The DESIGO building automation and
control system: the powerful, open system
With its modular design, the DESIGO building automation and control
system offers virtually unlimited scope for operation, monitoring and
control. The scaleable system covers everything from small, stand-
alone buildings to large, networked building complexes. DESIGO is
ideal not only for typical HVAC systems, such as heating, ventilation,
air conditioning and sanitation, but also for all other building services,
such as lighting and electricity, or fire and security.

Distinguishing features of the DESIGO system

Open to integration
The open system architecture is widely supported, making it possible to integrate third-
party systems at all three levels of the system. Even for the exchange of information
between system components, DESIGO uses well-established standard protocols,
adopted throughout the world:
the BACnet standard, both for communication between the management and
automation stations, and for communication from one automation station to another,
and LONMARK for room automation. DESIGO also supports components and systems
with interfaces such as OPC, Ethernet, LON, EIB, Modbus and M-bus.

Easy to operate
DESIGO is distinguished by its exceptional ease of operation. The attractive local
operator units offer large fonts, and provide clear user guidance and a graphics-based
display. Operation from the management station is based on the Microsoft Windows
operating system and designed to take account of ergonomic principles.

Innovative Web access

With PX Web operation, and DESIGO WEB, the DESIGO system makes use of Web
technology both at the automation level and at the management level. Fault messages
can be received and acknowledged with cost-efficient standard equipment such as
Web-Pad, PC or mobile phone. The same technology can be used to retrieve data,
trend information, statistics and other HTML reports, irrespective of the location of the
user. In this way, those responsible for the system can be kept up to date at all times.

The scaleable system: for all projects from small to large

DESIGO is the perfect choice for all projects, no matter how small or large. An
extensive, modular range of automation stations, a variety of operator units, modular
application software and a flat system topology all combine to ensure low start-up costs
for small systems. At the same time these systems can be extended at any time, and
expanded into comprehensive large-scale systems.

Economical in every phase

The installation of highly automated building services plant is increasingly taken for
granted. Due to technological advances and improved project handling, costs per data
point are falling steadily. A prime concern in the field of building services, however, is
the overall cost over the life cycle of the plant. With sensible start-up costs, efficient and
cost-effective support during operation, plus flexible service options, the DESIGO
building automation and control system is the right choice for the economy-minded
building operator.

6
DESIGO system topologies
The DESIGO system can be divided into three levels: the management level, the
automation level and the field level. By virtue of distributed intelligence, each of these
levels operates both autonomously and in a network.
Within the network, the DESIGO building automation and control system uses
manufacturer-neutral standard protocols for communications, specifically BACnet for
the management level and automation level, and LONMARK for the field level.

The principle DESIGO system components:

• DESIGO INSIGHT, the management • DESIGO RXC, the room automation

System design for small to medium-sized buildings

A number of PX automation stations and RXC room controllers can be interconnected
without difficulty via BACnet over LON and, depending on the size of the system,
monitored and operated with one or more graphics-based, network-compatible PXM20
operator units. For remote operation, the system can be extended to include Web
operation with the PX-WEB software. This Web solution presents the resident engineer
with all the functions of the PXM20 operator unit whenever required, with the advantage
of access from home, for example. In the event of a fault, alarm notification can be
arranged via SMS or e-mail.

System design for medium-sized to large
building complexes
The DESIGO INSIGHT management station lets you get the most out of your plant.
Even in systems with a hundred data points or fewer, it proves its worth. The plant is
operated using highly informative, animated graphics. Optimum building operation is
ensured with scheduler programs that can be centrally operated, a clear, consolidated
alarm handling system and a wide range of other options. The DESIGO system can be
embedded without difficulty in existing IT Ethernet/LAN infrastructures.
Naturally, DESIGO can be expanded into a multi-user system. Remote operation via
the Web should also be mentioned here: this is an option which can be implemented
with DESIGO WEB and the PX-WEB solution for Web operation.

Distributed buildings
Up to 1,000 remote sites can be operated and monitored by telephone from a
DESIGO INSIGHT management station. In the event of a fault, the automation stations
automatically call the higher-level management station, which displays the fault to the
user in a "pop-up" window. The user simply clicks a button to navigate to the
associated graphics. In the case of the "life-safety" feature, the modem connections are
checked at regular intervals.
For remote access, connections can be established not only by modem, but also via
Ethernet/LAN. The management station can be connected anywhere on the in-house
LAN, from where it has access to the automation system via the router.

