISTENING FOR JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
A Case of an Eight Grade Students of Junior High School In Academic
Year 2014/2015

B. INTRODUCTION
I. Background of the Study
Everybody has learned their language since they were children,
especially their mother tongue. The process occurs naturally and
property with a view to communicate in society. Listening ability in
English as foreign language also play an important role in building
communication skill.
As we know, communication is a part of humans daily activities.
We can share our ideas and thoughts with other people. In that way a
smooth interaction between people can take place.
In line with the more sophisticated world, we are demanded to be
able to communicate not only by using our mother tongue but also by
foreign language, especially English which obviously more difficult to
do since we have a limitation of knowledge about foreign language. On
the other hand, as an international language, English is used to share
information, which is often happening in science and technology field.
As the foreign language in our country, English is widely taught
for the first time at elementary school. The teaching at this level have
goal to give basic knowledge of English as foreign language.
Theaching listening is one of the duties that have to be conducted
by teachers of English to improve to the students listening ability in
English.
In learning English sometimes the students are getting bored by
teachers way of teaching. There are various tecniques can be used by
the teacher to teach reading, writing, speaking, and specially listening.
Some teachers thought that listening is the easiest skill to teach, so
many of material or English handbook put it in the beginning of
material. Actually we can used many interesting media to teach them
those English skills.
For example by using English songs, video clip, movies, or maybe
chats in interesting English language.
By watching video clip as one of the teaching learning media in
English lesson helps to increase the students sensibility in hearing sense
and partisipation. It is because video clip are very interesting and the
students at all ages like it. There are song that can be sung. It will make
teaching learning process getting more interested and enjoyable for both
teacher and students.
By the fact above, that is one reason why the researcher expected
one new way to teaching listening, the alternative technique, motivating
the students to learn English and can be useful for those who are
interested learning and teaching listening.
Junior High School students need to behave and learning English
by the way they like is more helpful for them, in this case by watching
video clip.
A. Statements of the Problems
Specifically the problems studied are as follows:
1. To what extent are the students of Junior High School understanding
listening by using Video clips of Coldplay as a teaching media?
2. What are the problems faced by students of Junior High School in
understanding listening by using Video clips of Coldplay as a
teaching media?
3. What are the problems faced by the teacher in teaching listening by
using Video clips of Coldplay as a teaching media?
4. What are some possible solutions in overcoming the problems faced
by the students and the teacher?

B. Objectives of the Study
Based on the problems mentioned above, the objectives of the
study are divided into the following sub objectives as follows:
1. To know the students understanding listening by using Video clips
of Coldplay as a teaching media.
2. To find out the problems faced by students of Junior High School
in understanding listening by using Video clips of Coldplay as a
teaching media.
3. To find out the problems faced by the teacher in teaching listening
by using Video clips of Coldplay as a teaching media.
4. To give some possible solutions in overcoming the problems faced
by the students and the teacher.

C. Significances of the Study
Practically, the significant of using video clip as a teaching English
media for the Junior High School students, the students will sing a song
and understand meaning based on the video. They will study listening
better in this way, because they didnt fell studying, they just enjoying
they learning while watching video clip. Here they can practice their
listening ability, enrich the vocabulary and know how to pronounce it.
For the teacher, this new media will enrich their alternative way in
teaching English. The teacher can use way as the interesting way to
teaches listening English and how to apply it based on native speaker.
For the researcher, teaching listening skill through watching video clip
as a media will provides new educational research improve the quality
of education in the future.

D. Outline of the Research
This proposal consists of three chapters.
Chapter 1 contains the introduction covering the general
background of the study, reason for choosing topic, statements of the
problem, objectives of the study, significances of the study, and
outline of the study.
Chapter 2 discusses review of related literature covering definitions
of listening and teaching media in teaching listening
Chapter 3 discusses method of the research consist of design of
the research, subject of the study, instrument of the study, techniques
of data collecting, and techniques of data analysis .

I. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
A. LISTENING
1. Definition of Listening
Listening should be preceded by speaking. Listening is a skill
to hear and listen to what speaker said. Moreover that human first
learning language is by listening to the speech around them and
reproducing what human hear. Listening is not a passive or receptive
skill as is commonly assumed. Bachman suggests that listening is an
interactive, dynamic, interpretative process in which the listener
engages in the active construction of meaning.
Listening activities develop a wide variety of listening in
details, and inferring meaning from context. These exercises often
require complenting an authentic task while listening, such as taking
missing words in completion items, text of the song, or taking
telephone messages. The recording on the class cassetttes contain
both scripted and unscripted conversation with natural pauses,
hesitation and interruption that accur in real speech.
Listening is a very important part of learning English. It could
be seen on the following statement.
the important of listening in language teaching can hardly be
overestimated. Through reception, we internalize linguistic
impormation without which we could not produce language. In
classroom, students always do more listening than speaking.
Listening competence is universally larger than speaking
competence. Is it way wonder, then, that is recent years the language
teaching profession has placed a contert emphasis on listening
comprehension? (Brown,1994:233)

B. Media
Media is a means of communication to help transferring the
message and give power to the material presentation so it will be
understood easier and staying longer in the memory retention. Media,
nowadays, has touched all aspects in human`s life, including education.
According to Arsyad (2009:3) media are an aid needed to support
some activities in the world. Media is graph, photographic, or electronic
aids. In modern era, media are used in teaching process. Media can
support the teacherss strategies in learning process. This statement is
supported by Suyanto, he states that media are any extension of men
that allows them to affect other people who are not in face with him
(2008:100). Media are a tool of comunication and it can be a tool in
teaching process.
In teaching English, the teachers can use three kinds of media.
Suyanto (2008:100) says that there are three kinds of media; they are
visual media, audio media, and audiovisual media. Every media has
advantages. Visual media usually provides picture or photograph, but
audio media provides the sound. Audiovisual is the combination
between visual and audio media. Vedeo recorder and film are kind of
audiovisual media.

C. Teaching Media in Teaching Listening
The use of media in teaching learning process is expected to raise
the result of learning (leaning achievement). The use of media should
be adjusted with the students way of thinking. The teacher should be
guided on that 9 thinking level in choosing the media of learning.
According to Brown (1998 : 3) media should be chosen as follows :
1. Teaching purpose
2. Effectiveness of the media
3. Students skill level
4. Cost media
5. Existence of the media
6. The quality of the media
It means that the media should support the purpose of teaching, be
able to delivers a message which is meant to inform, adjusted with the
students skill level, the cost fits with the result, also the media is
attainable and has a good quality. Media of learning should also be
based on some criteria such as:
1. Attracting the students
2. Developing the students activities
3. Developing the effectiveness and the efficiency in learning
4. Increasing the knowledge over certain information
From the written texts above, it can be concluded that a good
media is important for the foreign learner. The frequency of using
media in learning the language is also the important things to support
the learning process.
According to Randall Davis (1998) that: teaching aid can be
divided into three kinds namely:
a. Audio
Teaching aid through audio can be done through MP3
Player. In teaching process through MP3 Player is interesting to the
students because the time there many students are interested to the
method so there are probability to the material which is given by
the teacher can be understood to the students.
b. Visual
Teaching aid through visual can be done through picture
and map. The general students like to the picture so if the teacher
use the picture in teaching process the students can improve their
imagination.
c. Audio Visual
Teaching aid through Audio visual can be done through
Television and video. The students are interested to the method
because the students can get information, education, and
entertainment.
Based on some theories above, the writer concludes that
teaching aid through audio, visual, and audio visual can stimulate
and express students motivation to improve their ability to listen
in English.

According to Randall Davis (1998) that:
The following ideas will help make your listening activities successful.
a. Noise
Reduce distractions and noise during the listening segment.
You may need to close doors or windows or ask the students in the
room to be quiet for a few minutes.
b. Equipment
If you are using tape recorder or MP3 player, make sure it
produces acceptable sound quality. Bring extra batteries or check
up the electricity in the class room.
c. Repetition
Read or play the text a total of 2-3 times. Tell the students
in advance you will repeat it. This will reduce their anxiety about
not catching it all the first time. You can also ask them to listen to
different information each time through.
d. Content
Unless your text is merely a list of items, talk about the
content as well as specific language used. The material should be
interesting and appropriate for your class level in topic, speed, and
vocabulary.
e. Recording Your Own Tape
Write appropriate text (or use something from your
textbook) and have another English speaker read it onto tape. Copy
the recording three times so you dont need to rewind. The reader
should not simply read three times, because students want to hear
exact repetition of the pronunciation, intonation, and pace, not just
the words.
f. Video
You can play a video clip with the sound off and ask the
students to make predictions about what dialog is taking place.
Then play it again with sound and discuss why they were right or
wrong in their predictions. You can also play the sound without the
video first, and show the video after students have guessed what is
going on.
Based on opinion above, the writer concludes that listening
activities will be successful if we follow the ideas above. They are
noise, equipment, repetition, content, recording your own tape, and
video.
Video can be used as media in teaching listening. Video clip allows
students to hear a variety of diferrent voices apart from just their own
teachers. There are many good reasons for encouraging students to
watch video clip while they listen. They will not fell study because they
watch what they like.

