Learning All Around US

Objective: To review Social Studies, Math, and Science content through authentic problem
solving and reading comprehension.
Standards:
ELACC3RI1: Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring
explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.

ELACC3RI3: Describe the relationship between a series of historical events, scientific
ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text, using language that pertains
to time, sequence, and cause/effect.

MCC.3.OA.8 Solve two-step word problems using the four operations.

S3E1. Students will investigate the physical attributes of rocks and soils.
Explain the difference between a rock and a mineral.
Recognize the physical attributes of rocks and minerals using observation (shape, color,
and texture), measurement, and simple tests (hardness).

SS3H2 The student will discuss the lives of Americans who expanded peoples rights and
freedoms in a democracy

SS3G2 The student will describe the cultural and geographic systems associated with the
historical figures in SS3H2a.


SS3CG1 The student will explain the importance of the basic principles that provide
the foundation of a republican form of government.


Complete the Quest CRCT Review
Overview: The students will be given the following task.
Steve and Stacey went on vacation. They first visited the birth place of Franklin D. Roosevelt.
While they were there they bought t-shirts for their families. Steve has 12 family members.
Stacey has half as many family members as Steve. Together they spent 72 dollars on t-shirts.
Next they went to the U.S. capitol and watched a bill become a law. Before leaving they saw
Staceys father who is Supreme Court Justice. Then they traveled to the birth place of Cesar
Chavez. They visited a rock museum. They were able to test the hardness of minerals, and they
also stopped by a soil exhibit. Finally they arrived home just in time for the Annual Paul Revere
Parade.
Task 1 Socrative The students will use their pone, tablet, or computer to access and answer
the following questions using the take a quiz tool. The students will have 30 minutes to complete
the quiz.
1. In which state did they stop first?
2. How many family members does Stacy have?
3. How much did they spend on each t-shirt?
4. What is the location of their second stop?
5. Which branch of government did they visit first?
6. In which branch of government does Staceys dad work?
7. Which state did they visit after leaving the U.S. capitol?
8. At the museum how did they test the hardness of minerals?
9. What types of soil did they see at the soil exhibit?
10. What is their home state?

Task 2. Google Earth - The students will use Google Earth to explore each state that was part of
the task. They will identify the state flag, bird, and capital. They will use Google presentation to
collaboratively create a presentation with important facts and visuals about one of the states. The
presentation must include at least 6 facts and at least 4 graphics.

Task 3. Rock Cycle Interactive Story The student will work in groups to use the Rock Cycle
app to help design an exhibit that could be added to the Rock Museum. They can do a
presentation, create a sketch, or use any web 2.0 tool of their choice to create a representation of
the exhibit. The students will present their exhibit to the classroom.

Task 4. Audacity The student will work with a partner to complete a reflective interview about
the activities. The students will discussed what they liked and disliked about the activities. They
will discussed any task that were difficult and how the assignment could be improved in the
future and how they can improve in the future on these types of activities.

Accommodations/Modifications Students with special needs and require extra help will be
placed in mixed ability groups to complete their task. Students who require read aloud can listen
the tasks and instructions which are recorded using audacity and saved to the student computers.

Students who do not have their own device can use on of the school provided computers, those
students who are advanced can utilize the media center computer to complete their assignment.

Each student will have access to the classroom Padlet wall and can ask questions interactively
regardless of where they are in the building.