System functions

Trend/History
Fully integrated trend data processing allows effortless evaluation and analysis of real-
time (online) data and (offline) historical data. The trend feature facilitates the
monitoring and fine-tuning of the plant. In the DESIGO system this feature is
implemented in compliance with BACnet standard. This means that nothing now stands
in the way of displaying BACnet data from other manufacturers.
Data for trend analysis can be logged in a variety of different ways:

Trend logging options:

• Continuous logging • Polling
• Single run • COV polling (Change of Value)
• Transient run • Event-driven polling

Online trend With the Online Trend option, individual data points are registered on a COV basis or
through polling, and displayed immediately. The values are stored temporarily, in order
to observe transient response patterns, for example.

Features of Online Trend:

• Real-time display of process data • COV-driven data
• Short time periods (seconds, minutes, hours) • Temporary data, not normally stored.

Offline trend Offline Trend by contrast, does not depend on a permanent connection between the
automation station and operator unit, because the values in the automation station can
be stored temporarily for retrieval on the operator unit as needed.

11/48
Features of Offline Trend:

• Offline data display, no connection required • Cyclical acquisition of data

• Longer periods of time (days, months) • Data acquisition in the automation system.
The data is uploaded periodically to a
database at the management level.

Graphs can be displayed on both the PXM20 operator unit and the management
station, in the latter case as 2d or 3d graphs and in color.

Alarm management
One of the most important features of a building automation and control system is the
ability to generate alarms automatically in the event of faults; these faults may occur in
the HVAC and other systems or in the automation system itself. The management of
alarms (generation, display and handling) must be simple, efficient and consistent at all
levels of the system. In this context, DESIGO makes full use of the BACnet standard as
a basis, and supports the following three types of alarm:
• Simple Alarms (for alarms not requiring user interaction)
• Basic Alarms (for alarms requiring acknowledgement)
• Extended Alarms (for alarms requiring acknowledgement and reset)
DESIGO also supports the 256 alarm priority levels of the BACnet standard, which can,
for example, be consolidated at the management station into ten priority levels.

Alarm messages When an alarm occurs, it is automatically detected, registered and transferred to
operator units such as the PXM20, to PX Web for Web operation or to the DESIGO
INSIGHT management station. Informative alarm messages are also transmitted to
remote devices such as mobile phones, fax machines, printers, PCs and Web
browsers, via SMS and e-mail. Clear alarm lists provide a view of all pending and time-
stamped alarms at a glance, and permit straightforward processing. Pop-up windows
and audible and visual signals alert operators to incoming and pending alarms.

Alarm routing Alarms are transferred on the basis of time, priority and/or plant type with an
outstandingly powerful alarm routing system at the management station. In this way,
important messages reach their destination 24 hours a day throughout the year,
whether or not there is an operator sitting at the management station. Users are
supported in their work by various overview options which help ensure a fast and
correct response even in critical alarm situations.

12
Scheduler / Calendar
One of the basic functions of a building automation and control system is time control of
procedures and processes.
Ventilation, heating, air conditioning, lighting, door locks etc, are controlled on the basis
of opening times and working hours in buildings such as offices, banks, restaurants,
department stores and schools.
Scheduler programs ensure that the heating and lighting are switched off automatically
at the end of the working day, that the temperature in the building is reduced at night,
and that the plant is not kept running for longer than necessary. They can also be used
to switch off the air conditioning in certain rooms during holidays.

Saving energy The ideal scheduler programs help save energy and increase the service life of the
plant.

Increasing the service life of Research has shown that scheduler programs are rarely used to best effect to save
plant energy and extend the service life of plant, because the programming operations
required are too complex. This is another area where DESIGO excels with its
straightforward and exceptionally user-friendly operation.

Standard BACnet functions DESIGO is based on the worldwide BACnet standard, in which even complex functions
such as scheduler programs are standardized. Time-switching operations in the
DESIGO building automation and control system are implemented in accordance with
this standard, using the BACnet objects "Schedule" and "Calendar". These powerful
functions can be operated flexibly, from simple 7-day programs for standard operation
from Monday to Sunday, to more sophisticated, recurring exceptions, such as business
opening times every second and fourth Saturday in the month.
With the standard BACnet functions, even BACnet schedules from third-party
manufacturers can now be monitored for the first time via the easy-to-use PXM20
operator unit, the PX Web controller and the DESIGO INSIGHT management station.

