Be seeing you Alice & St eve 3 I f you havent yet made your tr avel plans for August, wer e her e to give you some mor e infor mation to help you under stand your options. I f you have alr eady made your plans, do take a look at the fir st section, which has some infor mation about tr avel- ling ar ound dur ing your stay, and at the Things To Do ar ticle, which gives some suggestions of places that you might like to visit. Ther e ar e many, many options for tr avel- ling to and ar ound London, and it can be quite confusing, even for a local. The most impor tant piece of advice that we can give you is to use the website of Transport for London, the body that over sees public tr ans- por t in the London ar ea and can help you with almost any tr avel need that you have. Loncon 3 is being held at ExCeL London, fr om Thur sday 14 August to Monday 18 August 2014. ExCeL is in Londons Dock- lands, an ar ea to the east of the city. ExCeL is ser ved by two stations on the Docklands Light Railway (DLR): Pr ince Regent (at the east end of ExCeL and closest to the space Loncon 3 is using) and Custom House (at the other end, and closest to the Novotel, I bis, I bis Styles, and Cr owne Plaza hotels). Travel Within London Londons public t r anspor t syst em is managed by Tr anspor t for London, and is gener ally well integr ated with r egular inter - changes between national r ail, the Under - gr ound (Tube), Over gr ound, the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), and the multitude of buses that cr iss-cr oss the capital. I f you plan to tr avel ar ound London by public t r anspor t dur ing your t r ip, t he easiest and most cost-effective way to do so is with an Oyster car d, a pay-as-you-go system that offer s the cheapest way to pay for single jour neys on most London tr ans- por t opt ions, as well as capping your spending on a daily basis. Oyster car ds ar e available at many Tube st at ions, including Heathr ow Air por ts Tube stations, and newsagents displaying a Ticket Stop sign wher e they can also be r etur ned for a r efund of the deposit and unused pay-as- you-go money after your last London Tr ans- por t jour ney. You can even or der one online, have it deliver ed to you, and be r eady to go as soon as you ar r ive in London! A wor d of war ning for tr aveller s fr om the USA: I f your cr edit car d is not Chip and PI N, you will not be able t o use t he Oyst er car d t op- up machines. However , t her e ar e manned ticket offices in many Tube stations. You can easily plan your jour neys online, either at the Tr anspor t for London website or thr ough other applications and websites such as Google Maps. Travelling to Loncon 3 Not this oyster - by Sue Mason over a touch in and touch out tur nstile backgr ound photo by J oshua Kaufman 4 The London Underground The Tube is such a par t of the backgr ound life of being a Londoner that its tr icky to r emember all the wr itten and unwr itten r ules for its use. Her e ar e a few things to r emember , though. On the escalator s, you will see signs telling you to stand on the r ight. They r eally mean it : one of t he f ew ways t o get Londoner s to speak to a str anger on the Tube is to stand on the left and block the escalator , although its mor e likely that people will just for m a silent ly fuming queue behind you. A war ning to mind the gap means that you might have to step over a chasm only mar ginally nar r ower t han t he Valles Mar iner is in or der to get on or off the tr ain. I f you think that you might have tr ouble, aim for the door s at the ends of car r iages, wher e the gap will be smaller . The London Under gr ound Map is, r ightly, a design classic. A schematic r epr esentation of the London tr anspor tation networ k, its a wor k of ar t even if its not always entir ely accur ate in the geogr aphical sense. All the lines ar e named and r epr esent ed by a differ ent colour on the map. I nter changes ar e all clear ly mar ked and will be well- signed at stations. On the other hand, not all tr ains go to the end of the line, and some lines bifur cate, so you need to check wher e the tr ains ar e ter minating, and listen for the announcements once your e onboar d. I n most cases, the Tube uses a