Carrousel 3: Itinerary 8
(Revised March 1999)

Introduction
This document is a tool designed to help give teachers a clear description of what should be
covered in Itinerary 8 of the Mathematics Carrousel 3 textbook. The textbook offers more
material than can be covered in most regular classes. However, this summary should be
seen as a guide only; the amount of time available as well as the students' interests and
capabilities will determine the materiel which is covered. Further information about the
material is found in the Teacher's Guide.

Objectives Covered in Itinerary 8

This itinerary covers Objective 3.1: To solve problems involving situations represented by a
one-variable statistical distribution. Students will be able to present data in the form of
tables or histograms. They will be able to use measures of central tendency to analyze or
describe a distribution. This objective extends what the students learned about graphs and
tables in Secondary 1.
It is important to refer to the MEQ Curriculum document for more details on the
objectives of the program (pp. 36 - 37).

Time 15% of the year.

Comments
1. Stem and leaf plots are optional and will be covered in the Secondary 4 programmes.
2. It is important for students to be familiar with the concept of the mean and not just
to apply formulas. Please refer to the Teacher,s Guide page 654 - 655 for clarification.
3. It is more important for students to understand the meaning of the measures of
central tendency than to know how to calculate them.
4. The questions from the Calculab could be divided up and used as daily 5-minute
class warm-ups.
5. Test questions in the Teacher's Guide should be edited to reflect what is
pertinent to the objectives of the program and thus what is valued.