Scheduler program in the PXM20 operator unit and on the DESIGO INSIGHT management station

For safety reasons, schedules and calendars are stored in the automation station, so
that in the event of a network or PC failure, the automation level can continue to
operate autonomously.

13/48
Access rights
Access rights can be used to filter information from the plant and system based on the
individual requirements of a user. The resident engineer or the service engineers, for
example, only have access to the information they strictly need. A distinction can also
be made between read access and write access. Certain users may be able to read a
value but not modify it, while other users may have extended access rights, enabling
them both to read and to modify values.

Freely-definable access rights Only authorized personnel are granted access to the system via the operator units and
the management station. When a user enters a user name and password, the system
verifies the associated access rights and enables access to the relevant plant and
programs. Read and write access rights can be defined in detail, down to individual
information points.
These are assigned to one of the seven following access classes.

Internal Advanced service activities

Adaptation
Service Basic service activities
Administration
Expert Extended operation
Standard Basic operation
Customer

In addition to the above, it is possible to enable or disable he use of the various

applications, access to individual graphics pages and access to entire sites from the
management station for specific user groups. The tailoring of the environment to each
user ensures clear areas of responsibility and answerability, so simplifying cooperation
between the various user groups.

14
Communication – Networks

Technical designation
Unique addressing of all elements is essential for the identification of the plant and the
associated elements. In this area DESIGO has introduced an innovation, the "Technical
View", which is based on the user's viewpoint. This standardized hierarchically
structured view is based on the needs of the users of the plant. Addressing is thus not
based on the device-focused viewpoint of the automation stations (e.g.
"Controller08/DigitalOutput02"), but on the user's viewpoint, e.g.:
Clear-text designation "Location Kingston/Ventilation, Building 6/Air handling, 3rd floor/Supply air fan/Fan

Fast location of alarms The hierarchical structure is ideally suited to various types of plant, such as primary
plant, room systems and integrated systems, for example. Naturally, clear-text
designations are used throughout the system, appearing for example in alarm
messages, facilitating fast location of faults.

Communication standards: specifically designed for building services

Building automation and control system projects are increasingly engineered without
recourse to costly gateway solutions for the exchange of information. With the BACnet
open communications protocol, compliant devices can be interconnected at low cost.
The worldwide BACnet standard was developed under the auspices of ASHRAE
specifically for the needs of building services. BACnet networks provide all subscribers
with access to all the data and functions of the connected devices.

BACnet and LONMARK DESIGO uses the two worldwide standard protocols BACnet and LONMARK for the
exchange of information among its own system components. The BACnet
communication protocol is used for the exchange of information between one PX
automation station and another, and between DESIGO PX and DESIGO INSIGHT.
DESIGO uses Ethernet/IP, LON or PTP (point-to-point) as the transport medium. At the
field level, DESIGO RXC uses LONMARK, the standard ideally suited to the
requirements at this level.

15/48
Features of BACnet
The open BACnet communications protocol, a worldwide standard, has the following
special features:
• BACnet supports modern networks such as Ethernet, ARCnet, LONTALK, RS485 and
point-to-point connections.
• BACnet provides 23 predefined standard objects, including special objects for
applications such as trend logging, averaging, alarm distribution, time scheduling
and the connection of fire and safety systems, including fire detection systems etc.
• BACnet systems offer maximum interoperability with minimum engineering.
• BACnet supports decentralized systems with distributed intelligence.
• There are no user fees associated with BACnet – anyone can develop and use
BACnet solutions.

Shell and Taskbar

The shell is the first application to appear when DESIGO INSIGHT is started. It is
displayed with a taskbar. It provides fast and direct access to all the user applications,
and displays important status information.
In systems with several remote installations, it is possible to switch from one plant to
another via the taskbar, subject, here too, to the appropriate access rights. This
ensures clear demarcation lines between the various areas of responsibility and
answerability.
The user's entry into the system is simplified by user-specific start-sequences with
preselected programs and plant.

