We build the solution for
climate change.

This was the message conveyed in the tree planting activity
done by the campers of Banna National High School in the Paraiso ti
Caribquib as part of their community
service during the backyard encampment, October 25.

The tree planting activity
was aimed to show love and care to
mother nature by lowering the effects
of global warming and the increasing
air pollutant-related problems. Furthermore, it aims to awaken the students to show concern in their community and environment.

Majority of the seedlings
planted were Palomaria and Narra.
According to Mr. Rolando Seman-

ero, municipal agriculture officer of

Banna, Palomaria (locally known as
Bittaog), said specie of tree is useful
since it is used for carvings.

The seedlings were taken
from the barangay nursery of Barangay Caribquib under the supervision

School conducts career

guidance seminar

Leonavella Dadis of DOLE

To prepare students for
their professions, Banna NHS conducted a Career Orientation Seminar, August 1.

To jumpstart the said seminar, students were made to dress up in
the attire of the profession they wish
to take.

A parade of the students
dressed as professionals was conducted before the start of the seminar.

The students were grouped
into agricultural and industrial occupation, transportation occupations, re

ligious occupations, business and

commerce occupations, engineering
and technological occupations, health
services occupations, teaching and social work occupations and science and
research occupations.

Meanwhile, Ms. Leonavella
Dadis and Mrs. Janet Martin, both
labor and employment officers of the
Department of Labor and Employment, Laoag City, talked on choosing
careers and the careers that have great
potentials.

Dadis and Martin underscored the importance of agricultural,
technical and vocational courses since
these would be the backbone of an
emerging Philippine economy.

Meanwhile, health service
professionals such as nurses are revealed to be a not so viable alternative
as they have less employment opportunities here in the Philippines aside
from the fact that there are too many
of them already. -(NFValenzuela)

This was proven by the
Rolando Aurelio Jr. a IV-Diamond as he swipes other contestants of the School Elimination

The Voice Of Asia is an
impromptu speech wherein the
speaker is given three minutes
to unite the thoughts and another three minutes to deliver ideas
about the given topic.

If you dont know how

to speak English, maybe other

people will call you illiterate or
uneducated.

These words made Rolando Aurelio, Senior, won over
the others and convince the judges the he really has the voice.

Aurelio represented Banna NHS in the Division Level
where he made BNHS ranked 6.

Meanwhile, a junior represented BNHS in a quiz bee
competition.

Joining a contest is an

Attitude when taken together is the word that makes our life
100% complete.

This was stressed by PInsp.
Lauro M. Milan, chief of Banna Police
Station, during the Anti-Drug Symposium at Banna National High School
quadrangle, July 5.

Milan also discussed with the
students the penalties for the pushers
and the users of drugs.

The police chief said that
drug use wrecks lives and that it carries
heavy punishments to pushers.

You should never, never be
involved in drugs because even just a
grain of it would make you liable to be
jailed, he said.

Mr. Menard Dave Magarro,
a nurse and lecturer, discussed to the
students about drugs, scientific name
of drugs, different kinds of drugs, effects of drugs independence/ addiction,
diagnostic criteria for drug dependence, signs of drugs in children, alcohol withdrawal syndrome, commonly
abused drugs/ substances, why people
start taking drugs and benzodiazepine
withdrawal symptoms.

The other Police officers of
Banna PNP also discussed the Act for
the Protection of Rights of Mother and
Children. (-RMRaada)

After spending more than
a decade in her first school, Banna
National High School, a mentor was
given a break to transfer to her home
city.

Mrs. Lovella M. Ramos,
Teacher III and Filipino coordinator of
Banna National High School, officially
ended her teaching stint at BNHS Sept.
9, and officially reported to Balatong
Integrated School, Sept. 10.

The Banna NHS students and
faculty members conducted a celebration for Ramos, the former adviser of
the Grade 8-Jasper, at the BNHS quadrangle, Sept. 19.

Ramos taught at Banna NHS
for almost 10 years. She was a a Filipino major.

Every student misses the way she says

maaari lamang na pumunta na sa inyong upuan at simulan na natin klase
as we enter her room. recalled Lovely
Jemaica Sinay, 7-Jasper.

According to Ramos, BNHS
is her second home and the students
behave better than those of Balatong
Intergrated School.

I thought that I would be
very happy since I would be close to my
home, but the students of Banna NHS
are easier to handle, Ramos said.

She added that it would take
her sometime to adjust especially so that
her new school is an integrated school
and she may be given a teaching load in
the elementary unit. (-EJTurate)

Editorial:

A great mans legacy

Great men always leave great footprints in the sand of
time.

Hon. Carlito N. Abadilla, Bannas truly great man left great
footprints too, unerasable, unwashable. That is mainly because the
man had altered the Bannas landscape, physically, mentally, politically, socially and the most vital of all, educationally.

The man, truly a Filipino with a Chinese mix in his blood
and an Ilokano mindset, throughout his lifetime believed in the supremacy of education and worked to execute his belief in his works
of leadership.

Abadilla was a product of the public elementary school
system in our hometown and a private secondary school, also of
the town of Banna. He recalled his years at the private high school
where he said he had to use cow dung to pave his classroom at that
time.

When he appeared in the towns political arena as a neophyte in 1972 after winning a race against the owner of private
school where he spent his secondary schooling, Abadilla started
and educational revolution in his hometown of Banna.

He formally established Catagtaguen Barangay High
School, now Catagtaguen National High School, the best secondary
school in Banna in terms of physical facilities. He then established
a barangay school in Bomitog, Bomitog Barangay High School,
but unluckily it died due to lack of students.