single tunnel system. That means that the line going in one dir ection will not necessar ily be close to the line going in the other , so you might sometimes have a bit of a walk between them. I f you use the Tr anspor t for London J our ney Planner , you can get infor - mat ion on int er change t imes, including 5 * walking dist ances and t he pr esence of stair s. Alt hough it is impr oving, t he Tube networ k isnt gr eat for people with mobility pr oblems. Most stations have at least some steps to negotiate unless they ar e mar ked with a small wheelchair symbol on the Tube map. Again, check the J our ney Planner for infor mation about the likely obstacles that you will face. Docklands Light Railway The DLR is a dr iver less light r ail syst em, which means t hat you can have gr eat fun pr et ending t o dr ive t he t r ain as long as your e quick enough t o beat t he small childr en t o t he fr ont seat . I t s also fully wheelchair accessible, which is an impr ovement over the Tube. The most impor tant thing to r emember when tr avel- ling by DLR is that ExCeL has two DLR stations, Cust om House and Pr ince Regent. Pr ince Regent is closest to the space that Loncon 3 will be using. Also, although ther e ar e a number of DLR lines, if you need to change tr ains to get to ExCeL, you will pr obably need to do so at Canning Town and get on a tr ain towar ds Beckton. Buses London has a significant bus networ k, with hundr eds of r outes ar ound the city. I t can be a little daunting, so we r ecommend that you check your r oute befor e you star t a jour ney. Most centr al London bus stops have infor mation about the bus r outes that ser ve them, and many of them also have maps that show all of the r outes in the local ar ea. I f your e getting a bus fr om a busy ar ea, all of the bus stops will be labelled with a differ ent letter so that you can find the cor r ect one mor e easily. You can no longer pay cash and buy a ticket fr om the dr iver of a bus. You need to either use an Oyster car d or a contactless payment debit or cr edit car d. I n some par ts of centr al London, you can use cash to buy a ticket fr om a r oadside machine. Taxis London has lots of taxi options, fr om the famous black cabs thr ough to mini-cabs and I nter net car ser vices. Black Cabs The Hackney Car r iage or black cab is one of the icons of London, and a r ide in one is pr obably essential for fir st-time visitor s to the city. J ust to be confusing, not all black cabs ar e black, or shaped like the tr adi- tional black cabs. You can identify them by the or ange TAXI sign on the r oof; if its illu- minated, the cab is available for hir e. Black cab dr iver s go thr ough extensive tr aining, memor ising major landmar ks and hotels as well as differ ent r outes acr oss London, bef or e t hey can r eceive t heir licence. Ther efor e, unfor t unat ely only a limited number of black cabs ar e on the r oads, and so they come at a pr ice. They ar e, however , the only ker bside ser vice avail- able, and they will get you wher e you want to go. At busy times, you might str uggle to find a black cab for hir e on the str eet. Smar tphone apps such as Hailo can put you in touch with near by dr iver s, who can then come to collect you: especially handy when its wet! I t gets bor ing dr iving ar ound London all day, so black cab dr iver s often like to chat. They also tend to have opinions. Political opinions. You have been war ned. 6 Mini-cabs Pr ivate car ser vices ar e available all over London, but they cant pick you up on the str eet. I nstead, either telephone a local ser vice (most bar s and r estaur ants will be able to give you a number ) or find one of their offices, which will usually have an or ange light outside to make it easier to spot. Mini-cabs ar e substantially cheaper than black cabs, and you can usually agr ee on your far e befor e the star t of the jour ney. On the downside, you have no guar antee that the dr iver will be able to find your destination! Although ther e has been a cr ackdown on unlicensed mini-cabs, they do still exist. Make sur e not to get in any cab stopping on the str eet to offer you a r ide unless it is a black cab. Ser vices like Uber ar e available in London, but