Plant Viewer
Plant Viewer displays the areas of a building and the associated plant in graphical form.
The user works interactively with these views to monitor and control the data points
throughout the building.
Process display Plant Viewer is based on the Citect process display software supplied by Citect Pty Ltd.
Citect is a world leader in the supply of SCADA systems.
Numerous windows of different sizes can be displayed simultaneously (overlapping
or tiled).
Even large graphics, such as floor plans etc. can be accommodated, and the freely
definable page size makes them easy to view.
Setpoints, alarms etc. can be manipulated directly in the graphics. The user can modify
a value or acknowledge an alarm simply by clicking on the relevant object.

Real-time display Measured values, setpoints, operating modes and alarms are displayed on the screen
in real-time, and updated continuously. The form of display is determined in the
engineering phase. Changes are indicated either by the object symbol, e.g. through
animation or a change in shape or color, or by a change in color, shape, text or
movement of the values affected.

Alarm management

Alarm Viewer
The Alarm Viewer application displays alarms by type, and provides the user with
helpful information as to the type of action required by the system. With its extensive
filter and search functions, Alarm Viewer facilitates fast and well-targeted access to
the required information.
In larger systems with more than one management station, all management stations
access the same alarm database. An alarm for any given management station is
entered in this database and automatically displayed on all other management stations.

The processing is different from one management station to another:

• Only the management station defined as a destination for the alarm can forward the
event and display an alarm window ("pop-up").
• Pop-up windows are configured specifically in the Alarm Router on each
management station.
• To acknowledge or reset an alarm, a management station must be connected to the
site to which the alarm object belongs.

Functions in Alarm Viewer:

• View, acknowledge and reset single or • Read associated alarm help text with
multiple alarms operating instructions or additional
• Display the associated alarm property information in text form
sheet with detailed data point information • Object-oriented navigation to other
applications, such as Plant Viewer and
Log Viewer

19/48
Pop-up windows
The pop-up window is an important means of attracting the attention of the user in the
event of an alarm. Incoming alarms are displayed in a pop-up window that opens on the
Windows desktop and appears in the foreground of all other applications (including
third-party applications).
If several alarms occur, they are displayed one after the other. To further alert the user
to the alarm with an audible signal, an audio file (.wav) can be added to each alarm
window definition.

Alarm Router
The Alarm Router application provides for highly effective building management:
important messages or events in the building automation and control system are
transferred to specific receivers without the need for any user action at the
management station. Alarm Router is a background application which starts when
DESIGO INSIGHT is started, whether or not a user or site is connected. Alarms and
important system events can be transferred via the following media:
• Printers
• Fax machines
• Pagers
• Mobile phones
• E-mail systems

Criteria for the transfer of Alarms can be grouped according to various criteria. A routing table defines the
alarms conditions under which these alarm groups are to be routed to the assigned receivers.
In the event of connection problems, the alarm messages can be transmitted to
alternative receivers. The criteria include the following, for example:
• Time (e.g. at night, switch to the printer in the night security guard's office)
• Responsibility for the site (e.g. send a fax to the company responsible for
maintaining the air conditioning)
• Urgency of the alarm (e.g. only call resident engineer by pager in the case of high
priority alarms)

20
Time Scheduler
The Time Scheduler application in DESIGO INSIGHT can be used for central
programming of all time-controlled functions in the building services plant, including the
individual room control system.
Graphics-based operation The facilities for graphics-based operation of the weekly schedules and exception
programs, the user can modify and optimize scheduler programs at any time and
without difficulty.

Principle functions:
• Graphics-based overview and manipulation • Direct entry of various operating modes
of all scheduler programs in the system (e.g. Comfort, Standby, Energy Hold-Off)
• Easy graphics-based programming of • Storage and processing are independent
switch times of the management station
• Programs invoked directly from the plant • Report printed in different display formats
graphics

Trend logging

Trend Viewer
The Trend Viewer application is used to review current process data in real time
(online) and past process data (offline) over a period of time. Trend Viewer is an easy-
to-handle tool used to optimize the operation of plant and reduce costs.

Activities in Trend Viewer:

• Log process values over a period of time • Monitor current plant conditions
• Track energy consumption • Plant optimization and fine-tuning

21/48
Up to ten process values can be displayed in 2D and 3D graphs in a single trend view.
Several trend views can be displayed simultaneously in different, overlapping windows.
Both online and offline data (and even data from the archive) can be displayed
simultaneously in separate windows, enabling the user to compare past and current
situations.