For many many years of his leadership, he established
many school buildings in the 17 schools, no single school was left

The Philippines experiences an average of 20 typhoons
every year. Typhoon, is a weather
disturbance that creates panic to
people. Typhoons are categorized
according to the wind speed it carries whether signal number 1, signal number 2, signal number 3 and
worst is if reaches signal number
4.

In the country, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical
Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) is tasked to
monitor occurrence of typhoon
that will enter the Philippine Area
of Responsibility (PAR). It is responsible in issuing advisories
to the the affected areas and how
strong the incoming typhoon is.
In turn, the National Government
through the National Disaster Risk
Reduction Management Council
(NDRRMC) will issue preventive

measures to reduce damage and

prevent casualties.

For the past 8 years, 15
strong typhoons hit the country
in which 3 were classified severe
tropical storm like typhoon Cosme
in 2008 , Ondoy in 2009 and Juaning in 2011. Typhoons Bebeng and
Sendong in 2011 were classified
tropical storms. Reming in 2006,
Juan in 2010 and lately Yolanda
are classified as super typhoons.

Not to set aside the areas
affected, these typhoons left damages in agriculture and infrastructure in billions of pesos. It even
cost the lives of people. As of this
time among the super typhoons,
Yolanda is the topnotcher in damaged it left with 5598 deaths and
1759 missing and still expected
to increase followed by Reming
with 734 deaths and 762 missing. Sendong left 1268 deaths and
181 missing. Ondoy claimed 464
deaths and 37 missing.

PAGASA decided that the

above-mentioned typhoon names

will retire in the list of names of
typhoons.

Added to typhoons, the
country as it lies in the Pacific
Ring of Fire, experiences earthquakes in varying magnitudes.
Magnitude 1 up to magnitude 10.
Baguio City and nearby provinces
was hit by strong earthquake in
July 16, 1991 leaving damages
in infrastructure and deaths in
the shaken provinces. Bohol and
Cebu was badly hit by 7.2 magnitude earthquake leaving casualties
and damages.

If only we listen to advisories, if only we started our
preparations as soon as the warning was given, if only we evacuated, not stayed and secured our
belongings, then a bucket of tears
should never been wasted for the
lives of thousands of people.

As they say, an ounce of
prevention will always be better
than a pound of cure.

Bullying: its effects

Andy is the smartest student
in their class despite of his disorders
being dwarfism and he has epilepsy.
Hes quiet and always alone because
his classmates are always teasing him
especially, Fred.

Fred always throws bad
words to Andy that causes him to
have low self esteem. Fred doesnt
beat him physically but as what
theyve said, word hurts more than
action does. Andy is always crying at
night. He wants to be friends with his
classmates but nobody wants to.

One time, Fred asked Andy
to give him his project in Math
subject but Andy refused so Fred
punched Andy on his face. This situation caused depression to Andy. He
doesnt want to go to school anymore
because hes scared. He doesnt eat
and cant sleep much because of depression.

Andy is a strong person but
it seems like he cant take it anymore.
His parents know very well what hap-

pened to him at school. They always

talk to Andy. Gave him advice and
words of wisdom. Trying to raise him
as a good person. But all people have
their limit no matter how good they
are, just what had happened to Andy.
And finally, Andy committed suicide
because of depression.

Before he commits suicide,
he didnt go outside, eat only once a
day, sleep for few hours and he frequently cries all day.

Nowadays, bullying has
been a serious problem in many
schools. Many of the students are being bullied by their fellow students.
Bullying is an act which involves verbal harassment, physical injury, oral
defamation and distraction of other
persons property. Bullying ranges
from simple one-on-one bullying to
more complex bullying in which the
bully may have one or more lieutenants who may seem to be willing to
assist the primary bully in his or her
bullying activities.

Some student bully to get
power, they think if you push people
around and make them do what you
want them to do, you will get noticed.
They want to get the attention of others. Some bullies do it just because
they like to hurt people, see the victim
cry and if the victim has the nerve to
respond, the bully has no pity. And
they want to get what they want.

Bullying causes fear, stress,
sleepless nights and sometimes suicide.

Victims of bullying are the
weak persons, silent ones, branded as
nerds, lack a circle of friends and people with physical or mental disorders.

School administrators must
decide how to disseminate their policy to students and how data will be
collected to monitor its effectiveness.
They should also develop plans for
training the adults in schools, including teachers, parents and aids to understand the policy and their role in
enforcing it.

Killer gusters and mindsets

PDAF shall serve its purpose

One of the present problems of the administration is the improper usage of the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) resulting
to corruption done by government leaders. PDAF is the term for the large
amount of money that was intended for the law makers to use for the different projects in serving people. There are Php. 1.77B PDAF released
yearly since 2006. Php. 1.5 B for the President; Php. 200M for each
Senator; and Php. 70M for the Congressmen including party lists.

With the exposure that the PDAF was misused, government
leaders had totally agreed to scrap the fund, otherwise known as the Pork
Barrel in the 2014 budget.

PDAF abolition has advantages and disadvantages. The number
1 advantage is to lessen corruption in the government especially in Congress. Because PDAF involves a great deal of money and government
leaders are the only benefactors. Reports prove that pork barrel became
the root of corruption in the government done by law makers. Government fund was normally declared by bogus Non-Government Organizations (NGO) and Local Government Units (LGU).

The PDAF abolition has led the Philippines a corruption-free
country but helpless Philippines. Now that were suffering disasters and
calamities, such as 7.2 Magnitude earthquakes that shocked Bohol Province and led into many casualties; the Armed Forces of the Philippines
(AFP) Muslim National Liberation Front (MNLF) Nur Misuari faction
conflict that made almost Zamboanga City a ghost city and made the
Zamboangeos homeless; and the super typhoon Yolanda which made
submerged Visayas cost many casualties, calamity-striken people are
helpless. For there is no government calamity fund, no PDAF anymore.

