Underneaththeplanetsofthegalaxylurksanancientevil.Araceasoldastimeitself,
sworntonobodybutthemselves,andfightingalongsidetheforcesofChaosonlywhenitsuits
theirownnefariouspurposes.Theyaregreedybeyondmeasure,andallbuttheirmostprized
warmachinesareexpendableifitmeansagreaterchanceofplunder.TheHrudseethemselves
astherightfulheirstotheempireoftheOldOnes,astheymanagedtosurvivetheancient
conflictwhichannihilatedtheircreators.Onlythemostcunninganddeceitfulofcommanders
canmanagetocontrolthethingsthatgobumpinthenight.

The Hrud Alliance

Eversincemankindfirstventuredintothestars,theirships,colonies,andplanets
havebeenplaguedbyhorrorstoriesofdarkforceslurkingjustbelowtheirfeet.Empty
screamsechothroughthecorridorsofshipsandthedarkalleywaysofhivestacks.
Shadowyfigureslurkinthedarkness,assassinatingpoliticalfigures,stealingsupplies,and
sowingterrorinarmieswithouteverleavingsomuchasfootprints.Suchstoriesmarkthe
firstencountersbetweenMankindandtheHrud.ThemajorityofconflictswiththeHrudstem
fromthefactthattheylivesolelyonworldsinhabitedbyanotherrace.ManyImperialarmies
haveinvadedanalienworldtofindasecondfoewaitingforthemjustbelowtheplanets
surface,wagingaguerillawarinthedeepest,darkestplacesthatevenSpaceMarinesdo
notdaretotread.

TheHrudaremostusuallyconsideredtobeparasites,livingoffoftheresources
providedbyahostworld.Hrudhavebeenfoundinfestingeverypopulationcenter
imaginable,fromHivecitiestoEldarCraftworlds.Miningexpeditionshaveunearthed
massiveundergroundcitiescalledJuunlaaks,oftenbuiltusingthetechnologyand
architectureofthehostrace.AlthoughmostHrudtoolsandweaponsarescavenged,itis
whentheHrudintegratetheirowntechnologyintoaliendesignsthattheirtruewisdomis
revealed.Theyaremastercraftsmen,andHrudbuiltweaponsarehighlyvalueddespite
lookingashorrifyingastheirusers.Thetechnologicalabominationstheycreateoftendefy
thelawsofphysics,makinguseoffrictionlesssurfaces,infinitesourcesofenergy,and
eventhepowersoftheWarpitself.Examinationsofhybridweaponshasrevealedthatthe
Hrudpossesslittletonoknowledgeoftheforeigndevicestheyareworkingwith,buthave
cometotheconclusionthatintegratingtheirowntechnologywithitwillmakeitbetter,orat
leastbringittoauniformlevelofmediocrity.

ItisdifficulttosayiftheHrudareevenallthesamespecies.Manytheoriesabout

theirnatureexist,allofwhichcontradictoneanother.TheOrdoXenoshasidentified
countlessdifferentcreatureswhichseemtomakeuptheknownHrudinfestations.These
havebeenorganizedintothreecategories:theSkaven,Multus,andHrudThings.Together,
theyareknownastheHrudAlliance.Littleisknownaboutthehistoryoftheseraces,or
evenwhytheyareworkingtogetherinthefirstplace.Theonlycommonfeaturesamong
themaretheirsharedhabitatsandtechnology,butthedifficultyofstudyingthemmakes
furtherresearchintotheirsocietyimpossible.

Intermsofphysicalappearance,mostHrudaredescribedasbeinghumanoids,
withtheexceptionoftheshapeshiftingHrudThings.ItisnotuncommonforaRogue
TradertodescribeencounterswithMultuspirates,butthevariouscloakingtechnologies
usedbytheHrudmakeidentifyingspecificfeaturesdifficult.Sometimestheirappearance
willevendifferfrompersontoperson.HrudareoccasionallycapturedbyImperialforces,
buttheriddlestheyspeaktotheircaptorsoftendrivethemmad.ThisbuystheHrudenough
timetocompletetheirfinaldutytotheAlliance,wheretheydissolveintoapileofrotten
mushtopreventanyonefromlearningtheirsecrets.