Drag

Drop

Objects can be dragged from the System Browser and dropped directly into Trend Viewer

Essentially, trend data can be displayed in three different modes:

• Online trend logging: displays real-time process data which is updated whenever a
change of value (COV) occurs, or as the result of a time-based scan
• Offline trend logging: displays past process data which has been uploaded to a
database at the management level.
• Archive data: displays older data which has been moved from the trend database
into archive files

The trend views can be saved and invoked at a later date. Online trend data is
continuously logged and stored in the trend database.

Advanced Data Processing (ADP), Consumption Control (CC)

ADP and CC are add-on software packages. These add-ons are used for effective
storage, archiving and evaluation of process data, and are especially suitable for
medium-sized and large projects where there is a requirement for long-term storage
and flexible, customized evaluation of data. Process values can be displayed in the
form of lists, reports or graphs (trend views). ADP and CC use their own standard
database, which is fully independent of the DESIGO INSIGHT offline database.

22
Log Viewer
The Log Viewer provides a view of the events and user activities archived in
chronological order in the log database. Users thus have access whenever required to
all past events.
Event Handler The data logging system is a background service performed by the Event Handler in
DESIGO INSIGHT V2, which continuously logs reported events as follows:
• Alarm events from the process level such as plant alarms, high priority warnings,
frost alarms etc. The alarm is logged when it occurs, and thereafter upon
acknowledgement, reset and return to normal.
• System events from DESIGO INSIGHT management stations and PX automation
stations. Examples are communication problems, selection procedures, start-up,
shutdown, hard-disk monitoring, battery checks etc.
• User events for reporting user activities on management station. These include
authorized and unauthorized user log-in procedures and the modification of values,
parameters and setpoints etc.
• Status events from the process level, such as plant ON/OFF etc.

The two user interfaces of Log Viewer and Alarm Viewer use tables with the same "look
and feel" and with a versatile range of options for sorting and filtering.

Functions in Log Viewer:

• Query-configurations can be stored and re- • Columns can be flexibly rearranged, re-

Log and trend data archiving

The archiving function serves to remove data from the runtime databases. This is
necessary firstly to create space for new data in cases where storage capacity is normally
limited, and secondly, to store the data in a suitable form for retrieval at a later date. The
removed data is archived in a safe location for later retrieval and display if required.

The criteria for archiving in DESIGO INSIGHT are as follows:

• Automatic archiving at specific time intervals
• Automatic archiving based on the volume of data accumulated
• Manual archiving initiated by a user command

Object Viewer
Object Viewer helps users of the building automation and control system to navigate
efficiently through the entire structure. The hierarchically organized data objects are
easy to select, view and modify.

Object Viewer supports three different hierarchical views:

• Technical View
The technical view is the plant-related standard view associated with the technical
designation.
• User View
The user view is based on customer-specific user designations (user addresses).
The address structure and contents are defined as part of the DESIGO PX
engineering process. The engineering of a user view is relatively time-consuming,
but does make it possible to combine a geographical and a plant-based structure,
which can be useful in larger projects.
• System View
The system view is a standard hierarchical view, representing the topology of the
BACnet network, whereby a site contains devices and each device contains objects
(Site.Device.Object).

System Browser
The left pane of Object Viewer contains the System Browser, which displays a
hierarchically structured view of the system (in a tree-structure). The right pane of
Object Viewer displays the contents of the currently selected object.

24
Functions in Object Viewer:

• Fast navigation through the building • Modification and definition of

automation and control system object-related text
• Fast location of objects and alarms • Find function with wildcarding for quick
• Detailed information on the properties of and direct access to certain objects
each object • Object search in other views by changing
• Display of real-time data from the process. view in context-menu
• Modification of setpoints and parameters, • Read/Write access levels are supported.
and manual override of outputs Users only see objects in locations to which
(assuming that the user has the they have Read access. They can only
necessary Write privileges) modify objects to which they have Write
• Jump functions Back / Forward access
• Object Editor: An exceptionally user-friendly
user interface for editing sophisticated
D-MAP objects

25/48
Web Access
Web Access is an interface to the building, based on a browser and using integrated
Web technology. Web Access can be used for roaming, and for remote access to and
control of important building-related information managed by DESIGO INSIGHT.

