Lessons
Day in Unit Learning Activities
Day 1
1. 1. Review the Guidelines for a Safe Learning Environment (10 mins)
2. Students, in their groups, are assigned one of the guidelines and will
represent their guideline on a piece of poster paper using only pictures.
They write their guideline on the back so that classmates are left to guess
what they posted on. (15 mins)
3. Students then come up with a skit to show how to follow their safety
guidelines while on the computer. (10 mins)
4. Groups present skits and share posters. Class has to guess which
guideline they were assigned. (25 mins)
Day 2
2. Chapter 7, Activity 2: Elements and their Properties
Cartoon Analysis, TAI, and Investigate #1-7
Do this as a teacher-led demo with a few student volunteers (ones
who have turned in safety contracts w/parent signatures)
3. Metals, Metalloids, and Non-Metals Notes and Lecture w/prezi
4. Diamante poem comparing Metals vs. Non-Metals
Day 3
1. Virtual Field Trip- loading the bus example
2. Practice on how to draw Bohr Models of atom- done in notebook.
For students who need the manipulatives to handle, have white
boards and small items like skittles, or fruit loops ready as a way to
model the electrons.

Day 4
1. Valence Electrons and Lewis Dot Structures Notes and Lecture
2. Lewis Dot Practice in notebook
3. How to draw Lewis Dot structures
Day 5
1. Chemical Bonds Notes and Lecture- Prezi
2. Chemical Bonds Showdown! game
1. Identifying Chemical Bonds Practice Worksheet
2. Lewis Dot Chemical Bonds Practice Worksheet
3. HOMEWORK: Log onto www.cacoo.com to view the shared file of the
Chemical Bonds Triple Venn Diagram. Complete and post onto Edmodo.

Day 6
Computer Lab Day
1. Read page 415 in textbook on Chemical Bonds.
Mark the text.
Answer text-based questions.
2. Read about chemical bonds on PBS. Complete graphic organizer in
notebook alongside the reading.
3. Students use www.cacoo.com to create a mind-map of properties of each
type of chemical bond. Give them an example to get started. View
example on Edmodo.
4. Chemical Bonds Quiz on Edmodo
Day 7
1. Bond with a Classmate Activity
a. Pass out elements to students. Have them fill out the chart to see
who they bond best with.
2. Introduce Chemistry.com profile and how to post on someones profile.
Give students time to create their profiles.
3. Use tinyscan app with ipad to capture each students chem.com profile,
save as pdf, then upload files onto padlet.
4. For homework, students log onto padlet and comment on one anothers
profiles.
5. Quick Write: Which chemical family of elements would your element be
most compatible with? Why? Create a list of top 3 elements your element
would be interested in bonding with. Find those elements tonight on
padlet and post a message on their profiles to show your interest in
bonding.
Day 8
1. Introduce persuasive writing assessment (pass out prompt and rubric)
2. Runaway Bride marriage proposal
3. Asking Mila Kunis to Military Ball
4. Have students meet in groups to do a placemat activity in which they
come up with criteria on what makes a good persuasive monologue.
5. Outline/Brainstorm persuasive monologue as a class
Day 9
Computer Lab Day
1. Review classmates chemistry.com profiles and post messages.
2. Introduction to Ionic vs. Covalent Bonds Virtual Lab
Only complete Intro and up to 1
st
chart today.
Day 10
Computer Lab Day
1. Introduction to Ionic vs. Covalent Bonds Virtual Lab
Complete rest of the virtual lab today.
2. Students create their own chemical bonds terms, riddle vocab-version, on
quizlet.com. After creating their flashcards, they switch computers with a
partner and play complete the cards, scatter, and race sections on
quizlet.com.
Day 11
1. Class review of 2 sample persuasive monologues- class grade and vote for
the element that makes the best argument to bond!
2. Complete and post Chemistry.com persuasive monologue on Google Docs.
Day 12
1. Students find 2 other classmates who wrote their persuasive monologues
from the perspective of elements in their chosen chemical family.
2. Peer edit persuasive monologues using comments on the documents
shared on Google Docs.
3. Next, students review peer edit comments and make final revisions to
their own persuasive monologue. Submit for grading.