Philippines is in a big shame that national government and LGU
concerns are crippled to help their constituents. The international community is helping Filipinos to rise up from the rubble yet government is
not lending help for the calamity-striken people for government leaders
are irresponsible. Even China is now helping our country and temporarily forgotten the Scarborough Shoal intrigue.

One more disadvantage of the abolition of PDAF was no more
help that will be received especially by less fortunate people in terms of

who are the greatest global warming
contributor, to the worldwide fund on
climate change.

Yeb Sano, the Philippine
delegations lead negotiator has firmly connected the Typhoon Haiyan as
a manifestation of climate change
and urged his co-negotiators to look
at the effect of climate change, first
hand in order to appreciate a timely
action.

Typhoons such as Haiyan
and its impacts represent a sobering
reminder to the international community that we cannot afford to procrastinate on climate action, said Sano.
While it is true that developed nations are the major contributors to

global warming, it is the developing

nations like the Philippines which
are the recipients of the brunt of climate change. That is why, developing nations are demanding that developed nations pay up for the damage
wrought about by climate change.
Be that as it may, developing nations
do contribute substantially to climate
change. For instance, the Philippines
rely so much on fossil fuel burning.
The government in a rush to remedy
the power crisis which rears its ugly
head once every 10 years, would resort to a short term remedy, and that
is establishing fossil fuel burning
electrical generating plants. The vehicles we can afford are the ones that
had been outmoded in other countries

and junked in our backyard because

they are the ones we can afford.

And in retrospect, we should
not forget that the Philippines is the
largest single consumer in Asia of
motorcycles and although these may
be efficient, the sheer number of motorcycles running on our streets and
roads contribute substantially to climate change.

Also, our modern transportation system are based on buses not
trains, and by far the fuel consumed
to bulk of cargo and passenger ratio of

Hubris of a president

A police general who had mouthed that around
10,000 people probably died as an aftermath of the Yolanda disaster that swept the Visayas was relieved of his
duties.

The president said the police general may have
overestimated the casualties and insisted that it should be
not more than 2,500.

After some weeks when statistics had poured in
and international recovery efforts were launched, it was
found out that the police general was not too far out of
range, specially so that the death toll has climbed to nearly 6000.

This action by the president of the land, downplaying the casualties instead of staying mum and waiting
for development is none other than hubris, pride.

The president by relieving his police general on
the field had demonstrated a high- handed action by a supreme commander, and that action was spurred only by
supposed to be embarrasing situation.

By downplaying the possible and removing from

in the early days after the disaster.

Political leaders have hubris of varying natures
at some point in their political life. In the face of an affront, or in the face of their incapacity to act, they vent
anger on things or persons which they can easily victimize.

Agreat
leader gone
beyond

A gracious sponsor...

A friendly man...

A doting father....

A good provider...

A gifted visionary....

A visible public servant...

A tireless leader...

For twenty seven years he had held the reign of leadership in a town of 18,000, bringing the sleepy backwoods municipality from a small unheard provincial town to a vibrant, clean
and leading municipality in education, business, agriculture and
infrastructure.

If one had to look at the amazing transformation of this
town from what it was in 1972 when he took over as the local
chief executive, to what it is now, one is filled with awe and admiration.

That the man, Hon. Carlito Nolasco Abadilla, son of former municipal councilor and businessman Vicente Abadilla and
the former Maria Nolasco, had pulled a mighty sleigh of handlike magic in bringing Banna to the modern age, perflexes balikbayans and visitors alike.

Banna has these things to boast:

A capacious and well-maintained public market which
was adjudged the best market in Ilocos Norte;

The first remodeled municipal hall building made of red
marble;

A sports complex second only to the Marcos Stadium in
terms of size, and being continually improved;

A Belgian type open air church, the first of its kind in
Ilocos Norte;

A government center area which is a one stop-hub with
all government services building and public parks located in only
one spot at Barangay Marcos, Banna, a rarity in any town in the
entire Philippines;

Adjudged as the cleanest and greenest town in Ilocos
Norte and Region I for a number of time;

A 3-storey police headquarters;

Two municipal buses, one of the first town in Ilocos Norte
to acquire such;

A Greek type municipal amphiteater which could accomodate all people of the municipality;

And the list could go on and on, without exhausting the
wonders Banna could offer because of the vision, industry and
diligence of the Hon. Carlito Nolasco Abadilla.

The last three years of the mayor had been the most productive years of his 27 year tenure. This could be so because of
the following accomplishments:

1. Concreting of Farm to Market Roads, Barangay Nagpatayan and Bangsar, Banna, Ilocos Norte - Php 10,998,599.98

2. Rehabilitation and Expansion of Banna Level III water
system additional pipelines - Php 3,015,620.72

3. Rehabilitation and Expansion of Banna Level III water
system original installations- 7,247,884.08

4. Construction of Banna Municipal Hall West Wing

5. Continuation of the Banna Police Station Type B/CPhp 1,504,986.10

6. Construction of Flood Control Structures Along Bongo
River (Phase III) - Php 9,986,905.39.

7. Concreting of farm to market roads in Barangays
Crispina, Bugasi and Balioeg, Banna, Ilocos Norte. - Php
14,988,950.42.

The mayor had sponsored free clinics and medical
missions to his constituents in
special occasions.

He also improved and
enhanced the services of the
Banna mothering center to
complement the Rural Health
Unit.

Banna schools are in
the forefront when it comes
to infrastructure development
because the mayor believed in
sound education for a sound future of the coming generation.

