Our list of structural engineering design pro-
grams available continues to grow, confirming
the importance of software in todays design
office. This months guide features software
products that perform many of the aspects of
structural engineering analysis and design,
including finite element modeling, design load
determination of both gravity and lateral loads,
material-specific design, as well as specialty
analysis and design such as progressive collapse.
(Bridge engineering analysis and design is not
included in this list. It was featured in the May
2004 issue of Structural Engineer.)
While it is true that no program is a substi-
tute for sound engineering judgment, these pro-
grams certainly offer assistance with calcula-
tions. Since so many of the products on the
market today incorporate many features into a
single program, it is difficult to categorize the
programs by type. Therefore, we have listed
them alphabetically by manufacturer.
We contacted more than 90 software manu-
facturers for this guide to provide you with a
useful resource for your software needs. Since
each company can provide specific details
about their software, we have included a brief
list of products available, the price range of the
software, and a few highlights of their design
