SHIFT in political tectonic plates, is

stimulating new opportunities for the
business and trade relationship between India
and New Zealand, Trade Minister Tim Groser
told delegates at the 2014 India New Zealand
Business Council summit in Auckland this
week.
Mr Grosers talk in the Business Beyond
Barriers symposium highlighted the emerging
changes India will see, with new Prime
Minister, Modi [who] has a clear cut mandate
for change, Mr Groser said.
The 2014 Business Summit, hosted by the
India New Zealand Business Council, took
place July 8 at the Pullman Hotel in Auckland.
The INZBC Summit was made up of four
symposiums, all of which were encompassed
by the overall theme, Business Beyond Barriers.
Each symposium hosted an array of esteemed
speakers, including Steven Joyce; Tim Ng of
The Treasury; Indian High Commissioner Ravi
Thapar; Andrew Paykel of Fisher and Paykel
and Peter Bull of Education New Zealand.
The 2014 Business Summit was hosted
by MC Fran OSullivan; whose effortless onstage presence and vast business knowledge
supported the events dynamic and engaging
feel.
The summit started strong with esteemed
speakers taking the stage to share their insights
regarding trade relations between New Zealand
and India.
Mr Thapar spoke in the first symposium,
saying, Everything about New Zealand seems
to be about generating better trade relations.

how to get the best produce, land, agriculture

defined the overall topic of the day, improving

and strengthening the relationship between the
two nations, a strategic venture in itself.
Warren Young of Zespri also spoke during
the Strategic Ventures session, ending his talk
by saying, You need to adapt to succeed in
India, wonderful advice from a company who
have broken barriers in India against all odds.
Bill Jolly summed up the important and reemerging role of India in business, saying,
[India] is a strategically important relationship
to New Zealand.
The final session of the 2014 Business
Summit heard several highly regarded
speakers present their views and experiences
on Sustainable Growth. Speakers from this
symposium included Tim Ng of Treasury,
Aaron Jenkins of NZX, and Jo Pennycuick,
managing director of Redesign.
Jo Pennycuick presented a compelling
talk, demonstrating the successes of Redeign,
including the full redesign of Delhi Airport, the
design of the worlds largest candy store, and
the creation of international branches in India
and further abroad. Her talk highlighted the
potential of sustainable growth and business
success in India, as well as inspiring the
audience to embrace challenges and charge
through business barriers.
The summits themes were demonstrated
by knowledgeable speakers who presented
valuable lessons and business wisdom in their
speeches, to the enthusiastic audience who
enjoyed four symposiums, each based around
trade relationship development between India
and New Zealand. The Business Summit was a
perfect way to honour 25 years of the India New
Zealand Business Council, and the growing
relationship between India and New Zealand.

Community seeks solutions to migrant woes

Swati Sharma

he message was loud and clear: listen to our

plea.
That was the underlying concern for scores
of Indian community organisations and leaders
who gathered in Auckland last week to voice their
grievances to political leaders.
The Kiwi Indian Conclave 2014, organised
by the New Zealand Indian Central Association,
attracted more than 150 attendees at the Ellerslie
Events Centre.
The issues: Migrant Indians have been facing
difficulties in their adopted homeland and the
organisers wanted action on their concerns from
political leaders ahead of the general election in
September.
All the politicians were asked for their
responses on 18 different issues that directly
influence Indians in New Zealand. These issues
included Security concerns, Educational parity,
Equal employment opportunities, Capital gains
tax, International students concern, Bilateral trade,
Domestic violence, Health , New immigrants,
Home ownership, Overseas investment, List MPs,
Voluntary retirement, Multicultural NZ, Shortage
of Doctors, Superannuation, NZ as a republic and
Language.
It happened for the first time in history that
Kiwi Indians have come out to speak on the issues.
Around 15O Kiwi Indians put forward their wish
list in front of political parties. All major political
parties were invited to the event, including

-Phill Goff,
Labour Party

National, Labour, Internet Mana, Green, New

Zealand First and Maori Party. While NZ first and
Maori parties were absent from the event, the other
parties made a significant presence to the event.
Veer Khar, President of Manukau Indian
Association and Chairman of NZICA, who
was the main organiser of the event, says that
Indian community has a participatory role
in their country of adoption - New Zealand.
He said, Community has learnt how to pass
their message. We want you to consider us
(community people) important.
Taking in concern the recent killing of
dairy owner Arun Kumar, the political leaders
agreed that strong actions must be taken in
order to reduce such crimes and ensure a safe
environment for the community.
Labour party spokesman Phill Goff, talking
on the non-recognition of Indian education
degrees by New Zealand employers, strongly
condemned the point system of New Zealand
government. He said, You need to change

the point system or you need to recognise the

qualifications.
Indian weekender regularly receives
feedback from migrant who feel that they are not
able to get employments even after having well
recognised Indian educational degrees.
Minister of Justice Judith Collins and
Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi representing National
party, said that many Indians are with National
party and they represent community in the
parliament. Collins said that their party is doing
well and can do even better.
Phill Goff said that their party will focus on
security concerns. He said, I am satisfied with
the punishment policies. But I must rather stop
crimes than punishing.
Green Party spokesperson Jan Logie and
Internet- Mana Party candidate Roshni sami, also
addressed the issues of concern and promised
better regulations to deal with the problems of
the community.

he Kiwi Indian Conclave was a really

useful forum to interact with the Indian
community on issues, to hear their concerns
and address their questions.
The questions were on important topics.
Top of the list in the wake of the tragic deaths
of Blessie Gotingco and Arun Kumar was
community safety and the impact of cuts in
policing. The increasing difficulty facing first
home buyers, recognition of the qualifications
of new migrants, maintaining heritage
languages for future generations and opening
up trade with India to match our free trade
agreement with China were also issues.
I enjoyed the opportunity to set out Labour?s
positive policies in these areas, within the time
constraints that were regrettably necessary.
Congratulations to the organisers for the
efforts to promote democratic participation
and accountability from their elected
representatives.

istory was created today when about 150

strong Kiwi Indian leadership representing
various associations and focus groups put
forward their wish list in front of political parties
seeking engagement for empowerment.
This exercise of getting on one platform and
delivering a coherent verdict lays the foundation
of Kiwi Indian politics for hence forth. The
leaders emphasized that they feel neglected and
exploited by the very political system that they
are so keen to engage with. Message was sent
loud and clear and the great outcome was that the
political parties repeatedly assured that they will
make an extra effort to engage.
The professionalism of the event
management, quality of the deliberations, wide
participation, timeliness of the structured event
and facility provisions were highly acclaimed by
all present. Indian community has a participatory
role in their country of adoption - New Zealand
and the community will do what it takers.

t was a privilege to be invited to the first KiwiIndian Conclave. The event was very helpful
in providing the opportunity for both formal
interactions by panel discussion, as well as
informal discussion and networking, while also
enjoying the lunch provided of delicious Indian
food! There were 18 well considered questions
raised on a variety of topics relevant to the Indian
community, though security issues stood out
among them, particularly in reflection upon the
tragic death of Arun Kumar. Internet MANA has
a particular focus on young people, it was great
to see a few in attendance and asking questions,
as well as to make contact with the national
women?s organisation. As Laila mentioned in
her speech at the forum, consultation processes
need to ?move beyond treating constituencies
like ATM machines, and to reach meaningful
interaction on policy?. Going forward, as we
approach some of the policy issues raised, we
now have contact points and look forward to
working in consultation with Kiwi-Indians who
call NZ home!

The Kiwi Indian Conclave

Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi

ew Zealand is a bright, vibrant and

multicultural country The Kiwi Indian
community has contributed hugely to the
cultural and economic landscape of our country.
A strong country is a sum of its parts.
The National-led government is building
a strong and inclusive nation with incentives
which reward hard work and back our ability to
take on the world and win.
Our ethnic communities are integral to this
- were working hard to make it easier for new
migrants and their families to integrate quickly
and successfully into life in NZ.
The diversity of our population is one of our
greatest strengths - especially when marketing
Kiwi businesses offshore. At the recently
held Indian Conclave the Indian community
shared some concerns. Due to lack of time at
the conclave I wasnt able to respond on the
concerns of our community however, by way
of this column I hope to do so now.
National is working hard to keep our
families safer. About half of all homicides in
New Zealand are a result of family violence,
and about half of all violent offence charges in
the courts relate to family violence.. We want
to ensure home is a safe place for all women,
children, and men, and ensure victims are not
re-victimised.
Weve announced a cross-Government
package to strengthen efforts across Justice,
Police, Corrections, and Courts to improve the
safety of family violence victims and make
services more responsive to their individual
needs.
We will establish a Chief Victims Advisor to
advise the Minister of Justice on the needs and

views of victims of crime.

I expect to see a lot of positive change
resulting from these reforms, including
improvements in culture, systems, and
outcomes for families. Our initiatives will
improve awareness, support, and protection for
victims, and will make them strong.
Youth crime has fallen 22 per cent in two
years, and the number of young people facing
court charges is at the lowest level in 20 years..
Last year we announced a new youth crime
target, as part of our drive to deliver better
public services. Our target is to reduce youth
offending 25 per cent by 2017 because we had
already exceeded our earlier target of a 5 per
cent reduction.
National is taking action and achieving
results. The Government has also set up the
Youth Crime Action Plan, which has set the
broad direction for youth justice over the next
ten years. We are focussed on engaging with
communities, reducing escalation and creating

early and sustained exits from the youth justice

system. As a party we understand that the
biggest impact can be made by focussing on
the drivers of crime. There are many factors
behind youth offending and so government
agencies are working together with providers
and families at the local level to get to the heart
of some of these.
National is committed to providing
opportunities for our youth and migrants.
We are committed to attracting skilled talent
from overseas in areas where there are skill
shortages. We have now awarded fifteen top
Indian students scholarships worth $150,000
to study in programmes directly related to
the Christchurch rebuild. The students will
begin their masters and postgraduate diplomas
fields like earthquake engineering, mechanical
engineering and construction management in
July and February.
While we cant dictate what kind of people
are employed by businesses, we can do our best
to make sure as many as possible are aware of
the benefits that ethnic diversity and can bring
to the workplace particularly in terms of
experience in overseas markets and also with
networking.
We have leadership programmes focussed
on arming ethnic migrants with the tools they
need to put themselves forward for leadership
positions. We are also working on a new
approach to attract and retain migrants with the
skills that the regions need and ensure they are
successful in the workplace. As part of this new
approach INZ is making changes to improve
services to customers not reduce them. From
July all settlement information, both New
Zealand-wide and regionally-specific, will
be located on one website instead of the 18
different sites that customers currently navigate.

India and New Zealand have a very strong
relationship, underpinned by the strong
people-to-people links shared between our
two countries.. We are working to eliminate
exploitation of international students by
introducing the immigration Amendment Bill
(No 2). This will introduce heavy penalties,
including deportation, for migrant bosses
or business owners who exploit workers.
Immigration New Zealand officials will also
be given greater tools to crack down on worker
abuse.
As a young person it is never east to buy
a first home. But there is no silver bullet for
housing affordability National is focused
on tackling the root causes. The best way to
make housing more affordable is to increase
the supply. To help this we introduced special
housing accords which will speed up housing
development and the consent process with the
help of local councils. We are also helping
first home buyers get a foot in the door of
their first home by increasing eligibility for the
KiwiSaver First Home Deposit Subsidy and
Welcome Home Loans.
The Government aims to provide a
superannuation which is fair for both seniors
and taxpayers. For individuals who live in
New Zealand only some part of the year or
those who want to live in another country, you
may still be able to receive all or part of your
NZ Superannuation (or Veterans Pension). It
will depend on where you plan to move and
how long you have lived in New Zealand. We
recommend contacting the Senior Services
International team before you leave.

New
Zealand
Indian
Central
Association (NZICA) Inc. established in
1926 have worked relentlessly in the last
88 years creating a good living environment
for kiwi Indians and migrant Indians in New
Zealand. We have had a conclave to give
opportunity to various Indian organisations
representing around 160,000 Indians from
various Associations to ask Political Parties
about their stance or policies for some of the
issues faced by them.
Events like these are very important
as it gives an opportunity to have an open
dialogue and put your concerns forward.
This event was organised by NZICA and
hosted by one of its branch Manukau
Indian Association and was the first one
of a kind where representatives of various
Indian organisations collectively put their
suggestions or issues forward.
Various questions were raised by about
150 strong kiwi Indian leaders representing
various associations included security
concerns, Equal Employment Opportunities,
Capital Gains Tax, Bilateral Trade, Domestic
Violence, health, Migrating and Overseas
Investment. The issues were addressed by
each Political Party leader and there were
reps from National, Labour, Internet Mana,
Green, New Zealand First and Maori Party.
The main aim of the conclave was to get
all Indian representatives on one platform
so that they can present their wish list to
these parties. The Message was sent very
clear to get the engagement of the Indian
communities and organisations with these
parties and the outcome was that political
parties repeatedly assured that they will
make an extra effort to engage.

