COURIER 30SX

High performance on-stream solution

analyzer system for SX/EW applications

COURIER 30SX

Introduction

Courier 30SX is a new member of

the proven COURIER 30 family of
analyzers. It is optimized to serve
the special needs of solvent
extraction and similar processes.
Outokumpus experience from
more than 50 solution analyzer
installations since 1981 has been
taken into account when designing
this new on-stream analyzer system.
The COURIER 30SX system
analyzes samples of process
streams from solvent extraction
processes, using the field-tried
COURIER 30 family X-ray
technology to make elemental
analyses, supplemented by OTI 99
titrators to analyze supplementary
ionic contents, such as acid content.
Samples are taken from the process
using fast loops to ensure
continuous flow and availability of
fresh sample. Samples are
introduced to the analyzer via a
manifold which has built-in deaeration and thorough flushing
functions.
Analysis results from Courier 30SX
and titrators are sent to a process
control system, e.g. PROSCON
2100, via a single communication
link using established protocols.

Operator Station

Courier 30SX has an interface for

transferring information between
the analyzer and OPERATOR
STATION. The Operator Station is
used for system configuration and
calibration. It can also be used for
process data display, if there is no
DCS system on site.
Third party DCS system

Optional serial line connection is

available, based on MODBUS RTU
protocol for reading process
analysis results and analyzer status,
and control of sample sequence
(Bypass, Measurement Request).

Sample handling

The sample handling of the

COURIER 30SX is adapted to the
conditions of heap leach - solvent
extraction - electrowinning
processes.
Samples taken from process pipes,
or mixer-settler end-boxes flow in
fast loops to the analyzer location.
The sample flow rate and pipe size
are chosen to ensure that the
sample temperature remains
sufficiently high in the sample pipe.
The pressure of the sample feed to
the analyzer is recommended to be
about 0.75 bar, minimum 0.5 bar .
Samples have to be free of solids.
Samples are taken through normal
ball or diaphragm manual valves.
(shut-off valve and a valve for
flushing the pipe with water when
shutting down sample flow are
needed).

On-line titration can be integrated

in the COURIER 30SX system. The
titration of acid, or analysis of
chloride takes 5 to 7 minutes. The
system automatically allows for this
and feeds every second or third
sample to the titrators so that the
faster XRF analyzer is not slowed
down.
Calibration

Outocal calibration software is used

to manage the calibration of Courier
analyzers.

measurement time for a sample is
30 - 120 seconds. Typical total cycle
time for 12 streams is 15 - 30
minutes.

Samples

The fast loop is either pumped from

the process, to the analyzer site and
back, or flows by gravity to the
analyzer site, where it is returned to
a drain or via a common return
pump for samples of similar type.

Up to six element assays depending

on number of installed spectrometer
channels.
Up to two ionic quantities using
optional titrators.
Measurable concentration

5 ppm (5 mg/l) to 500,000 ppm

(500 g/l) (element assays)
Detection limit

Mn - Zn 2 - 8 ppm (element assays)

Precision

Recommended fast loop flow 20 50 l/min, recommended pressure at

analyzer sit 0.75 to 1.25 bar,
minimum 0.5 bar, maximum 1.75
bar.
Sample taken per cycle1 - 5 l

For many elements changes of an

order of 5 ppm can be detected at
100 ppm level with a probability of
95% for a representative sample.

Resolution

Superior resolution of crystal

spectrometers allows measurement
of almost all neighboring elements,
even if the neighboring element has
a thousand times greater content.
Accuracy

For individual measurements one

sigma relative error is typically
25% for low concentrations, and
12.5% for high concentrations
Accuracy for shift or daily averages
is better.

The COURIER 30SX can distinguish

and measure very small quantities
of trace elements in strong
electrolytes. For instance manganese
can be measured from 5 mg/l
upwards (3 standard deviation
detection limit), iron and cobalt
from 2 to 3 mg/l.

All levels of acid content met in the

process can be titrated on-line,
and chloride can be measured from
10 mg/l upwards.

Courier 30SX key analytical components

Courier 30SX excites the

sample in flow cell using low
power X-rays. Atoms in the
sample react by emitting
fluorescence radiation which
is characteristic to each
individual element in the
periodic table.
Courier 30SX uses the same
high resolution wavelength
dispersive analyzer
technology as high
performance laboratory
analyzers. This minimizes
spectrum overlaps and
makes analyzer calibration
easiear and less frequent.