Every school, elementary and secondary had felt the
impact of the leadership Abadilla had in instituting transformations in infrastructure,
health and sanitation and and
learning materials improvment.

For another thing, the
mayor was very much concerned on the holistic development of the child by developing
his emotional, social, physical
and psychological attributes.

Banna for instance has
proven its supremacy in sports
and in academics in the provincial scene largely due to the
inputs of the mayor in financial
and moral assistance.

Mayor Carlito Nolasco
Abadilla will be unerasable
in the memory of all people
of Banna, not only because
he had, like magic, waved his
wand of change, (not magic really but by diligence and industry and charisma), but for his
being a man imbibed with the
greatness of humanity.

The mayor likes to
play jokes and often jabs at the
stomach of people, but that was
taken not as an affront but a
way of expressing his fondness
for people. And for sure, even
though he says words which
may be rough to the ear, he

I woke up in a lovely
morning, hearing the birds chirping, the suns smiling. I get up
from bed and went downstairs
even though my hair is so haggard. At the kitchen, I saw my

IRONMAN 3: Another joyride

FILM REVIEW:
Synopsis: Iron Man 3 pits brashbut-brilliant industrialist Tony
Stark/Iron Man against an enemy
whose reach knows no bounds.
When Stark finds his personal
world destroyed at his enemys
hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible.
This journey, at every turn, will test
his mettle. With his back against
the wall, Stark is left to survive
by his own devices, relying on his
ingenuity and instincts to protect
those closest to him. As he fights
his way back, Stark discovers the
answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man
make the suit or does the suit make
the man?

Modern Humanism Theory

Iron Man 3 mainly deals
with science and technology. In
the first place, the main character,
Tony Stark has this nuclear reactor
heart still has this human compassion. He's spending as much time
as possible in his lab, concocting a
whole army of different Iron Man
suits. His latest invention allows
him to control a suit prototype with
his body, compelling pieces of his
amour to his person with a wave
of his arms. Until the finale, it is
all- robot action. He is not afraid to
challenges and explores new stuffs
that would help him somehow
combat his destructive adversaries.
Admittedly, a billionaire in a suit,
but still a normal mortal human being. Thats one of the things thats

so amazing about Iron Man as a

character, and why hes more impressive than The Hulk or Thor
hes just a man. He has to rely on
his wits for large portions to survive.
One of the big lessons of Iron Man
3 is Tony Stark learning that its
the person inside the suit, rather
than the suit itself, that makes him
a hero.
Realism

The film made me realized
that superheroes have this human
hearts though literally Tony Stark
(Iron Man) has this bizarre heart.
Though he possessed that nuclear

reactor heart he still has this heart to

help the people keep from harm in
the hands of the destructive group
of terrorists headed by the Killian
(Mandarin). Moreover, though
Iron Man has this kind of heart, he
had given special attention and affection to Pepper still has the possibility to live-in love with Pepper
(Gwyneth Paltrow).
Realism was also depicted by the
antagonist, Killian/ Mandarin for

he was really focused to destroy

Stark for the reason that he wanted
to prove perhaps that he is better
than Stark. That Killian once
disabled, now vigorous is using
a genetically altered virus called
Extremis to weaponize former soldiers. He caused all kinds of problems and challenged Stark. In reality, there are people who are likened
to
Killian,
hiding their
own identity,
pretentious
and
backfighter.
It is true
that
when
someone
has
turned
us down we
sometimes
promised
ourselves that for your nest encounter, you will be someone else
better than you are now or perhaps even better than the one who
turned you down. This happened to
Killian when he thought that Stark
snubbed him during their first encounter (beginning of the story
with a flashback to New Year's Eve
1999 at a swank affair in Switzerland) when he tried to talk about
business with Stark.

Same is true with the
woman he bedded that New Years
Eve, Maya, a biotech researcher
(Rebecca Hall) who has discovered a way to regenerate lost living
tissue. At the end of the story, she
worked with Killian. Her partnership with Killian I think has something to do with vengeance of what
Stark has done to her despite the
fact that when she went to Starks
house is to warn him about the plan
of rescinding his home.

The conflict of the movie
also holds true with the present
problem in our society nowadays
that we are attacked by terrorisst
and surrounded by people who are
egocentric. Thus, Iron Man 3 is a
criticism of social conditons.
Feminism
It's also nice to see, Pepper Potts
(Gwyneth Paltrow) have a bit more
to do this time. Iron Man 2 made
me proud to be a woman that she
was basically promoted by Stark
as the CEO of the Stark Company.
Pepper is a feminist icon for in reality seldom that we have females
as CEOs.
Much more that she empowered
the image of women in Iron Man
3 for she is stronger and more impressive when she saved her loveinterest, Stark in his raging fight
with Killian/ Mandarin. Pepper
whose Extremis powers allowed
her to survive her fall, intervenes
and kills Killian.

Psychology/ Psychoanalysis
This theory is really suited to un-

derstand the characteristics of both

the protagonist (Iron Man) and the
antagonist (Mandarin). Their personality, behavior, and cognition
are largely determined by irrational
drives.
Tony Stark developed or had become an Iron man himself because
of the events he had experienced
and dealt with during his childhood. His Father was a scientist so
this perhaps drives him to become
such an invent things. He is also a
man of arrogance and with boundless sense of humor. Stark was able
to control his ego having his defense mechanism to protect against
his anxiety that the world and New
York in particular will be destroyed
by Mandarin. In this movie, Tony
Stark is more mature when it
comes to thinking especially realizing in the end that he has put his
love- interest into harm and so as a
sign of his intention to devote more
time to Pepper, he instructed Jarvis
to destroy each Iron Man suit and
decided to live a normal life
Mandarin on the other hand is a
ruthless psychotic terrorist. It could
be inferred that with his disability,
this drives him to make things better for himself to be known by any
means for Stark once disregarded
him. Without thinking of the effects, it might cause if he continuously provoke all sorts of terrorism. He was not able to mediate the
reality (id) and the moral principle
(superego) for he lets his unconscious psychic energy to satisfy his
desire to destroy Tony Stark.