II. METHODOLOGY OF THE RESEARCH
A. Research Design
Research method is a significant and part of all scientific activities.
The research can be carried out wherever we want to solve. Arikunto
(2006) states that a field research or field study, for an example an
education research, can be carried out at school, in the society, factories
or hospital to educational objectives in this research the writers uses a
descriptive qualitative method, so the writer choices the observation
method to analyze what are the teaching listening using video clip of
Coldplay in a case of the eight grade students of Junior High School.

B. Subject Of The Research
1. Population
Arikunto (2006:130) states that population is the whole subject
of the research from were the data collected. The population of this
research will be the the eight grade students of junior high school
student in academic year 2013/2014 . It consists of 155 students.
They scattered into five classes (A, B, C, D, E). Class A consists of
31 students, class B consists of 31 students, class C consists of 31
students,class D consists of 30 students, and class E consists of 32
students.
2. Sample and Sampling
In this research, the writer will use cluster sampling method
and the writer chooses class D as a sample.
C. Instrument
A research instrument is the way to get a data in this study the
instrument that is used by the observation and instrument. Instrument
can indicate whether the research is successful or not. There are several
kinds of research instrument which can be used to get the data. They are
observation, interview, Arikunto (1998:138) states that an instrument is
a device or facility used in collecting the data or information so that the
works can be easily and the result can be better. In the study, the writer
will use observation sheet and interview as the instrument to get the
data.
1. Observation Sheets
Observation techniques allow the researcher to see and
observed. In this research, the population is the eight grade students
of Junior High School, and the teacher of the class. The observation
it self is done by observing the object directly, the researcher can
take some notes on behavior changes and what happen to the subject
before the researcher do the observation.
The observation help the observed to get variable data in this
section/the writer is going to discuss the other instrument of the data.
The observation technique is based on the researchs direct
experience which causes her acquire the sat by herself without others
interferences.

2. Interview
The writer will interview to the teacher to get additional how
to teach writing successfully. The researcher interviewed the teacher
consist of ten questions:
a. What do you think about ways of teaching listening using
video clip as a media?
b. What is the purpose of teaching listening using video clip?
c. What are the differences between teaching using media and
without media?
d. What will you do with the students which were interested in
video clip?
e. What is the teaching approach that you take in teaching
listening?

f. Why did you give a video clip as a media to teach listening?
g. What are the problems faced in teaching listening using video
clip?
h. Are the students understand the material given by the teacher?
i. Is the students ability influence into the teaching learning
activity?
j. What is the solution to solve the problems in teaching listening
using video clip?

D. Method Of Data Collection
Collecting data is important the writer as long as the method meet
problem. To find out the solution of the problem, the writer needs some
data. Several different method as that can be used in the collecting the
data such as observation, and, interview. There are steeps the find out
the required data for this research:
a. Before conducting the research, the writer consults to the
headmaster to know whether the students of the eight Grade
students permitted to be used as sample of him research.
b. The researcher finds out information about problems of teaching
listening a case of the eight grade students of Junior High School.
c. The researcher makes interview to the English teacher.
d. The researcher observes the teaching learning process.
e. The researcher also finds out data from some books to complete the
data source.

E. Method Of Data Analysis
Data analyzes technique used to analyze the data which taken
from the research in teaching learning process of the eight grade
students of Junior High School in the academic year 2014/ 2015.
In this qualitative research, the writer uses techniques of data
analysis when the collecting data process. The data will be transcribed
and sorted out. The irrelevant the data be discharged and the relevant
data will be organized for further description and analysis. The steps in
analysis are:
1. According with characteristic of the qualitative research is inductive;
the research design is flexible which giving opportunity the writer to
adapt easily with the context the field research.
2. Seeing setting and responds holistic, the writer interact to the
respondents in natural context until getting the valid data. The writer
gets data for experiences in the classroom. Instance for teaching
technique of teacher, classroom situation, making joke while the
teacher explains the materials.
3. In interview process, the writer is easy to understand the respondents
and face to face after that making conclusion from the result of
interview.
4. The writer analyzes the result of observation and interview the
teacher.
5. After the analyzes process the write make conclusion of this
research.