The recommendations we have made will

Politics runs in my blood: Priyanca Radhakrishnan

riyanca Radhakrishnan, the newcomer in

the Labour Partys list for elections has been
ranked No. 23 in the list. She might be a new hope
for Indian Communities, for raising their concerns
in Parliament but only after the party polls 31.6%
or more.
In an exclusive interview to Indian
Weekenders Swati Sharma, she talks about her
family, work and future plans.
Swati Sharma: What is your feeling about
this selection?
Priyanca Radhakrishnan: I am honoured to
be ranked so highly on the Labour Party list, and
it is a great responsibility too one that I take
seriously. I feel it also sends a clear message to our
ethnic minority communities that Labour takes
us seriously and wants to see our communities
well represented in Parliament.
SS: Have you been with the Labour party
before?
PR: I joined the Party in 2006 and since then
I have worked hard, contributing to our internal
policy development process and have been active
at the local and regional Party organizational
levels. I have also campaigned actively, at the last
two General Elections, to increase our Party vote.
SS: Your ranking in the list is quite high and
hence there are good chances of you to get into
parliament. What do you have to say on that?
PR: I look forward to getting into Parliament
and working hard to do my bit to ensure that
New Zealand is a better, fairer country for all of
us. I also look forward to being able to provide
our ethnic communities with a strong voice in
Parliament and working with my colleagues to
make New Zealand a safer country.
SS: Tell me something about your family.
Where are you from, who are there in your

family, what made you step into the politics?

PR: I have an extremely supportive family
and truly, if this had not been the case, I probably
would not be here today. I was born in Chennai,
India but my family is from Kerala. I grew up
in Singapore, but used to go back to India every
year over the school holidays. My parents moved
back to India 15 years ago and currently live
in Chennai. My sister and her husband live in
Canada. I am married to a wonderful man who
has supported me every step of the way and
continues to do so. He grew up in Christchurch
and we were married in 2010 in Hanmer Springs.
I am grateful to him and my in-laws for their love
and support throughout this journey.
I suspect politics runs in my blood. My great
grandfather was very active in left wing progressive
politics in India, and played an instrumental role
in the formation of the state of Kerala. My parents
taught me to value social justice, and to lead my
life with integrity, working to support those who
are more vulnerable than I. Soon after I moved
to New Zealand as an International student, I was

elected the International Students Officer on the

Massey University Students Association that
was my first experience of running a campaign
and being elected to a position!
I chose to enter politics through the Labour
Party a couple of years ago for a few different
reasons. Firstly, I am grateful to have been offered
a number of opportunities when I migrated to
New Zealand, and I want to give something back
to this country that I now call home. Secondly, I
have spent most of my working life advocating
for positive change; I see this move as a natural
next step. Finally, I believe that I have the skills
and experience to be able to contribute effectively
to New Zealands political decision-making and
to serve our ethnic communities in Parliament.
SS: What is your role/work as Ministry of
Womens Affairs policy analyst?
PR: Policy analysts identify and define
problems, gather evidence to find solutions to
these problems and suggest policy solutions to
the Government of the day. That is, we looked at
policies and legislation that was being developed
by other Government agencies, and analysed
whether they made life better or worse for women.
SS: How long have you been a part of
Shakti? What do feel about current situation
of migrant women in New Zealand?
PR: I worked with Shakti Community Council
Inc. (Shakti) for close to six years. Working with
Shakti gave me an in-depth understanding of the
issue of violence against ethnic minority women and
the types of support our women and children need
to be safe. Violence against women is a significant
issue for all New Zealanders, and I feel that a lot
more needs to be done to keep all women, including
our ethnic women, safe from violence.
SS: If got selected as MP, what would be your

main focus? What do you expect to do?

PR: I want to be a strong voice for our ethnic
communities in Parliament. To me this means
being a strong advocate for our people so that the
issues we face are brought to light and addressed.
It also means ensuring that the contributions that
our communities make to New Zealand society,
are valued. I am passionate about ensuring that
everyone is able to live with dignity that means
better paid jobs, more time with their families,
quality education and equitable access to justice
and healthcare. I am also passionate about safety
and justice for migrant workers who are too
often made to work long hours for lesser pay, for
our small business owners who should be able to
go to work without fearing for their lives, and for
our women and children.
SS: Party poll of 31.6% is required to get you
into parliament. What do you think, how easy or
difficult it would be?
PR: Labour has excellent policies, and many
more will be made public in the next few months.
As a Party, we believe in fairness for everyone,
regardless of background and I am sure that will
resonate with voters. If voters realize that they have
a choice, and exercise that choice on September 20, I
am confident that Labour will poll well. I have already
started getting out and about and meeting with as
many people as I can so that they can get to know
me. If voters see me as a credible representative, and
would like me to get into Parliament, then they need
to get out there on September 20 and make sure their
voices are heard.
There are a number of issues I am passionate
about, especially in the areas of social development
and justice and I look forward to being part of a
team that brings about positive change for New
Zealand.

2014
International Eid Food
Festival is being organised
for Sunday August 17th at the
Kelston Community Centre,
Awaroa Park from 9.30 to
5.30p.m. This event marks
the end of the holy month of
fasting called Ramadhan. The
celebrations will bring together
diverse inter nationalities, their
foods and traditions in one
space. With almost 1.5 million
people in Auckland and events
such as Pasifika, Lantern and
Diwali festivals with an even
larger Christmas celebrations, it is timely to
celebrate the 40 plus ethnically diverse Muslim
nationalities that live in the wider Auckland
region.
We are very proud of our partnership
with the Auckland Council, especially the
Henderson Massey and Whau local Boards
to achieve peace building and understanding
amongst people, says Anne Pala, past Chair
of Waitakere Ethnic Board and a founding
member of the Auckland Council Ethnic
Peoples Advisory Panel.
As a local community advocate, she has
collaborated with the West community to
bring successful events such as the Inaugural
Diwali and the International Race Relations
Day. Fun and festivities bring much needed
social inclusion and social stability. This is a
further effort from like minded people keen to
showcase prominence in inter-cultural, interethnic diversity and to appreciate change,
challenge and celebrations, says Anne. The

Association of New Zealand (CANZ) for
South Auckland Prison. CANZ is the biggest
Union of Prison Officers in New Zealand
and works to protect the rights and working

West Auckland is proud of its diversity. It
is about sharing the tastes and smells of many
countries, which we hope to bring together
such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Morocco,
India, Somalia and Fiji just to mention a few.
The event is also about creating opportunities to
share, integrate and participate in understanding
each other in a secular city. Space creation is
peace creation. With many rich values and
cultures we need to immerse and adapt to our
new lifestyles in a migrant city, says Anne.
Saturday August 16th is the opening night
and kicks off with a Women Who Inspire
Awards and Dinner evening. It is a celebration
of sisters. Dame Susan Devoy, Race Relations
Commissioner of the Human Rights Office is
our Chief Guest speaker for the evening.
Organisations are welcomed to join in
the celebrations by way of hiring space for

Working together to stop family violence

Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi

he high rate of family violence in New

Zealand is unacceptable.
While we have the lowest crime rate in 35
years, violent crime is not falling as fast.
About half of all homicides in New Zealand
are a result of family violence, and about half of
all violent offence charges in the courts relate to
family violence.
Addressing our nations high rate of family
violence is a crucial part of our commitment to

deliver better public services for New Zealand

families. We want to ensure home is a safe place
for all women, children, and men, and ensure
victims are not re-victimised.
Weve announced a cross-Government
package to strengthen efforts across Justice,
Police, Corrections, and Courts to improve the
safety of family violence victims and make
services more responsive to their individual needs.
We will establish a Chief Victims Advisor to
advise the Minister of Justice on the needs and
views of victims of crime.
We will trial an intensive case management
service to provide specialist support for family
violence victims at high risk of serious harm or

Why New Zeland First?

Mahesh Bindra

ast month, the community bode farewell to

Arun Kumar-a perfect husband, son, father
and a law-abiding, tax-paying New Zealander of
Indian origin! Arun was brutally murdered while
he was going about doing his business, trying to
make a living for himself and his family. While the
so-called social policy experts are dissecting the
causes that would have pushed the young accused
persons to commit such a heinous crime, Aruns
family are left to deal with this tragic, unnecessary
loss. If and when the accused are sentenced, to
a long sentence of imprisonment, the family
and the community will continue to pay for the
rehabilitation of the criminals. Approximately
$80000 will be spent on the offenders per year
by the tax-payer. Nothing for the victims. This

situation needs to change and it needs to change

now. New Zealand First recognises that the rights
of victims are paramount, and that the offenders
rights are subject to the rights of both the victim
and the state.
Unemployment, poor parenting, inappropriate
peer group pressure, and other socio-economic
factors contribute markedly to our crime rate.
We advocate a balanced policy prescription
containing elements of prevention, apprehension,
punishment, and rehabilitation. Frequently prison
inmates come out worse than when they went in.
This failure of rehabilitation is not acceptable.
New Zealand First will introduce a category
of outcome sentences which put the onus on the
criminal to show that he or she is ready for release.
New Zealand Firsts policies are tough, but fair
and non-restrictive for law-abiding citizens.
New Zealand First will:
Put more police into local communities.
Numbers are declining again so we would

death. We will establish a nationwide home

safety service to empower women to leave violent
relationships. We will trial mobile safety alarms
with GPS technology for victims so they can
immediately notify Police of an emergency, and
their location, and introduce legislation to allow
courts to stipulate GPS monitoring on high-risk
family violence offenders.
We will also explore the possibility of a
conviction disclosure scheme which would allow
people to ask whether their partner has a history of
violence. Concerned third parties, such as parents,
would also be able to request this information, so
long as they have good reason to.
Our initiatives will improve awareness,

support, and protection for victims, and will make

them strong. The Justice sectors stronger response
to family violence complements Associate
Minister for Social Development Tariana Turias
work to promote community-wide rejection of
family violence. Minister Turias work builds
on the recommendations the Government has
accepted in whole, or in part, from the Expert
Advisory Groups report on Family Violence and
will strengthen existing initiatives that are making
a real impact in communities.
Together with the Governments work around

will help future generations of children to grow up
without family violence.

immediately step up recruiting and training.

Put extra police on the beat and more patrol
cars on the road, day and night. Sufficient
support staff will be employed so frontline
officers are not tied up with paperwork.
Ensure a clear focus on crime prevention and
investigation, and a clear line between traffic
enforcement and general duties policing.
Introduce legislation to ban all criminal gangs.
Overhaul current legislation relating to the
sentencing of serious, violent offenders to
provide greater protection for the public. If
there is not genuine rehabilitation the offender
will serve the full sentence.
An end to sole-charge police stations.
Minimum double-manning of all remote and
rural stations.
Full resourcing for police to enable them to
serve our communities best.
Fast, easy access for police officers to all
the tools and equipment required to do their
jobs properly, including firearms as lawfully
necessary.
Active engagement by police with our schools

and communities to build trust, and to help

prevent and solve crime.
Extend the range of sentencing options for
violent young offenders including: secure
training order sentences involving supervised
control and intensive rehabilitation; other
secure and military-type training options and
widening the range of offences for which
young offenders may be automatically subject
to adult processes e.g. attempted murder,
aggravated sexual assault, serious repeat
offending.
Integrate emergency services into a single
Ministry of Emergency Services. Civil
Defence, Police, Fire and Ambulance will
share facilities, stations, radio communication
facilities, vehicles and civilian support staff.
Information will be shared amongst these
services to better coordinate services.

The Botched Case of the Malaysian Diplomat

David Shearer

n May 10th, the Prime Minister and foreign

minister Murray McCully were told that
a young New Zealand woman had allegedly
suffered burglary and attempted rape by a
Malaysian diplomat.
Their number one priority should have been
standing up and getting justice for her.
Instead, amid jargon, diplomatic immunity,
MFAT, waivers, and excuses, they seemed to

forget she even existed.

They sat on the alleged crime for weeks,
hoping it would go away, and never intending to
tell the public. When the story hit the headlines,
they selectively released the correspondence they
wanted us to see.
That correspondence contradicted Malaysia?s
foreign minister ? who said New Zealand allowed
the diplomat to return to Malaysia ? greatly
embarrassing a friendly country that had behaved
with the utmost integrity.
When Murray McCully finally had to front up

with the full story, he blamed his staff.

