Uniformly Accelerated Motion

1.06 Accelerated Problems

Objective:
Use kinematics equation in solving problems with uniform acceleration.
Introduction:
The motion of an object that undergoes constant/uniform acceleration is very
predictable, thats kinematics. Kinematics equations will serve as guides in predicting them.
Have a good review on formula transformation, unit conversion and the four basic math
operation in order to do it properly.
The first approach to problem solving is to get familiarized with the number is the
given like initial velocity (vi), final velocity (vf), acceleration (a), time (t), distance (d), as well as
the one that is being looked for or the unknown. Secondly, of the kinematics equations, find
the one that contains all of the given and the unknown. Rearrange if you must. Change units
if you must and solve. Thats it! Accelerated solution to accelerated problems.
Instruction:
In each problem, identify the given and the unknown(s). Derive from the given kinematics
equation the formula to solve for the unknown. Further, illustrate the situation (in the
quickest possible way) to help you visualize it. YOU MAY NOT DO ACTUAL
CALCULATIONS.
1. A plane has a takeoff speed of 90 m/s and requires traveling 1400 m to reach that speed.
Determine the acceleration of the plane and the time required to reach this speed.

2. An engineer is designing the runway for an airport. Of the planes that will use the
airport, the lowest acceleration rate is likely to be 3 m/s
2
. The takeoff speed for this plane
will be 65 m/s. Assuming this minimum acceleration, what is the minimum allowed
length for the runway?

that the Jaguar skidded to a stop with a constant acceleration of -3.90 m/s

speed of the Jaguar before it began to skid.

4. A bike accelerates uniformly from rest to a speed of 8 m/s over a distance of 50 m.
Determine the acceleration of the bike.

5. A bullet is moving at a speed of 350 m/s when it embeds into a lump of moist clay. The
bullet penetrates for a distance of 0.1 m. Determine the acceleration of the bullet while
moving into the clay. (Assume a uniform acceleration)