youll need to download their smar tphone apps to use them. At night in the ver y centr al par ts of London your e also likely to see bicycle r ickshaws for hir e. Theyr e gr eat fun but ver y expensive! Air Travel London has five six air por ts [check that they havent opened another one befor e we go to pr essEd] , all wit h differ ent ly good tr anspor t links to the centr e of the city. I f your e coming dir ect fr om the US, you ar e likely to ar r ive at London Heathr ow or London Gatwick. Ar r ivals fr om other Eur o- pean or Br itish air por ts might come into Luton, Stansted, or London City instead. Because London City Air por t is liter ally in walking distance of ExCeL, tr y to fly out of or change planes at an air por t that offer s dir ect f light s t o London Cit y, such as Amst er dam Schiphol, Dublin, Fr ankfur t , Madr id, or Zur ich. ExCeL has a handy web page that pr ovides suggested air r outes fr om var ious cities in Eur ope and Nor th Amer ica. London Heathrow Somet imes descr ibed as five shopping malls with a r unway attached, Heathr ow is a bit of a beast. I ts infamous for passpor t lines, flight delays, lost luggage, and ever y- thing else you expect fr om a major air por t. On the br ight side, you can buy Duty Fr ee after youve passed thr ough customs, and thats always a good time to buy one of the comically sized Tobler ones that appar ently only get sold in air por ts. Once youve escaped fr om Heathr ow, you have a number of options for the r est of your jour ney. I n descending or der of pr ice, they ar e: By taxi: Dont do this. I t will cost you at least 100 and take well over an hour to get to ExCeL. On the Heathrow Express, a fast tr ain ser vice that leaves Heathr ow ever y 15 minutes and, for 28 each way, gets you into Paddington Station 15 minutes later . Ther e ar e stations at Ter minals 1/ 2/ 3 and Ter minal 5, but not Ter minal 4. On the Heathrow Connect, a r egular tr ain ser vice that leaves Heathr ow ever y 30 minutes and, for 9.90 one-way or 19.80 r etur n, gets you into Paddington Station 25 minutes later . Ther e ar e stations at Ter minals 1/ 2/ 3 and Ter minal 4, but not Ter minal 5. On the Tube (ther e ar e stations at all ter minals. Yay!), which will take ar ound an hour to get into centr al London or ninety minutes to get to ExCeL (star ting on the Picadilly line, at Gr een Par k tr ans- fer r ing t o t he east bound J ubilee line towar ds Str atfor d or West Ham, then switching at Canning Town to the DLR towar ds Beckton). The Tube might not be the best option if you have a lot of bags but it will only cost you about 6; less if you have an Oyster car d. London Gatwick Gatwick is smaller than Heathr ow, but may well be busy in August with holiday-maker s. The best option for tr avelling fr om the air por t into London is to take the Gatwick Express tr ain ser vice. I t ar r ives at Victor ia Station, and takes about 30 minutes. Tickets cost 19.90 one-way or 34.90 r etur n, but you can save some money by booking online. However , if you want to tr avel dir ectly fr om Gatwick to ExCeL, you should avoid the Gatwick Expr ess and take a Fir st Capital Connect ser vice to London Br idge (10 for a one-way jour ney), wher e its easier to get to ExCeL either by Tube and DLR (J ubilee line eastbound, then switching at Canning Town to the DLR towar ds Beckton) or by taxi (ar ound 25). 7 8 London City London City Air por t is ver y close to ExCeL. I f you want to take a taxi fr om the air por t to your hot el, t he f ar e will be 5- 10, depending on which hotel you need. Unfor tunately, London City Air por t is on a differ ent br anch of the DLR fr om ExCeL. I f you want to use it, you will have to tr avel west to Canning Town and then change to a tr ain going towar ds Beckton. The 473 bus r uns dir ect fr om t he air por t t o Pr ince Regent at the east end of ExCeL (close to the convention, but not necessar ily to your hotel). You can also walk fr om the air por t: its ar ound a mile to ExCeL, but check a map to find the best r oute to your hotel. Other Airports London Stansted is quite a way out of town, but it does have one of the longest civilian r unways in the UK: when the space shuttle visited us, this is wher e it