History of the Hrud

MostoftheImperiumsknowledgeaboutHrudhistorycomesfromreligioustexts
foundintheruinsoftheirundergroundsettlements.Itisunknownwhenexactlytheycame
intoexistence,butintheirmythologyitisbelievedthattheywerecreatedontheir
siliconrichhomeworldofHrudbytheSlahhaii,whichroughlytranslatestomostancient.
Astheaeonspassed,agroupofstarsneartheHrudsdomainbecametheheartofthe
Eldarcivilization,whoseemtotoleratethesecreaturesonlybecauseofthiscommon
origin.TheHrudeventuallydevelopedthegiftofsentience,andconstructedtheirfirstcities
atroughlythesametimetheEldardiscoveredtheWebway.

TheancientHrudcoloniesweresimpleinnature,andappeartohavebeennothing
morethanholesintheground.TheEldarreportthatalloftheHrudsearlytechnologywas
stolenfromthem.TheracewascomprisedentirelyofcreaturesresemblingtheSkaven,
whoconstructedthefirstspacecraftandlaunchedthemfrommountaintopsacrossthe
stars.Theyspreadoutacrossthegalaxybeforemanhadevendiscoveredfire,andarenot
mentionedintheancienthistoryofanyotherrace.ItwasaroundthistimethattheHrud
pantheonisfirstmentioned.ARangernamedQtanthePathfinderappearsfirstintheir
mythology.NextcamecalledQaltheWise,whooftenisshownwithastrangeexpression
onhisface,almostlookingasifhewasimitatinglaughter.QahtheCraftsman,thegodof
artisans,appearsinHrudtextsataboutthetimetheFusilwasinvented.Afourthindividual,
whoappearsintheformofaHrudwarlordcladinredarmour,ismentionedbrieflybutis

nevernamed.OneescapedHrudslavewhowasrescuedbytheInquisitionreportedthat
theHrudbelievetheirgodstohavebeenactualphysicalentities.Thisissurely
propaganda,buttheunparalleledcollectivememoryoftheHruddoesprovidesome
legitimacytotheclaim.

TheHrudexistedpeacefullyintheirdesolatekingdomuntilatimeestimatedtobe
sixtymillionyearsago,whentheHrudgodsareshownbeingattackedbycreaturescalled
theYaamkhek,ormirrordevils.TheHrudseemtohaveattemptedtofightthesebeings
alongsidetheSlahhaii,butweredefeatedateveryturn.Itappearstohavereachedapoint
whereQahwastheonlygodleftalive,alongwithbutahandfulofcoloniesofHrud.Fearing
extinction,QahorderedtheentireHrudracetomoveunderground.Thisseemstobethe
reasontheHrudgivefortheirsubterraneanlifestyle,andalsowhytheyareabletoresist
eventhedeepestofplanetarybombardments.ThelastimageofQahshowshimenteringa
portalbelievedtoberepresentingtheWarp.

Whenthegreatwarfinallycametoanend,theHrudcreptoutoftheircavestofind
notraceoftheSlahhaiiortheYaamkhek.Thisisoneofthefewsubjectsthatcaptured
Hrudhavespokenabout,asitwaswhentheentireracevowedtolearnalltheycouldabout
theuniverse,withthehopeofonedayrebuildingthegreatnessthatwastakenfromthem.
Forcountlessmillennia,theylurkedintheshadowsofthegalaxy,gainingknowledgeand
perfectingtheirtechnology.Thefinalchapteroftheirraceshistorybeganwithagreat
cataclysm,identifiedastheeventwhichformedSlaanesh.TheheartoftheHrudAlliance
wasengulfedintheEyeofTerror,leadingmanyHrudtobelievetheirgreatempiretobe
lost.Inacollectionofmysteriousimages,thepowersoftheWarpappeartoturnthe
Skavenintogrotesqueandfearsomecreatures,withsomeappearingsimilartothe
bendiesreportedbyImperialshipcrews.TheSkavenareknowntohavepossessedthe
psykergenepriortothispoint,butitisunknownwhatbecameoftheirpsychicindividuals
oncetheywereswallowedbytheWarp.

DuringtheGreatCrusade,anExploratormissionmadecontactwiththeHrudforthe
firsttimeonthebarrenworldofGugann.TheEldarhadwarnedtheImperiumtoavoidthat
regionofspace,butthesewarningswerenaturallydismissedasEldartrickery.The
Exploratormissionwasneverheardfromagain,andanexpeditionofSpaceMarinesfrom
theIronWarriorsLegionwassenttoinvestigate.Theylaunchedaxenocidalwaragainst
theHrudonGugann,wipingouttheinfestationthere.TheHrudwereutterlyannihilatedon
thatworld,buttheircollectivememorycouldindicatethattheirfateiswellknownbytherest
oftheAlliance.InthefinalyearsoftheGreatCrusade,thefirstgreatHrudmigration
emergedfromtheWarp,andheadedstraightforthedomainoftheIronWarriorsLegion.
TheVulpaStraitsmigrationdecimatedtheImperialworldsofKrakFiorinaand

Stratopolae,andonlycametoanendwhentheymettheIronWarriorsinfullforceonthe
fortressworldofGholgis.TheAdeptusAstartesclashedwithwarpspawnedhorrorsall
acrossthatworldsblastedsurface,withthewarappearingtohavenoend.