Home page

Given the now widespread familiarity with Web browsers, even occasional users can
access the required data quickly. This cost-effective solution reduces the cost of
training, software installation and maintenance. The Web Access software facilitates
and encourages the simple distribution of building information to those who need it, and
at the point where they need it.
Given the modular structure of DESIGO INSIGHT, new and existing DESIGO INSIGHT
systems can be upgraded with Web Access at any time. The principles of Web Access
can be applied in a building network, over the company intranet and on the Internet.
Using technology based on Microsoft Active Server Pages, Web pages work together
with DESIGO INSIGHT to exchange data between the browser and the system. There
are two methods of data exchange:
• Via the Citect interface, for the exchange of dynamic data and for alarm handling
• Via ODBC queries to the SQL databases

Unlike many other Web-based solutions, Web Access does not use any script
components on the client side. All processing takes place on the Web server. This
means that client browsers can work with Web Access without having to download any
browser add-ons. Many customer networks inhibit or even forbid the dowloading of
Active-X or similar scripts.

26
User authentication is achieved by integrating Windows network access and the
authorized DESIGO INSIGHT users. Each time a user accesses the system, the
appropriate DESIGO INSIGHT user access rights are automatically assigned to the
Web pages displayed.
Web Access provides access to the system via a browser. This maintains the familiar
format based on the successful operability guidelines of DESIGO INSIGHT.
• Index Page is the equivalent of the familiar "Home Page". From here, the user can
obtain a quick overall view of the system, or start navigating around the site.
• Graphics-based view of the plant at the automation level, including dynamic
updates of status and alarms, and navigation through the hierarchy. Data points can
be operated and alarms can be manipulated directly in the graphics. The pages can
be generated with the standard graphics in Plant Viewer, so retaining the familiar
DESIGO INSIGHT look and feel. No special Web authoring tools are required.
• Alarms from the DESIGO INSIGHT database are collated in tables. "Sort" and
"Filter" procedures can be predefined or carried out dynamically. Users can process
alarms and receive dynamic feedback from the system.
• Log data logged on the management station can be retrieved via a browser. All
activities in the browser are added, with the relevant user name, to the normal
DESIGO INSIGHT entries in the central log database.
• Reports can be displayed dynamically and used for data point control. The limited
performance of some handheld Web browsers can be overcome by use of reports.
• The User information option provides an overview of the Read and Write privileges
of a logged-in user.

Features of Web Access (via the Web browser):

• Fast access to important user functions • The integration of the DESIGO INSIGHT
• Display and edit plant graphics access rights into the Windows network
• Possibility of immediate display and ensures access security based on
processing of alarms predefined access rights
• Logging in the log database of remote users • Cost-effective distribution of information to
and activities for later evaluation in the an even greater number of users is now

Programming with D-MAP
The D-MAP programming language (= DESIGO Modular Application Programming) for
DESIGO PX ensures efficient programming and parameter setting for building services
plant. The new programming language, D-MAP, based on standard IEC1131, is
optimized for building services. The control strategies required for and best suited to
efficient operation are implemented using graphics-based data flow programming.

Efficient engineering with blocks and compounds

The project-specific HVAC applications are configured, programmed, commissioned
and maintained using the CFC Editor in PX Design. The CFC Editor is a graphics editor
based on block programming and data flow techniques (see also "Commissioning and
engineering with DESIGO TOOLSET").

Creating the CFC chart with the CFC Editor

The characteristic features of D-MAP programming are as follows:

• The elements of D-MAP programming are blocks and "compounds" (compound
functional units). These are stored in libraries.
• To create a D-MAP program, the blocks and compounds which provide the required
functions are combined in the CFC Editor. This process involves creating instances
(of blocks) or copies (of compounds) from the libraries.
• The flow of data between blocks is programmed by interconnecting the "pins"
(inputs and outputs) of various blocks.

Libraries
PX Design incorporates libraries in which the functions, function blocks and compounds
are stored. The libraries contain images of actual plant, aggregates and components in
a structure which can be used equally for design engineering, control, operation and
monitoring and display.

33/48
Made-to-measure operator units
The various operator units in the DESIGO PX range more than satisfy all the various
requirements in terms of location and function.

DESIGO RXC
The DESIGO RXC room automation system provides individual demand-based comfort
for building users in public buildings, offices, schools, hotels, etc.