He also apologised to John Key ? when the
first and most important apology should have
been to the assaulted New Zealand woman.
Now, John Key has criticised the MFAT staff
member through the media. This is wrong on so
many levels:
It could prejudice any independent
investigation.
It forces a staff member to take the blame
for a problem that is stems more from systemic
problems in MFAT, caused by the Minister

McCully?s ham-fisted restructure last year.

Surely the Minister should take responsibility
for his own Ministry.
One good thing has come out of this. The
diplomat is being sent back to New Zealand to be
tried. So we?re back to where we should be. His
victim will see justice being done.
But would it be too much to ask for our
government to behave with integrity in these
situations ? irrespective of who?s watching?

for the future our environment and our

clean green reputation, our diverse and skilled
people, including our migrant communities,
and the emerging new innovation economy. At
the heart of Greens policy is sustainability a
clean environment, an inclusive society and a
fair economy, all working together.
The Green Party will tackle climate change.
As New Zealanders, we cannot turn away while
low lying areas of India, Asia and the Pacific
suffer from the damaging impacts. New Zealand
is one of the highest emitters of greenhouse
gases per person, and we must play our part.
We can also benefit from job opportunities
through the growing clean technology sector
worldwide. The Greens policy on climate

change puts a price on emissions and returns

the revenue to the public through a tax free
allowance of $2,000 on income tax and a cut
in company tax. It is supported through policies
on warm homes, safe cycling and better public
transport, energy efficiency and innovation.
We must also step up to the challenge of
inequality and child poverty. This is crucial
if we are to build an inclusive society, with
opportunities for all, free from violence. The
Greens policy on school hubs will provide
support for teachers and staff in low decile
schools, adding nurses and social services into
a school hubs that identify kids needs at an
early age and provide support.
Green Party policies also tackle the high

costs that make living in places like Auckland

a struggle for most families. The Greens have
announced a progressive home ownership
policy that will provide young families with
a pathway to home ownership through shared
equity in the home. This is supported by
investment in affordable housing and a warrant
of fitness to ensure that rented homes are safe
and warm.
The Greens believe that there shouldnt
be false trade-offs between environment,
community well-being and the economy we
need them to work together to build a better
society for all. Give your party vote to the
Green Party at the election on 20th September
to make this happen.

Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame: Signature event of growing

Indian community
- Hon. Todd McClay

he Indian community plays an important

part in wider New Zealand. Were a multicultural nation and as a Member of Parliament
I am pleased to support this ever expanding
community.
Recently as Associate Tourism Minister
I addressed the India New Zealand Business
Council at a Beyond Business Matters event in
Auckland.
India is one of three Emerging Markets that
Tourism New Zealand is investing in. Since
becoming a priority emerging market, Tourism
New Zealand has grown its presence in India,
and has more than tripled its investment.
New Zealand hosted 32,064 visitors from
India in the year ending March 2014, up
almost 7 per cent on the previous year with
Indian visitors spending on average NZ$3680
per person (excluding airfares) whilst in New
Zealand.
Priorities for the coming year include the
2015 Cricket World Cup, with India scheduled
to play two pool games in New Zealand (against
Ireland in Hamilton on March 8, and Zimbabwe
in Auckland on March 14). New Zealand will
also host a quarter-final and a semi-final, either
of which could potentially feature India.
I was pleased to hear that the Prime Ministers
of Australia and New Zealand have agreed that
people travelling to both countries for the event
will only need to apply for one visa. This will

streamline procedures for genuine Cricket

World Cup spectators and participants, making

it easier for people wanting to enjoy the Cup.

Im looking forward to the Cricket World
Cup and to watching India beat everyone
except New Zealand!
Last year I was in India to attend the Asian
Development Bank Annual Conference which
was held in Delhi. It was a good opportunity
to meet with Indian business leaders and I
was able to sit down with them to talk about
opportunities for India and New Zealand to
work together.
Earlier this year I attended the Kiwi-Indian
Hall of Fame 2014 Event alongside Prime
Minister John Key who was the Guest of
Honour. It was a great evening attended by over
300 whos who of the Kiwi-Indian community.
The institution of the Kiwi Indian Hall of
Fame provides a way to honour, acknowledge

and celebrate achievements of

individuals who have made a
real difference to the Kiwi Indian
community and New Zealand. Its
the second year its been held and
has become the signature event of
the growing Indian community in
NZ. Well done to those who were
recognised!
It is great to be able to attend
these events around the country but
I especially enjoy the local events
held in my hometown of Rotorua.
My family and I take part in many
activities held by the local Indian
community including the annual Holi festivals
and Kabaddi tournaments. These events are
good opportunities to join with and celebrate
the strong cultures in our community in a
unique and fun way. I always enjoy Holi
and in particular appreciate the significance
of bringing together people from different
communities, backgrounds and faiths.
A recent highlight was the annual Kabaddi
Tournament in Te Puke where two of my sons
took part in the competition. They had a great
time and were impressed with this exciting
game.
As we continue to work towards a better
relationship with India, I remain committed to
continuing with my strong involvement in the
Indian community in my electorate of Rotorua
and across the country.

Tauranga and the Indian

Community
- Simon Bridges, National Party

auranga has a very strong Indian

community. Last years census showed
that the number of Indians in Tauranga and
the Western Bay of Plenty has almost doubled
since 2006. Tauranga as a whole is changing
rapidly and becoming more diverse, which
is adding vibrancy and a fantastic mix of
cultures to the city.
A great example of this is our annual
Multicultural Festival, which is now in
its 15th year. This year over 30 cultures
were represented,
with
cultural
performances, food
stalls and arts and
crafts on offer.
In January I
was privileged to
be a guest at the
inaugural
Sikh
parade to mark
the birth of Guru
Gobind Singh. This was the first time
the march had been conducted outside of
Auckland, and there are plans to make it
an annual event. Around 2500 people took
part and it is expected to be even bigger next
year.
Last month Tauranga hosted the World
Champion Women Kabaddi Team from
India as the final game of a five-match series
against a New Zealand side. I was joined
by my National Parliamentary colleagues
Kanwaljit Singh Baskhi and Scott Simpson. I

have attended
a
Kabaddi
tournament in
the past and
I think the
sport has real
potential
to
catch on here.
The
skills
required are
similar to rugby league and touch rugby,
a popular pastime with all ages in New
Zealand.
While the New Zealand team werent
able to pull off a win, there was a great
atmosphere at the game and it was a very
enjoyable day out.
I deeply value and appreciate the
contribution that the Indian community
provides in making Tauranga an exciting and
interesting city to live.

Fasting During Ramadan, A Universal practice

F

or Muslims, Ramadhan is a great favour from

Almighty Allah but it can only be considered
as such if they observe it properly.Otherwise the
month of Ramadhan will arrive with all its virtues
and blessing andthen pass by without us gaining
anythingfrom it.
Ramadhan is the most blessed month of
Islamic calendar in which Allah S.W.T. guides
us to the good deeds. It is the month in which
the Quran was revealed, as clear guidance and
judgment to all people. It is the month in which
good deeds are multiplied and sins are forgiven.
Allah S.W.T. has enjoined fasting during the day
as a pillar of Islam and made the extra prayers
during the night voluntary. If anyone observes
fasting believing in its obligation and anticipating
its rewards, all his previous sins are forgiven.
In this month, the gates of paradise are opened
and faithful increase good deeds. The gates of
Hell are shut and sinful acts reduced. Devils
are chained, so they are no longer able to affect
faithful people as they do in other times.
It is stated in a Hadith of prophet
Mohammad(SAW):If my nation realizes what
Ramadhan really is, they would wish that the whole
year should be converted into Ramadan.Such is
the value of this month of fasting.
The Arabic word for fasting is sawm. Its
original meaning is to abstain from something, if

for example one refrains from speaking or eating,

this will be termed saaim.
But in Islamic terminology it relates to
the abstention from food, drink and sexual
intercourse from dawn until sunset with the
intention of fasting.
According to history, fasting was widely
observed by almost all religions and nations. In
fact, the origin of fasting stems from the time of
Adam, as it is mentioned in a prophetic tradition
that fasting in Ayyam-e-Beez, the 13th, 14th and
15thof each Islamicmonth was obligatory in his
Sharia (law).
It was a very significant part of Prophet
Musas Sharia, and observed by Jews on Yom
Kippur (the Day of Atonement) and on a number
of less important fast days.It was also observed
in Christianity and in ancient Greece. In certain
eastern religions, the practice of abstinence is
connected with the doctrine of reincarnation.
In Hinduism and Buddhism, the term Barat,
whichmeans fasting is used and considered a
very special form of worship for the development
ofspiritual discipline.
In short, sawm (fasting) was well known to
virtually all the major religions and nations and
was considered an excellent method of attaining
physical and spiritual discipline.
Fasting was prescribed purposefully and in

a positive manner as it has significant physical

and spiritual benefits. From the medical point of
view fasting is a very good method of maintaining
good health.
From a spiritual perspective fasting generates
patience, tolerance, kindness and sympathy
which help to create a powerful community whose
goal is to work hard for the betterment of Islam,
Muslims and the world around them. And at the
same time, it also gives us a true realization of the
needs of the poor - those who suffer from hunger
and starvation and shortage of food the whole
year long. But the most important and significant
objective of fasting is to create an environment
where there is no difference between the rich and
the poor, a slave and a master, all live equally
within a particular atmosphere and environment,
and all suffer equally from thirst and hunger.
This is the most unique example of the equality
and unity which Islam tries to establish amongst
people.

spokesperson for Ulama Council of New
Zealand (UCNZ).

he Holy month Ramadan, the ninth month of

the Islamic calendar, Muslims allover world
observe a period of fasting from sunrise
to sunset. The fasting in the month of Ramadan
is one of the pillars of Islam. In this month people
in Islamengage themselves in prayers, spiritual
reflection and reading the Quran.
The holy month Ramadan started in New Zealand
on Sunday 29th of June along with other countries
such as Saudi Arabia, Gulf countries, Syria, Egypt,
and Turkey.
The different countries in the world fast for these
hours: - New Zealand and Australia -9 hours, Russia,
UK, Sweden, Germany -20 hours, Saudia Arabia
14 hours, USA, Syria, Libya, Turkey & Italy -17 hours,
India & Pakistan 15-16 hours, Norway 22hours
(longest hours fasting)
The time for Ramadan where weactively engage
ourselves in Ibadat, or acts of devotion, including
fasting, prayers, Taraweeh, late night prayers, Quran
recitation, and other forms of worship. However, this
is the month we seek to improve our relationship with
Allah by asking for His forgiveness and blessing,
striving to excel in all good acts, and making lasting
changes in our inner and outer lives
First and foremost to remember as we engage in
the various Ibadat during Ramadan is that these acts
of devotion offer us the opportunity to get closer to
Allah and to increase the love we have for Him in our
hearts. As Muslims, our faith requires that our love
for Allah and his Prophet (Sallalahualaihiwasallam
May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)
supersedes any love we have for any other object
or creation. Many scholars agree on the basis of
sound hadith that Allah creates the individualhis
soul and his heartin such a way that his natural
tendency is to love Allah. However, as a persons
heart is gradually intruded upon by doubts, desires,
and temptations, that love has to be rekindled from
time to time through both faith and knowledge.

The Essence of Fasting

asting is a bounty, grace and gift of Allah

Taala to His slave. It has not been made
obligatory for going without meals. It has
been enjoined upon those who have faith
so that they can attain the pleasure of Allah
Taala and become pious. It energizes the
strength of servitude to Him. It is sustenance
for the spiritual strength to be fortified.
The essence of fasting is stated in the
Holy Quran in the following Verse wherein
Allah Taala states, O Believers! Fasting
has been made obligatory upon you as was
made obligatory upon those before you, so
that you may become pious. [ S u r a h 2 , V
e r s e 1 8 3 ] According to Hazrat Data Ganj
Bakhsh (Radiallahu Taala Anh) hunger is a
cause of trouble to the body but a source
of life to the heart and soul. Eating to ones
fill strengthens the stomach but hunger
strengthens the inner and natural state.
He who endeavours hard to strengthen the
inner state is dearer and a special slave of
Allah Taala. He is protected against worldly
worries and concerns. Hunger is the food of
sincere men, religion of the disciples and
the imprisonment of Shaitaan.

Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)

is reported to have said, The stomach of
a hungry person is dearer to Allah than
seventy wise pious people. Hazrat Shaikh
Bishr Haafi (Radiallahu Taala Anh) once
said, Hunger cleanses the heart of malice,
kills desires, makes one the heir of the
refinement of knowledge and reveals its
mysteries.
The essence of fasting is to weaken
the forces which are Shaitaans means
of leading us back to evil. It is therefore
essential to cut down ones intake from
what one would consume on a normal night,
when not fasting. No benefit is derived from
the fast if one consumes as much as one
would usually take during the day and night
combined. There is no receptacle more
odious to Allah Taala than a belly stuffed
full with lawful food. Of what use is the fast
as a means of conquering Allah Taalas
enemy and abating appetite, if at the time
of Iftaar one not only makes up for all one
has missed during the daytime, but also
indulges in a variety of extra foods? It has
become the custom these days to stock

up for Ramadaan with all kinds of foods,

and emphasis is placed so much on food
that womenfolk spend most of their days
preparing for Iftaar rather than making
Ibaadat. A certain Saint of Allah Taala once
said that a sin is written for one whose efforts
during the day are made only to prepare for
breaking fast.
Eating
ravenously
diminishes
the
importance of fasting. Fasting basically
aims at curbing the desire and the lower
self, training them to observe temperance.
This is how desire and the lower self are
restrained, curbed, tamed and coached into
meritorious habit of feeling content during
fasting and observing temperance in food,
controlling the tongue and restraining other
behaviour for putting oneself into accord
with Allah Taalas will.
Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh (Radiallahu
Taala Anh) states, The heart of the hungry
is sharper and his instinct healthier and more
purified than those of others, especially
one who does not drink much water and
cleanses the lower self with the help of
spiritual endeavour. A hungry mans body is

modest and heart humble and Allah fearing.

Hunger kills the power of desiresHazrat
Sufyaan Thauri (Radiallahu Taala Anh) said,
The fasting person who slanders others
gets his fast adulterated. Hazrat Shaikh
Abu Talib Makki (Radiallahu Taala Anh) is
of the opinion that Allah Taala has declared
the acts like listening to lies and talking evil,
synonymous and tantamount to eating out of
forbidden as Allah Taala states in the Holy
Quran, They are habitual listeners of lies,
great devourers of the things forbidden. [ S
urah5,Verse42]
May Allah Taala grant us the Taufeeq to
understand the true essence of Ramadaan
and to focus our attention on Ibaadat and
becoming pious rather than on food and
worldly affairs, Ameen
Haji Moli Abdul Shafeez
Pesh Imam
South Auckland Muslim Association

Significance of Ramadan
E

very year during Ramadaan, the ninth

month of the Islamic calendar, Muslims
fast from dawn until sunset, abstaining from
food, drink and marital relations. Fasting
is compulsory on every capable mature
Muslim. Children, the sick, the mentally unfit,
the elderly, menstruating women, pregnant
or breastfeeding women and travellers are
exempt or have special concessions.
In any case, why would any sensible
person voluntarily neglect his needs and
desires, albeit for a limited time, unless
there was something more desirable to be
profited thereby? Fasting is no exception to
this rationale, and here, it is their Creators
pleasure and His reward that the devout hope
to attain.
Ramadaan coincides with the revelation of
Islams holy book, the Quraan, 1400 years
ago. The Quraan itself asserts that it is the
inimitable speech of God and it remains
in its original Arabic language to this day,
memorized by millions of Muslims. The
Quraans theme, which it states to be the
actual purpose of life, is tawheed Gods
unique oneness and His sole right to be
worshipped and unconditionally obeyed. The
scholar Ibn-ul-Qayyim noted that every part
of this scripture is found to be talking either
about tawheed and its opposite, associating
partners with God or about the reward of true
monotheists and the outcome of those who
worshipped others besides God.
Fasting is a special worship which trains
the believer to develop God-consciousness
and exercise self-restraint. According to the
Quranic narrative, no original sin is inherited

by humans from which there is no hope of

deliverance until someone else is made to
suffer and atone for it. Rather, each persons
deeds are the result of his own God-given
choices. Accordingly, salvation lies in ones
own responsibility to restrain the ego from
vice as much as possible and in sincere
repentance to the All-Merciful Creator for
any lapses. In this regard, fasting has indeed
been observed to have an amazing effect in
protecting the heart, tongue and limbs from
immorality and sin.
Fasting nurtures patience and serves as
a spiritual purification. Fasting is not merely
abandoning food and drink, said the Prophet,
peace be upon him. It is abandoning vain
and indecent speech. Do not spoil your fast
by abusing anyone. If anyone insults you, say:
I am fasting. If you were standing, sit down.
Fasting teaches empathy; when a person
feels hunger for a while, he becomes sensitive
towards the less fortunate who are in this
situation more often.
Above all, fasting embodies the very
foundation of Islam, tawheed. Without true
realization of this central tenet, other aspects
of Islam remain hazy at best. Fasting demands
absolute sincerity; this is one worship where
hypocrisy and showing-off cannot exist. As the
scholar Ibn Rajab observed: When the egos
craving for its desires becomes most intense
in a place unobserved by human eyes, yet it
foregoes them willingly for its Creators sake,
what else does this demonstrate except proof
of ones faith and sincerity to God?
Shaykh Rasheed Ahmed on behalf of
Masjid at-Taqwa, Auckland.

every month for the last 18 years since 1996 you will see people
rushing to a building Earlier a church now a masjid known as Masjid

than praying individually, the masjid is also a magnet for the meeting
and greeting of friends and relatives. Prayers is one of the five pillars
of Islam and was the first matter made obligatory in Islam , on the day
of judgment prayer is the first thing for which we will be accountable for
Fridays lunchtime is the holiest prayer time for the week , people
run briskly for the prayers. This month is auspicious as Ramadhan
commenced on the 29th. During this month fasting for 30 consecutive
days with no food or drink is compulsory for Muslims. It is one of the five
pillars of Islam. The reason for the fast is to remind of the lessfortunate
who struggle for even a meal a day. During this month Muslims Engage
in Charitable work for the poor known as zakat
The last census states that 50,000 Muslims live in NZ. Mt Roskill
has a very high concentration of Muslims, many live close to the masjid
especially to keep their faith close to their hearts and for their families
values
41 different ethnics cultures converge here standing shoulder to
shoulder in prayers each day.
300 people come to break their fast of Iftar in Ramadhan and to
immerse in sunset/magrib prayers ever evening.
Later around 7.30pm Isha/taraweeh prayers are held bringing in the
much larger crowds from home who have fasted another day as ordained
by Allah the almighty. It is a time for extra worship and reflection and
brotherhood if we observe fasting with sincerity and dedication it will
install discipline and steadfastness keeping us on the straight path for
the next 12 months. May Allah almighty accept our fasts for all the good
deeds, May he bless us with peace and prosperity and a model society
living in harmony with each other

Ramadan 2014 Messages

Mohamed Haniffa Mohamed

ormer speaker of parliament of Srilanka and Chairman Sri Lanka Islamic

center, Founder member of Rabitha (Muslim World League) and Motarma
(World Muslim Congress)
This is the third consecutive year Im forwarding the Ramadan message to
the people of New Zealand. This Ramadan its very unfortunate that most of the
Muslim states are troubled by the infighting in the name of Islam. In countries
where Muslims are minorities, there are isuues within the minorities dut to the
suspicion created by rigid practices that has influenced this unfortunate situation.
Islam is a flexible and peace loving which has won many hearts globally
among other communities.
The heartening practice of the Muslims is Zakat (obligatory Charity) during
the month of Ramadan which is extended to other communities if there is no
less privileged Muslims in the community. This is a unique practice that can win
hearts of other communities and secures to the Muslim living among the majority
community.
Ramadan is a discipline that shows an individual binding with Allah Uthala for
all the good things showered on them during the life time.
It is our duty to follow Prophet Muhammad(Peace be upon him) for the service
to mankind irrespective of religion, caste, creed which brought unity, amity and
harmony in the Muslim world.
I also take this opportunity to recognize the selfless service of Brother
Mohammed Iqbal for the last forty years through the MOTARMAR( World
Muslim Congress) and an honorary consul for Sri Lanka in New Zealand.
I pray Almighty Allahu Thala to guide us in the right path to observe the fast
piously to obtain all merits and good deeds showered upon us during the month
of Ramadan.
I wish all people of New Zealand a Ramadan Kareem and Saleems

n this occasion of the Holy Month of

Ramadhan, I am most pleased to express
my heartiest Ramadan Mubarak to everyone

Once again, we thank and praise Allah
Almighty for offering us yet another opportunity
to fast in this blessed month, perform good
deeds, improve our physical and spiritual
wellbeing and to reap maximum rewards from
His Mercy and Bounty. May Allah accept our
fasting and good deeds.
For Muslims all over the world, the
Holy Month of Ramadan is of very special
importance. It is observed throughout with
all sanctity and reverence that it demands.
It is a time for extra worship and reflection
and brotherhood. It inculcates patience,
perseverance and everything good about the

If we observed the fasting with sincerity
and dedication, it is sure to instill discipline
and steadfastness in us that will keep us on
the straight path until the next Ramadan. This
month has been declared sacred in the Holy
Quran wherein Allah Almighty says:
O you who believe, fasting is prescribed
on you as it was prescribed to those before
you so that you may become pious. (Chapter
2, Verse 183). The prescribed fasting is for a
fixed number of days, but whoso among you if
sick or on a journey, shall fast the same number

of other days; and for those who are able to

fast only with great difficulty, is expiation - the
feeding of a poor man. And who so does well of
his own accord it is better for him. And fasting
is good for you, if you only knew. (Chapter
2, Verse 185).
The month of Ramadan is also about doing
good work for society. Muslims are enjoined
to do good for their fellow human beings
regardless of their faith. Helping the poor and
the indigent, bringing relief to the needy and
orphans, providing safety for weak members
of the society are but few examples of good
work. During this special time, we should also
remember our brethrens who suffers from war
and persecution and other calamities in this
world and sincerely supplicate to Almighty
Allah to eradicate their sufferings and bless
them with peace and goodness in their life.
Together with our families and friends,
let us seize this golden opportunity from
the blessed month of Ramadan to improve
ourselves spiritually and socially and work
towards creating a united, compassionate and
just society and interact with our fellow New
Zealanders to share the beauty of this blessed
month and Islam.
May Allah almighty accept our fasts and all
the good deeds. May He bless New Zealand
with peace and prosperity and make it a model
society living in harmony with each other and
the nature.

FTA talks must continue

ll the signs are there that the Free Trade Agreement negotiations are firmly back on
the table, with renewed enthusiasm and energy.
While the newly elected government in India is giving cautious signals that the stalled
FTA will come back onto the agenda, although it will have to include a commitment
to competitive markets and the agricultural sector if its to succeed, as Trade Minister
Tim Groser pointed out this week to more than 300 attendees at the Business Beyond
Barriers summit in Auckland.
Indias High Commissioner to New Zealand, Ravi Thapar, since his arrival here
seven months ago, has emphasised that FTA talks are continuing, and just needed
some tweaking to accommodate clauses which would then provide mutual benefit
to both countries - exactly as FTAs are meant to do.
Under new Prime Minister Narendra Modi (of the Bharatiya Janata Party), the worlds
largest democracy has just shifted rightward as a Hindu nationalist party, although this
historic election has reversed a long tradition of coalition governments.
The mood and overtones between the two countries at the India New Zealand
Business Council organised business summit was friendly and engaging, yet one
couldnt help feeling an undercurrent that there is a some significant factor holding up
the process towards the conclusion of the FTA.
New Zealand and India have made some progress towards a free trade agreement,
but negotiations are not in the space we want to be, Groser told attendees at the
summit.
The potential benefits of a trade agreement with India would be of the same magnitude
as New Zealands FTA with China or even greater.
New Zealand trade officials have had friendly conversations with the new Indian
government since Modis landslide election win in May.
The discussions had covered the long-running talks over an FTA between the two
countries, but Groser said he was not expecting clarity soon.
What can Modis government offer in terms of its foreign policy?
Soon after his election victory, Modi announced his intention to make the 21st
century Indias century. His foreign policy will be driven by a desire to bring about
Indias economic transformation, considering he has already been credited with the
rapid economic growth in his home state of Gujarat.
It is likely that Modi will help transform how business is done in India and seek
foreign investments to upgrade the countrys rickety infrastructure. How he manages the
interests of the corporate sector with those of the tens of thousands of small shopkeepers
and labourers who supported him will be the big test of his economic and foreign policy
alike.
Like his predecessor Manmohan Singh, Modi is aware that India cannot rise
economically by trying to leave its immediate neighbours behind, commentators say.
So while there will be differences in style in Delhi, a radical change in Indias foreign
policy is unlikely.
Thapar also time and again emphasised that New Zealand should re-brand itself as
a smart nation with smart technology and innovators, not just a primary industries
nation. India would be interested in a deeper economic co-operation with New Zealand,
of which trade was just one aspect.
All signs point to a keen desire on the part of both countries to engage in free trade,
further delays in sorting out differences will benefit neither.