ThesituationquicklychangedwhenWarmasterHorusvirusbombedthenearby
planetofIstvaanIII,andtheIronWarriorswerewithdrawnintheirentiretyfromGholgistodo
battlewiththeLoyalistLegions.Whilemankindwasbusyfightingeachother,littleaction
wastakenagainsttheHrud,givingthenewHrudAlliancetimetotakerootinthedark
cornersofthegalaxy.Sincethattime,theHrudhaveterrorizedthesentientracesofthe
MilkyWayateveryoccasion,spreadingtheirvileessencethroughouteveryplacethey
touch.Itissuggestedthattheydonotexperiencetimeinthesamewayasotherraces,as
theircollectivememoryseemstoextendbeyondthepresenttime.ManyInquisitorsreport
thattheHruddonotbelievetheImperiumexists,astheyclaimitcrumbledmillenniaago.
Duringoneinterrogation,twoInquisitorsdaredtoaskacapturedHrudofthefateofthe
Imperium.Thetranscriptoftheinterrogationimmediatelycutsoffafterthat.Thetwowere
laterfoundattemptingtokilloneanotherinthehallwayoutsidetheinterrogationchamber,
babblingaboutendlessflamesandswarmsoflocusts.

TheSkavenaretheoldest
andmostnumerousmembersof
theHrudAlliance.Theyappear
identicaltotheverminfoundon
manyhumanworlds,butresearch
bytheImperiumhasyettoconfirm
anyrelationship.Theyhavethe
mostsolidpresenceinthe
materialworldofanyHrud,andas
aresulttheymakeupthemajority
ofHrudwarriors.Althoughtheyare
physicallycapableofwearing
clothing,theyinsteadpreferto
drapethemselvesinacloakmade
outofvariousstolenpiecesof
cloth,orcovertheirbodieswith
armourmadefromscrapmetal.
Theywillusuallyhavesomesortof
colouredpatchattachedtotheir
clothing,andthesymbolsonthesepatchesapparentlydenotetribeorrankinacolonyof
Skaven.

TheSkavencancontorttheirbodiesintoimpossiblepositions,onlysurpassedin
acrobaticskillbytheMultus.ShipcrewsthathavesurvivedHrudraidsgivereportsofSkaven
psykersphasingpartwayintotheWarptoslipthroughbulkheadswithgreaterease.Inbattle,
theyareunbelievablyagile,andiftheycannotslaytheirfoewithaswiftthrustoftheirspear,they
willwaitfortheopponenttoattackbeforecounteringinamatterofmilliseconds.Thereason
thesecreaturesdonotutterlyannihilatetheirfoesisbecausetheyarecowardlybynature,and
wouldratherhideinadampcavethanbesiegeacity.WhenledbyaMultusorHrudThing,
however,theybecomealmostpossessedwithbloodlust,andwillattackanythingthatmoves,
fromapatrolofImperialGuardsmentoachargingmobofOrks.Inrecenthistory,itisbelieved
thatHiveFleetLeviathanhasenteredaregionofspaceinhabitedbySkaven,butitisunknown
whatbattleshavetakenplacebetweenthem,andsomemembersoftheOrdoXenoswould
prefertoleaveitthatway.

Multus:

TheMultusarethemosthideous
membersoftheHrudrace,havingbeen
horriblymutatedwhentheEyeofTerror
engulfedtheHrudsancestralworlds.
Theyareastallasaman,andare
humanoidinnature.Theirfourlimbsare
allthesamelength,andsegmentedlike
aspine.Manyobserversmistakethem
forquadrupeds,astheyprefertowear
longrobeswhichcompletelycovertheir
sicklygreenbodies.Theirphysical
distinctionhasearnedthemthe
nicknamebendiesbyImperialship
crews.TheMultusandHrudThingsemit
thestrangeSsaak,anentropyfieldwhich
distortstheairaroundthem,actingasa
crudecloakingdevice.However,
experimentsbytheOrdoXenoshave
shownthatitdoesnotfunctionlikeany
knowncamouflage,andappearsasifit
actuallydestroyslightparticlesthatattempttopassthroughit.TheSsaakhasalsobeenfound
tospeeduptheaginganddecayoflivingmatter,anditishypothesizedthatthosewhocan
controlthispowercouldeveninfusetheairwithvariouschemicalstofurtherenhancethis
process.HumanswholiveincloseproximitytoMultuswilladapttothesepoisons,andeven
developadependencytothem.Saidhumanswillexperienceseverewithdrawalsymptomsif
theyaredeprived,allowingtheMultustoexerttotalcontrolovertheirhumanslaves.