Short Story:

Who knows best?

There was a couple who has no child. But they longed to have, even only one. To their
eager desire, one day, they went to the church and pray that even tear drops fell and runs in their
face. When they are done and as they go out from the church, they saw an old woman looking
bits of food from trashes outside.

Upon reaching her, they prohibit her from eating the pieces of trash she had gathered, instead, they gave her money for her to buy food. To their amazement, their old woman gave them
strange thing and said.

Theres one thing youve been longing for and thats why you keep on praying.

We have been wanting that more than half a decade now the man replied.

Take this tablet. This could probably help you solve your problem.

The old woman spoke, take this during midnight. I know you are in doubt. But your faith
will surely push you to take.

And she continued to her interrupted work dropping the thing shed offering in their front.

The couple gaze each other and picked the tablet and left the woman.

That night, the couple is uncertain if they will take the tablet the woman gave or not.

Theres one thing youve been longing for thats the phrase that keeps on reverberating
on their mind. Your faith will surely push you to take.

Nothing would probably be lost if we will try, the wife said.

Days and weeks passed and they keep on praying.

One morning, the wife felt dizzy and seems to vomit. And that strange thing led her to
vomiting every morning. Feeling uneasy and crave for something.
She told her husband about what she felt during the pass few days. And they decided to see their
doctor.

Take care of your wife, the doctor said.
Puzzled to what the doctor had said he asked: Why doc, is there something wrong?
The doctor reclines her chair and gazed to the wife and finally to the husband.

Take care of your wife, I said. For several months to pass you will become a full-pledge
father, the doctor said smiling.

The husband followed what their doctor had advised, he treated his wife as if he is still
courting her.

And months passed. What they have awaited had come. A handsome baby was born.

As their son grows old, they made their best to make him grow as a God-fearing and have
respect for others. When he got baptized, they named the baby, Vincent.

Vincent grew in the expectations of his parents. The good manners and right conduct his
parents had taught was seen to him. He is a consistent honor pupil in his elementary grades making his parents proud of him.

A twist on the life of Vincent upon reaching second year high school. He does everything
he wants. He violates the rules of his parents and even the rules of the land. He joins his barkadas
who are drug addicts, smokers and alcoholics.

One day, his parents waits for him. But even as the night goes older, no Vincent appeared.
When he got home, its just a form of visit. And everytime he will left their house, a couple of
tear glides at the face of her mother. He brought home different girls. No time of confrontation
between Vincent and his father that it will not end to fistfight.

Vincent left their home and joined his barkadas. And they become notorious in their activities.

A year later, as the couple awaits with the hope that Vincent will come home, they sat
infront of their TV. The couple were surprised in a flash report. Vincent Cabanatuan, a notorious
drug pusher arrested.

The couple spent the night crying.

Rushing to the police station where Vincent was detained, their son was not there. Was he
able to escape the law enforcer?

Sir, where is he? her mother asked.

He was brought to the hospital.

Did he resist?

As expected in cases like this, we found this letter in his pocket.

A piece of paper? it appears to have been folded long ago.

Mom and Dad,

Sorry for all the wrongdoing that I have done. I know that I brought to you the burden
which nobody wants to carry. Thank you for all the care and upbringing.

I know already my fate.

Thank you for everything.

Vincent

The police officer on duty ushered them to the hospital, but Vincent is no longer in a
regular ward. He is now on the hospital morgue.

Colorectal cancer:
the mayors killer unraveled

The death of Banna municipal mayor was due to colon cancer, it is worth noting of this killer which has
become the third most potent killer of men in the developed countries.Colorectal cancer, rectal cancer or
bowel cancer is a type of cancer caused by uncontrollable growth in the colon or rectum which are parts of
the large intestine or in the appendix. These cancers are caused the same type and they reside in those area.
The cancer manifests its presence by rectal bleeding and anemia which may be aggravated by weight loss
and changes in the bowel habits.
Genetic disorders are related to minority of cases of the cancer but most colorectal cancer occur due to
lifestyle and increasing age. The disease typically starts at
the lining of the bowel and if left untreated can grow into
the muscle layers underneath and then through the bowel
wall.
Colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy are the tests for colon
cancer. Sigmoidoscopy is a minimally invasive medical
examination of the large intestine from the rectum through
the last part of the colon. Sigmoidoscopy only examines
up to the sigmoid, the most distal part of the colon while
colonoscopy examines the whole large bowel.
Colonoscopy is the endoscopic examination of the large
bowel and the distal part of the small bowel with a CCD
camera or a fiber optic camera on a flexible tube passed
through the anus.

The most common sign includes worsening constipation or
obstruction of the feces. Often there is blood in the stool.
There may be a decrease in the caliber or size of the stool, loss of appetite, loss of weight and nausea and
vomiting in men over 50 years old.

The risk factors of the disease could be older age, male gender, high intake of fat, alcohol or red
meat, obesity, smoking and lack of physical exercise. Approximately 10% of all cases are linked to insufficient activity.