landed! The Stansted Express tr ain ser vice will take you to Liver pool Str eet Station in about 50 minutes, at a cost of 23.40 one-way or 33.20 r etur n. (Var ious Under gr ound/ DLR options fr om ther e, e.g. Centr al line west- bound, then switching at Bank to the DLR towar ds Beckton.) I f you can, its pr obably best to avoid flying into London Luton. The jour ney into centr al London involves a bus and an infr equent t r ain ser vice t hat t akes 40 minut es, or t her es a coach ser vice t hat could t ake anything fr om thir ty minutes to an hour . I f you do fly into Luton, take a Fir st Capital Connect tr ain t hr ough cent r al London t o London Br idge. Fr om ther e you can get to ExCeL either by Tube and DLR ( J ubilee line east - bound, t hen swit ching at Canning Town t o t he DLR t owar ds Beckt on) or by t axi (ar ound 25). Although youve pr obably never hear d of London Southend, its actually quite easy to get fr om ther e to ExCeL: take a tr ain to Str atfor d and then jump on the DLR! Rail Travel International Eur ostar tr ain ser vices fr om Br ussels and Par is ar r ive at St Pancr as I nt er nat ional station in centr al London. However , if your t r ain st ops at Ashfor d I nt er nat ional or Ebbsfleet I nter national, you can change to the high-speed ser vice to Str atfor d I nter na- tional station, and fr om ther e you can take the DLR. Youll need a separ ate ticket for that par t of the jour ney, as your inter na- tional ticket wont be valid at Str atfor d. National Dif f er ent t r ain companies oper at e on differ ent r out es, and t her e ar e a wide var iet y of t icket opt ions depending on when you t r avel, how far in advance you want t o book, and t he specific r out e you t ake. The best value t icket s usually go on sale 12 weeks befor e t he dat e of t r avel, so pr ices befor e t hen might seem quit e high. I t s best t o make a seat r eser vat ion for longer jour neys wher e t hese ar e available, especially if your e planning t o t r avel on a specific t r ain. You can check tr ain times and book tickets online thr ough National Rail. Anyone fr om outside the UK whos plan- ning quite a lot of tr ain tr avel dur ing their tr ip to Loncon 3 might want to consider buying a Britrail pass. Ar t : Br ad W. Fost er 9 Travel by Road I f youd pr efer to be dr iven than to dr ive, you might want to check out coach tr avel. Many UK coach ser vices t o and f r om London oper ate via Victor ia Coach Station in centr al London. I f youd like t o dr ive your self, we r ecommend t hat you t hink again. I f your e planning t o hir e a car t o t r avel ar ound t he count r y eit her befor e or aft er t he convention, r emember that public tr anspor t and t axis ar e a much bet t er , and cheaper , way of get t ing ar ound near ExCeL and in centr al London gener ally: it might be easier to hir e the car only dur ing the per iod when you need it. I f you still want to dr ive, ExCeL has plenty of car par king spaces, which cost 15 per day. We r ecommend that you use either the under gr ound car par k (either the or ange or pur ple zones ar e fine, but par k as far east as you can) or t he East car par k. 124 of t he par king spaces under neat h ExCeL ar e r eser ved for disabled visitor s (who will need t o br ing t heir Blue Badge per mit s, if UK r esident s) . Alt hough some hot els adver t ise par king spaces for their guests, ther e might be a char ge for par king and the number of spaces might be limit ed, so do check in advance. You can find dr iving inst r uct ions on ExCeLs website, but the shor t ver sion is that you should nicely ask your sat nav to take you to E16 1DR. For somewher e the size of t he ExCeL, having t he capabilit y t o call people and send SMS messages is going to be ver y useful indeed and if you want to take advant age of t he dat a funct ions of a smar tphone, youll need to plan ahead. Especially for visit or s fr om t he USA, t he cost s of int er nat ional r oaming can be ext r emely high. This ar t icle pr ovides some opt ions for you t o consider . ( All pr ices ar e given in appr oximate US dollar s.) Option 1: Enable Phone, Text and Data Roaming With Your Carrier Cer tainly the simplest option, but check your car r ier