Live Project Construction Sector
The Construction Industry in India is amongst the countrys most vibrant and booming
sectors. In recent years, this sector has grown at tremendous rates. A few key facts
about this key sector are as follows:
The size of the Construction Industry today is over I! ",#$,%%% crore.
It generates em&loyment for over '' million &eo&le in India.
(rom "%%% to "%%$, the sector has grown at a rate of over ))*.
+owever, large &arts of this industry remain unorganized. There is a lack of any defined
career &ath or structured training within this sector. There is very limited clarity about the
re,uired vocational skills and ,ualifications that an individual can develo& in order to
enter and subse, uently grow within this high growth sector.
-ith the new .overnment, there has been a strong focus on Infrastructure
/evelo&ment, as a means for driving growth. Additionally, this .overnment has &laced
a high value on skill develo&ment. Combining both these &illars for growth, the
.overnment of India and various 0tate .overnments have engaged the services of
Accenture to conduct a &ro1ect on the analysis of e2isting and re,uired skills within the
Construction Industry. This &ro1ect of national im&ortance will hel& address the twin
goals of infrastructure led growth and actualization of the demogra&hic dividend.
Overall Project Scope:
The overall indicative a&&roach to be followed for this engagement is as follows:
Phase 1 (As-Is Assessment of the Construction Industry): This would focus
on understanding size, &rofile and key sub3sectors of the Construction 0ector.
As&ects like &ro1ected growth rate, size of workforce for s&ecific 1ob roles,
e2isting career &ath and antici&ated changes in em&loyment &atterns will be
assessed. (urther, a database of e2isting training courses and institutes
4vocational and academic5 for the construction sector will be &re&ared to
understand key skills that are already being develo&ed. The aim of this e2ercise
will be to ,uantify a demand3su&&ly ga& of skilled man&ower for each key 1ob role
identified.
Phase 2 (Deep Dive for Occupations): This &hase will involve a com&rehensive
study of 1ob roles, career &aths, growth avenues, em&loyment o&&ortunities for
the youth, etc.
Phase 3 (unctiona! "e#uirement Ana!ysis): This detailed analysis will focus
on tasks to be &erformed by an individual in each key 1ob role6 occu&ation for the
sector. An understanding of 7what a &erson is e2&ected to do forms the basis for
the skills and knowledge re,uired by an individual to &erform at a high level in the
sector.
Phase $ (%&A Ana!ysis): This is the final link to com&lete a com&rehensive 0kill

.a& Analysis as envisaged in the &hase ) of the &ro1ect. This &hase would build
on all the &revious &hase to come u& with standardization across the identified
1ob roles in terms of what an individual is e2&ected to do as &art of the 1ob, and
would then build on the 8nowledge, 0kills and Abilities 480A5 re,uired to be able
to &erform the 1ob. This will be of great value for the .overnment while
formulating training courses in the future for this sector and make the &eo&le in
the sector world3class so that they are good enough to take care of the ra&id
industrialization that the country is e2&ected to see in the coming years to come.
In order to complete any of the above analysis, all participants within the Live
Project will have to engage with key stakeholders in the State from industry (large
scale firms and MSMs! and training providers of courses catering to the
"onstruction Sector#
$e would also be conducting a few workshops across some of the major cities
and the students working on the project may be asked to join these workshops#