Greenlands glaciers
causes 20% water rise

Mar. 18, 2013 Glaciers at the edge of Greenland which are
not connected to its huge ice sheet, or can be clearly separated from it,
are contributing to sea-level rise much more than previously thought.
Scientists from the University of Zurich together with colleagues from
Denmark have found that, though these peripheral glaciers make up
just 5-7 % of total ice coverage on the land mass, they account for up
to 20% of the rise in sea level created by the regions melting.
The scientists looked at glaciers which behave independently from
the ice sheet, despite having some physical connection to it, and those
which are not connected at all.

The discovery, just published in Geophysical Research Letters,
is important as it will help scientists improve the predictions of the future contribution of Greenlands ice to sea-level rise.
Using lasers which measure the height of the ice
from space, and a recently
completed inventory of
Greenlands glaciers and
ice caps, scientists from the
European-funded
ice2sea
programme, were able to determine changes in the mass
of those ice bodies, separate
from the main ice sheet.
It also showed that the contribution to sea-level rise from the glaciers
of Greenland separated from the ice sheet makes up around 10% of the
estimated contribution of the entire worlds glaciers and ice caps, and
that contribution is higher than expected.
Lead author Dr. Tobias Bolch, from the University of Zurich, says,
The melting of ice on Greenland is known to be one of the major
sources for global sea-level rise. Beside the large ice sheet, there are
thousands of peripheral glaciers which are not connected to the ice
sheet or can be separated from it due to the existence of ice divides. The
area of those glaciers is about 50 times higher than the ice cover of the
European Alps. Consequently, it is important to investigate not only the

New discovery:

Cryptic new species

Nov. 27, 2013 Researchers reporting in the Cell Press journal Current Biology on November 27
have identified a cryptic new species of wild cat living in Brazil. The discovery is a reminder of just how
little scientists still know about the natural world, even when it comes to such charismatic creatures. The
findings also have important conservation implications for the cats, the researchers say.
Scientists had thought that there was a single species of housecat-sized Brazilian tigrina. However, the molecular data now show that tigrina populations in northeastern versus southern Brazil are completely separate, with no evidence of
interbreeding between them. As such, they
are best described as
two distinct species.

"Our
study
highlights the need for urgent attention
focused on the Brazilian
northeastern tigrinas, which are virtually
unknown with respect to
most aspects of their biology," says Eduardo Eizirik of Pontifcia
Universidade Catlica do Rio Grande do
Sul in Brazil, noting that
much more is known about the cats living
in the southern part of
the country.

The new study
by Eizirik, Tatiane Trigo of Universidade
Federal do Rio Grande
do Sul, and their colleagues further revealed a complicated set
of relationships between the tigrinas and
two other species of Neotropical cats. That evolutionary history includes ancient hybridization and movement of genes between the pampas cat and the northeastern tigrinas (Leopardus tigrinus). In contrast, southern tigrinas (newly recognized as Leopardus guttulus) continue to hybridize with Geoffroy's cats, leading to
extreme levels of interbreeding between the species along their contact zone. Those patterns add to evidence
that hybridization can and does occur between distinct animal species.
As for the two tigrina species, the researchers suggest that they may be suited to different habitats, with the
northeastern cats living primarily in savannahs, as well as dry shrub lands and forests, and the southern species living in denser and wetter Atlantic forests.

"Such distinct habitat associations provide a hint to potentially adaptive differences between these
newly recognized species and may have been involved in their initial evolutionary divergence," Trigo says.
Moreover, Eizirik adds, "all four species are threatened, and we need to understand as much as possible regarding their genetics, ecology, and evolution to be able to design adequate conservation strategies on their
behalf."

New species of skeleton Big brains linked

shrimps discovered

Its a truism that the
ocean depths will remain Earths
last great wilderness, and judging
by the recent find of a new species
of 'skeleton shrimp' theres still a
lot of eye-popping discoveries yet
to be made.

Named Liropus minusculus due to their small size, these
tiny crustaceans (above) were
identified by a research team from
the University of Seville and were
found living in a reef cave offshore from Californias Catalina
Island. The female of the species
is on the left and the male on the
right, with their descriptions first
published 8 October in the journal
Zootaxa.
They belong to a family of animals known as Caprellidae, and
although the creatures are most
commonly identified as ghost
shrimps or skeleton shrimps (a
moniker given in recognition of
the tiny crustaceans slender, translucent bodies) they are not in fact
shrimps, but a type of crustacean
known as amphipods.

Jos Manuel Guerra-Garca, the

lead author of the paper describing Liropus minusculus, first realised that the 'shrimp' constituted
an undiscovered species after
seeing specimens in a museum in
2010. The find is remarkable as it
constitutes the first example of the
Liropus genus found in the northeast Pacific Ocean.

Although their claws look fearsome (technically these are gnathopods, described by the Encyclopedia Brittanica as claws used
to grasp females during copula-

tion) these are tiny creatures just

a couple of millimetres in length.
Guerra-Garca has suggested that
L. minusculus might in fact be the
smallest example of its genus.
Like the similarly proportioned
praying mantis, many species of
Caprellidae are patient predators,
lying in wait for long periods of
time before snatching and eating
creatures even smaller than themselves.
Their angular bodies and pale colouring also help, allowing them to blend in

a surgeon discovers:

Adding water will reveal

the map of the brain

To map a person's brain, just add water. This image showing a rainbow of intricate neural connections cradling a walnut-like tumour was made using diffusion tensor imaging, which tracks the movement
of water molecules through
brain cells.
Surgeon Clark Chen of the
University
of California, San Diego,
used
an
image like this to plan his
assault on
a tumour in school teacher
Anthony
Chetti's occipital lobe the
portion of
the brain responsible for
processing
visual information. The detailed image was pivotal in removing
the tumour
without destroying Chetti's
sight.
"There are no margins for
error
in
the brain. Every centimetre
of
brain
tissue contains millions
of neural
connections, so every millimetre
counts," says Chen.
Chetti came round after the
operation
to find that his eyesight was unaffected.
"When I woke up from surgery, I asked for my glasses straight away and began running systems checks. I
could see the clock. I could read the words on a sign. It was immediately evident that there were no problems," says Chetti.