for pr ices. The cost per call can be as high as $1/ min or mor e, $0.50 per SMS sent and r eceived, and $5 per MB of data. I f you have T-Mobile then your e in luck. T-Mobile char ges only $0.20 per minute for calls, and SMS messages and 3G data ar e fr ee when r oaming in t he UK. T-Mobile ar e pushing t o t ake on new cust omer s at t he moment , so if your e t hinking of a new phone, now might be time to consider it. Option 2: Get a Local SIM Card I f you have a SI M enabled phone and it s unlocked, consider buying a local SI M car d in a phone st or e or vending machine at Heat hr ow or pr et t y much anywher e in London. Ther e ar e far , far mor e phone r etail options in the UK. Typically youll pay $0.20 per minute, with $0.10 or less per text and a fixed char ge per day for dat a. Ther e ar e at least half a dozen differ ent options available and its wor th looking online ahead of time to see which is the best. I n or der to use a SI M car d, you must have an unlocked phone. I f you ar e not paying for your phone in your cont r act , get t ing it unlocked is not difficult . However , if t he phone is under contr act, you might void the war r ant y or your cont r act by get t ing your phone unlocked. Check with your car r ier . Option 3: Get a Burner I f you just want a phone to use to call fr iends and send text messages note that an entr y- level phone costs about $30 and you can pick and chose t he car r ier ser vice you want . I n addit ion, an ent r y-level Andr oid phone at some phone shops goes for about $75 new. Option 4: Get a Burner (see #3) and Use WiFi for Data WiFi will be fr ee t hr oughout ExCeL. Although WiFi is widely available in the UK, it s not always clear wher e it s available or that you need to sign into a por tal to use it. Typically, you will see a sign t hat says Power ed by The Cloud or Power ed by BT Openwor ld. Many bar s and coffee shops have fr ee WiFi, but signing in can be awkwar d, and you will oft en need t o r emember the user name and passwor d you set up for these ser vices. Eating in the UK: Cultural Differences - Shana Worthen and the Restaurant Guide Team Tipping is incr easingly r ecommended in the UK, alt hough it isnt mandat or y since st aff ar e all paid at least the minimum wage; its not legal for an employer to use tips to top up wages t o t he legal minimum. I t s r espect able t o leave a 10% t ip if ser vice war r ant s one, but many r est aur ant s now include a default 12.5% ser vice char ge on the bill. Doggy bags for left over s ar e not gener ally available, unless your e eating in a place which also does takeout. Tap water is appr opr iate to r equest even at high-end r est aur ant s. I t is not usually ser ved with ice. When dr inking in a gr oup in a pub, dr inks ar e oft en bought in r ounds: one per son buys dr inks for the entir e gr oup; then another per son takes a tur n. Tea comes wit h milk by default , if it s a dr ink. Tea can also, confusingly, r efer t o the evening meal, a use of nor ther n or igin. Aft er noon t ea is usually called so, whet her with a scone and clotted cr eam or a whole t ower of sandwiches and cakes. Pies ar e gener ally savour y, not sweet, e.g. por k pie. A caf may be a coffee shop, or it may be a gr easy spoon. Gr easy spoons ar e small, cheap r estaur ants, involving knives and for ks as well. Theyr e usually good for fr y-ups (a fr ied br eakfast ) and bacon but t ies ( bacon sandwiches). Also known as caffs. When your e shopping for snacks, be sur e t o check out t he huge r ange of differ ent flavour s of cr isps ( pot at o chips, for t he Atlanticly-challenged among you). I ts quite nor mal t o see a dozen or mor e differ ent flavour s: be sur e t o t r y out Mar mit e, r osemar y, lemon, and bacon flavour s if you get the chance. Remember t hat t hings wit h booze or coffee flavour s (e.g. tir amisu) will have actual booze or coffee in them! 10 11 Hotel Update The hot el sit uat ion is much t he same as was r epor t ed in t he pr evious Pr ogr ess Repor t . The on- sit e hot els ar e f ully booked, but we expect t hat t her e will be some cancellat ions, and it s wor t h per iodically checking t he Infotel website if you especially want a r oom on the ExCeL site.