DespitetheirclosenesstotheWarp,theMultususuallyserveasthediplomatsand
tradersoftheHrudcolonies,asinterrogationofMultusprisonershaveshowntheirmaininterests
tobestudyingtechnologicaladvancementsandamassingmaterialwealth.Themostcommon
religionamongtheMultusisacultdedicatedtoQah,whowasidentifiedinancienttextsasthe
godofartisans.TheMultusseemtopossessanaeonsoldhatredofSlaanesh,butopen
worshipofotherRuinousPowersisquitecommonintheirsociety.

HrudThing:

TheHrudThingsaretheleast
numerousmembersoftheHrud
Alliance,butarebyfarthemost
powerful.TheywereoriginallySkaven
psykers,whochosetoremain
underneaththeEldarworldswhile
theirbrethrenspreadthroughoutthe
galaxy.Whentheseworldswere
engulfedbytheEyeofTerror,most
Skavenwerespareddestructiondue
totheirlackofapresenceinthe
Warp.However,thepsykergenewas
knowntobecommonamongthe
Skaven,soitishypothesizedthat
theseindividualsbecamethe
HrudThings.TheirSsaakwas
magnifiedtentimesoverduringthis
transformation,andcannowreduce
entirespaceshipstorustandrot.Duringthe1stBattleofCadia,itisbelievedthatasmanyasa
millionHrudThingsescapedtheEyewhilemankindwasdistractedwithitsowntitanicstruggle.

TheHrudThingshavebeengiventheirnamebecausealthoughtheycommonlyappear
intheshapeofanotherHrud,theirtrueformisstillunknown.Whenhumanityhasencountered
thesecreatures,thedefendersreportthatitwasasiftheywereattackedbydeathitself.Great
massesofgreenslimeemergefromgarbagedumpsandsewers,engulfingeverythingtheysee,
thendisappearingintothedarknessonceImperialforcesarrive.TheappearanceofaHrudThing
differsfrompersontoperson,withtheonlycommondescriptorbeingthatitwassomethingout
oftheirverynightmares.FollowingtheBattleofGholgis,theOrdoXenosattemptedtoanalyzea
DNAsampleofaHrudThingslaininthatconflict,resultingintheinsanityofallinvolved.

butalsothefactthattheHrudareinnatecraftsmen.Itusesacrudeexplosivechargetopropela
metalslugoutofitsbarrel,aconceptthattheImperialTechpriestsfindcomicallysimple.

Adesignasoldastimeitself,themightyFusilhasbeenusedbytheHrudAllianceformillionsof
years.ThesemysteriousdevicesusethepoweroftheWarptocondenseabulletofwhitehot
plasmainsideafiringchamber,beforepropellingitthroughtheImmateriumasitleavesthe
barrel.Anyfoeunfortunateenoughtobecaughtinthisroundspathdoesnothingmorethan
delaytheprojectileforafewnanoseconds,astheroundmaterializesinsidetheirdefencesand
theyareimmolatedinablastofwarpfire.Thismethodofpropulsionishighlyunpredictable,

However,thecomponentsofthesegunsaremuchmoreefficientandcompact,andnoneofthe
weaponspowerhasbeenlostbyitschangeinsize.Theonlyissue,however,isthatitisjustas
unreliable,somanypowerfulHrudprefernottoruntheriskoffiringitinbattle.

Throughaeonsofcombatexperience,theHrudhavecometotheconclusionthattheirFusilsfar

hisstrengthinordertofleeintotheWarp.Therehelivedformillionsofyears,untilSlaaneshwas
bornandengulfedtheheartoftheEldarEmpire.ThenewChaosgodinstantlydespisedQah,as
alifefullofworkleftnotimeforlustorpleasure.SlaaneshtoreQahintomillionsofpieces,and
castthemintorealitytolingerforever.Daemonicessencethencametomergewithwhat
remainedofQah,creatingtheracethatwenowknowastheUmbra.Theyfightsilentlyand
withoutremorse,feedingoffoftheenergyofwarpstormsinthedarkestcornersofthegalaxy.