This method of imaging has helped to reveal much of the detail in our brains. A recent study used
a form of diffusion tensor imaging to identify a three-dimensional grid pattern of fibres that may be the underlying structure of the human brain.

During evolution, different mammal species have experienced
variable degrees of expansion in brain size. An important goal of neurobiology is to understand the genetic changes underlying these extraordinary adaptations.

The process by which some species evolved larger brains
-- called encephalization -- is not well understood by scientists. The
puzzle is made more complex because evolving large brains comes at
a very high cost.

Dr Humberto Gutierrez, from the School of Life Sciences,
University of Lincoln, UK, led research which examined the genomes
of 39 species of mammals with the aim of better understanding how
brains became larger and more complex in mammals.

To do this, the scientists focussed on the size of gene families
across these species. Gene families are groups of related genes which
share similar characteristics, often linked with common or related biological functions. It is believed that large changes in the size of gene
families can help to explain why related species evolved along different paths.

The researchers found a clear link between increased brain size
and the expansion of gene families related to certain biological functions.

Dr Gutierrez said: "We found that brain size variations are associated with changes in gene number in a large proportion of families
of closely related genes. These gene families are preferentially involved
in cell communication and cell movement as well as immune functions
and are prominently expressed in the human brain. Our results suggest
that changes in gene family size may have contributed to the evolution
of larger brains in mammals."

An ordinance for a
plastic free Banna

Banna has been adjudged last year as the Cleanest and
Greenest municipality in the Province of Ilocos Norte. This came
as a surprise since no one expected there had been a contest like
this launched by the DILG, provincial level.

No doubt, the continuing vigililance of the town populace
brought about by the institutionalization of the OPLAN Salukag
program definitely contributed to this award for the municipality.

However, as a developing town eager to be financially and
physically sound, Banna needs to do more in terms of solid waste
management.

Bannas municipal market for instance produces tons of
rubbish a year, most by weight are biodegreadable, and certainly,
a substantial part of it are plastics.

To reduce the overall use of plastics, the municipality needs
to cut the garbage at its source, by bringing in a mindset totally different from that of today.

The catchword the municipality needs to eliminate is this:
convenience. Convenience is the word when you walk to a store
without a container of your own and let the store provide you with
one made of plastic which you could throw away once you arrive
home.

If the container is a biodegradable material, there would
be no problem but chances are, the throwaway material would be
plastic.

So, to arrest the trend, the Municipality needs to institute
a measure to provide penalty for the use of plastics, or incentives
to consumers for the non-use of the same. For instance, paper
wrappers needs to be introduced in groceries and durable reusable
containers for wet goods. Even just reintroducing rattan market
baskets would contribute to this effort. The Municipality could try
and see the result.

Banna baseball team scored no less than a convincing
victory at the East Unit Secondary Schools Athletic Association
meet at Solsona, Ilocos Norte recently.

Solsona, once a proud contender sunk to the mercy of the
combined tandem of pitcher Benjie Pascua and Jade Munio, able
to make a lone score while Bannas battery scored 16.

It was a convincing victory and Banna and Banna National High School where the core of the batters came reigns supreme
in that event.

It is a homecoming of the crown.

For two straight years, Banna NHS had lost the crown to
Catagtaguen NHS, but this year it is back in its hands.

Why is this so?

Aside from being of greater potential, the Banna NHS
athletes had learned a lesson-not to take training and disciplinefor granted.

One thing more, they had mellowed a bit in terms of discipline and they now had learned to listen to authorities.

The school principal had repeatedly admonished athletes
to practice and show discipline because that is a hallmark of a
successful athlete.

The core of athletes in baseball comes ready and seasoned
from their training in the elementary where Banna District is the
undisputed king in the childrens baseball.

This undisputed supremacy in baseball had been giving
these athletes an aura of invincibility, an aura of greatness which
they bring in high school. This in turn leads themn to wayward
attitudes which when left uncorrected will give disciplinary headaches to school authorities, aside from losing matches.

With the victory of Banna NHS in baseball this year, they
must re-remember to be humble in victory.

Antonio proves her mettle in badminton

ANTONIO

`
This was proven by Ethel
Kris Antonio, as she smashed her opponent from Piddig in the field of badminton with a score of 21-12 on the
first set and 21-17 on the second set.

Not only Antonio who
fought till the end but also her coplayers, Jayson Galvan, Lyn Jun Gudal, Albert Guieb, and Rick Clarence
Sadiri for the men division and for the
women division Alaniece Djamereine
Gabriel, Lovely Jemica Sinay and

Gretchen Baniaga but unfortunately,

they didnt get the crown. The coach
of Antonio, Ms. Leny B. Agustin was
so happy for the victory of Antonio.
But before Antonio got the crown, she
walked first in the hole of the needle,
because her opponent never gives up
she also gave her very best but Antonio gave the best of her ability to win.
This happened last Nov. 22-23 at Solsona, Ilocos Norte for the East Unit
Athletic Association Meet.

Town reflects on Abadillas...p1

The remains of Abadilla was flown in from Manila and a mass of people met the cadaver at the Laoag International Airport where a motorcade escorted the body to Banna along roads thronged by supporters and admirers accross Ilocos Norte which

roads thronged by supporters and admirers accross Ilocos Norte which he served also as a Sangguniang Panlalawigan member
for three terms.

