CAMPUS SAFETY

1. ROAD SAFETY AWARENESS MASSEY UNIVERSITY MAIN ENTRANCE

It is apparent that a number of staff and students do not know, or choose to ignore the Road
Code as it relates to Stop or Give Way signs.

A significant number of vehicles and cycles do not stop at the Stop Sign at the main entrance as
they leave the Campus heading into town. Vehicles must come to a complete stop at the line
painted on the road; coming to a stop behind someone who has stopped correctly does not
count. (A)

Similarly vehicles turning into the Campus from the City bound lanes of Tennant Drive have
right of way over vehicles leaving the Campus yet many drivers and cyclists ignore this. (B)

During the day there are also issues at the Stop sign at the point where University Avenue
meets the Main Drive, there have been a number of near misses when vehicles do not stop and
fail to see cyclists leaving the cycle path.

This area has more than its share of accidents and simply following the rules will make a
difference. We do not want to see people injured or worse.

If driver / cyclist behaviour does not improve we will ask the Police for assistance in enforcing
the law.

2. SLIP CYCLE RENOVATIONS MAIN DRIVE
Alteration work to the slip cycle entry on Main Drive was necessary as many cyclists were
falling victim to what was becoming known as a cyclist black spot, and known injuries have
resulted in serious harm.

The redesigned slip cycle entry promotes:
Soft angle approach and safer entry onto the shared pathway
Increased natural light at entry
Reduced shared user conflicts at the Courtyard Complex intersection

To ensure you reap the benefits of the redeveloped slip cycle, as a cyclist you must continue to
exercise the following:
The ring road is speed limited to 30km for all vehicle users and this includes cyclists
Please descend the hill with caution at all times
Always exercise vigilance and care when approaching and entering onto the shared path
It is courteous to let pedestrians know you when you are approaching from behind
New physical and painted signage will be installed so please adhere to these
The existing slip-cycle entry point will be removed from further use

New slip-cycle for entry onto the shared pathway descending Main Drive replaces slip-cycle entry located just past the
Courtyard Complex Intersection
