The DBC Group is a family-run enterprise. The letters DBC
stand for the founder of the group Darabshaw Bomanji Cursetjee Dubash who founded the group in 1929. The Dubash family has, however, been involved in the shipping arena since 1810 and is one of India's oldest business families. The evolution of the Group mirrors that of the shipping industry in India.
Starting off as interpreters or 'Dubashes (deriving their name from 'dho'-'basha', meaning those who speak two languages) in the ports of Bombay, the DBC Group has over the years been active in almost every area of the shipping business - from stevedoring to ship agencies and from ship chartering to repairs and maintenance of containers.
The DBC Group has also diversified outside the shipping arena into processed chemicals, trading agricultural products and real estate development.
For 32 years, DBC Sons (Bombay) Limited was Asia's largest stevedore, handling over five million tonnes of cargo annually. The group also partnered with the erstwhile P&O Ports Limited to set up India's first private international container terminal, the Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal (NSICT).
The Group is currently run by fourth generation cousins Tushad and Arvind Dubash.