The wake was resumed at the mayors residence in Barangay Hilario and the remains was transferred to the still soon
to be finished Banna Municipal Hall West Wing, a last infrastructure brainchild of the mayor.

His funeral Nov. 14 was the most attended funeral in Banna gathering a mass of 8,000 people and bringing in Hon. Imee
R. Marcos, Ilocos Norte Governor, who delivered a eulogy at the general necrological service at the Banna Cultural Center before
the body was brought to the Roman Catholic Church, a Belgian open air church which was a landmark the mayor also erected.

Townfolks were tearful of remembering how the man had made Banna from a sleepy town in 1972 to a gleaming community today.

Dandani amin a makitam ditoy Banna, partuat ni Apo Mayor, Sonny Manuel, a resident of Balioeg said.

We are mourning the demise of a leader whom we had supported for the last quarter of a century, Mrs. Evelyn Dancel,
private secretary to the mayor also said.

Abadilla was a mayor of Banna from 1972 to 1986. His leadership was broken by the time of the EDSA Revolution.
Then again, when normalcy was restored, he regained the mayorship from 1988 to 1988. In 1998, he ran for sangguniang panlalawigan member and he was voted in for that position for three terms, also being elected as senior sangguniang panlalawigan
member for the 2nd district. His third and final term ended 2007 when he again ran for vice mayor of the municipality of Banna.
In 2010, he was voted in again as mayor and in 2013 was reelected. His last major projects were the concreting of barangay roads
and the construction of the 3-M Banna PNP building and the 40 M Banna Municipal Hall West Wing.

Banna shames Solsona at home, 13-1

Like avenging demons, Banna sluggers left no hole unplugged as
they shamed Solsona in a five-inning
championship match of the EUSSAA
Meet 2013, 13-1, at the Solsona Public Plaza, Nov. 22.

Solsona opened the game as
batter but the trio Figette Valenciano,
Rey Bacudio and Reggienald Matias

Darnell Butoy were put out standing.

The third inning brought
grief to Solsona as the batters suffered another set of successive standing outs while Mrs. Vicky Corla,
Solsona NHS school principal tried
to harangue the scoreless team with
inspiring words.

Meanwhile, Banna was unstoppable as it piled six more scores
by Rheynal Erice, Jade Munio, Dan
Benjie Pascua, Julius Nieto, Gregory

Gaygay and Jude Kevin Maulit before Darnell Butoy and Nathaniel
Bullalayao suffered an standing outs.

Solsonas eastern light

Runners rule track in EUSSAA relays

Ethel Jay Carlos, CAT batallion commander of BNHS sees action in

the track at the BANSSAA 2013.

Run, Sinco! Run!.

Thus shouted Mr. Michael
Adisas, athletic coach, women division

joied the crowd cheering the runners of
Banna in relay women during the East

Ground., Nov. 21-22.

Banna Blue Shark Team in
athletics exchanged shouts with the runners and pumped overtake strides against

the other team as they rushed on, creating

a whoop beat in the track.

Striding like a Cheetah, Joybelle Sinco, an IRAA player from Caestebanan NHS, closed the leg for the relay
team in 4x100m (women division) along
with Janilla Ivy Ragus of Caestebanan
NHS, Jastine Tepase of Banna NHS, and
Wenn Ramirez of Caestebanan NHS making the team champion. Criselda Lao-ang

for the final round of the 4x400m, women

division capturing the champion slot

with Joybellle Sinco and Wenn Ramirez
of Caestebanan NHS, and Jastine Tepase
of Banna NHS.

In related news, the Blue
Shark ruled the track for the 4x100 men
division. Whooping like a horse, Mark
Anthony Pascual of Banna Academy
opened the leg and passed the baton to
Ethel Jay Carlos who ran like a deer and
passed it to Mark Alfred Yala of Banna
Academy who strode like a whirling
wind to finally bring the baton to Jehad
Saleh of Catagtaguen NHS galloped like
one struck with lightning. In the 4x400m
men division, Blue Shark landed second.

Officiating officials in athletics from other unit were amazed of the
performance shown by the Banna Blue
Shark Team during the athletic competition.

The upgrade in the performance of the athletic team is a product
of the intense 2-day in-house training,
coach Adisas said.

Lets enjoy the game!

This was all the the Banna Basketball women players said
during the championship game
between Banna and Solsona in
the East Unit Secondary School
Athletic Association (EUSSAA)
Meet 2013 held on Solsona, Ilocos Norte, November 21-22.

Solsona pulled up early
in the game, piling leads while
Banna was stucked for a time
with a score of 2 to the dismay of
Coach Lerma Gorra.

The trio of Rina Diaz,
Diana Mae Padron and Aisha
Saranilla tried to pull up but every time they were met up with
stiff resistance from the Solsona
battery who managed to steal rebounds on the very eyes of the
smaller Banna athletes.

By the end of the first
half, Banna was stuck at 31-4,
barely garnering a shot by Aisha
Saranilla.

The 3rd quarter gave

Banna some hope of avoiding a

catastrophic disaster as it was able
to rais its score to 12, as Solsonas
harvest climbed to 52.

Also, to the misfortune
of Banna, Diana Mae Padron suffered an injury of the ankle while
Saranilla suffered cramps.

The championship was
held at Basketball Court in front
of Federico F. De Lara Civic Center. Some Banna players were
dumbfounded that time. as they
were stunned by the murderous
show of skills by Solsona players
in their home court.

Banna players lost hope
because they believe that they
werent able to beat Solsona. But
they tried their best and they didnt
give up or surrender. They just enjoyed the game even though Solsona was ahead of many points
Assistant Coach Rico Rizardo
said.