Coalition will not last: poll

Nemani Delaibatiki

MAJORITY of people say the coalition

between SODELPA and the Fiji Labour
Party will not last, the latest Razor Research/
Fiji Sun poll reveals.
The 19th weekly poll shows that 55 per cent
voted no and 45 per cent said yes.
Politics makes strange bedfellows. Thats
exactly what has happened between SODELPA
(Social Democratic Liberal Party) and FLP.
While they have widely varying views, they
have come together for political convenience
to achieve a common goal bring down the
Bainimarama juggernaut. They know that
individually they have little hope of achieving
that goal.
They say they have put aside the differences
that have led to bitter acrimony in the past.
The latest poll also reveals 33 per cent of
those surveyed this time have not yet registered
for the September 17 general election.
This is a big increase from 23 per cent in
the previous poll. It is a disturbing trend and it
is not clear what is contributing to the eligible
voter apathy.
In the Preferred Prime Minister stakes, PM
Rear Admiral (Retired) Voreqe Bainimarama
and nearest rival SODELPA leader Ro Teimumu
Kepa lose five per cent. The PM is at 73, Ro
Teimumu at eight. But leaders of the National
Federation Party, FLP and Peoples Democratic
Party recorded positives.
Dr Biman Prasad (NFP) goes up from four
to six, Mahendra Chaudhry (FLP) rises from
two to four and Felix Anthony (PDP) goes up
from one to three. In the political party stakes,
FijiFirst records a major drop from 74 to 59 per

cent, SODELPA slides from 12 to eight, NFP

increases from five to eight, FLP from two to
five and PDP from three to five.
People now feel safer
People feel more safer now in their own home
than before 2006, the latest weekly Fiji Sun poll
says.
Eight-six per cent of those polled say they
feel safer now.
Ten per cent say they dont and four per cent
are not sure.
The Government focus on community
policing working in partnerships that involve
the Police and the community is showing
results and is reflected in the peoples response.
The poll also shows 31 per cent of people asked
say they have not registered for the September
17 General Election. This is a matter of concern
and should be addressed by the political parties
and the Fijian Elections Office.
Unless they are registered, they cant vote.
If they are registered but fail to vote then
you could end up with a significant figure.
Ultimately, it could lead to a low voter turnout
and tight results in the election outcome.
Parties which are well organised will ensure
that their supporters are not only registered but
are able to cast their votes. That may require
providing the transport and the means for their
eligible voters to do both.
Every vote will count in a close contest.

From the desk of I am Woman

In pursuit of Happiness..

n todays time and age when we rush about

trying to get and keep our lives together
and any free time whatsoever is dedicated to
Facebook or Twitter or our choice of social
media, we seem to forget to check in with
ourselves regularly. Check in if the life we have
chosen for ourselves is infact making us Happy?
Why would we want to do this you might ask?
Well didnt you learn growing up that the goal
for all human existance is happiness? And
really is that not what seems to be the purpose
of whatever we do anyways?
Having said that, I was asked this question
a few years ago about what happiness meant to
me. At that time I was a size 22 and naturally
being me that was the first thing that came to
mind. On further examination I responded by
saying that if I were a size 12, had a hunk of a
man, be terribly rich and famous all in all had
a successful problemfree life, I would perhaps
be happy.
To my amazement the person asking the
question told me the story of Cleopatra, who
inspite of her unprecedented beauty and
unparalleled authority and wealth, had no
choice but to take her own life in the end.
Well, it so happens that there are countless
other such examples in history. So that really
means that just because you maybe extremely
rich, or beautiful or have the perfect partner
does not guarantee happiness.
We look at beautiful women who have rich
partners but constantly fight with each other.
We can meet extremely successful career
women whose children have ended up being on

drugs or whose personal lives are in shambles.

Besides the only constant they say in human
life is change. So even if one maybe happy and
satisfied as a youth, one may become a constant
complainer as one gets older. Someone who was
spending each day with joy can one day change
to a completely different person becoming

insane with anger and

wander about in the
darkness of suffering.
So what then is
happiness??
A
definition
of
happiness states that
Happiness is a mental
or emotional state of
well-being characterized
by positive or pleasant
emotions ranging from
contentment to intense
joy.
Happiness it seems
is of such fundamental
importance to the human
condition
that
life,
liberty and the pursuit
of
happiness
were
deemed to be unalienable
rights by the United
States Declaration of
Independence.
The United Nations
declared 20 March as
the International Day of
Happiness to recognise
the relevance of happiness
and wellbeing as universal goals.
There seem to be several definitions and
approaches to this simple question of What
is happiness? From my own experience as
a student of the philosophy of life and the
Buddhist approach to life it was interesting

to note that most schools of thought describe

happiness as not a life without problems, but
rather the strength to overcome the problems
that come our way. It seems that there is no
such thing as a problem-free life; difficulties
are unavoidable. But how we experience and
react to our problems is what determines our
happiness. Happiness is to be found in the
dynamism and energy of our own life as we
struggle to overcome one obstacle after another.
A beautiful analogy that I read states that the
challenges we face in life can be compared to a
tall mountain, rising before a mountain climber.
For someone who has not trained properly,
whose muscles and reflexes are weak and slow,
every inch of the climb will be filled with terror
and pain. The exact same climb, however,
will be a thrilling journey for someone who
is prepared, whose legs and arms have been
strengthened by constant training. With each
step forward and up, beautiful new views will
come into sight.
Research now shows us that we can train our
minds to be happy. There are many roads that
lead to this most sought after land of happiness.
We will continue to explore this more in our
forthcoming articles. In the meantime we
would be very keen to hear from our readers of
their various practices and thoughts around this.

The Spiritualy & Science behind Cremation as per Hindu Dharma

- Rajesh Krishnamurthy

he Hindu code of conduct places primary

emphasis on the two main qualities in a
human being which distinguish him from
animals and lower life characters. They are
Education (Vidya) and proper social and
religious conduct (samskara). Of the two
Education is considered to be more important
because the other samskara does not come
without education.
Funeral or Anthyeshti is the last sacrament
in a persons worldly journey.Although rebirth
is part of Hindus core belief death is generally
considered as an inauspicious or sad occasion.
The general belief is that at the time of death
the soul leaves the body and travels to other
worlds. While the souls of pious people with
good karma go to higher worlds, those with
low merit and bad karma go to the lower
worlds. Funeral rites of Hindus are based on
ancient traditions and established practice
rooted in Hindus core belief.
Cremation is based on the vedic belief that
Agni (The god of fire) receives all offerings
made in a yagna (sacrifice) on behalf of
the gods and that the human body is an
aggregation of the five main elements Pancha
Bhutas(fire, earth, wind,water and space),
triple qualities (gunas) and 24 principles
(tattvas). Cremation is a kind of sacrifice in
which whatever is offered to Agni is shared
by the other gods through Agni. Blessed thus
by the divinities, the sacrifice sanctifies the
offering (the body) made in the cremation

ceremony and ensures a place in heaven for the

departed soul. Hindus also believe the body to
be the creation of parakriti or nature that is
made up of the above mentioned elemants,
qualities & principles. When a person dies &
his body is cremated, these constituent parts
return to nature to be recycled and regenerated/
manifested in other forms.
To put it in perspective a Christian or
Muslim feels assured of his place in heaven
after death, regardless of whether he has earned
it / deserves it or not, simply by accepting the
son of god or the messenger of god to be the
only means to heaven.
The way we scatter the ashes of our loved
ones after they are cremated, either helps
them in the afterlife or obstructs their onward
journey. Spiritual research conducted has
shown that immersing ashes in water alone
can benefit our ancestors. This article also
provides information on the reasons behind
the spiritually correct methods to be adopted
right from the collection of ashes to its final
disposal.
Nowadays there is an increasing trend of
people choosing cremation over burial as a
funeral rite. The funeral rite of cremation
that takes place either on a funeral pyre or in
a crematorium does not dispose off the body
totally. The remnants (ashes) are handed back
to the family in an pot or urn. The entire process
from receiving the ashes to the scattering of
the ashes is important from a spiritual point of

view. Depending on the process adopted, we

can either help our departed loved one to move
on in their afterlife or we may be instrumental
in their remaining earthbound. However the
surviving relatives who receive the ashes in
a cremation urn are generally unaware of the
spiritually correct way of scattering the ashes.
We know that we can medically identify a
decomposed body that is beyond recognition
by techniques such as DNA testing etc.
because even a small remnant of a tooth or hair
matches exactly to the person. Similarly at a
subtler, intangible level the smallest remnant
of the corpse, even in the ashes has the same
frequencies and vibrations as the person.
These frequencies are generally negative in
nature. Given that in general a majority of us
are not spiritually oriented, let alone spiritually
evolved, it would be fair to say that 50% of the
population is below 30% spiritual level, the
frequencies emanating from the body are the
subtle basic Raja-Tama frequencies. Also as
100% of the population (regardless of whether
they are Hindu or otherwise) is affected by
negative energies (also commonly referred
to as Devil, Ghost etc.) the frequencies
emanating from the body and ashes are of the
Tama variety. As a result, they are distressing
to us at a subtle level.
There is also a subtle bond that exists
between the ashes and the departed ancestor
because of the similar frequencies. These
negative frequencies and subtle bond can

create obstacles in the subtle bodys journey

after death and then end up controlling the
subtle body. This enables them to trouble the
subtle body or make it do many undesirable
acts as per their bidding (referred to generally
as possessed).
As water is all-assimilating, it imbibes
the distressing vibrations remaining from the
dead body in the ashes and the other related to
the subtle body like Absolute Earth (Pruthv),
Fire (Tj), Air (Vyu) element etc. This helps
to break the remaining attachment of the
subtle body to its gross body (sthladha) on
the Earth region (Bhlok). As a result, the
probability of the subtle body getting stuck
in the Earth region as well as that of being
attacked by ghosts is dramatically reduced.
Sea water is the best for disposal of ashes.
This is because sea water has the maximum
all-assimilating property among all types of
waters. Amongst other waters, holy rivers are
the best. Holy rivers are those rivers whose
waters have a very high content of subtle basic
Sattva component. For example, in rivers like
the Ganges in India the subtle basic Sattva
component is high despite the water being
heavily polluted. In general, flowing water is
the best as it scatters the ashes thus making it
near impossible for the ghosts to gain control
on the subtle body through the ashes.

Government will focus on Rail budget focusses on transparency, safety: Modi

alling the railways an engine of development,

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the
railway budget unveiled this week had its focus
on transparency and passenger safety.
The Rs.149,176 crore budget presented
in the Lok Sabha focussed on transparency
and integrity as well as the safety needs of
commuters, Modi said in remarks later.
The budget keeps in mind the development
of India. We can see the great use of technology
also, he said.
This budget shows where we want to take
the railways and at the same time where we want
to take India through the railways, the prime
minister said.
The budget introduces the countrys first bullet
train, to ply between Mumbai and Ahmedabad,
and increase the speed of passenger trains up to
200 km an hour on select routes.
The budget strengthens institutionalized
mechanism in the Indian Railway network,
which carries 23 million passengers every day.
This years budget plan is the higest ever plan
outlay of Rs 65,455 crore. The following are the
main highlights of the railway budget:

* No new increase in passenger fares and freight

charges
* 58 new trains, extenson of 11
* Plan to raise speed of trains to 160-200km/hr

Congress may move court if

denied opposition leader status
T
he Congress is considering the option of
going to court if its leader in the Lok Sabha is
not recogised as leader of opposition in the house,
party sources said.
Knocking the courts door is one of the
options, but we will wait and watch for now,
said a Congress leader who did not wish to be
named. The source, however, added that the issue
was being discussed in the party fora and a final
decision has not been taken.
The Congress, with 44 members, is the second
largest party in the Lok Sabha. However, it falls
short of the 10 percent mark -- 55 members in the
545-member house -- which the ruling Bharatiya
Janata Party has cited as mandatory as per rules
for getting the leader of opposition status to its
leader in the house.
Congress leaders have said that their leader
in Lok Sabha should be recognised as the leader

of opposition. Congress leader in Lok Sabha

Mallikarjun Kharge and chief whip Jyotiraditya
Scindia have met Speaker Sumitra Mahajan who
has to take a decision on the issue.
A union minister, however, said the Congress
has not formally broached the issue with the
speaker so far. Mahajan last week steered clear of
the issue while talking to reporters after all-party
meeting convened by her.
The meeting of leaders of political parties
was convened to discuss the business of the
House, she said in answer to queries.
The minister hinted that it may not be be
easy for the Congress leader in Lok Sabha to be
recognised as leader of opposition with requisite
facilities as there were similar precedents.
He said that Telugu Desam Party (TDP) was
not accorded the status when Congress got a
landslide victory in the 1980s.