The DESIGO RXC equipment controls and monitors defined comfort conditions in
rooms and other enclosed spaces. These functions are finely tuned to satisfy specific
requirements in each room or zone. This makes it possible to take account of individual
comfort requirements while simultaneously saving energy.

Easy control of HVAC, lighting and blinds

The modular design of DESIGO RXC makes it possible to combine the operation of
lighting and blinds with the HVAC control system. Using just one operator unit, room
users can adjust all the room functions to suit their requirements.

Stand-alone operation at field level, or integration into the

building automation and control system
The devices in the DESIGO RXC range communicate with each other and with other
LONMARK-compatible devices using a standard protocol (LONMARK over LON bus).
Seamless integration into the DESIGO building automation and control system makes
available the additional functions of building management.

The DESIGO RXC software

Each device is loaded with application software (referred to elsewhere in this section
simply as the "application") which contains the control program for the associated room
or area.
Siemens Building Automation maintains a comprehensive library of applications
covering a wide range of HVAC and electrical applications.

The room controllers

RXC10.1, the controller in a room-style housing:
This controller is a cost-effective combination of a room unit and an HVAC controller.

Compact-series room controllers, RXC20.1, RXC21.1, RXC22.1 and RXC32.1

The input/output configuration and mounting options of these controllers make them
ideal for fan coil applications. The RXC32.1 controller is particularly suitable for
standard single-duct VAV systems. It comes with a built-in volume sensor.

Modular-series room controllers, RXC30/31

The basic units provide flexible control solutions which can be further enhanced with
extension modules (RXC40/41) for lighting and blinds.

37/48
The room unit: the key to individual comfort
The DESIGO RXC range of room units covers the widely differing needs of room
occupants. The designers of these stylish room units also took account of ergonomic
factors.

The HVAC system, lighting and blinds can be operated in various ways:
• In the conventional manner, with standard room units for HVAC and electric switches
to control lighting and blinds

Examples from the QAX3… range ... and the QAX50 range

• The integrated room unit combines the operation of HVAC, lighting and blinds in a
single device. The keypad can be configured with the combination of buttons and
switches best suited to the application.

Applications
A range of predefined, downloadable applications makes DESIGO RXC highly
versatile. The standard applications are available in a library covering various fields of
application such as fan-coil units, radiators, chilled ceilings and integrated applications
incorporating lighting and blinds.

Due to the fact that these applications are largely pre-defined, engineering is reduced
to the definition of a small number of parameters.

Example of integrated applications

The HVAC applications covered by the basic controllers RXC30.1 and RXC31.1 can be
combined with control of lighting and blinds.

System Design (with Project Management and Solution Browser)
System Design includes project management functions such as the setting up and
archiving of projects and the storage and relocation of project data for the
commissioning phase.
System Design is used to structure and specify plant and partial plant. From the library
of pre-programmed and tested solutions, the engineer can use the Solution Browser to
select and configure the solution best suited to customer requirements. System Design
is also used to define the network topology, and to design any room management
solutions and the integration of third-party systems. The number of automation stations
required for the partial plant is calculated automatically. This is followed by the
addressing of the data points.

PX Design
PX Design is the graphics programming and configuration tool for DESIGO PX.
PX Design supports the downloading of the application programs and the
commissioning of the system.

The compounds, which themselves contain function blocks, represent tested solutions,
selected via the Solution Browser. Where objects have been added or removed in
System Design, it may be necessary to use PX Design to modify the compounds
accordingly.

Router Design
Router Design is used to configure the routers in the system.

43/48
Application blocks
The application libraries contain preconfigured and tested programs which can be used
as the basis for individual customer solutions. The HVAC application architecture offers
an overall view of typical heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems with
distributed applications. It is structured in accordance with the "supply chains" (the flow
of energy and media) in building services systems.
The HVAC application architecture comprises application-specific functional units
(software blocks) specifically designed to provide the user with the same "look and
feel":
• in a wide range of different types of building
• for widely differing building services systems
in conjunction with automation systems from different manufacturers

The building services plant is structured as follows:

1 Plant Examples: ventilation system, heating system

2 Partial plant Central supply air treatment, air distribution, hot water
supply (one or more boilers)
3 Aggregates Heating coil, energy recovery system, heating zone (as
part of the hot water distribution circuit)
4 Components Pumps (motors), dampers, valves, sensors, detectors,
limit switches, contactors, selector switches, remote/local
switches

Room-based structures are as follows:
