cardinaldeaconofSt.Angel,declarethroughthisofficialstatementdirectedtoallwhowillreadit
thatsinceourmostholyfatherandlordClement,bydivineprovidencethesupremepontificofthe
holyRomananduniversalchurch,afterreceivingthewordofmouthandalsoclamorousreports
fromtheillustriouskingofFranceandprelates,dukes,counts,baronsandothersubjectsofthe
saidkingdom,bothnoblemenandcommoners,alongwithsomebrothers,presbyters,knights,
preceptorsandservantsoftheTemplarorder,hadinitiatedaninquiryintomattersconcerningthe
brothers,[questionsofCatholicfaith]andtheRuleofthesaidOrder,becauseofwhichitsuffered
publicinfamy,theverysamelordPopewishingandintendingtoknowthepure,completeand
uncompromisedtruthfromtheleadersofthesaidOrder,namelybrotherJacquesdeMolay,
grandmasteroftheOrderofKnightsTempar,brotherRaymbauddeCaron,preceptorthe
commandariesofTemplarKnightsinOutremer,brotherHugodePrraud,preceptorofFrance,
brotherGeoffroydeGonneville,preceptorofAquitaniaandPoitou,andGeoffroyofCharny,
preceptorofNormandy,orderedandcommissionedusspecificallyandbyhisverballyexpressed
willinorderthatwemightwithdiligenceexaminethetruthbyquestioningthegrandmasterand
theaforementionedpreceptorsonebyoneandindividually,havingsummonednotariespublic
andtrustworthywitnesses.

AndhavingactedaccordingtothemandateandcommissionedbythesaidLordSupremePontific,
wequestionedtheaforementionedgrandmasterandthepreceptorsandexaminedthem
concerningthemattersdescribedabove.Theirwordsandconfessionswerewrittendownexactly
thewaytheyareincludedherebythenotarieswhosenamesarelistedbelowinthepresenceof
witnesseslistedbelow.Wealsoorderedthesethingsdrawnupinthisofficialformandvalidated
bytheprotectionofourseals.

IntheyearofourLord1308,the6thindiction,onthe17thdayofAugust,inthe3dyearofthe
pontificateofthesaidPopeClementV,brotherRaymbauddeCaron,preceptorthecommandaries
ofTemplarKnightsinOutremer,wasbroughtinfrontofus,theaforementionedfathers,tothe
townofChinonoftheToursdiocese.WithhishandontheHolyGospeloftheLordhetookanoath
thathewouldspeakpureandcompletetruthabouthimselfaswellindividualsandbrothersofthe
Order,andabouttheOrderitself,concerningquestionsofCatholicfaithandtheRuleofthesaid
Order,andalsoaboutfiveparticularindividualsandbrothersoftheOrder.Diligentlyinterrogated
byusaboutthetimeandcircumstancesofhisinitiationintheorderhesaidthatitwasbeenforty
theeyearsorthereaboutssincehehadbeenknightedandadmittedintotheTemplarOrderby
brotherRoncelindeFos,atthetimepreceptorofProvence,inthetownofRicharenchess,inthe
dioceseofCarpentrasorSaintPaulTroisChteaux,inthechapelofthelocalTemplar
commandery.Duringtheceremonythepatronsaidnothingtothenovicethatwasnotproper,but
aftertheadmittanceaservantbrothercameuptohimwhosenamehedoesnotrecall,forhehas
beendeadforalongtime.Hetookhimasideholdingasmallcrossunderhiscloak,andwhenall
thebrothersexitedandtheyremainedalone,thatisthisbrotherservantandthespeaker,this
brotherservantshowedthiscrosstothespeakerwhodoesnotrecallwhetheritboretheeffigyof
thecrucifixornot,butbelieveshowever,thattherewasacrucifixeitherpaintedorcarved.And
thisbrotherservanttoldthespeaker:Youmustdenouncethisone.Andthespeaker,not
believinghimselftobecommittingasin,said:Andso,Idenounce.Thatbrotherservantalsotold
thespeakerthatheshouldpreservepurityandchastity,butifhecouldnotdoso,itwasbetterto
bedonesecretlythanpublicly.Thespeakeralsosaidthathisdenunciationdidnotcomefromthe
heart,butfromthemouth.Thenhesaidthatthenextdayherevealedthistothebishopof
Carpentras,hisbloodrelative,whowaspresentinthesaidplace,andthebishoptoldhimthathe
hadactedwronglyandcommittedasin.Thentheinterrogatedconfessedonthisaccounttothe
samebishopandwasassignedpenanceswithhecompleted,accordingtohim.

Whenaskedaboutthesinofsodomy,hesaidthatheneverwasapartofitneitherperformingor
enduring,andthatheneverheardthatknightsTemplarengagedinthissin,apartfromthosethree
knightswhohadbeenpunishedbyperpetualincarcerationinCastlePilgrim.Whenaskedwhether
thebrothersofthesaidOrderwerereceivedintotheorderinthesamemannerhewasreceived
intoit,herepliedthathedidnotknowthat,becauseheneverinitiatedanyonehimselfanddidnot
seeanyonebeingacceptedintheOrderotherthantwoorthreebrothers.Regardingthemhedid
notknowwhethertheydenouncedChristornot.Whenhewasaskedaboutthenamesofthese
brothershesaidthatonehadthenameofPeter,butthathedidnotrememberhisfamilyname.
WhenhewasaskedhowoldhewaswhenhewasmadebrotherofthesaidOrderherepliedthat
hewasseventeenyearsofageorthereabouts.Whenhewasaskedaboutthespittingonthecross
andabouttheworshippedhead,hesaidthatheknewnothing,addingthathehadneverheard
anymentionofthatheaduntilheheardthelordPopeClementspeakofitthispastyear.Whenhe
wasaskedaboutthepracticeofkissing,herepliedthattheaforementionedbrotherRoncelin
kissedhimonthemouthwhenhereceivedhimasabrother;hesaidthatheknewnothingabout
otherkisses.Whenhewasaskedwhetherhewantedtomaintainwhathehadsaidduringthe
confession,whetheritwasdoneaccordingtothetruth,andwhetherhehadaddedanything
untruthfulorwithheldanythingthatistruthful,herepliedthathewantedtomaintainwhathe
hadpreviouslysaidinhisconfession,thatitwastruthfulandthatheneitheraddedanythingthat
wasuntruthfulnoromittedanythingthatwastruthful.Whenhewasaskedwhetherhehad
confessedduetoarequest,reward,gratitude,favor,fear,hatredorpersuasionbysomeoneelse,
ortheuseofforce,orfearofimpendingtorture,herepliedthathedidnot.

Afterwards,thisverybrotherRaymbaudstandingonhiskneeswithhishandsfoldedaskedforour
forgivenessandmercyregardingtheabovementioneddeeds.Andashepleadedso,brother
Raymbauddenouncedinourpresencetheabovementionedheresy,aswellasanyotherheresy.
ForthesecondtimehetookanoathwithhishandupontheHolyGospelofourLordinthathewill
obeytheteachingsoftheChurch,thathewillmaintain,upholdandobservetheCatholicfaith
whichtheRomanChurchmaintains,upholdsandproclaims,aswellasteachesandrequiresof
otherstoobserveit,andthathewillliveanddieasafaithfulChristian.Afterthisoath,bythe
authorityoflordPopespecificallygrantedtousforthatpurpose,weextendedtothishumbly
askingbrotherRaymbaud,inaformacceptedbytheChurchthemercyofabsolutionfromthe
verdictofexcommunicationthathadbeenincurredbytheaforementioneddeeds,restoringhim
tounitywiththeChurchandreinstatinghimforcommunionofthefaithfulandsacramentsofthe
Church.

Also,onthesameday,brotherknightGeoffroyofCharny,preceptorofcommanderiesofthe
TemplarOrderinNormandy,appearingpersonallyinthepreviouslydescribedmannerandform,
inourpresence,andinthepresenceofnotaries,aswellaswitnesses,modestlysworewithhis
handontheGospeloftheLordandwasquestionedaboutthemannerofhisreceptionintothe
saidOrder.Hetestifiedthatithaswellbeenfortyyearsorthereaboutssincehewasacceptedinto
theOrderofKnightsTemplarbybrotherAmaurydelaRoche,thepreceptorofFranceintampsof
thedioceseofSens,inthechapelofthelocalTemplarcommandery.Presentattheceremony
werebrotherJeanleFranceys,preceptorofPdenac,andnine,tenorsobrothersofthesaid
Orderwhomheallbelievedtobedeadnow.Andthen,oncehehadbeenacceptedintheorder
andthecloakoftheorderhadbeenplacedonhisshoulders,thebrotherwhoperformedthe
ceremonytookhimasidewithinthesamechapelandshowedhimacrucifixwithaneffigyof
Christ,andtoldhimthatheshouldnotbelieveintheCrucified,butshouldinfactdenounceHim.
ThenthenewlyacceptedbrotheratthedemandofthesaidrecipientdenouncedHimverbally,but
notinhisheart.Also,hesaidthatatthetimeofhisinduction,thenovicekissedtherecipienton
themouthandinhischestthroughthegarmentasasignofreverence.

WhenaskedwhetherbrothersoftheTemplarOrderwhilebeinginitiatedintotheorderwere
acceptedinthesamemannerthathewas,hesaidthathedidnotknow.Healsosaidthathe
himselfreceivedonebrotherintothesaidOrderthroughthesameceremonythroughwhichhe
himselfwasaccepted.Afterwardsheacceptedmanyotherswithoutthedenunciationdescribed
earlierandingoodmanner.Healsosaidthatheconfessedaboutthedenunciationofthecross
whichhehaddoneduringtheceremonyofinductionandaboutbeingforcedtodosobythe
brotherperformingtheceremony,tothePatriarchofJerusalemofthetime,andwasabsolvedby
him.

Whendiligentlyquestionedregardingthespittingonthecross,thepracticeofkissing,theviceof
sodomyandtheworshippedhead,herepliedthatheknewnothingofit.Furtherinterrogated,he
saidthathebelievedthatotherbrothershadbeenacceptedintotheOrderinthesamemanner
thathewas.Hesaidhoweverthathedidnotknowthatforsuresincewhenthesethingstook
placethenewlyreceivedweretakenasidesothatotherbrotherswhowerepresentinthebuilding
wouldneitherseenorhearwhatwentonwiththem.Askedabouttheagethathewasinwhen
acceptedintothesaidOrder,herepliedthathewassixteen,seventeenorthereabouts.

Whenhewasaskedwhetherhehadsaidthesethingsduetoarequest,reward,gratitude,favor,
fear,hatredorpersuasionbysomeoneelse,ortheuseofforce,orfearofimpendingtorture,he
repliedthathedidnot.Whenhewasaskedwhetherhewantedtomaintainwhathehadsaid
duringtheconfession,whetheritwasdoneaccordingtothetruth,andwhetherhehadadded
anythinguntruthfulorwithheldanythingthatistruthful,herepliedthathewantedtomaintain
whathehadpreviouslysaidinhisconfessionduringwhichhehadonlysaidwhatwastrue,that
whathesaidwasaccordingtothetruthandthatheneitheraddedanythingthatwasuntruthful
noromittedanythingthatwastruthful.

Afterthis,weconcludedtoextendthemercyofabsolutionfortheseactstobrotherGeoffroy,who
intheformandmannerdescribedabovehaddenouncedinourpresencethedescribedandany
otherheresy,andsworeinpersonontheLordsHolyGospel,andhumblyaskedforthemercyof
absolution,restoringhimtounitywiththeChurchandreinstatinghimforcommunionofthe
faithfulandsacramentsoftheChurch.

Onthesameday,inourpresenceandthepresenceofnotaries,aswellasthewitnesseslisted
below,brotherGeoffroydeGonnevillepersonallyappearedandwasdiligentlyquestionedabout
thetimeandcircumstancesofhisreceptionandaboutothermattersdescribedabove.Hereplied
thatithasbeentwentyeightyearsorthereaboutssincehewasreceivedasabrotheroftheOrder
oftheKnightsTemplarbybrotherknightRobertdeTorville,preceptorofthecommandariesofthe
TemplarorderinEngland,inthecityofLondon,atthechapelofthelocalcommandery.Andthis
receptor,afterbestowingthecloakoftheKnightsTemplaruponthethisnewlyreceivedmember,
showedhimthecrossdepictedinsomebookandsaidthatheshoulddenouncetheonewhose
imagewasdepictedonthatcross.Whenthenewlyreceiveddidnotwanttodoso,thereceptor
toldhimmultipletimesthatheshoulddoso.Andsincehecompletelyrefusedtodoit,the
receptor,seeinghisresistance,saidtohim:Willyousweartomethatifaskedbyanyofthe
brothersyouwouldsaythatyouhadmadethisdenouncement,providedthatIallowyounotto
makeit?Andthenewlyreceivedansweredyes,andpromisedthatifhewasquestionedbyany
ofthebrotherofthesaidOrderhewouldsaythathehadperformedthesaiddenouncement.And,
ashesaid,hemadenodenouncementotherwise.Healsosaidthatthesaidreceptortoldhimthat
sheshouldspitonthedescribedcross.Whenthenewlyreceiveddidnotwishtodoso,the
receptorplacedhisownhandoverthedepictionofthecrossandsaid:Atleastspitonmyhand!
Andsincethereceivedfearedthatthereceptorwouldremovehishandandsomeofthisspit
wouldgetonthecross,hedidnotwanttospitonthehandwiththecrossbeingnear.

Whendiligentlyquestionedregardingthesinofsodomy,theworshippedhead,aboutthepractice
ofkissingandotherthingsforwhichthebrothersofthesaidorderreceivedabadreputation,he
saidthatheknewnothing.WhenaskedwhetherotherbrothersoftheOrderwereacceptedinto
theOrderinthesamewayashewas,hesaidthathebelievedthatthesamewasdonetoothersas
itwasdonetohimatthetimeofhisdescribedinitiation.

Whenhewasaskedwhetherhehadsaidthesethingsduetoarequest,reward,gratitude,favor,
fear,hatredorpersuasionbysomeoneelse,ortheuseofforce,orfearofimpendingtorture,he
repliedthathedidnot.Afterthis,weconcludedtoextendthemercyofabsolutionfortheseacts
tobrotherGeoffroydeGoneville,whointheformandmannerdescribedabovehaddenouncedin
ourpresencethedescribedandanyotherheresy,andsworeinpersonontheLordsHolyGospel,
andhumblyaskedforthemercyofabsolution,restoringhimtounitywiththeChurchand
reinstatinghimforcommunionofthefaithfulandsacramentsoftheChurch.

Thenonthenineteenthdayofthemonth,inourpresence,andinthepresenceofnotariesandthe
samewitnesses,brotherHugodePrraud,preceptorofTemplarcommanderiesinFrance
appearedpersonallyandtookanoathontheHolyGospeloftheLord,placinghishanduponitin
themannerdescribedabove.ThisbrotherHugo,havingswornasindicated,andbeingdiligently
questionedsaidaboutthemannerofhisinitiationthathewasreceivedinLondonatlocalTemplar
commandary,initschurch.ItwasfortysixyearsagothispastfeastofSt.Magdalene.Hewas
inductedasabrotheroftheOrderbybrotherHubetdePerraud,hisownfather,aVisitatorofthe
TemplarcommanderiesinFranceandPoitou,whoplaceduponhisshouldersthecloakofthesaid
Order.Thishavingbeendone,somebrotherofthesaidOrder,bythenameofJohn,who
afterwardsbecamepreceptorofdeLaMuce,tookhimtoacertainpartofthatchapel,showed
himacrosswithaneffigyofChrist,andorderedhimtodenouncetheOnewhoseimagewas
depictedthere.Herefused,asmuchashecould,accordingtohim.Eventually,however,overcome
byfearandmenacesofbrotherJohn,hedenouncedtheOnewhoseimagewasdepictedthere
onlyonce.AndalthoughbrotherJohnmultipletimesdemandedthathespitonthatcross,he
refusedtodoso.

Whenaskedwhetherhehadtokissthereceptor,hesaidthathedid,onlyonthemouth.

Whenaskedaboutthesinofsodomy,herepliedthatitwasneverimposedonhimandhenever
committedit.

WhenaskedwhetherheacceptedothersintotheOrder,herepliedthathedidmanytimes,and
thatheacceptedmorepeoplethananyotherlivingmemberoftheOrder.

Whenaskedabouttheceremonythroughwhichheacceptedthem,hesaidthataftertheywere
receivedandgiventhecloaksoftheOrder,heorderedthemtodenouncethecrucifixandtokiss
himatthebottomoftheback,inthenavelandthenonthemouth.Healsosaidthatheimposed
onthemtoabstainfrompartnershipwithwomen,and,iftheywereunabletorestraintheirlust,
tojointhemselveswithbrothersoftheOrder.

Healsosaidunderoaththattheaforementioneddenunciation,whichheperformedduring
initiation,aswellasotherthingsdescribedthathedemandedfromthosereceivedbyhim,was
doneinwordonly,andnotinspirit.Whenaskedwhyhefeltpainedanddidnotperforminspirit
thethingsthathedid,herepliedthatsuchwerethestatutesorrathertraditionsoftheOrderand
thathealwayshopedthatthiserrorwouldberemovedfromthesaidOrder.

Whenaskedwhetheranyofthemembersnewlyreceivedbyhimrefusedtoperformthe
describedspittingandotherdishonestthingslistedabove,herepliedthatonlyfew,andeventually
alldidasordered.Healsosaidthatalthoughhehimselfinstructedbrothersoftheorderwhomhe
initiatedtojoinwithotherbrothers,neverthelessheneverdidthat,norheardthatanyoneelse
committhissin,exceptforthetwoorthreebrothersinOutremerwhowereincarceratedforthis
inCastlePilgrim.

WhenaskedwhetherheknewifallbrothersofthesaidOrderwereinitiatedinthesamemanner
asheinitiatedothers,hesaidthathedidnotknowforsureaboutothers,onlyabouthimselfand
thosewhomheinitiated,becausebrothersareinitiatedinsuchsecrecythatnothingcanbeknown
otherthanthroughthosewhoarepresent.Whenaskedwhetherhebelievedthattheywereall
initiatedinthismanner,hesaidthathebelievedthatthesameritualisusedwhileinitiatingothers
asitwasusedinhiscaseandashehimselfadministeredwhenhereceivedothers.

WhenaskedabouttheheadofanidolthatwasreportedlyworshipedbytheTemplars,hesaid
thatitwasshowntohiminMontpellierbybrotherPeterAlemandin,preceptorofthatplace,and
thatthisheadremainedinpossessionofbrotherPeter.

WhenaskedhowoldhewaswhenacceptedintothesaidOrder,herepliedthatheheardhis
mothersaythathewaseighteen.Healsosaidthatpreviouslyhehadconfessedaboutthesethings
inthepresenceofbrotherGuillaumeofParis,inquisitorofhereticalactions,orhisdeputy.This
confessionwaswrittendowninthehandoftheundersigningAmisedOrleansandsomeother
notariespublic.Hewishestomaintainthatconfession,justasitis,aswellasmaintaininthe
presentconfessionthatwhichisinconcordwiththepreviousone.Andifthereisanything
additionalinthisconfessioninfrontoftheInquisitororhisdeputy,ashasbeensaidabove,he
ratifies,approvesandconfirmsit.

Whenhewasaskedwhetherhehadconfessedtothesethingsduetoarequest,reward,gratitude,
favor,fear,hatredorpersuasionbysomeoneelse,ortheuseofforce,orfearofimpending
torture,herepliedthathedidnot.Whenhewasaskedwhetherhe,afterbeingapprehended,was
submittedtoanyquestioningortorture,herepliedthathedidnot.

Afterthis,weconcludedtoextendthemercyofabsolutionfortheseactstobrotherHugo,whoin
theformandmannerdescribedabovehaddenouncedinourpresencethedescribedandany
otherheresy,andsworeinpersonontheLordsHolyGospel,andhumblyaskedforthemercyof
absolution,restoringhimtounitywiththeChurchandreinstatinghimtocommunionofthe
faithfulandsacramentsoftheChurch.

Thenonthetwentiethdayofthemonth,inourpresence,andinthepresenceofnotariesandthe
samewitnesses,brotherknightJacquesdeMolay,grandmasteroftheOrderofKnightsTemplar
appearedpersonallyandhavingswornintheformandmannerindicatedabove,andhavingbeen
diligentlyquestioned,saidithasbeenfortytwoyearsorthereaboutssincehewasreceivedasa
brotherofthesaidOrderbybrotherknightHubertdePrraud,atthetimeVisitatorofFranceand
Poitou,inBeune,dioceseofAutun,inthechapelofthelocalTemplarcommanderyofthatplace.

ConcerningthewayofhisinitiationintotheOrder,hesaidthathavinggivenhimthecloakthe
receptorshowedtohim<thecross>andtoldhimthatheshoulddenouncetheGodwhoseimage
wasdepictedonthatcross,andthatheshouldspitonthecross.Whichhedid,althoughhedidnot
spitonthecross,bynearit,accordingtohiswords.Healsosaidthatperformedthisdenunciation
inwords,notinspirit.Regardingthesinofsodomy,theworshippedheadandthepracticeofillicit
kisses,he,diligentlyquestioned,saidthatheknewnothingofthat.

Whenhewasaskedwhetherhehadconfessedtothesethingsduetoarequest,reward,gratitude,
favor,fear,hatredorpersuasionbysomeoneelse,ortheuseofforce,orfearofimpending
torture,herepliedthathedidnot.Whenhewasaskedwhetherhe,afterbeingapprehended,was

Onthesametwentiethdayofthemonth,inourpresence,andinthepresenceofnotariesandthe
samewitnesses,brotherGeoffroydeGonnevillefreelyandwillinglyratified,approvedand
confirmedhissignedconfessionthatwasreadtohiminhisnativetongue,andgaveassurances
thatheintendedtostandbyandmaintainboththisconfessionandtheconfessionhemadeona
differentoccasioninfrontoftheInquisitororinquisitorsregardingtheaforementionedheretic
transgressions,inasmuchasitwasinconcordancewiththeconfessionmadeinfrontofus,the
notariesandtheaforementionedwitnesses;andthatifthereissomethingextracontainedinthe
confessionmadeinfrontoftheInquisitorandinquisitors,asitwassaidearlier,heratifies,
approvesandconfirmsthat.

Onthesametwentiethdayofthemonth,inourpresence,andinthepresenceofnotariesandthe
samewitnesses,brotherpreceptorHugodePerraudinasimilarwayfreelyandwillinglyratified,
approvedandconfirmedhissignedconfessionthatwasreadtohiminhisnativetongue.

WeorderedRobertdeCondet,clericofthedioceseofSoissons,anotarybyapostolicpower,who
wasamongustogetherwithnotariesandwitnesseslistedbelow,torecordandmakepublicas
evidencetheseconfessions,aswellaseachandeverythingdescribedabovethatoccurredinfront
ofus,thenotariesandthewitnesses,andalsoeverythingdonebyus,exactlyasitisshownabove,
andtovalidateitbyattachingourseal.

Thiswasdoneontheyear,indiction,month,day,pontificateandtheplaceindicatedabove,inour
presenceandthepresenceofUmbertoVercellani,NicoloNicolaideBenvenutoandthe
aforementionedRobertdeCondet,andalsomasterAmisedOrleansleRatif,notariespublicby
theapostolicpower,aswellaspiousanddistinguishedbrotherRaymond,abbotofthe
BenedictinemonasteryofSt.Theofred,Annecydiocese,masterBerarddeBoiano,archdeaconof
Troia,RaouldeBoset,confessorandcanonfromParis,andPierredeSoire,overseerofSaint
GaugeryinCambresis,whoweregatheredspecificallyaswitnesses.

AndI,RobertdeCondet,clericofthedioceseofSoissons,notarybyapostolicpower,observed
withothernotariesandwitnesseseachandeverythingdescribedabovethatoccurredinthe
presenceoftheaforementionedreverendfatherslordscardinalpresbyters,myselfandother
notariesandwitnesses,aswellaswhatwasdonebytheirlordships.Ontheordersfromtheir