Sonia, Rahul summoned in

National Herald newspaper case
A
court in New Delhi has issued summons to
Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her
son and party vice president Rahul Gandhi on
charges of misappropriating funds of a company
that used to publish the now-defunct National
Herald newspaper.
In response to a private complaint filed by
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian
Swamy, Metropolitan Magistrate Gomati
Manocha said: I have found prima facie evidence
against all the accused.
The court directed them to appear before it
Aug 7.
The Congress called it a motivated
complaint. The allegations are baseless, said
party spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi.
A party statement added: All the people
named in the National Herald matter will seek
legal advice and do the needful.
Apart from the Gandhis, the court also
summoned Congress leaders Motilal Vora and
Oscar Fernandes, Sam Pitroda, who was an
advisor to former prime minister Manmohan
Singh, and former journalist Suman Dubey, who
is close to the Gandhi family.
The complaint alleged that the Gandhis
formed a company, Young India, in 2010 with

38 percent share each to take control of Rs.2,000

crore worth of assets of Associated Journals Ltd
(AJL), which published the National Herald.
The National Herald was started in 1938
by Jawaharlal Nehru. Over the decades, it lost
circulation and ran into major financial losses,
leading to its closure in 2008.
Since all the accused persons have allegedly
acted in consortium with each other to achieve the
said nefarious purpose/design, there are sufficient
grounds for proceedings against all of them, the
court said.
However, the judge added in a 20-page order
that it goes without saying that guilt of an
accused is determined after trial when the burden
of proof is discharged beyond reasonable doubt.
This is only the stage of summoning of the
accused. When the accused appear before the court
they shall be at liberty to refute the allegations of
(Swamy), cross examine the witnesses.
The judge, however, added that the
complainant had established a prime facie case of
dishonest misappropriation of property, criminal
breach of trust, cheating and criminal conspiracy.
The summons were also served on Young
India.

India seeks explanation from US

over BJP snooping row
T
erming as highly objectionable the reports
that said the BJP was among the parties
which the US National Security Agency (NSA)
was authorised to spy upon, India has summoned
a senior US diplomat and sought an explanation
on the issue.
External affairs ministry spokesperson Syed
Akbaruddin said India has clearly explained its
concerns to the US government and sought an
assurance that it would not happen again.
He said intrusion of privacy of individuals and

governments as well as foreign factions, political

organisations and other entities that were part
of a 2010 certification approved by the Foreign

accompanying exhibit cited by the newspaper.

We have already communicated to the
government of the United States. We have
said that we have seen reports in the US media
regarding authorisation given to entities of the
US government to intrude upon the privacy of
communications of the Indian government, its
citizens and Indian entities. If such intrusions
have indeed been authorised and have taken place,
these are highly objectionable, Akbaruddin said.
According to a report in the Washington Post,
India was among 193 countries concerning
whom the NSA has been authorised to intercept
information by the Foreign Intelligence
Surveillance Court.
The NSA exempted only four countries Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand - in
a group known collectively with the US as the
Five Eyes from such surveillance, the newspaper
reported.
The US has had broad no-spying arrangements
with these four countries, the Post said, citing
a new set of top secret documents leaked by
Edward Snowden, a former NSA contractorturned-whistleblower who has been given asylum
in Russia.

Akbaruddin said the government had

conveyed its message clearly and lucidly and
will wait for a response from the US.
Asked about the response of the US official,
he said the US has conveyed that it will get back
after making a judgement on what information
it would like to share. Akbaruddin did not name
the US diplomat to whom India conveyed its
message.
The US has an interim ambassador in India
after former American envoy Nancy Powell
resigned from her post.
Akbaruddin had termed the revelations that
the BJP was among the foreign political parties
whom the NSA had been authorised to spy
upon, as totally unacceptable and extremely
disconcerting.
The snooping row has coincided with US
senator John McCains visit to India that began
last week.
Relations between India and the US went
through a delicate patch following a row over the
treatment and arrest of Indian diplomat Devyani
Khobragade in New York in December.
The row also comes ahead of Prime Minister
Modis expected meeting with US President
Barack Obama in September.

2,200 Indians to return from Iraq

N

early 2,200 Indians in Iraqs non-conflict

areas wish to return home, with 117 of
them set to reach the capital after midnight on
June 6.
The external affairs ministry said the
government was buying tickets for some 1,600
of the 2,200 while the air fare for the other 600
were being paid by the companies in Iraq they
worked for.
The announcement comes a day after 46
nurses from Kerala seized and freed by Sunni
insurgents who have overrun vast areas in Iraq
flew back to Kochi to a grand welcome.
The Saturday Air India flight later went to
Hyderabad where 52 nurses from Telangana
and 24 from Andhra Pradesh got off. Another
15 Gujaratis on the plane then flew to New
Delhi before taking a flight to Mumbai.
External affairs ministry spokesman Syed
Akbaruddin said New Delhi had deployed
mobile teams of six people each in the Iraqi
cities of Najaf, Karbala and Basra to facilitate
the return of Indian nationals.

All the three centres are held by the Iraqi

government based in Baghdad. The Kerala
nurses were seized in Tikrit and driven to Mosul
-- both places controlled by the insurgents
-- before being transported to Erbil, capital of
Kurdistan.
The spokesman said a total of 2,200 have in

some form or the other indicated their desire to

leave Iraq, which has plunged into a crisis in
the wake of the Sunni offensive.
He hoped that 1,600 Indians would be back
in India soon including 117 who would fly in
from Baghdad later this week.
Under pressure to evacuate Indians stranded

25

in Iraq, the Indian government is using seats

available on commercial flights flying out of
Baghdad. It is also deploying special flights.
Akbaruddin said the return of 2,200 Indians
would in a way mark the completion of the
process of bringing back those who wanted to
quit Iraq.
The government would be in a position to
divert more resources to the facilitation process
in what is an extremely difficult situation in
the conflict zone, he said.
We are working through the front door,
back door, trap door, he said, to indicate that
New Delhi was sparing no effort to bring back
the Indians home safely.
But officials said that 39 Indian workers
were still in captivity, held by suspected Sunni
militants. But they remained unharmed.
Akbaruddin said 486 telephone calls were
received at the control rooms operated by the
external affairs ministry from Indians stranded
across Iraq and they are respondinh to each one
of them.

Delhi University admissions begin, high cutoffs make students wait

India to connect 2.5 lakh panchayats through broadband

I
ndia will build a broadband highway connecting
2.5 lakh panchayats across the country in
the next three years to provide a host of public
services, union Communications and Information
Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a
target of providing broadband connectivity to 2.5
lakh local bodies (spread over six lakh villages)
across the country over the next three years, with
50,000 this (fiscal) year and one lakh each over
the next two years, Prasad said at a meeting with

IT industry honchos.
Asserting that the Modi government would be
known for building a broadband highway Prasad
said the prime minister wanted to change India
through the instrument of information technology.
He wants WiFi (wireless fidelity) in cities
and towns and broadband connectivity in every
school across the country, Prasad said.
Lamenting that broadband connectivity
in India was less than even in Sri Lanka and
Malaysia, Prasad appealed to the IT industry to

help the government in achieving the target of

providing broadband connectivity to the local
bodies.
You got a good name in the global IT industry
with your software and services. You should now
make India a proud destination for IT products by
developing innovative technologies and products
that can be used for e-education, e-healthcare and
e-governance, Prasad told executive council
members of the National Association of Software
and Services Companies (Nasscom).

country goes beyond the convenient and reliable

money transfer service we provide. said Kiran
Shetty, Regional Vice President, India, Western
Union.
The Western Union Foundation provides
direct grants to NGO programmes in India and
around the world that connect families with
economic opportunity. We support education
- including job training, life skills and language
acquisition - as well as financial literacy and small
business skills development programmes. We also
have a strong focus on communities in need and
support rebuilding efforts that spur the economy
for a sustainable, long-term recovery, Mr. Shetty
continued.

Some recent initiatives of the Western Union

Foundation include:
Pratham - The Western Union Foundation
partners with Pratham to provide vocational
education and job training skills to young adults
in various states across India. Pratham is a top-10

completing the programme.
Save the Children India - The Western Union
Foundation supports vocational training for young
women in the slum communities of Mumbai.

they get the college of their choice.

The rollback of the four-year programme
did not affect the cutoff, as it increased by 1.5-2
percent compared to last year.
Followed by computer science, cutoffs for the
commerce stream stood as high as 99.75 percent.
In almost all main colleges under DU
affiliation, the cutoff for commerce was between
99.75 and 97.25 percent, while it was between
96.25 and 92 percent last year.
For economics, Colleges have set their
benchmarks between 99 and 97.5 percent.For
English, the cutoff is as high as 97 percent in
Hindu College and Miranda House.
Admissions will take place for 54,000 seats in
61 affiliated colleges under the university.

Admitting that there was scope for

improvement in e-governance, the minister said
he had written to the Law Commission to shorten
electronic forms for approvals/clearances.
Nasscom president R. Chandrashekhar said
the cost of providing broadband connectivity
to 2.5 lakh local bodies was estimated to be a
whopping Rs.20,000 crore and the potential for
business by using the facility would be two-fold,
with a multiplier effect on the economy at large.

These vocational programmes help women learn

skills from computer literacy to embroidery,
helping ignite their potential and future financial
opportunities.
Going to School India - The Western Union
Foundation supports Going to School India
and their Be! Schools initiative, which helps
approximately 35,800 young people learn
entrepreneurial skills to enhance their education.
Many of these children are girls. The programme
teaches students financial literacy skills, provides
leadership development, and fosters academic
confidence among participants as they develop
business plans to meet the needs and demands of
their communities.

Indian plant scientist Sanjaya Indian student in UAE readies for

Rajaram wins World Food Prize NASA launch of experiments

minent Indian plant scientist, Dr. Sanjaya

Rajaram, has been named winner of the 2014
World Food Prize in recognition of his outstanding
work in the improvement of wheat crop.
Rajaram, who is now settled in Mexico, is
credited with increasing world wheat production
by more than 200 million tons in the years
following the Green Revolution, which has had
a far-reaching impact in alleviating world hunger.
World Food Prize Foundation President
Kenneth M. Quinn announced the $250,000
World Food Prize winner at an event at the US
State Department Wednesday.
The World Food Prize was established in
1986 by Dr. Norman Borlaug to focus the worlds
attention on hunger and on those whose work has
significantly helped efforts to end it.
It recognizes individuals who have advanced
human development by improving the quality,
quantity or availability of food in the world.
Borlaug earned the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970
for his work as a plant breeder and for taking
new agricultural practices to developing nations
around the world.
The award will be formally presented to
Rajaram in a ceremony in October at the Iowa
State Capitol in Des Moines, Iowa.
Rajarams breakthrough achievement in
successfully cross breeding winter and spring
wheat varieties, which were distinct gene pools

that had been isolated from one another for

hundreds of years, led to his developing plants
that have higher yields and a broad genetic base.
More than 480 high-yielding wheat varieties
bred by Rajaram have been released in 51
countries on six continents and have been widely
adopted by small- and large-scale farmers alike.
Rajaram followed Borlaug at the International
Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre
(CIMMYT), leading its Wheat Programme from
1976 to 2001.
The 2014 World Food Prize Laureate is an
individual who worked closely with Dr. Borlaug
in Mexico and who then carried forward and
extended his work, breaking new ground with his
own achievements, Quinn said.
As we celebrate the United Nations
International Year of Family Farming, it is most
fitting that the 2014 World Food Prize Laureate is
an individual who has truly fulfilled Dr. Borlaugs
last words: Take it to the farmer.
In a keynote address at the ceremony, US
Secretary of State John Kerry said: When you
do the math, when our planet needs to support
two billion more people in the next three decades,
its not hard to figure out: This is the time for a
second green revolution.
Thats why Dr. Sanjaya Rajaram is being
honoured with the World Food Prize. We are
grateful for the hundreds of new species of wheat
Dr. Rajaram developed, which deliver 200
million more tons of grain to global markets each
year and feed millions across the world.
Dr. Rajarams work serves as an inspiration
to us all to do more, whether in the private or
public sector, Kerry said.
Through Feed the Future, a presidential
global hunger and food security initiative, the US
is establishing a foundation for lasting progress
against global hunger, he said.

he experiments of an eleven-year-old Indian

student in the UAE would be launched into
space under a NASA programme, a media report
said.
Prerna Pai, a seventh grade student in Sharjah,
has got two of her experiments approved for
launch into space June 26 under NASAs Cubes
in Space (CIS) programme for budding young
scientists, Gulf News reported Friday.
Pai, an aspiring scientist, has been regularly
participating in NASA student activities such
as studying the solar flare last year. She also
features in the space agencys mailing list, the
report said.
The National Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA) launched its CIS
programme in May in partnership with Rubik
Learning Initiative, idoodle software and the
Colorado Space Grant Consortiums RockSat-C
programme.
CIS is an international educational
programme for school children that teaches them
how to design STEM experiments for launch
into space and a total of 75 American students
and 25 students from the rest of the world were
selected for the current launch.
STEM refers to the academic disciplines

of science, technology, engineering and

mathematics.
I had to think a lot when I learned about this
contest and sent them (NASA) many proposals.
My science teacher has always encouraged me
to think out of the box and that inspired me, the
report quoted Pai as saying.
Pai submitted two experiments that she
called To stick or not to stick and time and
pressure.
The first experiment is about studying the
manner in which different adhesives are likely
to behave in space in the absence of atmospheric
pressure, the report said.
The second experiment involves two tiny
bottles -- one made of plastic and the other of
glass -- sealed with a modelling clay cork and
placed in a cube.
Once my ideas were selected, NASA
sent me a kit into which I had to place my
experiments and mail it to them. I was so thrilled
by the news that I even dashed off a thank you
note to NASA, Pai said.
After knowing the results of the experiment,
Pai plans to research the subjects more
thoroughly and send the findings back to NASA.
The programme invites students from around
the world in the age group of 11-14 to devise
experimental payloads for space.
NASA would select 100 designs for launch
into space via a sounding rocket at the agencys
Wallops Flight Facility. A sounding or research
rocket carries scientific instruments into space
to take measurements along a non-orbiting and
parabolic path (trajectory).

Indo-Canadian duo develops

device to detect drug usage
T
wo Canadians of Indian origin have
developed a device that detects marijuana in
a persons breath. Police say it helps to find if a
driver is high on the contraband drug.
Vancouver-based Kal Malhi, a former officer
of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP),
the federal police force, has joined hands with
Indo-Canadian radiologist Raj Attariwala to
develop the device called breathalyzer for the
police.
The breathalyzer is a hand held device that
provides accurate reading of marijuana in a
persons breath, says the report. They have applied
for the patents of the device and it may take an
year before they get it.
I think its more necessary across North
America now than it was before, because
were going through a system when it comes to
marijuana, where marijuana is being made readily
available across our societies, Malhi was quoted
as saying by the paper.
Colorado and Washington states of the US

have legalised marijuana. So, also the Canadian

department of health has allowed medical use of
marijuana.
A family doctor can, under certain
circumstances, prescribe a dose of up to five
grams of marijuana a day (safe dose is 400 mg
of Cannabis that contains less than nine percent
THC) and should be bought from licensed
growers.
After leaving the federal police force in 2011,
Malhi reportedly decided to develop the Cannabis
Breathalyzer. This test has a major advantage - it
can show if a person has smoked marijuana in the
past two hours.
According to the report in the Canadian
daily, In saliva and urine tests, marijuana can be
detected if its been smoked at any point within 72
hours, long after the high has passed.
Its largely based on observations you make
of the person. And the observations arent so
obvious for drugged drivers as they are for drunk
drivers, explains Malhi.

Cakobau has declared her support for the
Prime Minister, Rear Admiral (Retired) Voreqe
Bainimarama and the FijiFirst party.
She was at the partys office at Brown Street
last week to officially show her support for the
party and its leader.
At the FijiFirst office, Adi Litia said: I am
now a staunch FijiFirst supporter.
I have very strong support for them because
I like and also support all the policies of the
Bainimarama government and stand by them.
We as Fijians, as a party, still uphold our
traditions, customs, and iTaukei values.
She said every Fijian, including the iTaukei,
must not be scared of losing what they value
because their rights were well considered under
the 2013 Constitution.
For the iTaukei people, you should not be
scared of losing what you value; your tradition,
your culture, its values, the iVola Ni Kawa Bula
and whatever you have about land ownership.
You must not fear losing it because it is very much

and Trade stand ready to work side-by-side
with the business community in New Zealand.
These were the words of Permanent Secretary
for Trade Shaheen Ali during the Fiji-New
Zealand and New Zealand-Fiji Business Councils
Joint Conference at the Grand Pacific Hotel, Suva
recently. Mr Ali said: We stand ready to work
side-by-side with the business community in New
Zealand to reignite trade and investment between
our two countries, which has fallen stagnant over
the past few years. We dont want New Zealand
investors and businesses to miss out on what we
consider the best trade and investment climate Fiji
has ever seen.
The Bainimarama Government has gone to
great lengths to create a stable and conducive
business environment that encourages growth and
development.
Mr Ali stressed the Fijian Government was
investing significantly in the development of key
infrastructure such as roads, bridges, ports and
airports. Over the past four years, New Zealand
investment has decreased to a negligible level,
with the number of investors more than halved
since 2009. I think we can all agree that this is a
trend we need to reverse. In terms of trade, New
Zealand remains an important partner, accounting

for 10.25 per cent of Fijis total trade.

However, over the past five years our
bilateral trade has only marginally increased, at
less than 10 per cent per annum. During the same
period our trade with China has increased by over
300 per cent.
Trade re-engagement
Fiji is New Zealands largest export
destination in the Pacific region, but imports
from non-traditional partners such as Malaysia,
Indonesia and China are increasing at a steady
rate.
While there is no doubt a new sense of
optimism is in the air, we must also acknowledge
that there is a sense of urgency about how we
move forward from here.
In terms of trade, Fiji firmly believes that
in order for re-engagement to be meaningful, it
should not just be willingness on the part of the
Fijian Government and Fijian industries.
But the New Zealand Government must also
take significant and concrete steps to show their
commitment towards mending relations.
In order to understand the present and talk
about the future, we first have to remember the
past. Since 2007, New Zealands stance towards
Fiji has been counter-productive.

Commemorating long-forgotten battles- and those who gave their lives

- Sujit Chakraborty

ohima/Imphal, When you go home, tell

them of us and say that for their tomorrow,
we gave our today..... reads the epitaph at the
Commonwealth War Cemetery in Kohima.
The cemetery has been beautifully laid out with
lush green grass and is meticulously maintained
by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission
(CWGC). The picturesque Kohima War
Cemetery, a symbolic memorial commemorating
the memories of the men who sacrificed their lives
during World War II, attracts people visiting the
northeast Indian state.
There is a similar terraced cemetery in Imphal,
with little stone markers indicating the final
resting place of 1,602 soldiers - 138 of them
unidentified - from India, Britain, Canada and
Australia, among other countries, with the names
of 917 Indian soldiers inscribed on a plaque. This
too is maintained by the CWGC.
Seventy years ago, the battles of Imphal and
Kohima halted the Japanese advance into India
at the height of World War-II, claiming tens of
thousands of lives on both sides. A three-monthlong commemoration of the event, to remember
the almost forgotten sacrifice of the fallen, will
conclude Saturday in Imphal in the presence of
envoys from the US, Australia and Japan, among
others.
The battles of Kohima and Imphal (March
8, 1944-July 3, 1944), which marked the climax
of the Japanese forces advance into India,
claimed the lives of 30,000 Japanese, left 23,000
injured and 600 were captured, writer and editor
Rajkumar Kalyanjit Singh told, adding: The

Allies suffered 17,500 casualties.

The fierce gunfights were considered amongst
the bloodiest during Second World War, said
Singh, who edits Manipuri newspaper Marup.
In Moirang, 45 km northeast of Imphal,
there is an INA (Indian National Army) museum
displaying letters, photographs, badges of rank
and other articles associated with the force. The
INA flag was first hoisted on Indian soil on April
14, 1944.
Noted historian and writer Sekhar Datta said

: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made a

timely and appreciable announcement to build a
suitable war memorial in Delhi to commemorate
the sacrifices made by umpteen number of Indian
soldiers and officers since Independence.
Modis scheme should also include the
obscure corners of Manipur and other places of
the region which bear witness to the glorious
and bloody armed struggle for freedom launched
with indomitable courage by the immortal
revolutionary leader, Netaji Subhas Chandra
Bose, Datta told.
While launching the armed offensive under

the banner of INA with Japanese backing Netajis

sole aim had been to free his country and drive
away the imperialist British government. In April
1944, solders of INA had captured Moirang
besides laying a siege around Imphal and within
days the soldiers of INA had captured the Kohima
fort and some cantonments between Kohima and
Dimapur.
It is a tragic part of the freedom movements
history that INA could not sustain the offensive
owing to lack of Japanese support, heavy
monsoon rain and reinforcement obtained by
British, but this epic self-sacrificing struggle of
INA under Netaji constitutes a glorious part of
Indian history which deserves to be recognised
and appreciated, Datta added.
It is true that there is a war memorial with
a library and some exhibits related to INA at
Moirang, but the hallowed site where INA
soldiers and patriots fell by the droves needs
to have a full-fledged war memorial to honour
one of Indias greatest freedom fighters and his
followers. Similarly another war memorial can
also be built in Kohima also in holy memory of
Netaji and INA.
Hope the Modi government will honour its
commitment and raise grand war memorials in
Manipur and Nagaland, Datta added.
India has fought five wars since independence,
and we dont have a memorial for a single one,
Mohan Guruswamy, a fellow at the Observer
Research Foundation, was recently quoted by the
New York Times as saying.

To B(uy) or not to B(uy)

A series of articles about house buying in New Zealand
- Himanshu J. Trivedi, Solicitor and Barrister

any a times I wondered, as a theatre student

and enthusiast, as to whether William
Shakespeare would have that dilemma?
He expressed many human emotions very
well in his plays, very ably and profoundly, but
the dilemma of buying a section and building a
house? And if he would have come across such an
issue, would he have written a comedy, tragedy or
something which had mystery, comedy, tragedy,
laughs and tears all intermingled, albeit in that
mix, there would have to be lawyers.
Well, this is the issue a much lesser human
being, a friend of mine and his family are currently
facing. They are spending practically all their
available day time in their holidays in house
hunting to make it their first home.
Now, the learned readers will say that Oh,
so what is new in that? We all have either gone
through this or are going to go through this.
There are people who would not even think of
buying a house as either their home is where the
heart is or they just dont care, because of the
hassles involved.
As a small time lawyer, when one looks at the
real issues (after observing the life around us for
such a long time as a normal human being), one
realises how much ignorance and misinformation
prevails in the field. Therefore, though many
more able hands have written reams of paper (and
now web-space/bytes/data) about all these things
before and yet many more are going to do that
after me as well, yours faithfully is going to be
looking at some of the aspects of the proverbial
Bread, Clothes and Housing or Roti,
KapdaAurMakan as known in Hindi.
So, based on my interactions with my friend
and his wife mainly, as two sons are quietly doing
their studies and are not much concerned as such
about to B(uy) or not to B(uy) issues, except

being curious and supportive of their parents,

I have come across a few things which I shall
discuss. Beforehand, I must warn those who are
speculators and deal in houses, sections and
other properties as if they are hot cakes, please
be-aware that this article/discussion is primarily
focusing on people like me and such laypersons,
who sometimes have it as a big item in their
bucket-lists of life or just want to do something
for the future of our kids, and is not meant for
the consumption of speculators or gamblers in
property business.
The first thing is whether one needs to rent
or to buy. Now this is a very tricky question for
someif one is living in a city like Auckland. If one
looks objectively, one can safely conclude that
vis--vis the amount of rent one is paying, the
renters are not getting what is known as value
for money, but then, landlords will start cleaning
their guns aiming at my head, saying that it is not
affordable and easily manageable thing, with
the type of tenants we come across and the mess,
the non-payments or irregular payments etc.
and the return being peanuts of investment.
Anyways, both the sides cannot ever be happy,
as otherwise, the lawyers will be going hungry
if there is world peace around and the judges
of the courts may have to try and find some
occupation which can keep them occupied, as it is
human nature not to be contended.
My friend came up with a brilliant argument,
said to me See, I am paying $410.00 for a two
bedroom place, which is quite okay, but small for
our family of four as such as two boys are growing
fast and if I muster courage and buy a house in
proper range, the instalment will be coming nearly
to the same amount. Just, to understand that
argument and whether it was much thought about,
I asked in return, so which areas you would

be looking at to have a house, how far they are,

what about commuting, how much deposit, how
many years till that house become your house
instead of Banks (Financial Institutions House)
etc. Then, he paused, gave me some answers, but
started re-thinking. One of the issues which he
is facing is he is not getting something which he
would love to have in the proper rangeas that
will again be very subjective. So cut your coat
according to cloth will either make a coat which
does not fit properly or sometimes someone may
ask, was it meant to be a coat?
Point is, that everyone craves for settlement
and security, but is it worth the costs involved?
May be, may be not which entirely depends
on many factors, which, if they gel well, will be
resulting in happier outcomes but when they go
wrong, the people involved go through some of
the most traumatic times of their lives.
Making a home out of house is secondary
thing, first thing is to have a house.
The first and the foremost common sense
advice, which you all would be knowing very
well, is - check your own needs and urges.
What are you doing it for? Ask that question
and discuss the possible answers. Because X has
purchased a house and so I being Y shall purchase
it as we belong to the same class in the society?
Or my better half (either can say that to the other)
is now pushing for our own home as everyone
who came around our time from India has it now.

Unique study into Asian nutrition in New Zealand

any Asian New Zealanders are more likely

to change their diet, the longer they live
here, according to a new study.
The study looking at the similarities and
differences in diet, nutrition and health for Asian
subgroups in New Zealand used data from the
2008/09 Adult National Nutrition Survey.
The results suggest that the longer some
Asians live in New Zealand, the more likely they
are to adopt some features of a European diet.
This was more so for South Asians in contrast
to East and South East Asians (ESEA).
About 10 per cent of participants in the
Adult National Nutrition survey identified with
Asian ethnicity and this was comparable to the
percentage in the New Zealand population. The
majority of these people were migrants who had
lived in New Zealand for less than 10 years.
They were divided into sub-groups; South
Asians, (people who identified as Indian,
Bangladeshi, Nepalese, Pakistani, Fiji Indian,
Afghani and Sri Lankan); or East and South
East Asian (people who identified as Chinese,
Malaysian, Taiwanese, Filipino, Cambodian,
Vietnamese, Burmese, Indonesian, Thai,
Japanese, Korean and Tibetan).
New Zealand European and Others (NZEO)
included all other ethnicities such as Latin
American and African.
The analysis for Asian participants was done
by Dr Sherly Parackal from the University of
Aucklands School of Population Health, (in
collaboration with researchers Dr Claire Smith
and Associate Professor Winsome Parnell,
from the Department of Human Nutrition at the
University of Otago).
This is the first time this type of analysis

Vitamins and minerals such

as retinol, niacin, vitamin
B12 and zinc were also lower
among South Asian females.
Given the high percentage of
South Asians reporting that
they never eat red meat or
chicken, it is not surprising
that biochemical indices of
iron status were lower for this
group,
using national data has been done in New Zealand
for Asians, says Dr Parackal. The analysis has
enabled comparisons between the two Asian subgroups and provides new information on their
similarities and differences in dietary intakes and
health outcomes.
The study found there were significant
differences between the Asian sub-groups
regarding the dietary guidelines for fruit and
vegetables, bread, milk and meat consumption.
A different dietary profile was evident for
the Asian sub-groups with higher percent energy
from carbohydrate than NZEO, due to their
predominantly carbohydrate based diets, she
says.
A unique aspect of the South Asian subgroup was that in contrast to ESEA, they reported

consuming lower amounts of meat, poultry

and processed meats than NZEO, she says. It
followed that South Asians also had lower intakes
of fat, protein (among females), and saturated fats
and cholesterol (among males).
Vitamins and minerals such as retinol, niacin,
vitamin B12 and zinc were also lower among
South Asian females. Given the high percentage
of South Asians reporting that they never eat
red meat or chicken, it is not surprising that
biochemical indices of iron status were lower for
this group, says Dr Parackal.
She says that although some differences were
not of statistical significance due to the small
sample sizes, the strong prevalence of diagnosed
diabetes among South Asians (12 percent)
in comparison to the other study participants

could not be ignored.

Using ethnic specific cut-offs* the prevalence
of obesity among South Asian males and females
was much higher than NZEO and NSEA females,
says Dr Parackal.
The results of this study show that dietary
habits, nutrient intakes, blood indices and body
size differ significantly between Asian Subgroups
and emphasises the need to acknowledge these
differences in future diet and disease-related
research, she says.
Future national surveys should include an
adequate sample of Asian sub-groups so that
researchers can draw comparisons and make
recommendations for the public health status of
these groups.

Film making is a great process...acting is
great and I am enjoying myself in production

The actor, son of late political leader

Whether I want to join it or not is a

Theres an honesty in dark themes: Filmmaker

Anurag Kashyap
F

ilmmaker Anurag Kashyap loves to put

societys underbelly under a scanner and his
films like Black Friday, Dev D and Gangs
Of Wasseypur are a case in point. Now he has
come up with another dark drama Ugly, saying
he delves into such themes because he believes in
showing real things.
I think theres a certain honesty and truth in
dark themes. Rest everything else is a camouflage
- like they decorate a cake with icing. I believe in
real, and thats what I show, Kashyap told during
a tete-?-tete.
Thats precisely what he does in Ugly, which
had its Asia premiere at the recently concluded
third edition of the Ladakh International Film
Festival (LIFF) in this Jammu and Kashmir
region and was well-received.
He put together Ugly after coming across
multiple true-life stories during his research.
Ugly, which was initially screened at the
Cannes International Film Festival earlier this
year, is set for a Sep 19 release.
Meanwhile, the moviemakers Yudh, his
ambitious TV project, which is 71-year-old
Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchans first
fiction show for the small screen, is ready to go on
air. He says that there are many factors about the
show that excite him.
Theres this whole excitement...the whole
idea that Mr. Bachchan is wanting to do (fiction
on) television and hes taking chances - an actor

who is in his 70s and is taking chances and

redefining things and doing things himself...its
amazing, he said.
And that Im getting to participate in it is a
high in itself for me, added Kashyap, the creative
director of the show, which is slated to go on air
on Sony Entertainment Television in July.
The Big B-Kashyap partnership doesnt
end here. Amitabh will be seen in a cameo in
Ghoomketu, which is co-produced by Kashyap,

who also stars in the film.

Theres another film that Kashyap and
Amitabh have joined hands for.
On that, the filmmaker said: Its still in its
writing phase. Mr. Bachchan has become very
busy right now.
Thanks to his past successes, Kashyaps plate
is full and he is also roping in big names for his
projects.
For instance, there is Ranbir Kapoor- and

Now it is in post-production. We take a lot of

Instrumental in introducing a new style of
content, presentation and genre to the Indian
cinema, Kashyap is sure that he would continue
making films he wants to.
Nevertheless he is glad that between him and
his partners in Phantom Films, Vikramaditya

Creativity is not the only thing that keeps him

Kashyap says that running a disclaimer is not a
bad idea, but the current format is not right.
People need to see that. It is fine to put an ad

just distracting, its insulting, he said.

Charandas Chor- The Honest Thief, A rib-tickling and a heartwarming entertainer

Thashika Thangamma

he pit of a theatre is the one place where the

tears of the virtuous and wicked men alike
are mingled, Charandas chor is one such theatre
play that displays the double standards and the

contradictions of the society in a satirical comedy.

Ironically as the name suggests, the play
Charandas chor which is comical and rich in script
is about an atypical thief who lives by his principles
of not lying, given as a word of honor to his guru.
The character through his impish mannerisms
brings out the message of social issues, the play
tried to subtly put across to the audience furnishing
into a complete family entertainer with its
heartwarming and funny sequences.
After the emotionally heavy production
Rudali, Prayas, a well appreciated local theatre,
celebrated the success of recreating the magic
of their much appreciated heart-warming play,
Charandas Chor. This famous play of playwright

Habib Tanveer is a Rajasthani folktale originally

envisioned by Vijaydan Detha.
The play which brought laurels to Prayas in
the year 2005, was directed by Amit Ohdedar and
Padma Akula assisted in the directing the play
The play meant Nostalgia. Working with the core
group, Amit Ohdedar and Sudeepta Vyas is always
a joy and a privilege. We are a family, Prayas
family. Padma told speaking about her experience

says, It was quiet difficult to play her role due

to her erratic likes and dislikes. To display the
emotions behind the sudden orders she gave about
either loving something or destroying something,
was tough, and much to the contradiction of my
real personality she was an Enigma. Further
talking about the overwhelming reviews she says,
It feels like the hard work of months has paid off.
The good reviews are indeed the ultimate payment

with the theatre group and the play

In the 2005 production when the entire crew
was small and intimate I was the assistant director,
choreography, a dancer, makeup and wardrobe and
also played a role. After nearly 10 years, in 2014,
I am the assistant director, makeup and wardrobe.
A full circle. This play for me is indeed special
added Padma recollecting her association with the
play.
The confident energy of the cast that blended
well with their antics and reactions to the
consequent occurrence complimented the narrative
of the play. Bhavna Chahal, who played the role of
Kalavati, a regal queen, who had a very impulsive
personality seemed to be a demanding role to play.
Speaking about the challenges of the role Bhavna

for a performer.
The simple yet appealing set design, with
apparels that weaved along the characters, the
evocative lighting along with the live band
performance collectively added to the style and
grace of the performance engaging the audience
all through the play.
What a gorgeous, glorious, mind-blowing
entertaining play Jack woon, who was among the
audience quoted enthralled by the brilliancy of the
performance.
Bridging the Indian classic and folklore theatre
with the contemporary, the play its timeless quality
to this date. The vividness of this remarkable
rendition can only be comprehended through true
theatre experience.

SRK conferred Frances

highest honour

rench Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius

Tuesday conferred his countrys highest award
- Knight of the Legion of Honour - on Bollywood
superstar Shah Rukh Khan in recognition of his
outstanding contribution to cultural diversity
across the world.
The function was held at the Taj Mahal Palace
hotel here.
There are different moments in life that make
you feel that you are on the right track and this is
one such moment. I am truly humbled to receive
this honour, said Shah Rukh, thanking French
President Francois Hollande and Foreign Minister
Fabius for finding him fitting for this honour.
I am a part of the Indian film fraternity and
it makes me feel proud to be recognized for the

field I am most passionate about. This honour has

further motivated to take Indian cinema to the next
level of acceptance, love and glory. And thank
you France for being so loving and appreciative of
Indian films, its extremely encouraging, he said.
Its my mothers birthday. If she was alive,
apart from being extremely old, she would have
been extremely happy that her son has got the
highest and the most prestigious honour in the
world... so thank you on behalf of my mother,
Shah Rukh said.
Created in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, the
Legion of Honour is the highest award given by
the France for outstanding service to the country,
regardless of the nationality of the recipients.

akistani
qawwali
maestro Rahat Fateh
Ali Khan, known for giving
hit Bollywood numbers
like Jiya dhadak dhadak
and Sajda, is happy that
record label Universal
Music India came forward
to support his album
Back 2 Love. He says
that it is high time music
companies also invested in
independent artists.
Rahats Back 2 Love
has come after a sevenyear gap. He says that
quality work takes time,
but also adds that delays
happen because record
labels usually prefer Bollywood projects to
private albums.
After a long time a company has taken this
step. Bollywood (music) is a big investment and
the kind of promotion that is done, a regular album
cant match it. An individual artist cant spend so
much and promote it in the same way. The artist
needs a company, Khan told
This is not the first time a Pakistani artist has
collaborated with an India-based music label.
In the past, Atif Aslam and the band Jal were
supported by Tips, while Adnan Sami teamed up
with T-Series.
There are other musicians from across

the border who collaborate with both Indian

filmmakers and music labels.
Meanwhile, Rahat, nephew of late legendary
Pakistani qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan,
compares music to love and says good music, like
love, takes a while to bloom; hence it took him so
many years to create the album.
Love takes a lot of time. Similarly, to create
good music and to produce it, it takes time and
people also take time to accept or reject it. The
songs are easy to listen to and the album is a
compilation of 10 romantic tracks, said the
40-year-old musician who has performed several
times in India.
